Valencia de Alcántara has a spectacular

megalithic complex made up of 41

dolmens, dating from the 4th and 3rd millennium BC. Some are in perfect condition and can be visited along five well-marked routes: Tapias, Zafra, Las Lanchas, Huertas de las Monjas and Los Mellizos.

Dolmens are burial chambers formed by stone slabs, with a larger slabs used as a roof. Some have a small corridor and used to be accompanied by burial goods.

Tartessian Monumental Sanctuary

This adobe palacesanctuary dates back to the 5th century BC.

The main building has eleven rooms, a large courtyard, and a well that is still fed by the water from the Cagancha River, near the site. Various cult objects and typical beads of the time have been found.

Opposite the monument is the Cancho Roano interpretation centre, which reveals the secrets hidden in this unique archaeological site.
