Editor’s Note Hello everybody!! Humidity levels are gradually rising along with the political heat. Really the political scenario in the state is fascinating even to many senior journalists . As I mentioned in my earlier editorial the impact of Aam Aadmi Party is started in our state also. What I mean is not exactly about AAP. I hope you got it. Yes.! I mean the impact of AAP gave birth to Pawankalyan`s new party in the state. Of course, we can say that aap gave enough confidence to many leaders who have real convictions. Let us take the case of Pawan Kalyan. It is not new to the people of our state that a film actor entering politics. We all know that some people rocked the sky and some people remained on the earth only. Ok let us not discourage anybody because of our past experiences. We must welcome this sign and hope that these people will change the fortune of the state. But people like pawankalyan who want to choose their career in politics must be aware of one thing. Politics is not ruling people,it’s all about caring people. The person who has patience to care each and every citizen is always welcome. All the new politicians must be very careful that they should not commit historical mistakes, because these mistakes may abort their political career. Ok anyway we must be more aware than our politicians isn’t?

GET READY... Whether it’s your favorite day, mod or goth, animal inspiration or colours, make sure that your clothing ensemble works with your shoe choice and weather. Pick your accessories, make-up and hair after your have decided what ‘look’ you are trying to achieve. I’m not saying you have to ‘match’ per se, but rather that everything works together overall.

Don’t be afraid to give your eyes the extra definition needed to make an impact for the camera. A thin line of black liner and mascara will not look too ‘hard’ for a daytime look. Also it is quite easy to look ‘washed out’ in photos so a pop of colour on the cheeks is a must. Neutral colors on the eye work for all (beiges, browns and black).

Pick your outfit in advance to allow yourself time to determine your hair, make-up and accessories. Do not underestimate the time needed to do this! Lack of time is the reason many are forced to wear the plain black dress that is an absolute shame when you could be going all out.

Contouring is the cheek bone is always very flattering but most people shy away as they think ‘too complicated’, this is a myth! All you need to know is where to

You may also want to take into consideration what your ‘plus one’ is wearing to events to ensure you make those photographers fight over you! Follow these make-up guidelines: Definition, blending (to avoid hard lines), and choosing a color scheme complimentary to your skin tone and outfit.

18

apply a good tool for this is the ‘Blush up Brush’. You can make a ‘fishy face’ and seeing where your cheek indents apply bronzer starting from the top of this bone a work towards the mouth. This should be a matte bronzer (two shades darker than your skin).

Apna Hyderabadi Brand ITHI “I just did not want to Confine my designs To a single boutique. I want Ithi to grow As a brand by itself”

Hyderabad has become a thriving place for clothing brands. Since the past decade, there have been many national and international brands which have eyed the Hyderabad market and have opened their stores around the city. But here is one brand which is our own.

Ithi, a brand owned by Sandhya Malkud, is now growing to be popular. She does not have a boutique or any specialized outlet. She has started to design and make clothes of her own brand and showcase in various outlets in the city. Eyeblink spoke to her about her endeavors in the business.

“It all started 9 years ago when I used to take offers from close circle people from the US and export sarees to them. Then I slowly started taking offers from others too. After doing a lot of exhibitions and shows, I now have a clientele of my own. It has been tough initially but now its all going well and I like the way its going”, said Sandhya Malkud. When asked about the inspiration she draws for her designs,”I usually do not draw any inspiration. I design what just comes to my mind. But my taste in designing and my choice of colors is widely appreciated by the clients”, she said. Usually, such designers have their own boutique and will sell their own products. But Sandhya has some bigger plans. “I just did not want to confine my designs to a single boutique. I want Ithi to grow as a brand by itself. That is the reason I am willing to showcase my designs in any exhibition, other boutiques and fashion parades. Its just not about the sales. Its about building a brand”, said Sandhya. “My family, kids, husband and everybody support me a lot. That is the only driving force I have. My clients are also like my extended family. They expect new designs and latest trends from us and we readily deliver. More than my designs, my clients like me for the way I talk and engage with them”, said Sandhya, talking about her family and clients. Sandhya said that the journey till here is very gratifying and is looking forward to expand her business and deliver quality stuff to her clients. Team Eyeblink wishes her good luck in all her future endeavors.

COLLEGE TO FILMS VIA MODELING Tollywood has a special feature specially when it comes to heroines. The top chair in the heroes is more or less constant for a long time but the tenure of heroines is too short. Hence we often see new faces popping up and trying their luck at the Box Office. Here is another such sexy seductress who hails from Shimla. Asmita Sood, who has three films to her kitty already, is looking to make a mark in the South Indian Cinema. She has done Brahmigadi Katha with Varun Sandesh and Aadu Magaadra Bujji with Sudheer Babu. Her latest flick Aa Aiduguru is up for release. In conversation with Eyeblink, she recollects her journey into her films. “I had no plans to become an actor. While I was doing my graduation in Delhi University, I used to just click pictures with friends casually and this has turned into an obsession. They suggested me why shouldn’t try modeling and I too though why not. I enrolled with Elite Model Management and started doing Ad films and photo shoots for various products. I also participated in the Channel V Get Gorgeous program and stood among the top 5 contestants. I used to visit Bombay frequently and that’s when a coordinator spotted me and suggested that I would act in Telugu films. I was a bit skeptical initially but after the auditions and discussions with my friends, I accepted the offer and that was my first film Brahmigadi Katha”, she said. Asmita has also done one film each in Kannada and Malayalam which were runaway hits and is being approached by films makers from the respective industries too. She has done Victory with Sharan in Kannada and Anchu Sundarikal with Anwar Rasheed in Malayalam. But she says that her focus currently is only on Telugu films.

Getting back to her roots, Asmita hails from an orthodox Himachali family. Her father is a hotelier and mother is a house wife. “My parents were a bit scared initially. Obviously, none of the parents want to see their kids wearing skimpy clothes on screen but I am a professional and this is how it is here. They still don’t understand the business”, quips Asmita. When asked about her take on relationships,”I have had quite a few relationships during college days but none of them worked out. I realized that men of my age are too immature. Hence I get along well with men, who are a little older than me. After college, I really have no time for relationships. I’m focused on my work and I don’t trust guys from the film business.”, Said Asmita. Asmita is also an ardent fashion follower and has participated in the Miss Inda pageant. “It was like a dream come true for me. Walking the Ramp for Miss India is really one of its kind. I gained a lot of confidence after that pageant. I was among the top 10 finalists in the event”, she said. About her further plans,”I never planned anything and it just happened. So I realized that things won’t go according to our plan. Hence I will just go with the flow and will give my 100% to whatever I do”, said Asmita before signing off.

My parents were a bit scared initially. Obviously, none of the parents want to see their kids wearing skimpy clothes on screen but I am a professional and this is how it is here. They still don’t understand the business -Asmita 25

The Revolutionary Film Maker

Saraswati Kavula is a documentary film maker and an Environmental Activist. Every movie she made addresses some serious issues in our state. She is also working with NAPM, National Alliance Of People’s Movements, which is founded by Medha Patkar and is fighting the war on behalf of many unheard and downtrodden voices. As Women’s Day special feature, Eyeblink presents you the inspirational story behind this gutsy woman. Born and brought up in a typical middle class family in Hyderabad, Saraswati’s father is a government employee and her mother is a house wife. Though they did not live a luxurious life, her father ensured that all his children got good education. “Though we were a conservative orthodox Telugu family, my father has given us the freedom to pursue whatever we wanted to do”, said Saraswati.

30

After her graduation, she worked with the corporates for a couple of years and realized that this is not what she wanted to do. She thought that media would be a powerful medium to express her views and question authorities. She then pursued her masters in documentary film making. She did work for a few commercial films as well but she chose documentary films over them. “Through my films, I constantly discuss issues”, she says. Commercial cinema does pay well but making documentaries is not an easy job. When asked how she manages with her finances, “I don’t really need much money. I save for my travel expenses when I have to go out for expeditions or camps and I earn for whatever I need. Moreover, My parents are always there to support me and my elder sister is also a great support. I am not interested in lavish lifestyles and luxury living and I'm content with whatever I have. I get immense satisfaction from whatever I do”, she says. Saraswati has been a longtime activist and has been raising her voice every time she thinks something immoral is happening. But she never joined any organization or set up an NGO. In

2008, she has joined the NAPM and has been consistently participating in all the activities of the organization. “On behalf of NAPM, we fought the people’s movements at Nalgonda and Kovvada Nuclear power plants, Sompeta Thermal power plant, open cast mines in Khammam and the to be submerged villages of Polavaram”, said Saraswati. Since childhood, Saraswati has been attached a lot to nature. Even today, she travels a lot and is one of her passions. But whenever and wherever she goes, she finishes off her trip with minimum expenses and is basically a backpacker. “I travel a lot and I wish to see the world. I have also been on several treks and nature walks. That is the reason I get agitated when something antienvironmental is happening. We do not have the right to live by meddling with someone else’s life”, says Saraswati. Well, the journey of Saraswati Kavula is no doubt a hard road to travel but it is because of people like her that the voices which are unheard and suppressed are heard, and the problems they are facing are brought to light. Kudos for her work and dedication. Respect.

The Big Bird Day This is the group of birders in Hyderabad who explore, discover, photograph and maintain a record of different species of birds which are seen around us. Speaking to us about this whole birding thing, Mr. Srinivas Mulagala, the leader of the Hyderabad Birders Group, has said many interesting facts about the advent of birding, bird photography and birders in the country. Dr Salim Ali, often called ‘The bird man of India’ has pioneered the bird watching concept in India. Since then there have been different groups across the country which cater to bird watching and bird photography. They were all scattered and was no official record of how many groups are actually taking up the job seriously.

"The objective of The Big Bird Day is to count and report the number of bird species visible and available. This data helps to analyse the change in trends of bird migration, habitat conditions, bird diversity and related ecological issues".

The Big Bird Day was initially started by the Delhi Birding group founded by Nikhil Devasar and Bikram Grewal as an informal event held in February or March. The first Big Bird Day was held on February 22, 2004 when 236 species of birds were recorded across Delhi. Every year since then self-organised volunteer birders under the guidance of chosen group leaders cover the fields and wetlands in and around Delhi from early morning until late in the day to spot bird species. Over the years, the data collected have revealed the changing trends in habitat condition, bird diversity, migration and related ecological issues. The highest number of bird species recorded in a Big Bird Day was 271 in 2005.

33

So in 2004, the Big Bird Day was initiated by the Delhi Birding Club with an intention to count the number of species visible on one single day across the city. The birders in Delhi were divided into groups and were sent to different locations in Delhi to count the number of species visible. Here, bird photography is not the motive. Just to document the species available of the motive. So from then on, this became an annual event. Big Bird Day has been conducted on the basis of a few important guiding principles that have allowed it to remain independent, driven by enthusiastic birders and focused purely on the mission of watching and recording bird species. It is not a competitive event or a race. There are no prizes for seeing the maximum number of species, and that should not be the goal. However, with 460 teams from all over the subcontinent searching for birds at different locations on the same day, the data becomes invaluable in measuring bird diversity. It can help create a rich database, especially if accumulated over several seasons and years. This year, The Big Bird Day was held on February 16th and the event was a huge hit. Last year the number of teams participated in the event is 168 and this year the number rised to 468. While most of these teams are from India, 6 teams from Pakistan and other teams from Spain, USA, Dubai also participated in the event. In India alone, the number of bird species recorded was 787, which

34

covers almost 65% of the bird diversity of India say expert birders. Around 3000 birders and enthusiasts participated in this mega event. The Hyderabad team headed by Mr. Srinivas Mulagala set on a drive to count the bird species in Hyderabad. Mr. Srinivas says that selecting the ideal location for bird watching is also an important factor. Birds are usually found at different terrains like wet fields, water fronts, lake sides, wood lands, hilly areas, etc. So the locations we choose must also be in such a way that the diversity fully comes under the cover.

They have chosen four locations in Hyderabad. Himayat Sagar lake side, Ameenpur lake, Botanical Gardens and Pragathi Nagar lake. A six member team has visited all these locations from dawn to dusk and recorded the number of bird species in Hyderabad and the species found was 134. The Big Bird Day is usually held in January or February of every year. This is the time when most of the territorial birds and migratory birds are seen in large numbers. Winter is usually the best time for birders across the country and the number of migratory birds in winter is huge. And this is the optimum time when migration and reverse migration take place. The objective of The Big Bird Day is to count and report the number of bird species visible and available. This data helps to analyse the change in trends of bird migration, habitat conditions, bird diversity and related ecological issues. The goals are to cover as much area as possible while avoiding overlap, to identify and record as many species of birds as accurately as possible, to refrain from disturbing birds or their habitats, to have clean and safe fun, and to encourage and share the joys of bird watching with children and others.

Charminar has 45 prayer spaces and a mosque in it. Visitors can view the architectural splendour inside the Charminar. The monument is illuminated in the evenings and a pedestrianisation project around the monument is under implementation.

Mid-Night Food In The City Hyderabad is one place where there is business in abundance for eateries. From road side stalls to five star hotels, there is a market for everything. But how do we find where and when do we get some tasty food? Eyeblink presents some very interesting places where you can find mouthwatering food after midnight. Mind you! Big hotels like Green Park and Ohri’s offer an excellent midnight buffet but not everybody can afford them. Check out these places.

Ram Ki Bandi: This is the most famous dosa place in the city. Here is a man called Ram, who is famous for

his midnight dosas and idlis. Almost all of the student community knows about this place. Especially if it is exams time, people night out to study and a dosa at Ram ki Bandi before sleeping is the best thing. He is located right opposite to Karachi Bakery in Nampally. He opens at around 2 AM and finishes off by 6 AM. Butter Dosa, Butter idli and Karam Dosa are the best dishes available with him. This one is a must eat for every Hyderabadi.

Yousufguda Dosa Point: At the Yousufguda junction, there is a bus stop which is always busy with commuters. But after 12, it is always busy with customers. There are a good five to six Bandis which serve dosa, idlis, vadas, etc. The best delicacy available here is the upma dosa. There is a Kwality Walls Bandi beside this and you can have your desert as well. Better be there on time as empty vessels are likely to wish you if you go after 3 A M. LB Nagar Egg Dosa: This is another interesting night food joint. But locating this might be a bit difficult. Just opposite to the bus stop in LB Nagar, there is a lane which might look deserted from outside. But if you go in and take the first left, you will see a huge crowd waiting for their egg dosa. This place is famous for this delicacy and along with this; they also offer hot idlis with peanut chutney. Do check this out! Prince Biryani: This is a full-fledged restaurant which is open 24 hours. This is at Mehdipatnam and is famous for its Biryani. It draws full crowds majorly after 12 in the mid night and functions up to 4 AM. They may close the restaurant at 4 and open at 6 sometimes if the business is low but usually, it is running the whole day. Prince is famous for its Ginger Chicken with Roti and Motton Biryani. They also serve hot Irani Chai at every time of the day and most of the people will come for this usually at nights.

Shringar, a specialized designer accessories showroom has opened its outlet at Punjagutta. It has ethnic designer accessories which will surely attract the chicks of Hyderabad. As an inaugural offer, they are offering 15% discount on all products.

Film Nagar Wine Mart, the one of its kind liquor mall has opened its outlet in Film Nagar. Several celebs graced the occasion and congratulated the owners. These kinds of malls are not new to the metro crowds of other cities but are definitely new for Hyderabadis.

Box Office Buzz How much Hyderabadis like films? Quite evident from the number of theaters in the city and the collections from this area along. So lets take a peep into whats making buzz at the box office. Bheemavaram Bullodu: Uday Shankar who has delivered hits like Kalisundam Raa is in a bad phase of his career with continuous flops like Raraju and Baladoor. This time, he has again paired up with Suresh Productions and made this film with Sunil as the lead actor. Sunil also has a flop to his kitty, prior to this film. So this film is a crucial one for both the actor and director. The film has released and is performing poorly at the box office.

Bangaru Kodi Petta: This Navadeep and Colors Swati starrer might not be the much awaited film, but with its trailers, songs and interesting promos, it has gained a certain craze. The film got a delayed release. Though the critics have given mixed reviews to this film, it is not doing well at the Box office. Queen: This film is directed by debutante Vikas Bahl, who produced critically acclaimed films like Udaan, Chillar Party, etc. Kangana Ranaut is the lead actor in the film. The film released with low expectations and is a runaway hit. Music by Amit Trivedi is excellent and the performance by Kangana Ranaut is getting rave reviews. The film is going strong at the BO.

Gulaab Gang: Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla - Now the combination is definitely quite interesting. It is a semi biographical film based on the woman revolutionary movement in UP, Bihar and MP. The trailers looked interesting and the film has good openings. But the negative reviews by critics and bad feedback from the public lead to the disastrous state of Box office collections.
