ast month saw Volcanoes, Election trails, BBQs, Two Bank Holidays and possibly one of the quickest months we’ve experienced in a long time. Our April magazine has met praise among readers old and new. We’ve noticed a few new names popping-up on the email and our old friends seem to be singing praise for the new magazine. We’re not going to lie. It’s been tough, raising the funds, revamping the website and finding the right articles, not to mention the distribution. But we’ve love every minute of bringing this publication to you. And now we’re doing it all over again. We’ve got some great features this month from an interview with the owner of The Grand Pier in Weston to catching up with the Shapeshifters at the New City Sound’s event at Warehouse. Our new website is just waiting to have the ‘on’ button pressed, and we’re mighty proud of it too. It’s going to be an organic process and relies heavily on the input of our reader contributors. So far we’ve counted 12 people that are regularly contributing but we welcome more. We’re always keen to speak with anyone looking to gain experience, who has a burning desire to write about the local community or someone who can take a mean picture. Your articles will appear online and in our printed magazine. Just drop us an email at editorial@eyezine.co.uk and we’ll get back to you when we can. KONGOSSA AFRICAN NIGHT Kongossa Promotions is the latest name in African club nights. Set up to create nights in Bristol where, although there is a large African population, there were no regular African club events. Kongossa aims to bring African music to the city centre venues with the latest DJ’s and acts. There ain’t no beat like an African beat and we intend to show this to the population of Bristol. They decided to call the night Kongossa, a pidgin word for gossip, because they wanted something that Africans would recognise as their own, and it has a recognisable ring to it that non-pidgin speakers would remember; mainly just wanted to hint to spread the word. Well spread the word we shall, we’ll see you there! The first event is May the 8th at the Warehouse, 57th Prince St. Dress code: However you do it, work it!

JUNGLE RUMBLE MADNESS Many of you will have noticed the curious looking logo lurking around the top floor of Cabot Circus. Jungle Rumble is home to one of the craziest adventure golf courses that you have ever seen. It’s packed with two 18 hole crazy golf courses, a fully licenced bar and cafe. So you don’t have to have kids or be a kid to enjoy the full range of facilities there. The courses are well decorated with various themes from Tiki Huts through to the infamous Volcano eruption, how very apt! Jungle Rumble is located on the top floor of Cabot Circus opposite the ID Est Gadget Shop. It’s open from 10am to

CHANGE FORM COLLECTIVE UBIQUITOUS The passenger shed at Brunel’s Old Station plays host to the latest fashion show to come from the support of UWE. The show is set to feature the work of this years UWE fashion and fashion textiles graduates. A chance for the students to showcase their work and for the public to witness the latest talent to emerge from our city. The event consists of a 2D exhibition, photography, styling, illutration, video, textiles and a catwalk presentation. The event starts at 14:30 through to 18:30 on 22nd May. BRISTOL BLOCK PARTY ODD promotions and Babyhead are taking over The Island home of Carnyville for a weeked summer jam. Hosting the best in Ska, Reggae, Hip Hop and mashup. The event starts on the 29th May with the long awaited release of the First Degree Burns new 5-track EP, “This is Skip-Hop”. CARNY VILLAGE THE INVISIBLE CIRCUS Sometimes things live in your imagination.... Sometimes they show up on your doorstep..... It’s hard to run away from the circus when they follow you home... SEX AND THE CITY Sex and the City addicts in Bristol are being invited to be amongst the first people in the country to see the new film with a special evening of high glamour courtesy of Future Inns at Cabot Circus. Sex and the City 2 premieres in Bristol on May 28 and is one of the most hotly anticipated movie events of the year with the last one breaking box office records and inventing the title of “blockbuster for women”. The film, outtakes from which have already launched a fashion frenzy, will open at the Showcase Cinema de Lux at Cabot Circus on May 28 and by booking through Future Inns it is possible to guarantee your tickets ahead of the crowd. Before seeing Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte SATC fans will also be treated to a cosmopolitan “flirtini”, light bites and a lingerie fashion show produced by Russian “it-girl” designer Olga K. fter the huge success of the latest film Alice in Wonderland, Russell and Zoe decided that it was time to get creative. Knowing they have been approached by a company called PIRATES AND ROSES, a boutique fashion and jewelry company sell what can be only described as powerfull and beautiful pieces. For this shoot we also needed an outfit made to dress our model as alice, we approached Gill Cockwell from Gillywoo couture who was more than willing to make an outfit for us,Gills creativity came to life on the day of the shoot. For more on Gills collection check out our August edition. Below Zoe and Russell work there magic on one lucky reader from Bristol.

Age 18, Student from Bristol Introducing Becky who wrote in feeling more than ready for a complete change of image and with summer upon us now there’s never a better time. So we invited Becky in for a consultation and a skin test (all reputable salons will do) 48hrs prior to appointment. Becky rocked up to the salon with friend Tracey in tow for moral support (or a lift in the car?) although Becky did not need it at all as she came armed with a mood board, well, actually it was more of a book 6 pages long, oh yes bring it on this is what we like to see a girl who has put a lot of time and creative effort into her transformation. There was no doubt in our minds that Becky was ready for this. After looking through Becky’s Book! we realised we needed to put as much thought into this as Becky did into creating a new look for her. Becky’s mood board/book clearly EYEZINE.CO.UK

showed that she wanted to make a statement that said something about herself. In the Booklet! of styles Becky had kindly pointed out all the styles she liked, all the fringes and colours too, another page was all the fabrics and colours she wore and most importantly on another page was all the styles and colours that she didn’t liked and for us as hairdressers that couldn’t be more important. Well, as you can see from the finished result Becky liked the idea of a textured bob with the possibility of a fringe, so we put one in as we thought that a fringe would look fab on her and the colour was a two tone cool and warm Inoa copper (Loreal’s Inoa being the latest in colour technology for maintaining the hair’s condition Minimizing colour fade which reds and coppers are prone to) as Becky had a mixed skin tone where she could go warm or cool so we did both putting a cool tone going through her fringe So a big well done to Becky for making our job a bit easier.

he Hobbs Show, Bristol’s biggest fashion, style and cultural event, is coming back for 2010 after an absence of four years - even bigger than before and with a first ever staging at the Colston Hall. The event will also continue a tradition of being not-for profit – with all the proceeds going to Meningitis UK.

and, over the last 12 years, the event has grown and grown. From modest beginnings in a marquee in a Clifton pub garden, the show has expanded in scope and popularity and – for its last outing – was held in front of 1400 people in the waterfront L Shed. This time the event will be held at Bristol’s biggest indoor venue: the Colston Hall, which has a capacity of over 1,800 plus. The show organiser, leading Bristol hairdresser Doug Hobbs, has always used the platform to showcase Bristol talent – hence its full title ‘The Hobbs Show - Born and Raised in Bristol’, and this year will be no different. “As ever the show will be an alliance between top design labels and home grown talent in music, art, style and fashion. BACK TO BASICS

have decided to document my favorite variations of the four staple exercises I believe should be part of every gym members program over the next four issues. This month I will focus on the push up and give some fun alternatives to try during your workouts. The push up is a great bodyweight exercise which can be done anywhere, heavily used in the military this move has been used for centuries to increase strength, endurance, power and core stability. The primary muscle group used is the pectorals, however the triceps also engage, along with a variety of other core stabilization muscles to perform each repetition.

TRADITIONAL PUSH UPS

Place your hands flat on the floor (at shoulder-width), keeping your arms straight, and elbows slightly soft. Straighten your legs behind you, drawing your feet together. Rise up on your toes so the balls of your feet are in contact with the floor. From your feet to your head your body should form a straight line with your eyes focused on the floor. Keeping your head still, lower yourself under control until your upper arms are parallel to the ground. Pause, then slowly push yourself back up and repeat.

CLAPPING PUSH UPS

The clapping push-up is a plyometric variation of the traditional push-up. In this form, when you push yourself up the aim is to explode off the ground and clap your hands while youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in the air, then land back in original position. This variation is a great way to build power as well as strength and really develop your ability to recruit fast twitch muscle fibres which are responsible for performing high intensity, short, explosive movements.

MEDICINE BALL PUSH UPS

A simple push up can be made so much more challenging by adding in 1 or 2 medicine balls into the equation and really engage all the core stabilisers.

1 Ball – Get yourself into the standard push up position but with one hand on a medicine ball. Drop your bodyweight down, pause, and then on the way up roll the ball over to your other hand and repeat. 2 Balls – A great way to create more depth in your push up is to use the medicine balls to elevate your body. Have one under each hand, lower yourself to the point that your chest is below your hands, push up and repeat.

SINGLE LEG PUSH UPS

This variation exercises your core and glutes very well in addition to the primary muscle groups. Get yourself into the standard push-up position and raise one of your legs straight up a few inches off the floor, lower, press back up and as you reach the top switch legs.

DUMBELL & BAR BALANCE PUSH UP

Please excuse the title of this variation as I am not sure that it has a name as it was shown to me by a colleague. Place dumbbell on the ground under your chest length ways and lay a bar across it with the dumbbell in the center. Take a grip on the bar as you would in a standard push up or chest press, lower your body down, pause, and return back to the original position. The aim of this move is to keep the bar straight and not to let either end of the bar touch the ground. This is a fantastic variation for balance and core stabilisation. ooking out over the County ground, from the Sir Ian Botham stand, in Somerset, I start to lose count of the number of times Justin Langer has run around the edge of the boundary. The domestic match, in which he had been playing finished over an hour ago, but instead of packing his kit bag and leaving like the rest of the team, the former Somerset skipper was out on the pitch, as he always is after a day’s play, circling the lush playing field in the beautiful surroundings of Somerset’s idyllic ground, in Taunton.

“I like to finish a game with twenty laps” he panted. “I believe if you have a healthy body you’ll have a healthy mind.” Adding with some gusto, “When I finish cricket I’m defiantly going to run a marathon.” This, perhaps, is one of the reasons why the man once called ‘the best batsman in the world’, by Mark Waugh, has frustrated many of those on the opposing team. His focus, determination, passion and desire is paramount, and clear from the minute you look into his steel blue eyes. This man means business. First to practice every morning and the last to leave, Langer who has a black belt in taekwondo, explains, “The pain of discipline is nothing like the pain of disappointment. I don’t see enough of it really. If you really want to be the best at something you’ve got to be disciplined in your choices for what you want to achieve.” He continued, “I’ve always been fascinated by boxers. They train so hard and get so switched on you can actually see the focus and all the hard work they’ve put in. I’ve always found that interesting because that’s how you’ve got to be when you walk out to bat. It’s not rainbows and butterflies. You’re going out to fight. Unless you’re aggressive as an opening batsman you’re going to get injured or even worse, out.” As we began to walk around the edge of the pitch, I fail to understand what it is about this gritty player that has enraged England’s cricketers over the years. Far from being an ominous figure, and someone Nasser

Hussain openly said he could have strangled, the Aussie legend is rather genteel and softly spoken. In fact, the first thing that struck me about Justin was how shy he was- and very polite. This may not strike you as particularly surprising, unless you’ve had experience of other superstar sportsmen. Getting them to turn up on time and answer the simplest question can be a nightmare – if, of course you manage to get anywhere near them in the first place, that is! Today’s players are also more often than not totally controlled by their management teams, agents and sponsors. But during my interview, Justin turned off his phone and gave me his full attention. When we’re not discussing his illustrious cricketing career the pocket sized philosopher chats longingly about his family, his love of writing and his garden, which he calls his “sanctuary”. “In my rose garden”, he explains. “I’ve got an apple tree, a peach tree, a nectarine tree, a big olive tree and my herb garden.” Like a philosopher, the man who is small in stature but tall in enthusiasm asks me, “Do you know how good it is to pick your own herbs, from your own garden, for your own cooking? He continued, “We get so caught up in the hustle and bustle, and the business and the stress of everyday life, that we don’t make time for the things that really matter. It’s a cliché, ‘wake up and smell the roses’, but it’s true”. He assures me, “When you smell a rose it really gets you back living in the mould.” Although the proud father of four is always in his garden, back home in Perth, he assures me it isn’t always to inspect the roses, or pick herbs for his tea, as it is here, at the bottom of

his “backyard”- as he calls it- that he has his own, custom-built gym. “I use it for training”, he said, with a huge grin. “It’s a great place to meditate and just escape from everything. It’s like my own little world.” Although his wife, Sue, was aware he intended to build a place to train, she visualised something small. A place that could house a treadmill, a couple of weights and perhaps a stretching mat. He failed to mention the punch bag, the custom-built boxing ring and how a former SAS soldier, covered in tattoos, would arrive every morning to supervise his work-outs. It is here that he prepared meticulously for the 2006/2007 series, in which the England cricket team were demolished five nil and to put it conservatively, embarrassed. Langer, who is a huge boxing fan, explains, “The fight is won before you get in the ring, so I trained like a heavyweight fighter. Losing the Ashes in 2005 was a big kick up the backside and the catalyst behind us regaining that little urn. It gave us determination and a new lease of life.” The gym is a shrine to his all-time sporting hero, Muhammad Ali. “I love him”, Langer says with a smile. “He was such a brilliant, beautiful athlete.” With a certain amount of vigour he continued, “The walls are covered in scribbles from a black felt marker”. He said, “I’ve got quotes everywhere. Quotes about courage and discipline. When I walk in there and look up they keep me going in the right direction. Sometimes I’ll read something and think to myself, ‘I’ve got to have that on my wall’.” Although the left handed batsman recognises his hard work has helped him achieve what he set out to accomplish, he also regards his close bond with, fellow opening batsman, Matthew Hayden as a key factor that helped him turn from yesteryear’s ugly duckling into a stroke-playing swan. The duo who “missed each other” when they were apart would openly exchange bear hugs in the middle, and always gave the impression of two boys living out a dream. “Matthew Hayden’s my best mate, and I think that’s why we formed such a successful partnership at the top order for so long. How many people can say they go to work with their best friend? It’s always going to motivate you.” Reflecting on what has been an incredibly successful career, full of ups and downs Justin tells me about his fondest memories. “I think winning those sixteen straight Tests was probably our greatest achievement as a team. It’s hard enough to win two straight let alone sixteen straight, so to me that was a great thrill. But winning my last Ashes series and beating India, in India for the first time in thirty five years was also special.” This led me nicely into my next question. What would you be doing now if you hadn’t made it in the way you have done? After a short pause, Justin turned to me and with the humble eloquence he showed throughout my interview he explained: “If I hadn’t become a cricketer, I’m not sure what I’d be doing to be honest mate. Because Australia has such a beautiful climate, I was always playing sport when I was a kid. It was

just a natural inkling to play the game.” But after another short pause, Justin continued: “Having said that, I’m quite a determined and passionate character so whatever I set my mind to I hope I would have been successful. I would have loved to have been a doctor or a physiotherapist at school but cricket took over. But I love writing too, so who knows.” Having reached the pinnacle of sporting success, I wondered what advice he would give the next generation of cricketers who wished to become, if possible, the next Justin Langer and achieve all he has accomplished throughout his illustrious career? “It’s very simple James”, Justin said confidently. “You can achieve anything you want to, if you put your mind to it. Obviously you have to have a certain level of natural ability but nothing beats practise. I think it’s very important to have a very positive mindset and a lot of self belief.” As we get towards the end of our second lap around the boundary, Justin, ever the philosopher, turns leaving me with something I thought about the whole way home. “Remember James, twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the things you did.” JAMES DAVIES Web: www.jamesdaviesmedia.co.uk

BIG SCREEN KICK ASS

I’ve been excited about Kick Ass for a long time, so I had already built it up to be the best comic adaptation since Watchmen. I was nearly right. Kick Ass is visually brilliant, the costumes, sets and lighting, in particular the fight scenes, are near perfect. The script is also impeccable, probably partly due to the fact that the film and the comic were written hand in hand that’s how much confidence comic writer Mark Millar had that it would make an amazing film. He wasn’t wrong. Also it has to be said that the films lead Aaron Johnson did an incredible job at an American accent considering he’s from just outside London. It was a treat to be in a cinema screen where everyone seemed to having a good time and enjoying the film. I have one niggle, and really it wouldn’t even exist if I wasn’t a comic lover. The comic is just... better. It has better twists, includes storylines that are more shocking, character development seems more apparent. It just felt a little bit like they left out, what i deem to be fairly important parts, just because they could. I understand the ending was written without actually knowing what Millar was going to put in his installment of the comic, but to me that just seems like a mistake. That said if I don’t have my comparison head on Kick Ass still Kicked Ass. And the soundtrack was brilliant as well. Just maybe make sure you read the comic too. With no powers comes no responsibility... just a great movie.

WHIP IT Whip It is the directorial debut of Drew Barrymore. The story of being your own hero, and finding out who you are. Set in and just outside Austin Texas it tells the story of a girl fighting to find her own path against her mothers insistence she do beauty pageants and finding herself the world of Roller Derby, where a team of misfits become her new family. It sounds like an odd concept, or at least a very girly one. And

it is, I left the theatre feeling a hell of a lot of ‘girl power’ and an overwhelming desire to don some skates and try it myself because it looked so much fun and so damn cool. (I still want to try this, so be warned of the girl whizzing down Park Street looking unstable, it’s probably me). I really enjoyed the film, I understand it’s probably not everyone’s cup of tea but i thought Barrymore actually did an incredibly good job. It’s pleasing on the eye, tells a good story with a good moral - that girls can do anything they want to do without ramming it down your throat, the soundtrack is fun, and she has used some very beautiful shots and edits. In particular the pool scene looks romantic and sweet. Whip It will leave you wanting your own Roller Derby alter ego, I’ve picked Killma Flintstone.

CEMETERY JUNCTION Another Directorial first, this time it’s the turn of Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant to write and direct the story of three friends growing up and coming of age in 70’s Reading. That being where Gervais grew up you can tell this film is extremely close to his heart, it’s shot wonderfully and what could have been a cheesy look back at the seventies is in fact not contrived at all. It looks truthful and brimming full of nostalgia. The kind of relatable heart warming funny that made Gervais a star with the Office in the first place. (think more Tim and Dawn than Brent). Its shining light though comes in the form of the friendship between the three lead friends, well written and brilliantly acted these boys could go far. By the time we get to the feel good ending you honestly feel like you have been on a journey with them, and it wasn’t a chore to do so. Heart warming and sweet but I think Gervais and Merchant can pull something extraordinary out of the bag yet.

his month we’ve managed to grab the attention of Bristol’s self titled ‘Ukulele Supergroup’, ‘The Rinky Dinks’ ahead of the release of their new album which is being launched on 21st May at The Fleece in Bristol. Comprising of musicians from a number of Bristol bands, past and present, the band have a unique spin on the Ukulele and don’t always play the stereotypical sounds you would expect from the instrument. They represent genres as diverse as hip hop, rock, house and pop. We’ve not managed to make it down to one of their gigs yet, but really can’t wait for the 21st!

HELLO THE RINKY DINKS! VERY NICE OF YOU TO SPEND A LITTLE TIME FOR EYE MAGAZINE. CAN WE START BY INTRODUCING THE BAND MEMBERS? (Trev) We’ve got Mike on lead vocals and rhythm uke, Joe on lead uke on vocals and me on rhythm uke and vocals. We’ve also got Quin on drums and Ieuan on bass. WHY DID YOU FORM THE BAND? WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO MAKE MUSIC TOGETHER? (Mike) We all knew each other already and a few of us have been in bands together in the past so when we came up with the idea of what The Rinky Dinks could be, everything literally fell into place. The chemistry was already there, we just needed an excuse to get back out there and do something different. (Joe) We were all probably a bit bored with having not played in bands for a while but didn’t want to go back to doing the guitar thing... Mike lent me a uke over Christmas a few years back and the inspiration was sparked from there... WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU PLAY IN BRISTOL? WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE VENUE? (Ieuan) Bristol’s wicked for live music, we’ve got an amazing following in Bristol (Trev) and Nailsea! (Ieuan) and Nailsea! (Quin) We rehearse in one of our garden sheds at the moment, we don’t need alot of room really... we did a gig at Bristol Grammar school a couple of years ago and we got all five of us and all our kit in one tiny lift!! We tend to stick to a routine as it’s what works best for us, especially a half time fag and a cuppa. We all get on well and have a good laugh anyway so rehearsals can get pretty rawkus, there are some great moments where is all clicks but occasionally can get a bit fractious too... k the clock has gone forward so we are officially in British summertime!! At last, I thought it would never come along. I’ve enjoyed two barbeques on one weekend and actually wore shorts for thirty minutes without feeling chilly. There’s also that fact that we have bank holidays back to back and ever so many parties to enjoy such as Superstylin at Timbuk2. I tell you this for free, I haven’t had that much of a good time since my sixth birthday party. I also attended New City Sound Presents the Shapeshifters on the first BH weekend... Wow, what a night, so much of a night that I had to get an interview with them for a big catch up on their world. Since buying “Lola’s theme” on vinyl It’s an honour getting to talk to these guys… Renny C: Since Lolas Theme have you considered trying to get back to the number one spot?

SS: I don’t really mind it that much as some great talents such as Leona Lewis and Will Young have been found this way,

we’ve actually been working with Will on a new track called “Crazy” and he’s amazing on it so can’t be all bad. RC: Tell us a bit about yourselves and how you feel about music today? SS: You’ll always have a few moments when you feel its hard to keep up with the touring and making music but you just need to take two steps back and see how lucky we are to be able to do what we love and still be so passionate about it even after all these years. RC: What is your view on the current technology that is being used by dj’s & producers..? SS: The technology have indeed changed the way we both DJ and produce music today, compared how it was when I started making records in the early 90’s when you had to have the big mixing desk, several synths, samplers, drum machines and so on. You really had to have quite a lot of money to be able to afford all this equipment. These days you only need a decent laptop what will cost you around 300 quid download illegally some music software, boom, you’re now a DJ and producer so you now have loads of people fighting to become the next big thing oh and having a bit of talent sometimes helps!. Saying that, technology is very important factor in the evolution of music and its making the DJ/Producer much more creative. We’ve just bought the new Pioneer CDJ-2000 where you just organize the tracks on the laptop to then download the playlist on a USB stick where you’ll be playing all the tracks from after its been inserted in the player, a totally new way of thinking when DJing but still have kept the physical elements of touching the plates on the CDJ, definitely the new industry standard. RC: What are the key things you look for when you’re trying to break a fresh new track when touring? SS: The best bench mark for a new track we’ve just done is play it out and see the reactions on the crowd, empty dance floor: go back to the studio and rework, hands in the air: you’re on the right track. RC: Who are your favourite DJ’s Other than yourself? SS: We don’t get the chance to see may other DJ”s these days as we’re always playing ourselves but we do like, ATFC, MTV,

Luciano, Nic Fanciulli, Pookie to name a few. RC: I’m a bit of a dj myself but spread myself way too thin, are there any tips you can give to the budding dj’s/producers out there? SS: How I started to build my profile was to organize my own events self-promoting myself as a DJ and live act then when I though I had strong enough music I started sending it out to several labels around the globe finally getting signed to a German dance label and it all moved on from there on, you need to be very productive and motivated to be able to achieve your goals. RC: Did the Djing did Production come first? SS: Started DJing first back in 88, and then in 92 I bought my first studio bits, Simon started Djing in 91 and Producing in 96 we first produced together in 2003. RC: What was the first record you bought? SS: (Max) Fast Eddie’s “Acid Thunder” on DJ-International (Simon) MJ ‘Off the wall’

RC: So how is the house scene in your eyes at the moment? SS: The scene here in the UK have dramatically slowed down and many good clubs have now closed down, I think the scene here in the UK is going thru a bad patch and just like many other things it will get better. Where it’s really happening at the moment is over in Eastern Europe, in countries like Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia, well any country that ends with “ia” RC: Funniest thing that ever happened at an event/gig? SS: We had loads of fun when we played at BonBon in China a few years back where two small Asian girls working for the club had Leather & metal underwear on and they used grinders to create massive sparks just behind us, then some whips and a few other bits all got a bit weird to be honest! :) RC: What do you do outside of the dance music scene? SS: We both love cars, so anything that involves driving fast. RC: Shapeshifters, thank you!

DJ SQUIRE DIZZEE RASCAL - DIRTY DISCO

Another Diiiirty track from our favourite growing UK artist Dizzee. This will be another big year and summer as the man refuses to drop his good form of club anthems and this is expected to be everywhere this summer. He also revealed he’s performing Glastonbury this year as well as making countless festival appearances across Europe. This electro, club up tempo track is really catchy and Radio Stations have been putting this on blast for you all to hear. Dirty Disco should be out be the time you read this. I recommend you have a listen and be the annoying music lover that can say ‘I had that ages ago’. Look out for album number 5 coming soon as well working with the likes of the Gorillas and possibly a US collaboration.

THE MOON RUNNERS - FEELS LIKE MAGIC Geekness just paid out for these cool 4 individual cats. Meet The MoonRunners bringing energy, inspiration and emotion together to generate a frenzy of creative outputs. To get noticed these guys have grafted and come together to make there own Music, photography, videos, graphic design, DJing, blogging, performances and clothing; Now that’s some creative and inspiring work so they definitely deserve a squire salute. To really achieve where they are going its an easy thing to say but a harder thing to put into practice but MoonRunners have led by example, they have set out to create an exciting buzz and movement from literally a few laptops, a video camera and one microphone and this is only the beginning. Feel like magic is hardly sampled from the DAFT PUNK classic ‘around the world’ So its another group sampling a well known classic but we still love it when they bring it back. I think the boyz heat the stage with this track and get everyone 2-stepping with their hands in the air at least! My mystic musical ball tells me it will be a top UK 40 hit

T.I - I’M BACK

Well…. A track title a bit more original wouldn’t go a miss but never the less the KING is back!. Where has he been? Lets just say a nice small confide and secure holiday break called Jail for unlawful possession of firearms. Don’t judge him… the man makes killer topping US Billboard Albums and growing fan base. Atlantic records have stuck by there promise to keep the females favourite Bad boy signed and ready to go for his new album coming out this year. He brings the southern kick beats to ya door and im feeling it. ‘I’m Back’ produced by the TrackSlayers and is a ‘warm-up’ track to whet your appetite for his forthcoming as-yet-untitled seventh album due August 2010. The official first single is set for release August 9th . Useless fact but ‘AWL’ ran a list of 92 rappers who have released tracks with the exact same title. Don’t think they come back as big as T.I though lets be honest. Cant wait to hear what more is in store.

KELLY ROWLAND - SMOOCHES I don’t know what it is about Kelly (.. Maybe her addictive voice, bikini body, that ‘how you doing smile’) but im down for the music she makes and this one goes without saying. Forget Miss Knowles for a second and hit up this destiny girl .You can take Kelly out the south but you cant take the south out of Kelly & She doing her lil RnB come back after her crazy dance house world with David Guetta & friends. Smooches is out now and will be on her third upcoming studio album which there no word on it release date. The track originally belonged to an artist called ‘Teyana Taylor’ who is showing her anger on Twitter..lets hope that ends nicely. This track was produced by Bangladesh who were responsible Beyonce & Lil Wayne having their world wide top ten success tracks like ‘Video phone’ & ‘A Milli’, hopefully making this new hit will be exciting and another ladies anthem, so watch out fellas. The album will include tracks produced and performed from David guetta , Sean Garret & Rico Love. Sounds good to me… Miss Rowland, whenever your ready.

THE BRONX GHOST OF A THOUSAND MARIACHI EL BRONX THE THEKLA 3RD MAY 2010 DOORS 7PM CURFEW 10PM / £11 ADV / 14+

first saw the Bronx during my gap year in 2004. I pulled up to Amsterdam, found a hostel, saw their name in a local gig listing and decided to attend all within about 10 minutes. Having heard their then latest single ‘False Alarm’ not long before leaving for my jaunt I kind of knew what to expect. After arriving at the Melkweg (The Dutch capital’s former milk factory come concert hall) the rest of the night was a blur of drink; punk; falling over; big bassist and big bass; singer in the crowd; singer being funny; singer being scary and culminating in nearly joining them for a night out after but seeing ‘Lost In Translation’ instead (big regret). I also bought some stickers and someone nicked them from my dorm bed - still sore about that. Since then, they have pretty much been my favourite band.

I’ve watched them progress since then, from their first album to their third. Better artwork and maturing songs, snappier t-shirts, weirder videos, bigger chords, catchier vocals and louder guitars. They are a band that improve and outdo themselves constantly. In modern punk, that’s rarer than a Sid Vicious smack binge. In 2007 the band were offered to perform one of their songs in an acoustic format. Recognising this as cliché and cheesy and never ones to stick to convention, the band decided to perform one of their punk standards through the medium of traditional Mexican Mariachi music. After loving it and discovering they had a special knack for this musical form, they decided to write an entire album of original material under a newfound guise of El Bronx, their Central American alter-egos. Clever eh?! Not only do they play the tunes, they look the part too, by donning traditional mariachi gear and including extra musicians for increased authenticity. From here they undertook the task of relentlessly touring the globe, often with both of their bands sharing space on the same bill. This entailed dressing up, playing an entire set as El Bronx, packing up, changing and then smashing through a headline set of hardcore/punk/rock ‘n’ roll as The Bronx. Night after night, month after month. El Bronx released their debut album last year and far from a novelty, it’s an innovative and exciting record that has helped the band gain wider recognition outside of the punk/hardcore community. All the while, they maintain the snarl and spirit of independence that made them so great in the first place. Considering the above, you can imagine my delight upon hearing that both of these bands are playing Bristol’s very own Thekla. Small enough to let the chaos reverberate off the rafters, and weird enough to feel like you have walked into something historic; the rum soaked hull of the club on a boat is the perfect setting for this messed-up hybrid. Brighton’s Ghost Of A Thousand have taken it upon themselves to play as the worthy buffer between The headliners and their mariachi counterparts and should be well worth a look. 11 quid will buy you a ticket to see three unique bands, a messy and diverse night out and some bragging rights for one of those “wow my Dad is cool” moments for your kids in 20 years time. Enjoy.

s summer arrives here in Bristol the open fronted bars and restaurants of Whiteladies Road are starting to buzz with people spending hours on end doing many peoples favourite past time; people watching! The bars of Whiteladies Road have been a popular hangout for the young and trendy, along with the not so young but still trendy, and a fair few (to be honest) neither young nor trendy for over 20 years now. The first bar to grace this famous strip all those years ago, located at no. 65, has seen its most radical transformation to date in the last year. After all those years as the Hot House no. 65 is now the home to Sasparilla cocktail lounge and bar. THE GRAND PIER WESTON-SUPER-MARE

s part of our continuing local business section we’ve managed to grab some time with local entrepreneur and Grand Pier owner Kerry Michael to get an understanding of what the new Grand Pier is all about. KERRY, THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. FOR THOSE PEOPLE IN BRISTOL THAT ARE PERHAPS NOT TOO SURE WHAT THE NEW PIER IS ALL ABOUT COULD YOU EXPLAIN A LITTLE BACKGROUND? I think there’s always been a misconception when it comes to the Pier if you ask most people what they think of when you mention the Grand Pier in Weston, they’ll tell you Slot Machines. I don’t think that was a fair description previously, and it certainly won’t be going forward. Previously there were about 300 machines on the pier, of which some were gamblers. But the vast majority were fun. Going forward there’s 18 major rides. We often describe it as an indoor theme park, and that’s the sort of idea. There will be thrill rides, there’s gentle rides and your more traditional rides like Dodge‘ems, Ghost train and things like that. There are also 500 machines, but of those 500 machines only 40 are gamblers. These will be in a separate over 18’s, strictly controlled area. It’s a family place. A family entertainment arena, an indoor theme park and there are 26 food and beverage retail outlets.

IT SOUNDS FANTASTIC, DO YOU HAVE PLANS FOR LIVE EVENTS AND CONFERENCES AS WELL? We have a conference centre, 3 separate function rooms, we’ll cater for weddings, and during the winter the machines will come out of the main hall and that area will become an events space. We will have areal circuses, trapezes, product launches, boxing and concerts; we’re licensed for 3500 people for concerts so we’ll have big name artists there. Hopefully we’ll do that job properly! Just a giant indoor event space.

YOU MENTIONED BIG NAMES THERE, DO YOU HAVE ANY PREBOOKED YET? None are confirmed yet, but the target is to get the place open as soon as we can and then around June and July we’ll announce a full events program for the full 12 months ahead.

WHEN IS THE OFFICIAL LAUNCH? We don’t have one. Practical completion, which is when we get the keys, is set for the 25th of June. There after we’ve got to get all of our contents in there and get operational. My team are telling me that’ll take a month, so I’m telling them 5 days!

SO HOW ARE PLANS SHAPING UP? We’re about 7 weeks away from practical completion so it’s a long way down the road. But there still also a long way to go.

HOW LONG HAS IT TAKEN SO FAR? EYEZINE.CO.UK

We stared planning literally straight after the fire in July 2008. We had contractors on site in October ’08, these were demolition contractors. Then in January ’09 we had a contractor doing the enabling work, they looked after the new piling and the sub-structure work. We stripped the entire structure back the bare metal, repaired what needed repairing and replaced what needed replacing. And then coated with a very special resin to preserve the substructure. This was about 9 million pounds worth of work. This was completed by July ’09. Then John Sisk & Son, the main contractor, started work in August last year. And as I mentioned they will be delivering it on the 25th of June.

THERE MUST HAVE BEEN SOME DIFFICULTIES BUILDING ON SUCH A UNIQUE STRUCTURE. ARE THEY ANY MAJOR PROBLEMS THAT HAVE CAUSED YOU ISSUES? The local authority! We feared the planning process, and to be fair to the planners they actually performed. It was all the other aspects of the council that proved difficult. Them as adjoining land owners caused us no-end of problems. Even today they are causing us problems with the sea front works. They have blocked our access, we can’t get delivery vehicles onto the pier. They’ve certainly been the most frustrating element. In their book they think they’ve bent over backwards. But, in the commercial world it’s nowhere near enough. But the single biggest challenge is building a quarter of a mile out to sea. If you’ve got to take a 8 tonne crane out to the end and the pier only takes 2 tonnes then it becomes logistically very difficult. We’ve had all kinds of barges and boats and amphibious landing craft to get it built.

AT THE PLANNING STAGE, WAS THERE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE PUBLIC TO HELP DEFINE THE NEW PIER? At the planning stage we sent out to public consultation. We set a design competition and had 6 architects practices submit their own schemes for consideration. I’m delighted that it was actually a Bristol firm that won the contract, Angus Meek Architects. They were chosen not just by us, but we did a two week Public Consultation process and it was unanimous that Angus Meek were chosen as the clear winner. So that was great.

WITH WESTON BEING SO CLOSE TO YOUR HEART, IT MUST HAVE BEEN A GREAT DAY WHEN YOU DELIVERED THE CHEQUE TO PURCHASE THE ICONIC PIER? Yes, it was bizarre. I never had any aspirations to owning the pier. I didn’t really give it any thought. I grew up on the sea-front in my parents hotel overlooking the pier. I’d open my curtains in the morning and that was the first thing I’d see. Given that it’s quarter of a mile long is sort of dominated the landscape. It was offered to us by a mutual friend by the previous owners. My immediate reaction was “No, why would I want to own the Pier?”, that’s not what I do. I’ve spent the last few years mostly in property development, I had a big garden centre, and a large insurance company. I wasn’t in leisure; I didn’t know anything about rides and machines. Ok, I was bought up in catering, so I knew something about that. But

the main business of the pier, Family Entertainment, we’d never done. So the idea of purchasing the pier was dismissed out of hand.

Over the next couple of weeks I just sort of found myself driving to work in the morning down the sea-front. And going home at night via the pier and just looking at it. I just walked in one day after about 2 weeks and I said, “You know we’ve got to buy it don’t you?”, and everybody knew instantly what I was talking about. And that was it, the rest is history.

HAVE YOU EVER BOUGHT A BUSINESS BEFORE? I have never purchased a business before. All the businesses I’ve had I started from scratch. And this was the first time I had gone out and bought a business as a going concern. What I enjoyed about that was measuring the business going forward against the business as it was previously. You’d make a little change here and a little change there and suddenly the income would go up, you’d think, yes, I got that right etc… By the time of the fire we’d been running the pier for 5 months and we had spent over 1.5 million pounds on it. Then we had the devistation of the fire, it just really took the wind out of our sails. It was horrendous.

THE PUBLIC REACTION TO THE FIRE MUST HAVE BEEN VERY ENCOURAGING. IT’S A WELLLOVED LANDMARK, IT MUST HAVE BEEN AN EASY DECISION TO RE-BUILD IT?

There was never ever and doubt in our eyes. Even the day of the fire we commited to re-building it. And I think that come out of a responsibility for it. It’s not so much you feel you own the pier, you feel like you’re it’s custodian. And, you’re just looking after it for the next generation. To have it burned down, on my watch was, I just couldn’t get my head around it, you know? I was responsible. So, I had to make it good. It’s quite strange because you don’t actually talk about a business like that. But, you know, there’s this building and it just gets you emotionally. Everybody thinks I’m an idiot. Because this happened on my watch. It’s been there 100 years and I’ve owned it 5 minutes and now look at it. It was a responsibility that I felt, you have to put it back. You only have to look around the town the last few years since it’s been closed. It’s a different town. The pier attracts 3 million visitors a year. Well, you can’t afford to take 3 million visitors out of Weston. It has an effect on the entire economy… Now with the new Pavillion, the Sea-front works coming to an end, I think there’s a very bright future for Weston going forward. People that come here in the last few months where you can actually see what’s happened, people are enthused. I think Weston sea-front has got a fantastic 5 or 10 years ahead.

BRISTOL is set for a taste of the Deep South this summer with the UK’s first full-blown US-style barbecue competition and food show. Grillstock 2010 is a barbecue themed two-day food and drink festival taking place at Bristol’s waterfront on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th July. The event will see up to 150 of the UK’s top barbecue chefs battling it out for the title of ‘King of the Grill’ in the two-day competition with an anticipated 10,000 visitors who will all have the opportunity to taste and vote for their favourite BBQ food. Up to thirty teams will compete for the coveted ‘King Of The Grill’ trophy over the course of the weekend with individual trophies for five key categories: Best Chicken; Best Ribs; Best Pork Shoulder and Best BBQ Sauce; and the Best dish made from a selection of ‘mystery box’ ingredients. The overall winner will be the team who gain the highest score in all categories and they will go on to represent the UK at the World Championship Barbecue Competition at the Memphis in May International Festival. COOK WITH US LAMB KEBABS WITH CUMIN AND CORIANDER

VEGGIE BURGERS

Prep time: 25 mins, plus 1 hr marinating time Cook time: 10 mins Serves:4 Tom Parker Bowles’ tender yogurt-marinated kebabs are served with a cucumber and tomato raita

100g cashew nuts 1 tbsp olive oil 1 red onion, chopped 1 carrot, grated 1/2 small leeks, chopped 100g mushrooms, sliced 1 clove garlic, crushed 1/4 tsp thyme, leaves only 100g cooked brown rice 1 tbsp soy sauce 40 g gruyère cheese, grated 50g breadcrumbs 1 tbsp honey 1 egg yolk flour, for dusting 2 tbsp sunflower oil, for frying

INGREDIENTS

450 g shoulder or leg of lamb, off the bone, fat removed 150ml natural yogurt 1 tsp ground coriander 1 pinch ground cumin pinch of black pepper ½ lemon, juice only For the cucumber and tomato raita 250 ml Greek yogurt ½ cucumber, deseeded and finely diced 4 tomatoes or 16 cherry tomatoes, chopped 2 tbsp chopped coriander or mint 1 tsp ground cumin seeds

METHOD

For the lamb: cut the meat into 3 centimetre chunks. Mix together the yogurt, coriander, cumin, black pepper and lemon juice in a medium bowl. Place the lamb in the marinade, mix well, and leave to sit for at least an hour. For the cucumber and tomato raita: mix the yogurt, cucumber, tomatoes, herbs and cumin together. Season to taste and chill until ready to serve. When you are ready to cook the lamb, take it out of the marinade and season, but do not wipe it clean. Thread the meat onto metal skewers, or use wooden satay sticks that have been soaking in water for an hour (to prevent them catching fire). Grill for 8-10 minutes on a barbecue or griddle pan, turning them and basting with the marinade every so often. Serve with the raita.

METHOD

Preheat oven to 180C/gas mark 4. Spread the cashew nuts on a baking sheet and roast for 8-10 minutes Watch carefully as after about 5 minutes the nuts brown quickly. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and saute the onion, carrot, leek, mushrooms, garlic and thyme for 10 minutes, until the vegetables are soft and the liquid has evaporated. Add the rice and cook for 1 minute. Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly. Put the cashews in a food processor and pulse until coarsely chopped. Add the rice mixture and the soy sauce, Gruyere, breadcrumbs, honey and egg yolk with a little seasoning and pulse 5-6 times until just combined. Form into patties with hands dusted with flour to prevent sticking. Refrigerate for a minimum of an hour or overnight. Heat the sunflower oil in a non-stick frying pan. Dust the burgers with flour and fry for about 3 minutes on each side.

A splash of Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp of English mustard A good splash of olive oil Salt and pepper A splash of Tomato ketchup Gently sweat the onions with the thyme, rosemary and bay till the onions are soft to the touch. Allow to cool, remove the bay leaves and then simply add all the other ingredients and mix well. Fry off a little piece to test the flavours and adjust to taste! Form in to 4 large burgers, stick them on the BBQ and enjoy!

FISH OPTION BBQ SEASON IS HERE Were right in the middle of the British Lambing season and with all the sun weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re having what better way to take advantage of them both than with big fat juicy lamb burgers. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be daunted by the long list of ingredients as it really is worth it in the end.

2 red onions (finely diced) A few sprigs of thyme and rosemary (roughly chopped) Bay leaves 800g lamb mince 1tsp ground coriander seeds 1tsp ground cumin seeds 1tps ground fennel seeds 3 egg yolks A splash of Tabasco

If you fancy something a little less meaty then there is nothing better than simple fish on the BBQ and if you ask me the best of all is the cheap and cheerfully abundant mackerel. Mackerel is surely the greatest value for money fish around. This simple marinade will add an extra zing to your fish, so just ask your fishmonger to gut your fish for you and then rub this all over and inside half an hour before popping it on the BBQ. This will be enough for about 4 large fish.

Zest and juice of 2 lemons 1 finely diced red chilli (pith and seeds removed) A handful of chopped dill and parsley Shaved fennel Olive oil Salt and pepper Crushed fennel seeds Crushed cardamom seeds Mix all together in a pestle and mortar before marinating then enjoy your fish served with a warm potato salad and big pile of coleslaw.

ituated in the vibrant heart of the city centre, just a stones throw away from the popular waterfront bars and The Radisson Blue Hotel. Thai Edge is the new Asian restaurant. More than just the average noodle bar Thai Edge has something more exciting to offer. The interior is fairly minimalistic but still in keeping with the authentic Thai theme. We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to experience what this restaurant has to offer. When we arrived we were greeted by a traditional Thai welcome and lead to our table. Our waiter was very attentive and happy to give his recommendation of the specials and which wine would compliment our food. With an extensive menu ranging from the popular pad Thai to the more unusual deep fried lobster with celery, ginger and spring onion. To start we decided to share the Thai edge hot platter. This included spring rolls, chicken satay and fish cakes accompanied by four dips. For my main I went for Musaman Mou, a creamy coconut curry with potatoes, coconut milk, peanuts and onion. My colleague opted for the Gai Yang, a grilled chicken dish toped with sweet chilli sauce. Our mains were accompanied by stir fried mixed

vegetables and Kow Kra Prow Gai which is a special fried rice dish for two people with minced chicken, snake beans, holy basil, garlic and chilli. I would highly recommend this. To finish we shared two desserts, a seasonal fresh fruit platter and a tangy mango cheesecake which was a perfect end to the meal. Thai edge has special set lunch menu, two courses for ÂŁ7.95 available from 12-2:30pm. Exclusive to Bristol they also offer a Pre-Theatre menu which is perfect for commuters on their way home or those about to catch a show at the Hippodrome. This is a set price of ÂŁ9.95 between 5-7:00pm. I will definitely be visiting Thai Edge again in the near future.
