PLAZA MAYOR Garrovillas de Alconétar

The arcaded square

Garrovillas de Alconétar’s Plaza Mayor is an architectural complex considered the best example of late medieval rural architecture in Extremadura. Listed as one of the most beautiful in Spain and among the 12 largest in the country, with its 4000 m2, it is made up of a set of houses with porches and windows in semicircular arches.

Located in the same square, is the Palace of the Dukes of Alba de Liste, now converted to a hotel belonging to the hotel chain Red de Hospederias de Extremadura, hotels run by Extremadura’s Government.

LA TORRE DEL ALFILER Trujillo Guardian of history

Torre del Alfiler is one of the most characteristic buildings of the monumental picture of Trujillo. Built with Roman ashlars, it was a defensive part of the Muslim town and converted, in the 16th century, into the homage tower of the Chaves-Cárdenas palace, which still shows the chain above its door, a symbol of having had the honour of hosting the king Felipe II.

Its name is due to the fact that it has a metal rod nailed to the dome that covers the plane where the battlement was, which was removed by order of Queen Isabel La Católica. Inside is Trujillo’s History Interpretation Centre.
