FESTIVAL UPDATE
GLASTONBURY BIG CHILL 2010 ABBEY ANNOUNCE EXTRAVAGANZA 2010 LILY ALLEN It would be difficult to top the success of the 2009 Extravaganza. The sell-out Status Quo concert and the return of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra provided two memorable evenings in the ancient parkland Abbey grounds. The legendary British ska pioneers, Madness, with frontman Suggs, will have the Abbey jumping on Saturday 7th August. Originally from Camden Town, they formed in 1976 and were one of the most prominent bands of the late-1970s 2 tone/ ska revival. Madness racked up over twenty consecutive Top 20 hits in the UK charts with numbers like ‘Our House’ and ‘Baggy Trousers’. Opening the show on Saturday 7th will be 70’s legend Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel most famous for the iconic chart topper ‘Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)’ - one of the most played records in British broadcasting. On Sunday 8th August, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra create a breathtaking family concert with a performance of popular classics full of popular pieces, culminating with a chance to wave flags to “Land of Hope and Glory”. Innovative violinist Nicola Benedetti returns for her third appearance at the Extravaganza, six years after her stunning victory as BBC Young Musician of the Years. We welcome back guest soloists tenor Andrew Rees and soprano Jo Appleby. The Sunday concert will open with string quartet Raven – the resident quartet for the BBC 2 series, Maestro. Raven have performed and recorded with artists such as Gorillaz, Jools Holland, Leona Lewis and Gwen Stefani. August 7th and 8th will be a weekend to pack your picnic and party!

The Big Chill festival bookers have been hard at work setting the soundtrack for the Herefordshire summer. Ivor Novello nominee Lily Allen, one of modern music’s most influential British female singer-songwriters, is set to return to Eastnor Castle Deer Park and take to the Deer Park Stage at this year’s Big Chill Festival (5th – 8th August). With an explosive music career to date, Allen is undeniably a major contributing factor to the emergence of so many strong female British acts in recent years. Allen joins previously announced acts such as Massive Attack, M.I.A., Kruder & Dorfmeister, Thom Yorke, Kelis, Roots Manuva and Plan B who are all set to take to the rolling hills of Eastnor this year. Lily Allen shot to stardom with hit single ‘Smile’ and was the first of a new wave of social network artists that grew their following through the internet. Her single ‘The Fear’ has been nominated for this year’s prestigious Ivor Novello Awards in not one but two categories: Best Song Musically and Lyrically and PRS For Music Most Performed Work. Allen played The Big Chill 2006 as one of her first UK festival dates; now returning in 2010 Lily Allen will be one of the must-see acts on The Deer Park Stage on Sunday night. The Big Chill are honoured and thrilled that she will taking to the Deer Park Stage on Sunday night in what will be one of Allen’s few festival appearances this year. After joining the Festival Republic family at the end of last year, this year promises to be the best yet, combining innovative programming and unique content that the festival is renowned for with the added expertise of the UK’s premier music promoter. Expect it to be bigger, brighter and more fantastic than ever before.

ew York style came to the centre of Bristol over the Bank Holiday weekend as Cabot Circus celebrated the release of Sex and the City 2 by hosting a series of themed fashion shows in Quakers Friars.
EYEZINE.CO.UK
The free shows featured the must-have looks and key pieces from the eagerly-anticipated film, which opened at Cabot Circus’ Showcase Cinema de Lux on 28th May. Each scene contained plenty of fashion-forward inspiration from our favourite New Yorkers, showing the audience how to channel Carrie’s quirky-cool look, replicate Samantha’s seductive glamour, work Miranda’s simple sophistication and copy Charlotte’s romantic take on city chic. Outfits included colourful tailoring from LK Bennett, full skirts and summer florals from Hobbs and Ted Baker and draped dresses in beautiful nude tones from French Connection, Reiss and Warehouse. Also on display were fabulous accessories from Schuh, Ollie & Nic and LK Bennett, together with stunning maxi dresses and gladiator sandals inspired by the colourful holiday wardrobes featured in the film, which was partly shot in Morocco. Harvey Nichols completed the line-up with the hip Halston Heritage collection, which adorned Sarah Jessica Parker in the film and which is now available in the Bristol store, before award-winning jazz dance group Floor Technicians ended the shows on a high by wowing the crowd with their fast-paced routines.
MEN’S SUMMER SKIN. Hi Guys, this month and next are key periods in fashion and grooming and just because the girls are hard at it do not think you are off the hook. These days we are judged so much on our outward appearance it is hard to keep up, so at bespo’ke male grooming and eye magazine we like to give you a helping hand. I expect you will have started to plan your next big break, whether a week in the the sun or a long weekend living it up is all you can stretch to it makes sense to plan your grooming ahead and be ready to bare all as and when necessary. The major points to remember when thinking about looking good on holiday are exfoliation, tanning and moisturising. Exfoliation will prime your skin ready to accept a tan and keep that tan looking great for much longer. It will also lessen the chances of peeling and make your face and body much smoother and younger looking by removing the dead layer of skin on the surface to reveal new, fresh skin. A good quality exfoliator will use minute round beads of an organic matter to roll away the dead skin in a couple of minutes and get your skin ready to take a tan. A good even tan will make anyone look and feel better and with the chances of getting a natural one before you go away fairly slim, your best option is a spray tan. Forget the Tango’d look too as most new, good quality tans are non chemical based and develop over a short period of time to a natural shade similar to your skins natural colour when tanned. They will usually last a week to ten days so you will tan under them returning home the same golden shade you arrived, no more looking like the new Brit on the beach ever again! To make your tan last and keep your skin smooth and protected from skin cancer in the sun, a moisturiser and sun screen are essential. You will find most Mens skin ranges now offer a face moisturiser with a built in SPF, we thoroughly recommend these as for guys it really is one less thing to think about.
You will however need to use an SPF cream/spray for your body and a moisturiser/after sun after you have been in it. They do very different things and it is unusual to find a two in one, a sun cream does as it says really and a body moisturiser will prolong your tan by keeping the skin supple and younger looking after drying it out in the sun all day. All that’s left now is to enjoy the feeling of a great tan and feel smug that your body looks the best on the beach without damaging it in the process! Bespo’ke male grooming offer all the above treatments and products from Dermalogica and Beau Bronze in a discreet, professional and funky atmosphere, feel free to contact us for help and advice from our team of experts. www.bespokemalegroomingcompany.com info@bespokemalegroomingcompany.com Tel. 01179277127

FX SALON PROFILE T
his very well locally and nationally known, revered and established Bristol salon, founded by Shaun, can be found on St Augustines Place, in Bristol’s bustling city centre, just around the corner from the Hippodrome and the newly refurbished Colston Hall. Easy to find and handy for many city workers, and with easy parking facilities for clients travelling from further a field.
At first an unassuming, but slick shop front, but step inside and clients are greeted with an amazing, non-intimidating warmth and a sense of calm enthusiasm. The staff really wants their clients to relax and feel at home as well as feeling that they will be pampered and sent out looking fabulous. I was! Totally devoted to the outcome and satisfaction of the customer, this is an exceptional salon, as all its existing customers will testify to, including Carol Vorderman and Justin Lee Collins which certainly speaks volumes.

Shaun and Mark have a devoted client base and relish the expectation of new clients and new challenges. There are two senior stylists and one junior, and a senior colourist. I asked for the precise hair cut and colour that I had in mind and MFX went out their way to listen and carry out these requests. I was treated to a consultation from colourist Sarah with Mark and Shaun the senior designers, and then a head of semi permanent all over colour with two colours of lowlights. Their favoured product is Phytologie, as it uses natural ingredients and provides a wonderful shine, which they will be pleased to provide delails of upon request. For the colouring, Wella products are used, and again give a fantastic shine and conditioning effect. For clients who want their hair a little longer, MFX use Great Lengths extensions to fabulous effect. Shaun, along with one of his long standing clients, and now friends, is a very active fund raiser for a children’s charity in Uganda and has raised thousands for their cause. The salon is contemporary, yet relaxing, with big mirrors and plush reception seating - great interior design. In all, I had a wonderful experience at Maximum FX, fab staff and designers who had a natural rapport with the customers, a number of whom have been faithful to this locally iconic Bristol salon for many years. 3 SAINT AUGUSTINE’S PLACE BRISTOL BS1 4UD TEL. 0117 923 0231 Words: Anna Moultrie

COPING WITH STRESS
SIMONE CROCKER HEALTH, FITNESS & TREATMENT PROFESSIONAL WWW.FITLOGIC.CO.UK
COPING WITH STRESS BEGINS WITH BREATH.
BECOME AWARE. Yes. It does. Just sit now for 30 seconds and breathe. Ok. Now reflect on your breath. How did it feel? Shallow? Deep? Was it noisy, through the nose, or mouth? Where did the breath go – into your chest or your abdomen? Could you feel your heart? Did you fidget? Can you even be ‘‘arsed’’? Now breath again. Sit up taller, and inhale. Fill up your lungs and let your stomach go out with the inhale, so you diaphragm can descend. Extend your breath making it longer. Savour it. Yogi’s for centuries believe that we are granted with a limited number of breaths and that extending the breath helps longevity. They were into something. SURELY ITS NOT THAT HARD? Unconscious breath is the single most basic function our bodies perform. It’s the autonomy of breath that allows us to stay alive whilst we go to sleep and run extremely fast and all states in between. Effectively the autonomy of breath allows us to divert our attention to anything and everything else we are doing and remain supplied with the gasses we need. The quality of our unconscious breath is based on a multitude of variables: physical condition, disease, age, weight, etc. Some people develop bad habits of breathing because of anxiety or illness that changes the biomechanics of breath. When we’re stressed out we typically breathe more shallow and this contributes to so much tension and pain. The natural way to breathe, which we all do as babies, is to breathe diaphragmatically, whereby the diaphragm contracts and relaxes to allow the lungs to inflate and deflate fully thereby causing the abdomen to rise and fall. Your shoulders should only get involved during the last stages of inspiration. We develop bad habits through unconsciously allowing our breathing to be uncontrolled and to dominate our physiology negatively. Many people breathe shallow, harshly, quickly, noisily, and essentially although they are still supplying their bodies with adequate gasses to stay alive, their bodies will be in a state of anxiety. Utilizing the upper muscles of the chest during a shallow breath repeatedly can create

muscular dysfunction and excessive tension in the shoulders, foreshortening of shoulder muscles and lead to headaches. HOW CAN I WORK ON MY BREATHING AND FEEL MORE ALERT. BOOST MY IMMUNE SYSTEM AND SLEEP LIKE A WEE BAIRN? By repeating good breathing practice daily we can consciously change our breathing rate, how deeply we breathe, how much oxygen saturation our blood has. By making breath a cerebral activity we can condition our bodies to use and engage the most efficient muscles possible to get gas in and out without creating dysfunction or pain. Conscious breathing is simply when we think about breath, concentrate on it and make it a decisive activity. Begin with lying down. Place one hand on your stomach and one on your chest. Fill up your lungs from the base, allowing your lower hand to rise as your tummy gets pushed out. Fill up the rest of your lungs working up to the ribs the let your shoulders rise with only the last portion of breath. Repeat. Let thoughts drift in your mind then out again, thinking only of your breath. Feel calm. Do this for a few minutes each day or just before bed. It will help your parasympathetic nervous system kick in, helping immunity, repair and aid restful sleep. WHY SHOULD I BOTHER? Ultimately the ability to control breath allows for good posture, consistent platelet saturation of carbon dioxide, less residual tension in the body, and more awareness of our physical selves. The more aware we can become of our body the more we can learn to control our mind and our interaction with everything. Quite simply we have all become too busy to notice just how wired we all are. People are having the screaming abdabs about feck all and a little quite time could do wonders for us. Patanjali says ‘When you go further into yoga, there comes a time when you must have some control so you can dive deeper into yourself…by concentrating on the breath, one can still the mind, develop one-pointedness, and gain deeper entry into the realms of the mind and consciousness.’ For those of you who don’t know who Patanjali is don’t worry. Just know the guy was talking sense.
A NEW WEIGHT PROGRAMME Have you ever felt you need a little bit more support to reach your goal? Did you know that managing your weight is not just about diet and exercise?
Nuffield Health has introduced a new weight programme available now at Bristol Fitness & Wellbeing Centre. It is a 9 month programme with one to one consultations with a physiologist and individually tailored healthy eating plans and exercise regimes to suit your particular lifestyle. Dr Sarah Dauncey (MB BS MRCGP), Medical Director at Nuffield Health, explained why this programme is different from everything else in the market: “Weight management plays an important part in staying healthy and feeling well. Traditionally, attempts to reduce weight have been focused on reduction in calories and fat intake. However, evidence suggests that most people who attempt to lose weight this way regain 90% of it within 5
years. What is more, most recent studies have shown that, in addition to calorie and fat intake balance, other factors play a significant part in the success of weight management: we understand that we need to look at the whole person, not just the weight, to be truly effective. Taking this current evidence into account, Nuffield Health has designed this programme to be different from the one-size-fits-all solutions you may be aware of. The programme will provide you with expert and personal dietary advice and an individual approach to your lifestyle and understanding of nutrition including your stress, sleep and activity levels as well as your psychological relationship with food. Our 1-2-1 sessions will give you the support you need to lose weight - what’s more it will give you the tools to manage your weight and keep it off for good”.
If you need more information about Nuffield Health’s Weight Management Programme call 01179 252 538, go to www. nuffieldhealth.com/weightprogramme or visit the Bristol Fitness & Wellbeing Centre at Pavillion, Queens Road, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 1QS.

oving on from last month’s issue on the press up, it’s time to cover the squat and some of my favourite variations to add into your usual workout routine. The squat is without doubt, the single most important and fundamental leg exercise there is.
1. BACK SQUAT Get yourself into a stable position with the bar rested across the thick part of your upper back, lift out of the rack and take a couple of steps back. Stand with feet at shoulder width and keep your chest and head up to maintain good posture. Flex at the knees and hips and squat down till your thighs are parallel to the ground. Now push up through your feet back to your original position.

2. FRONT SQUAT When performing a front squat the bar is placed across the front of your shoulders. Those with good wrist flexibility grasp the bar and allow the fingers to bend back towards the body for support. Many people (myself included) lack this flexibility. Therefore the alternate method of crossing the arms and then lifting them to support the bar is used. With the bar in position squat down till thighs are parallel to the ground, pause, and then push up through the feet, keeping chest up in order to maintain a neutral spine throughout.
3. SQUAT JUMP Get yourself into the standard squat position, drop down to parallel and explode upward off the floor, land softly back into the squat position and repeat. This variation is great for improving the body’s ability to recruit fast twitch muscle fibres, these fibres are used for short, powerful, explosive movements.

4. SINGLE LEG BENCH SQUATS
5. BOSU SQUATS
A great way to challenge not only the strength of your leg muscles but also their balance and stability is to do single leg work. Single leg bench squats are a great way to start performing single leg squats as the bench gives you a support to sit down onto in case you are unable to complete a repetition.
Another fantastic way of challenging your balance and core stability, this exercise will not only involve the bigger primary muscle groups but will also activate and utilise all the smaller stabiliser muscles. The movement is the exact same movement as a standard squat, only difference is that your stood on the Bosu ball.
Start in a seated position on the edge of the bench with one leg straight out in front of you and your arms extended outward to assist your balance. Then whilst maintaining a neutral spine, by keeping the head and chest lifted, stand up on to the one leg, pause, and proceed to lower yourself slowly back down to your original position.
Hope you enjoy a few new variations to the standard squat and they give you the variety to keep you all motivated toward your summer body goals.... CHARLIE WALKER Personal Trainer – David Lloyd Westbury Mobile: 07595 326 311

WORLD CUP BY BILLY HOLMES
WORLD CUP INSIGHT S
o the World Cup is only 3 weeks away and England are possibly 9 weeks from going down in history as legends, or 6 or so weeks from crashing out as over rated, over hyped Prima Donnas who would rather wear their heart on their sleeve for the respective clubs than for The Three Lions. The hype is building though and you cant go far without seeing a St Georges Cross waving in the wind or some corporate offer like a TV for free if we win. The multi-billion pound football juggernaut is up and running and the adverts and gimmicks are coming thick and fast so you can’t but help buy into it and get caught up in world cup viva whether your a footie fan or not. Personally, I am rather cynical about this aspect of the beautiful game, however, I do love the adverts that come out, like the Carlsberg team talk with Jeff Stirling bare chested sporting a St Georges Cross going mental, or the 5 minute Nike ad featuring a ridiculous cast of footballing and non footballing superstars. I’m looking forward to the Adidas reply to this, as no doubt they have a similar star studded advert to come too. Now to move away from the parasitic brands looking to sap you of all hard earned cash by getting behind your team and ‘truly’ support them, let’s look at the favourites. Bookies have Spain down as faves’ at 4-1, with Brazil at 5-1 and England third favourites at 7-1. Spain are without doubt the most talented team assembled since the France squad that dominated world of football at the turn of the century. Throughout their squad they ooze class, technical ability and belief. Pepe Reina can only look on from the bench as Casillas is their No 1. in defense they have the powerful and skillful Ramos and Puyol, although I’m not the biggest fan of Capdevila. However, their midfield and attack is just ridiculous. Like Reina in goal, Fabregas and Alonso have to battle it out against the likes of Senna, Iniesta, Xavi and Silva, with another slight but highly technical player in Cazorla waiting in the wings too. On top of that they have a few hugely talented young players like Pedro and Navas, who whatever they lack in athletism, they more than make up for it with their ability at keeping the ball. And up front, in my opinion, the two most dangerous strikers in world football; Fernando Torres who has electric pace, physical strength and

can beat two players in one swift move, and the smaller, yet equally as deadly goal machine David Villa, who if he was a 14th century archer could probably out do William Tell and fire two bows, whilst simultaneously standing on his head facing backwards and still hit the hit the apple. Brazil will always be dangerous too, although where as before they always seemed to have unlimited resources in attack, their strength may well lie in their defense with Juilo Ceasar in goal and up front Lucio and Thiago Silva, protected by the hulking presence of Felipe Melo. England should have a decent tournament and I do believe are rightly one of the favourites after a nearly floorless qualifying campaign. I have great faith in Fabio Capello but cannot quite see his obsession with Gareth Barry, Emile Heskey and Steven Gerrard. Barry is unbelievably one sided and hugely immobile, much like Heskey who’d I hope Crouch is given the nod ahead. Gerrard has never replicated his league form for England, and whilst has less of a free role for England, I would have Lampard ahead of him and go for a straight 4-4-2. Injury free, my England team would be, Hart, Johnson, Terry, Ferdinand, Cole, King, Lampard, Cole, Lennon, Crouch and Rooney. Joe Cole is the most un-English Englishman in our squad, in the sense he has fantastic dribbling ability and can conjure up something out of nothing, and surely must be utilised even if Carlo Ancellotti has under used him this season. But at least Capello got one selection right, no more Gary Neville... hip hip HORAY!
As for outsiders, I think Pele is still 50 years off his prediction of an African team winning the world cup, therefore I’d go for Portugal, with the likes of Carvalho, Deco Simao Ronaldo and Nani, they could be a team to do it. And of course Argentina do have Messi, Tevez and Aguero, but what was Maradonna thinking not taking Cambiaso and Zanetti?! But other than Spain, no other team really stands out. Although, you can never write off the Germans, and Holland have some fantastic talent too along with France and the Italians who are well versed at winning big tournaments. Stay tuned for another update further into the tournament, and if Heskey Barry and Gerrard spearhead us into an eagerly anticipated quarter finals then I’ll eat my words and talk about a completely different subject. Perhaps what culinary delights Capello has our players dieting on for example, sounds fun!

FILM REVIEWS
LITTLE SCREEN DAYBREAKERS
Starring Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe, Daybreakers is a film set a decade from now in which vampires outnumber humans. While the vampires plot a way to survive once the humans have all gone a researcher and a small band of ‘good willed’ vamps find a way to save the human race. The idea of this film is brilliant. Turning a genre around to show vampires as the dominant race this film could have been fantastic. But it really isn’t. The twist (which in case, even after this you do still want to watch it, I won’t reveal) of how vampires can become cured is, while again an unconventional idea, awful. I sat watching it pulling the sort of face that clearly depicts ‘sorry but what is going on?’ Not only is the film a big disappointment, but Dafoe, who I always consider a reasonable actor of a certain age decided to play his character as a weird teenager boy, it was just disturbing to watch. This is the kind of film I don’t know where to place. I feel like it should be good for vampire lovers, but, like the Twilight saga there are too many things that are not ‘right’ with it (glittery vamps in Twilight anyone?) And for anyone else the film leaves no impact other than maybe that of confusion and disappointment. Watch it to break up your day if your bored. But only really bored.
THE WOLFMAN The classic story of a man who turns into a werewolf, this film See’s Benicio Del Toro return home to England only to be bitten by a wolf and subsequently cursed to be a wolfman. It also stars Emily Blunt, and Anthony Hopkins. What I’m about to state I know many people will disagree with, I really enjoyed this film. I was looking forward to it from the trailer and I will admit that when I first started watching it, it wasn’t what I was expecting. I was expecting, especially with such a cast, something intelligent and dark. What I got was, over the top, camp, sometimes brutal B movie madness. And for that I adored it. I think many people, like me initially, took
EYEZINE.CO.UK
this film the wrong way. Don’t take it so seriously, laugh at Blunt’s absolutely shocking acting, it’s honestly like she can’t be bothered for the first half of the film, be shocked at how gory some of the deaths caused by the werewolf are, chuckle at the cheesy build up and subsequent ending. This is the perfect film for a mindless Saturday night in, get your friends, get more popcorn than your body can handle and enjoy it for what it is. This is not an intelligent or serious piece of art. It’s a film. And it’s pretty good fun. For drinking game fun, drink every time Emily Blunt acts like she can’t be ‘arsed’.
SHERLOCK HOLMES Guy Ritchie may not be the first person you think of when you think about a remake of a classic story but his take on the very English tale is brilliant. Full of things all things Ritchie, (I am indeed talking about slow motion fighting) the film, starring Robert Downy Jr, Jude Law and Rachel McAdams, has something for everyone, male and female. Boys will love the action and Ritchie’s laddish take on things, girls will want Mcadam’s retro cool outfits and not be disappointed with the amount of topless Downy Jr action you get. It’s fun from beginning to end, I’m not saying it’s perfect, by any stretch of the imagination it is flawed and incredibly daft. But that, coupled with how much ‘buddy’ chemistry Downy Jr and Law have, is what makes it so like able. I think a sequel might, for a change, be actually better than the original, but until that is written and in production for me to get excited about, I’m quite happy to swoon over Downy Jr and spend the rest of my night after watching pretending to be a detective and talking with a ropey cockney accent. Possibly while wearing a slightly jaunty hat to add to the effect. I defy you to not want to solve crime while carrying a cane afterwards.
JODY WISTERNOFF The last month has been amazing, everybody picking their summer festival destinations, buying clothes for summer and thinking about going abroad to destinations new. I on the other hand have been enjoying some quality mixes from some very close friends of mine and sipping continental beers whiles wearing rose tinted sunglasses. Not that the real world is daunting, but it’s my way of taking a holiday. Currently I’m taking a break from the radio show I present to collect my thoughts and write more music and do the thing I love most….. Sleeping…. Err….. I mean Djing. I’ll be travelling to the big smoke to interview a real good friend of mine from Chicago. In turn I will be spinnin’ some tunes on her radio show and spouting nonsense about myself also. This month I’ve managed do drag Jody Wisternoff, a good friend of mine and one half of Bristol progressive house innovators Way Out West out for a beer and a chat…
Renny Constantine: How’s it going mate and what have you been up to recently? Jody Wisternoff: It’s good mate, thanks for dragging me out for a beer. Well on the weekend that’s just past, I’ve been to Poland on the Saturday and Hungary on the Sunday for a couple of little gigs. It always feels a bit naughty but nice playing on a Sunday though as to most it’s a day of rest. You shouldn’t be playing disco on the day of rest. I was good, but it think I may have drank to much Polinka. I’m paying the price today. RC: So what are you up to for the next couple of weeks? J W: I’m playing in Turkey next weekend and that may be quite alcohol laden as well. The thing is that half of the job is playing the right music in the right order and getting the mixes together and the other half is socialising with the promoters and having a good time. RC: So it’s full time socialising? JW: Completely. You’ve got a much higher chance of getting a repeat booking, which it’s what its all about really. You don’t want to slowly banning yourself from clubs around the world. That is not the way to do it. RC: Tell us a bit about yourself and how Way Out West (WOW) was formed… JW: That was way back in 1992-93, I don’t think my balls had dropped! I was about 20 and my dad recommended that Nick (Warren) and I have a session together because he was quite well known as a dj at the time and his social circles included people like Pete Tong and Danny Rampling, A completely different league of djs. I was like “yeah, interesting`”, It just so happened that Nick and I got on so well and had some really hot ideas. The first studio session we didn’t clash at all. Other times I tried a collaboration, it was always a clash of egos and trying to out do each outer as I’d be the same age as the guys I tried to work with. Then 17 years later here we are. RC: So it’s a good friendship and well as being professional? JW: Yeah, and because there was such a gap between out ages, there was a mutual respect for each other. RC: So where did you guys meet? JW: In the Blue Oyster bar……. I had a carnation in my hair! Ha ha, Nah, in record shop called Tonys on park street . I used to Cont... go there and buy hip hop dressed up b-boy style.

MUSIC: JODY WISTERNOFF
RC: what made you stop buying hip hop? JW: I realised that I would never become LL Cool J, I wasn’t destined for greatness in the hip hop world. I put out a record when I was 16 with Smith and Mighty, they were the original Bristol sound so It really helped my brother and I get out there. I owe them a lot. They gave us an advance to get some equipment. I was as school taking my A levels and suddenly there was this cheque with an x amount of money. I was amazing to be given that sort of opportunity when I was a kid. That really made me think about taking a risk and stopping my higher level education. Imagine having a mixing desk and a sampler and effects unit at a young age, I was like “oh my god” As I was from a poor family and didn’t have much money, to have a mini studio at that age was great. RC: I know you use a variety of software to produce/dj with, What can you tell me what modern technology you use? JW: I thing there’s incredible stuff happening with software and the fact that processors are getting so fast at the moment. The new Macbook pros and the new Macs have power that is ridiculous. It gives you more options to be creative. You can have 20 Omni spheres up there, you can have an bunch of soft synths, you can have 15 trillion as opposed to 2 or 3 trillion without it crashing. It makes writing music so much more enjoyable. Back in the day I was using an Atari ST, samplers and before that I didn’t even use a computer. It was all about hardware sequencers like the Roland MC-500, Proper old school kit. I’m still really into old synths and my studio is full of them. You have to mix the old with the new, the best of both worlds. RC: Nick (Warren) and yourself have just released a new album (we love machine), can you tell us more about it? JW: it’s just been re-released with a bunch of tracks remixed by various other producers. It’s just a cover of different angles and caters for djs who wouldn’t normally play the original versions. That’s what the purpose of the album is. Most of the album is harder than what I usually like but it appeals to the big room kind of thing, a bit more techno-ish. Some of it is progressive but it covers all angles. Now the album is out of the way its time for me to get a single out before august so I’m in good standing for the DJ magazine top 100.
EYEZINE.CO.UK
RC: What are the key things you implement when you’re creating a track? JW: Try to get a little bit of magic, something special about it… the X factor. I thing that’s the kind of idea as there is so much mundane stuff that is ok but doesn’t really stick out and I’d play for a couple of weeks and there are others they I will always play. The track has to make you feel some thing. Something that you’ll remember in 10 years time. RC: What was the first record you bought? JW: Sex Pistols – friggin’ in the riggin’ RC: So how is the house scene in your eyes at the moment? JW: When it comes to making records It’s hard to sell music to people as everyone can get it for free. As soon as there’s a hot new track, it’s uploaded to some site. I don’t even think about sales any more. I just make music to maintain my profile and reputation and gigs basically. That’s what making records is about nowadays. 10 years ago you’d tour to sell but now you make music to tour…. I blame that on Stuart Wilkinson…. Ha ha ha! RC: Funniest thing that ever happened at an event/gig? JW: Well back in 97 in Glastonbury there was an incident where the crap was pumped back into the dance tent before we were about to go on……. I was wearing white linen, it was awful and smelly but looking back it was funny. RC: What do you do outside of the dance music scene? JW: Family vibes really, that’s it. I’m fortunate not to have a 9 to 5, have my week free so I spend a lot of my time with my daughter and It’s easy to pop upstairs from the studio when I need to chill. RC: Knight Rider or A-team? JW: I wasn’t allowed to watch either, I was from a hippy-ish alternative family and my dad viewed them as middle of the road. I was allowed to watch things hike horror films an more adult orientated programs. Going to school the next day would be interesting… I hope you enjoyed the months article! DJ SQUIRE DIZZEE RASCAL FT CHASE N STATUS - HEAVY
FINALLY!.. Not saying Dizzee hasn’t been making huge tracks but when Chase n Status have anything to do with the track its going to be what the track is titled, HEAVY!..This is a huge collaboration now facing it’s official release, as it will be one of the 10 new tracks that will be added to the second disc of the re-release of Dizzee’s latest album “Tongue N’ Cheek” with “Dirtee Deluxe Edition” added to the title, which drops the 31st of May. With this track you feel the old school Dizzee is back. He’s undoubtedly still the best UK MC being lyrically quick, hard and answer back to all those who doubted him becoming sold out to underground.... How dare people even think such a thing! The bonus addition, Chase n status adding their dirtee bass kick to the track which leads into the popular dubstep scene which is growing genre entering the main stream scene. This is going to be played everywhere so be prepared.
CHRIS BROWN FT TYGA (YOUNG MONEY) - HOLLA AT ME You’ve got to give it to the kid.. You are not knocking him away from his dream to be No.1 on the RnB scene but this track answers more to the Hip hop side! Chris Brizzie expresses his other talents by spitting bars & I admit he’s got skills. A lot of people not feeling it though and lets be honest, in comparison to artist like Drake…he doesn’t even touch his shadow.. But its an up-tempo club beat and a grower me . Not the first time this guys have worked together so you will see a lot more collaborations on their duo mix tape ‘ fan of a fan’ coming out soon. Guess the world has opened out a new bad boy and he’s make him self heard. The track is produced by Jungle beats… and dj’s will be breaking this out in the clubs ‘fa shizzie’

N.E.R.D FT NELLY FURTADO HOT ‘N’ FUN Dam, can say we heard anything from N.E.R.D. since 2008’s that’s all set to change with the impending release of their 2010 album ‘Nothing’. Pharrell, Chad and Shay are shaping up and making this track to be one for the summer. Written by ChiTown Its hypnotic, bass-driven groove sure to get bodies moving pulses in the background as Pharrell proclaims “It’s a new day: people don’t want to think no more, they just want to feel. They want to let go.” Tied together with a melodic hook featuring Nelly Furtado, but im not sure if she was required as there are rumours N.E.R.D of a new vocalist called RHEA to the group (BEP pops into mind). Anyway, this track sounds like it just might be a smash-hit in the making – what do you think? Unofficial release date for album ‘Nothing’ this month.
DENNIS FERRER - HEY HEY Everyone and I mean everyone should of heard this Deep soulful house track a while ago (2009 to be honest) but its now somehow climbing back up the music world very quickly and seems the outside world is finally taking notice .This New York Dj & producer has made a huge appearance in the house world we know today and I Kid you not this will be the summer track of 2010 for those beach moments and with such a great hook, sung by the leading lady of the Nosiettes’, Shoniwa. It will be an Anthem classic that will never die and already has become an International DJ essential, getting the same reaction everywhere from the true house followers. Its on review as the Official release has be stamped and on the Defected Label 13th June. Im an urban fan but I seriously love this and hope Dennis does really well from it.

Oceana is located just off Millennium Square, just on the Waterfront. On entering you realise the size of the venue. As you enter, the first bar on your right is an area to get the night going and it’s normally a good place to meet friends. Altogether Oceana boasts seven themed rooms, such as the Aspen Ski Lodge complete with wood furniture, the New York Disco with a funky backlit dance floor and the Parisian Boudoir EYEZINE.CO.UK
with velvet curtains and intimate booths. Each of the themed rooms has its own bar making getting a drink an extremely easy prospect. We checked it out on a busy Friday night. Packed full of screaming girls and buff guys, all up for a good night. It’s remarkable how while Oceana is so large it can still feel so intimate. It made for a pretty good atmosphere all round. Keep your eyes peeled for events from Oceana. It’s been a while since we’ve made it down to Oceana, but it is still a reliable night out that delivers entertainment and value.

Support the Portishead Pool and take a dip, especially with the amazing weather we’ve had recently. But fear not, the pool is enjoyable even on a cold day as it’s fully heated.

ARTS
SECRET WARS
S
ecret Wars hit Bristol once again on Friday 14th, that’s one digit away from being unlucky, so lucky for us. For those that don’t know, the event looks to place street art talent from locations across the globe to draw it out in a city vs. city live art battle. After an amazing - Kanye West endorsed - 2009, 2010 has seen the event advance into it’s 4th year and the Secret Wars Euroleague, where European artists scrap and doodle for their hometown to win their group and progress into the knockout stages. A bit like the World Cup, but only if you squint. Start The Bus played host to the home leg of Bristol vs. Glasgow showdown; a heat where artistic talent is matched with funny accents and local colloquialisms. The rules are simple, as the official site says: • 90 MINS ON THE CLOCK • BLACK PAINT ONLY, ON WHITE WALLS • NO SKETCHES/NO PENCILS • INVISIBLE MIDDLE LINE WITH AN ARTIST EITHER SIDE • GO BIG OR GO HOME So…you get the score. The setting is basically a huge white painted wall, six artists (three on each side) with fat markers and paintbrushes and DJs playing hip-hop and funk. This creates a raw and back to basics feel to the event, like 8 Mile or Fight Club but much. much, much less violent and with pens as mics. The Bristol team featured local heroes Inkie, Sepr and Dylan Shipley while Glasgow brought uhh, three blokes in jeans with pens and a paintpot.
with Sepr and Inkie’s respective disheveled character and swirly haired maidens taking shape within the first five minutes. It looked like it was going to be a marker penned whitewash as team Glasgow had only managed a few small characters by the midway point. During the ninety minutes, the beer flowed and the music pumped on. I returned to action with around twenty minutes to go. Bristol had added some anti-Scotland touched to their piece, but the Glasgow effort was still looking worryingly stark. Amazingly the final minutes of the heat saw Glasgow pull it out of the bag. Within what seemed like minutes, they had drawn all three of the Bristol artists as babies in a pram, some rather rough looking Bristolian extras and an impressive take up of one of Inkie’s women, except with her boob out and stubble, leaning over the pram. The sudden turn around wowed to crowd and took the Bristol three by surprise, as they were strolling around, getting beers and chatting with their mates. Consequently, they added some final touches to try and slag off Glasgow a bit more but the time was up and the scores were to be counted.

After the judges awarded a vote to each side, it was down to the home crowd to scream loudly to ensure that victory was awarded to the South West artists, which we did with flying colours and decibels, making the final score 2-1 to the triple Brizzol entente. That crucial away point for the Glaswegians could be invaluable at the end of the group stages though, so not all was lost for our Scotch pals. F.SIX COLLECTIVE
T
he 2 Degree Gallery sits off the beaten path of Picton st., brimming with the nonchalance of Montpellier and the creative buzz of Stokes Croft. It’s in this quaint, former stable that the F.Six Collective had their debut collective photography exhibition. The F.Six Collective consists of an amalgamation of six young, innovative and contemporary photographers from various visual and regional backgrounds. They are Liza Kenrick, Max McClure, Mike McCabe, Moon Leith, Rebecca Robertson and Zachary Saitoti, the first ever, and certainly not the last, batch of graduates of the spanking new photography degree at the University of the West of England, Bristol. A short recent stay in America influenced Liza Kenrick’s series of work entitled ‘Chicago’. The series consisted of over-exposed, dream-like cityscapes contrary to the common, industrious innercity imagery that we are used to seeing. Kenrick’s photographs contain a faint, delicate palette of colours, a possible reflection of her mood she felt when she was there. The images convey a sense of distant memories. They become painterly; enhanced by the textured paper they are printed on. As a graphic designer turned photographer, Zachary Saitoti’s dramatic and surrealist imagery combines his varied backgrounds and spits out raw, unique, dramatic photography. His body of work comprised of six large black and white facial portraits, displayed side by side like a series of mug shots. Saitoti had taken three men and three women and through digital manipulation had swapped the facial features of the men with those of the women and vice versa. This resulting in series of bizarre and somewhat disturbing set of photographs. Rebecca Robertson’s work focused on the different cultural activities within society. The relationships held within different social circles and also the relationships we hold with one another. Her recent work tries to shed a more positive light on areas of life we often fear, looking into the concerns we have with ageing by engaging with and photographing the elderly. With a combination of quotes from conversations she had with her elderly subjects and vivid photographs of the elderly within their homes, Robertson puts forward a fantastic celebration of getting old entwined with an appreciation for the smaller things in life. Raised in Co. Clare, Ireland, Bristol born Max McClure is not
Mike McCabe
only an accomplished photographer but also lends his hand to creative directing, graphic design and fashion portraiture. His series of abandoned farmhouses and derelict buildings from around the world, all taken in the dead of night in far off secluded places, demonstrated an eerily quiet yet theatrical atmosphere. Moon Leith’s empty frames appeared to be a direct engagement with the viewer, allowing them to individually become the subject of the work. The descriptions of the photographs come from her own memories, with the pronoun subverted to explicitly interact with the audience. The frame become an invitation for the audience to privately superimpose images from their own memories and experiences. This allowed the work to be completely unique for each viewer, while at the same time creating an inclusive experience. She later explained that her ethos with making her work had always come from an emotive and personal place, focused on relationships between people, and people’s relationship with art and the artist. The final member of collective is Michael McCabe, he focused on the concept of the image over its aesthetical qualities, producing challenging work that questions use of man-made space and materials, how they’re used and why. Mike’s images consisted of a variety of portrait photographs of foot wear that had been perfectly cut in half in half. As individuals, the members of F.Six seemed all completely different but all shared a common passion for contemporary photography, producing new and innovative pieces as individuals but bringing them together brilliantly as the collective and that’s what makes it work. They fed creatively off one another and used each other as a support network, critiquing and offering advice on new work, which has clearly helped them to grow as artists and photographers.

COOK WITH US BARBECUED SUMMER FRUITS DRIZZLED WITH CARAMEL • • • • • • • • •
6 ripe plums 250g strawberries Juice of 2 large oranges 2tbsp soft brown sugar 2tsp vanilla extract To serve: 150g 0% fat Greek yogurt 2 tbsp caramel sauce (find with the non-chilled desserts) 50g chopped pistachios
Cut the peaches and plums in half, remove the stone and cut each piece into quarters. Hull and quarter the strawberries. Then tear off 6 squares of foil, large enough to hold the fruit when folded to double thickness. Divide the fruit equally between the folded foil squares and partially bring up the sides to hold in the juices. In a small jug, blend together the orange juice, brown sugar and vanilla extract. Divide the juice between each parcel and loosely seal each one. Cook on the barbecue for 10-12 minutes (this will depend on how hot your barbecue is), but check halfway through the cooking time. The fruit is ready when it softens slightly to the tip of a sharp knife, but without being too soft. Open each parcel, transfer to 6 serving bowls and top with a spoonful of yogurt, a drizzle of caramel sauce and a few chopped pistachios.

NEVEN MAGUIRE’S BROAD BEAN PASTA GRATIN • • • • • • • • • • • •
750g (1lb 10oz) fresh or frozen broad beans 350g (12oz) penne pasta 300ml (11fl oz) dry white wine 300ml (11fl oz) double cream 250ml (9oz) mascarpone cheese 2 egg yolks 2tbsp snipped chives 2tbsp shredded basil leaves 25g (1oz) freshly grated Parmesan cheese 75g (3oz) freshly grated pecorino cheese Salt and freshly ground pepper Mixed salad leaves lightly dressed with French Vinaigrette to serve
You’ll also need: 32 x 18cm (12 1/2 x 7in) ovenproof dish, 5cm (2in) in depth Method Place the broad beans in a saucepan of boiling salted water and cook for 2-3 mins (or about 5 mins if frozen) until just tender. Drain and refresh the beans under cold running water, then slip them out of their skins. Meanwhile, cook the pasta in a large saucepan of boiling salted water for 8-10 mins until al dente (just tender but with a slight bite) or according to the packet instructions. Drain well. Place the white wine in a small saucepan and heat until it has reduced to about 2tbsp. Add the cream and bring to the boil, then season with salt and pepper and turn down the heat. Simmer gently for 6-8 mins until slightly reduced and thickened. Set aside to cool slightly. Fold the broad beans and cream mixture into the cooked penne and tip into an ovenproof dish. Preheat the grill to medium. Beat together the mascarpone cheese, egg yolks, chives and basil in a bowl with the Parmesan and most of the pecorino, reserving a handful to sprinkle on top. Spoon the mascarpone mixture in dollops over the broad beans and penne and spread using a palette knife or the back on a spoon until the pasta is completely covered. Scatter with the reserved pecorino. Place the dish under a grill and cook for about 5 mins until bubbling and lightly golden. Spoon straight from the dish on to warmed plates, with dressed mixed salad leaves if you like. This dish can be prepared several hours in advance and just popped into a preheated oven at 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4 for 25 30 mins until heated through and then flashed under a hot grill until golden and bubbling.

TRIED & TESTED
SEVLOR POINTER K2 KAYAK
I
t’s not everyday you get the chance to take to the open seas and enjoy a day of pottering around the shores of Sandbanks, in Poole, on an inflatable canoe. We had been looking forward to it with all calm sunny days we’ve been having recently. But, on this particular day the wind decided to pick up and unfortunately made difficult conditions for our tried and tested. But never the less, we persevered and packed the car up with the Sevlor Pointer K2 neatly in its box. We’ve not used many kayaks before, but the ones we have used are solid and made from fiber-glass or plastic. It’s a strange, but remarkably neat concept being able to store it in the boot of a car. Once you get the kayak out of its box and onto the ground it took little time and a few pumps on the foot pump to get the canoe looking like, well a canoe. At this point you really get to appreciate the attention to detail and the well thought out storage facilities that are built in. You’d expect the finish to look like that of a lilo and perhaps be a little flexible. But, when inflated properly the kayak is very strong and has a sturdy fabric cover. Getting nto it when it was in the water was a challenge, but at no point did it fell like it was going to capsize. Once you’re in the seats are very comfortable and the collapsable oars are the perfect size. The kayak moves very elegantly across the water and sliced through the waves without any problems. We used the additional spray covers that were provided, and we were pretty glad we did because when broadside to the waves they jumped over the edge a few times. We tested it in comparably extreme conditions, but we can only imagine that kayak handles a river trek or lake with ease. It’s a neat little kayak that offers a lot of fun for a very affordable

price. It is great for camping and exploration as it can hold loads of gear. So if you regularly find yourself at a loose end, why not give these a go - and they are healthy too.
