IN WEST FLANDERS / TOE TOEZNT In West Flanders, we speak a dialect that is very different from standard Dutch. Furthermore it is extremely difficult to understand for people from neighbouring areas. To this end, we’d like to prepare everyone for meeting an inhabitant of West Flanders. Make sure you read our previous language labs as well at www.extremis.be

Poperinge is known as the ‘Hop Capital’ of Belgium. 180 hectares of the surrounding countryside are planted with hop plants. The main varieties grown are Wye Target, Northern Brewer, Challenger, and Hallertau. Hop fields have typified the landscape since the middle ages after the decline of the cloth trade because of quarrels with neighbouring Ypres.

Poperinge still produces 75 % of the Belgian national hop harvest, which is important for a beer-producing country like Belgium. As hop gives flavour to some of Belgium’s most powerful ales, including the legendary 12-degree dark tripel from the neighbouring Saint-Sixtus monastery. In June 2005, Westvleteren 12 was again highlighted as “Best Beer in the World” in a biannual competition on RateBeer.com.

Hop (botanically also known as humulus lupulus) belongs to the hemp family. The plant is also used in pharmaceuticals (to make sleepinducing pills and to counter side effects of the menopause). Hop shoots are served in the finest restaurants from January to mid April. Because of the short period of availability and the labour-intensive culture, hop shoots are considered to be the most expensive vegetable in the world. The first kilos are generally sold by auction for as much as 999 Euros per kilo!

Some years ago, Dirk Wynants bought himself a farm in Poperinge, the Hop Capital, which is less than 20km from the Design Capital Gijverinkhove, where extremis’ headquarters are based.

He immediately decided to establish a entirely new hop garden which is extremely rare, and now he’s harvested his own hops, for the second time in a row. The total hop garden area in Poperinge had been decreasing for many years, but now this seems to be changing!

Hop bevat bovendien fenolen, die sterk lijken op het vrouwelijk hormoon oestrogeen, en daardoor ongemakken bij vrouwen in de menopauze bestrijden. Er wordt zelfs beweerd dat het bloed van bierdrinkende oudere mannen hierdoor meer vrouwelijke hormonen bevat dan hun vrouwelijke leeftijdsgenoten.

During fermentation, the wort becomes beer in a process which requires a week to several months depending on the type of yeast and strength of the beer. Additional fermentation can take place in the bottle as is the case with Tremist. This results in a better taste and a longer shelf life.

We have the pleasure of tasting a refreshing beer like Tremist thanks to a labour-intensive brewing process. Especially in Belgium, brewing is true craftsmanship with a strong cultural value. The purpose of brewing is to convert a starch source into a sugary liquid called wort and to convert the wort into the alcoholic beverage known as beer in a fermentation process effected by yeast. The first step, where the wort is prepared by mixing the starch source with hot water called “liquor”, is known as “mashing”. The sweet wort is put into a kettle, or “copper” and boiled.

TREMIST, THE

BEER GLASS DESIGNED BY NEDDA EL-ASMAR A special beer needs to be served in a special glass. Nedda El-Asmar is a Belgian designer who makes poetic utensils combining classic elegance with contemporary design.

For togetherness reasons, Tremist only comes in 75 cl botlles, enough to fill 4 Tremist glasses. In Belgium, most card games require 4 players. Move the bottle gently while pooring, otherwise you will mix the second fermentation yeast at the bottom of the bottle. Yeast lovers can add this to their beer or serve it in a separate glass. Otherwise, just leave about 5 millimetres in the bottle.

Her stylish water pipe Narghilé has already featured as centre-piece of the Extremis Behive Lounger. This time we asked her to design the Tremist glass. Hop fields, the hopper table, the new logo and also the characteristics of the Tremist beer inspired her for this glass.

° 1kg of stewing beef cut into bite-size

Use a saucepan to very slowly fry the onions until golden.

Brown the meat in a pan and add it to the onions. Deglaze the pan with Tremist beer and add to the saucepan with all of the spices and stir. Cover the bread slices with a thick layer of mustard and put them on top of the meat, mustard side facing up.

Gezonder dan water?

In de middeleeuwen brouwden de meeste mensen thuis hun eigen bier. Dat kwam onder andere door een gebrek aan zuiver drinkwater.

Pas met de verstedelijking ontstonden de eerste commerciĂŤle brouwerijen, waardoor de productie van bier wel meteen veel professioneler verliep.

In de steden was het gebrek aan zuiver water het grootst, en dus

was ook de behoefte aan bier daar groter. Al snel had elke stad haar eigen brouwerijen. Het lokale bier was immers altijd goedkoper, want men betaalde er geen invoerrechten voor. Er waren vele kleine steden met elk hun eigen brouwtradities, en dat zorgde op termijn voor een groot en divers aanbod.

Hopper inspired by hop pickers and hop gardens

Until the late 1950s hops were picked by hand, causing a migration towards Poperinge which doubled the local population.

Some 10,000 foreign hop pickers (or hoppers) made their way to Poperinge during harvest time and played an important economic role: the wages were mainly spent on buying coal for the next winter.

A coffee break or lunch, seated at long rows of tables and benches near the hop gardens, interrupted the monotonous hop-picking rhythm. Food and drinks were also served during the “Hommelpapfest� marking the festive end of the picking season.

These harvest feasts together with the inclination of the hop poles triggered the design of the new Extremis Hopper table.

EXTREMIS’ BESTSELLER RANGE STICKS KEEPS ON EXTENDING In addition to the LED illuminated Sticks, which were launched recently, Extremis is presenting yet another version of its famous space divider: Sticks Curved. The name speaks for itself; this version has a curved base. The various possibilities with Sticks curved are really inexhaustible: when combining for example 20 bases, you can create a 4 meter diameter circle, which fits extremely well around any roundshaped piece of furniture.

By alternating the direction of the bases, Sticks Curved can be used to create beautiful curving lines.

Donuts is too often referred to as an American cop’s favourite diner, the donut. To eliminate this misunderstanding, we want to show you why this product is called do NUTS! ° DoNuts, the perfect vessel to be rescued in style. ° Design is going downhill... fast. ° These soapbox racers received the price for the most original vehicle. ° The perfect piece of furniture to take with you on your holidays.

HOW TO INFLATE YOUR DONUTS One of Extremis’ most popular designs faces a F.A.Q. (frequently asked question). How do you inflate the thing?

We recommend using a compressor. First of all position the tire inside the cover. Inflate until a round shape is visible. Now close the zipper and inflate until a pressure of 0.15 bar is reached. Use the included digital tire pressure gauge to check the pressure.

This chemical experiment will show you how to inflate your DoNuts without having to use your mouth or any pump. Put 50g of biocarbonate of soda inside a 20 cm long heat-shrink tube. Use this heat-shrink tube to connect a jerrycan filled with white vinegar to the valve of the tire, without mixing the soda with the vinegar. Shake the tubing so that the biocarbonate of soda reaches the vinegar inside the bottle. A chemical reaction will inflate your Donuts in no time!

Probably the slowest but most relieving method to inflate your Donuts is following a strict onion soup diet for 3 weeks. Onion soup will cause flatulence. All these redundant gasses can easily be guided into your Donuts tire. After this healthy diet you will be in the best shape to relax on your new piece of furniture.

The “Brain Cell� structure is employed in the main body of the pavilion, which is also the design concept of the building.

The inspiration for the “Brain Cell� neuron comes from Belgium’s rich achievements in science and art, and its status as one of the European Political Centers.

The open space around the pavilion is furnished by Extremis.

At the entrance of the pavilion there are Gargantuas, Inumbras, Abachus tables, and Inumbrinas.

On the first floor there is a closed terrace where people sit at various Extempore and Picnik tables. Sticks are used to display big flatscreens.

Young Extremis I It is not only furniture that is new at Extremis. After a period of serious testing, we are very proud to announce the latest addition to the Extremis family: Jack, son of Laure (marketing) and Ruben. Jack was presented to the world on 7th June. Reactions were overwhelming. Developers Laure and Ruben immediately decided to cash in on the success, get married and start thinking about designing a successor for Jack.

Table football As Belgium once again did not qualify for the World Cup 2010, the colleagues from Extremis decided to organize their own championships. Equipped with a RS-Barcelona football table, 4 teams competed in the firstever Extremis Football World Cup. Many times the battles were Extremisly exciting, with fierce tackles and trick shot goals.

Emotions raised high as the tension mounted. The team with favourites

extreMISS competition 2011 If you’re young, dynamic, looking to end all wars, create world peace, eradicate poverty and hunger. Young Extremis II Due to the success of Jack, others within Extremis also saw the opportunity to present their own “products”. The trial and error stages have already been completed and almost ready to present to the world are the newcomers of Birger (Workshop) due mid of October and Céline (Export Manager) due end of October. We would like to congratulate them and encourage them to keep up the good work!

Steve (Product development) and Bram (product design) finally took home the trophy. They will have a tough time defending their title next time.

Young Extremis III Even experienced people are sometimes inspired to look for innovation again. Liselot (spouse of Goswin, Export Manager) is seriously working on the 3rd success in line. Presentation is planned mid March 2011. We will keep you informed.
