Being real pleasure lovers we brew our own home beer ‘Tremist’ to clink to hopper. The next 2 steps were our own beer glass and coaster.

Hops also contain phenols, which closely resemble oestrogen, a hormone manufactured naturally by a woman’s body. Hence, they are commonly used for relieving menopause symptoms. Allegedly, older beer-drinking men have more female hormones in their blood than females of the same age category.

Poperinge is known as the ‘Hop Capital’ of Belgium. 180 hectares of the surrounding countryside are planted with hop plants. The main varieties grown are Wye Target, Northern Brewer, Challenger, and Hallertau.

Hop fields have typified the landscape since the middle ages after the decline of the cloth trade because of quarrels with neighbouring Ypres.

Because of the short period of availability and the labour-intensive culture, hop shoots are considered to be the most expensive vegetable in the world. Poperinge still produces 75 % of the Belgian national hop harvest, which is important for a beer-producing country like Belgium. As hop gives flavour to some of Belgium’s most powerful ales, including the legendary 12degree dark tripel from the neighbouring Saint-Sixtus monastery.

Some years ago, Dirk Wynants bought himself a farm in Poperinge, the Hop Capital, which is less than 20km from the Design Capital Gijverinkhove, where extremis’ headquarters are based.

He immediately decided to establish a entirely new hop garden which is extremely rare, and now he’s harvested his own hops, for the second time in a row. The total hop garden area in Poperinge had been decreasing for many years, but now this seems to be changing!

During fermentation, the wort becomes beer in a process which requires a week to several months depending on the type of yeast and strength of the beer. Additional fermentation can take place in the bottle as is the case with Tremist. This results in a better taste and a longer shelf life.

For togetherness reasons, Tremist only comes in 75 cl botlles, enough to fill 4 Tremist glasses. In Belgium, most card games require 4 players. Move the bottle gently while pooring, otherwise you will mix the second fermentation yeast at the bottom of the bottle. Yeast lovers can add this to their beer or serve it in a separate glass. Otherwise, just leave about 5 millimetres in the bottle.

This is where Dirkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home-grown hops come in as a source of bitterness, flavour, and aroma. The longer the hops are boiled, the more bitterness they contribute. This explains the authentic taste of Tremist. After boiling, the hopped wort is cooled, ready for the yeast.

We have the pleasure of tasting a refreshing beer like Tremist thanks to a labourintensive brewing process. Especially in Belgium, brewing is true craftsmanship with a strong cultural value. The purpose of brewing is to convert a starch source into a sugary liquid called wort and to convert the wort into the alcoholic beverage known as beer in a fermentation process effected by yeast. The first step, where the wort is prepared by mixing the starch source with hot water called â&#x20AC;&#x153;liquorâ&#x20AC;?, is known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;mashingâ&#x20AC;?. The sweet wort is put into a kettle, or â&#x20AC;&#x153;copperâ&#x20AC;? and boiled.

Her stylish water pipe NarghilĂŠ has already featured as centre-piece of the Extremis Behive Lounger. This time we asked her to design the Tremist glass. Hop fields, the hopper table, the new logo and also the characteristics of the Tremist beer inspired her for this glass.

Due to the lack of safe drinking water most people in the Middle Ages brewed their own beer at home. Growing urbanization led to the opening of commercial breweries and to the professionalization of the beer-brewing process. As the shortage of safe drinking water was most severe in towns and cities, beer was in greatest demand in urban areas. Soon each town had a few breweries. Locally brewed beer was also cheaper, as no import duties had to be paid. There were many towns and cities each with their own brewing traditions, which over time resulted in a large and diverse range of beers.

The amount of alcohol in the blood or the blood alcohol content (BAC) is usually expressed as a fractional percentage in terms of volume of alcohol per volume of blood in the body. A BAC of 0.5 per mille for instance means that 1 cc (= 1 millilitre) of blood contains half a milligram of pure alcohol. Under the current traffic code the alcohol level can also be determined by the breath alcohol content (BrAC). This is expressed as the number of milligrams of pure alcohol per litre of exhaled breath. A certain amount of pure alcohol does not always result in the same BAC. Pure alcohol is in fact dissolved evenly throughout the body water and the amount of body water varies from individual to individual. More corpulent people have more body water than slimmer people. Hence the same number of drinks will have a bigger effect on slimmer people. There is also a difference between men and women: As a female body contains less water per kilogram of body weight than a male body, a woman will have a higher BAC if even both have had the same number of drinks. Men also absorb more alcohol from the stomach than women.

%((5 7$67,1* Beer should be tasted in order from the lightest in alcohol and progress to the highest in alcohol, as alcohol enhances the taste. Beers with a high alcohol content and consequently a stronger taste can ruin the palate for lighter beers with more subtle smells and tastes. Bread is often provided to neutralize the taste buds on the surface of the tongue.

7+( /,1. %(7:((1 %((5 $1' %$' 6(; Everybody knows that when drinking in group you usually clink glasses with your fellow drinkers. As with many of our food traditions, the clinking of glasses traces its root to the dark Middle Ages when rivals often tried to kill each other off by poisoning their food or drink. The clinking of mugs was a way for beer to be passed back and forth between mugs to prove it was safe. A person with evil intentions could easily be singled out as he would refuse to drink the beer. What many people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know is that this custom was not really widespread, but mainly used in court circles. Over time, this custom fell victim to the snobbery of the conceited courtiers, who considered clinking crystal glasses much more stylish and elegant than clinking stone mugs. However, glasses have to be handled with greater care, so the liquid did no longer pass back and forth between glasses. But as the eyes are the mirror of the soul, people now looked deep into the eyes of their drinking partner to find out what his or her intentions were. Sleeping around was quite common in court circles and being unable or too scared to look your partner in the eye, was soon considered as a sign that you were having an affair. It goes without saying that after finding out the partner did not fancy having sex. Hence the superstition that not looking someone in the eyes while clinking means seven years of bad sex.

At first sight, the formula for calculating the blood alcohol content seems quite complicated: BAC (a x 10)/(g x r) - (u â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 0.5) x (g x 0.002), in which a = number of drinks, g = body weight, r = for men 0.7 and for women 0.5, u = number of hours since the first drink. What is the pace of the alcohol breakdown in the body? The answer is both simple and straightforward: its own undisturbed pace, approximately 0.002 per mille per kilogram of body weight per hour. Although many, often individual, factors play an important role in the process, it is in general safe to apply the following rule: Alcohol breaks down in the body at a pace of approximately an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half per drink. The only way to sober up is to give your body time to process the alcohol consumed. Spending time outdoors, drinking strong coffee, taking a cold shower, exercising, taking vitamins or trying other folk remedies has no effect whatsoever. Unfortunately...

Recipe Use a saucepan to very slowly fry the onions until golden. Brown the meat in a pan and add it to the onions. Deglaze the pan with Tremist beer and add to the saucepan with all of the spices and stir. Cover the bread slices with a thick layer of mustard and put them on top of the meat, mustard side facing up. Cover and cook on low heat for about 2 hours, until meat is tender.

hurray $ 1(: 67$5 ,6 %251 Hopper, which made its public debut at the Interieur Design Biennale in Kortrijk, Belgium, was a real showstopper at this fair. The ‘public’ was immediately sold on hopper. Belgian and foreign journalists, dealers, students, and consumers alike all declared that hopper is nothing less than a new design classic.

As all the other Extremis designs, hopper perfectly combines an innovative and functional design with the right looks and a very strong feeling of togetherness.

,17(5,25 ,1129$7,21 $:$5' Although presented only a few weeks ago, hopper has already been chosen to receive a prestigious award, more precisely an Interior Innovation Award. This award which is organised by the ‘Rat für Formgebung’ and the ‘German Design Council’ gives prominence to outstanding achievements in the furnishing sector.

For the latest member of the Extremis family, Dirk Wynants got inspired by the hop culture and his very own hop garden. He was thinking about the large groups of hoppers and farmers who used to celebrate the end of the hop picking season at long rows of tables. Also ‘The Peasant Wedding’

by Pieter Breughel ‘the Elder’ and the well-known beer-festivals appeal to the same spirit of sitting together at a

long table for pleasure and enjoyment.

Hopper comes in 4 sizes which will allow you to ‘play’ with it and attain exactly the length you are looking for.

Regardless of how long you make the row, boarding the hopper stays easy, thanks to four pass through zones on each table. Optional light, water and fire features and a new shade maximize the hopper-experience.

Inumbra is unique because of its pure aesthetics. All technical parts that open and close the screen are above inumbraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s UV resistant fabric and consequently are not visible when seated under the parasol. Inumbra is easy to open and close: the parasol opens and closes by means of a separate handle.

The kosmos parasol opens and closes as a fan offering several advantages. Magnets incorporated in the parasol’s two ribs ensure that the parasol remains open. In very windy weather the magnets get detached and the parasol closes automatically. In its open position, the parasol can withstand wind force 6.

A shade has been provided for the new hopper table. But don’t worry if you already have another table, the shade is available as stand alone as well, with any other rectangular table.

When closing the shade, the water repellant cloth rolls itself up, in order to be wrapped easily in a protective cover.

It has a round shape in which you can sit or relax, with the added bonus of a table. At its lowest position and with the cushion, it offers a completely flat surface transforming kosmos into a giant lounger. Options such as the parasol, light and dimmer transform kosmos into a real oasis of rest. The name speaks for itself; this version has a curved base. The various possibilities with sticks curved are really inexhaustible: when combining for example 20 bases, you can create a 4 meter diameter circle, which fits extremely well around any roundshaped piece of furniture.

By alternating the direction of the bases, sticks curved can be used to create beautiful curving lines. Their organic shape transforms your interior into your personal isle of peace and calm, even if your surroundings are hectic.

This new version of sticks clearly offers a multitude of possibilities to playfully divide up a room. The curved base can be combined with the straight base as well, while the pattern of the rods in

each base still runs smoothly into the following one. Just as with the other sticks all rods are available in different heights (120 cm, 150 cm, 180 cm, and 210 cm) and different colours: white, light mint colour, black, wood colour, and green. The number of rods needed to fill a curved base is identical to the number needed for a standard 60 x 30 cm base. For the moment it is only available in wood but other versions might follow later.

This enlightenend base (60 x 30 cm) is available in two versions: rectangular or curved. They can be used on their own or put in a straight line. The effect of the illumination in the room and also on the ceiling is amazing. In 2011 we also present the outdoor version of sticks enlightenend in rubber (60 x 30 cm). The rods are available in all lengths and colours.

Right from the start, Extremis has taken a great interest in the Patient Room of the Future project, a truly innovating patient room concept in which patient needs take centre stage. Extremis did not only design the outdoor furniture, but also created the overall look of the outdoor spaces. The fruitful collaboration between the several instances, hospitals, architectural offices and universities resulted into this very successful project.

Important in this project is that all rooms are equipped with a balcony, so patients can get some fresh air. It is scientifically proven that sufficient fresh air encourages the healing process. For this project, a special version of the hopper has been developed. Half a hopper frame serves as a table or back rest, combined with a bench. There was enough space provided so that people in a wheelchair can easily take place. Find out more on: www.prof-projects.com

shanghai world expo %(/*,$1 3$9,/,21 “Better City, Better Life” was the principal theme of the Belgian EU pavilion during the past World Expo in Shanghai.

This theme stood for durability and was characterised by pure lines and recyclable materials. The organisers deliberately kept free a green zone of one third of the total space. This green zone was completely furnished with Extremis furniture.

At the entrance of the pavilion there were gargantua’s, inumbra’s, abachus tables and inumbrina’s. On the first floor there was a closed terrace where people could sit at various extempore and picnic tables.
