FESTIVAL UPDATE

OLD DUKE JAZZ FESTIVAL Yes, yes, this awesome spectacle is back. The Old Duke Jazz festival takes place on August Bank holiday and hosts an array of bands, stalls and street entertainment. The Old Duke is situated on King Street in the centre of the City. While an extensive pedestrianised area draws large numbers during the summer the main attraction of the pub is it’s live music. It holds 8 sessions a week, one every night and one on Sunday lunchtimes. The pub is named after the great Jazz pianist, composer and band leader Duke Ellington and has become internationally famous for it’s live Jazz music. In recent years other styles have been added to the traditional jazz so that blues, folk, funk and modern jazz bands can now be seen there across the week. In 2009 the pub was named as one of the key venues in the history of British Jazz, along side Ronnie Scott’s and Buckingham Palace. For the 33rd time the Old Duke Jazz Festival is upon us. Held on the cobbled streets outside The Old Duke public house in Bristol’s Old City it has become one of Bristol’s main music events. Over the three days of the August Bank Holiday the pub plays host to numerous food and clothing stalls, street entertainment and 15 bands. The bands are often regulars within The Old Duke itself and range from Traditional Jazz, for which the pub is famous, to Blues and Modern Jazz Funk. Over the years numerous greats have graced the stage including the legendary Acker Bilk and new talents such as Beth Rowley and Pete Roe. Oh yeah, best of all, it’s free!

HAIR SERVICE

Trevor and Russell

‘My New Hair’, a national network set up by over 30 professional hairdressers including Mark Hill, Charles Worthington, Andrew Collinge and Trevor Sorbie has someone new onboard. Local hairdresser Russell Lambard received intensive direction on working with and fitting wigs for clients with Trevor Sorbie himself as well as taking part in a communications workshop lead by cancer nurses from the Communication Equation Ltd, as part of his training at the L’Oreal Professional head quarters in London for ‘My New Hair’, which offers service throughout the country to patients who are suffering from medical hair loss. Having experienced the misery of cancer in his own family with his grandfather currently going through chemotherapy, it gave him the incentive to join the group and make a difference. The organisation by Trevor Sorbie aims to contribute towards some significant ‘psychological medicine’ for a person experiencing hair loss. A client can expect a respectful, SEND US YOUR ARTICLE - WWW.EYEZINE.CO.UK/CLIENTZONE/

compassionate and professional consultation, tailored to their individual need thanks to thorough training in communication skills between stylist and client. Trevor aims to train at least 400 hairdressers over the next two years to deliver the service in salons and healthcare environments.

my Willerton has previously been involved with and modelled in, numerous Bristol and Bath fashion shows and aspires to be Miss England 2010. The professionally choreographed show will showcase both local designers and high street brands and will include entertainment from Bristol’s home grown talent and even surprise guests. Amy chose a charity close to her heart, The Variety Club, as her younger brother suffers from a rare chromosomal disorder and severe autism. The show is set to be one of the most eagerly awaited and exciting events of the summer thanks to both Amy and Tyrone who has previously worked as Head of Brand and Marketing in the national hair and beauty media and has links with many of the country’s top fashion labels and celebrity names. Aside from the event being one of entertainment, Amy aspires to demonstrate that Bristol has creative talent that can match that found in London whilst making it affordable and accessible. She said, “Working with each brand, we will create a theme and feel of what has inspired the designs and attempt to capture the essence of this in the show. I

We’ve been delighted at how many companies and local personalities have jumped at the change to support such a great cause.” Make sure you don’t miss the Bristol Rockstyle on Thursday 19th August at 31 Corn Street by snapping up tickets from the Bristol Ticket Shop. SUNSHINE IN MODERATION CAN BOOST YOUR HEALTH

G

wyneth Paltrow has been in the news lately because doctors have advised her to get more sun. The actress had been taking old fashioned advice to stay out of the sun and as a result she became severely deficient in Vitamin D and was diagnosed with early onset Osteoporosis.

As with most things in life, almost everything in moderation has a benefit. Experts are increasingly realising that sunlight is critical for health, and rumour has it that cancer charities are revising current guidelines on sun exposure at the moment. The best way to boost Vitamin D is through a few minutes, sunscreen-free exposure to the sun every day. And when you can’t get outside or the sun isn’t shining, using a sunbed can be a useful alternative. What is critical for good health is that you never burn your skin. If you choose a few minutes on a sunbed to boost your tan and feel better, then at Consol Suncenter, which is the UK’s leading

tanning business, you will find all the advice you need about your skin type and how to tan sensibly. Consol’s sunbeds are the most sophisticated on the market and use technology that minimises any risk of burning while you tan. With so much scaremongering it’s easy to believe that you must stay pale and avoid sunbeds. But as experts are beginning to admit, moderate tanning is good for you. SARAH SMITH T

his month, dozens of hot air balloons with take over the sky across Bristol for the annual Balloon fiesta. It’s one of the city’s biggest events and attracts hundreds of people every year. From the novelty, such as Bertie Bassett to the magnificent ‘Nightglow’, it’s not to be missed.

Local designer, Sarah Smith has taken this interest one step further and into the fashion industry. “How can balloons have anything to do with fashion?” I hear you ask. Siobhan Fagan finds out. Sarah uses both the shape, feel and appearance of a balloon as inspiration for her designs which represent them visually in an obvious way with the use of a round, inflated shape, as well as on a more subtle way by simply using the lightweight fabric which by itself, looks dramatic and almost theatrical whilst floating elegantly. Sarah, a fashion student based in Bristol, was recently involved in the Hobbs Show at the Colston Hall where she designed and produced a collection of dresses made from this fabric, generously donated by Cameron Balloons, and showcased them on the catwalk to an impressed audience. Having completed two years at the University of the West of England, specialising in Fashion Design, she will be completing her final year as of September. Alongside the Hobbs Show, she has taken part in the ‘Fairwear’ fashion show held at Bristol Cathedral for the past two years for which she designed a collection using Fairtrade cotton that was exciting and innovative, proving Fairtrade can be anything but boring. Having asked Sarah about her unique balloon inspired collection, she said, “As a fashion student, we are constantly encouraged to engage and develop with our own personal style. So the collection of ‘balloon’ dresses really pushed my boundaries and is something that encouraged me to gather inspiration from areas that I have not been familiar with and this really allowed me to be fully creative with no real limits or margins.

“I think that this collection successfully demonstrates that fashion can be everywhere and can be really anything at all. My usual style is more modern classic, wearable garments with an edge or unusual twist and with a real concentration on detail and fabrics. So this project was an intriguing challenge that really opened my eyes and allowed me to generate ideas and new areas for exploration.” This collection is certainly different to anything that’s in the industry at the moment but it’s refreshing and impressive. Sarah has taken inspiration from something that’s normally seen as an attraction, something we look at in awe but it works. The dresses aren’t all inflated and balloon shaped, some are more wearable and simply made from the fabric, hanging off the figure and moving elegantly like a glamorous evening dress. Keep your eyes peeled for more from this innovative designer and don’t forget to check out the balloon fiesta from Thursday 12th until Sunday 15th August.

NEW SALON

SEAN HANNA I

am lucky enough to have had the opportunity to be pampered at leading Bristol salon Sean Hanna recently. I’ve visited a lot of salons in the lifetime of my ‘barmy barnet’– both good & bad and this was clear from the outset that Sean Hanna was one of the great ones.

Sean Hanna, centrally located in Cabot Circus’s Quakers Friars, and nestled in what’s fast becoming the most exclusive corner of this Bristol shopping Mecca, is modern and fresh. The interior is fantastic with its black & grey, red tones , huge mirrors and luxurious leather chairs. It can almost pass off as a nightclub (minus sticky carpets and stale beer) – it’s the kind of place that just oozes modern style and you can easily loose yourself for a good 3/4 hours of a day in its relaxing ambience. I was met by the owner Adam Vincent. He made feel very welcome & comfortable as I was seated and then looked after by one of the top Stylist. She helped me choose some warm darker shades. I have been platinum blonde for as long as I can remember, so I feel I am in the best possible hands for this dramatic transformation. I would trust just anyone with this hairy responsibility. I am recommended upon what suits me best and I am happy with the advice and colour. I was given hot towels, water & wine throughout the afternoon – pure heavenly pampering. It’s clear to see this is not just any run of the mill salon - Sean Hanna really go out of their way to make you feel special.

EYEZINE.CO.UK

When I taken over to the wash basin I was really taken back by the mood lighting, massage chairs and music speakers – it was by far one of the most enjoyable experience I’ve ever had in a hair salon It was so relaxing, I almost dropped off – beware! The whole of the Sean Hanna team were great and they all really seem happy and truly enjoying their work, which makes for an all over fantastic experience. Once word really gets out about Sean Hanna, then getting an appointment will no doubt become more and more exclusive - with the long awaited Covent Garden Sanctuary Spa opening up over the way in a few months time, with Raymond Blancs restaurant directly opposite and Harvey Nics presiding over them all , then this little slice of Bristolian luxury is going to be the place to be – I’m just glad I got to experience it first! A woman’s cut and finish at Sean Hanna starts at £40, and a man’s at £30. Highlights start at £80, but if you’re bored of them, why not try or break your style fatigue with inspiration from Sean Hanna’s signature cuts – definitely worth checking out the latest Vintage collection. Recommended hair treatments from Kerastase (from £12) are a must for the sad and lifeless mops. Students can bag up to 20% on selected weekdays, and kids can make up to a 50% saving, depending on their age. If its products you’re after, then the salon’s haircare range of GHD, Tigi (including Bed Head) and Kerastase should hit the mark. A staggered discount loyalty card is also available to ease those big spending worries. One of Sean Hanna’s best assets was their genuine appreciation of what I wanted and how I would manage it and three hours, two teas, two Technowashes and one head massage later, and I have celebrity worthy hair - Soft, nourished, positively bouncing with colour and I’m worth it! Stylish, professional and dripping with effortless cool, Sean Hanna was the place for me to start my hair affair. If you want to experience one of the best haircuts, haircolours and hairstyles in Bristol, this is the place for you. Sean Hanna 13 Quakers Friars Square, Cabot Circus,Bristol. WELLBEING

THE CLIFTON LIDO, SPA & POOL Far away from the madding crowd, or so you would think, we have the benefit of a stunning oasis in our metropolis. Re-opened in November 2008, Clifton Lido provides a sanctuary, retreat and haven for those who seek it. Not really that difficult considering it’s slap bang in the middle of Clifton. Originally built in 1859 and after much debate and deliberation and many years of neglect, the Glass Boat Company, a well established restaurant group saved the day and bought the lido to restore it to its full glory. What better excuse to go visit than to celebrate my partner’s birthday. A glorious summer’s day, not a cloud in the sky with the sun shining down on us. A perfect start to the day. We opted for one of the many packages that the Lido offer, which included an afternoon swim, use of the spa facilities, robe and slippers. The lunch menu was impressive to say the least with choices from specialty dishes such as wood roast poussin with St George mushrooms, broad beans and calcot salad through to tapas including houmous, babaganoush and a wide variety of charcuterie. You can have smoked salmon on toast and even cream teas if you so prefer. There is a selection for everyone’s taste. We opted for the lunchtime specials washed down with some chilled

Prosecco. Exquisite. For your further enjoyment, take advantage of the spa and pool or for more ultimate indulgence pick one or two of the exclusive treatments the lido has to offer. Holistic massages are a perfect way to completely unwind. It’s worth noting that you can also visit during your lunch break or between meetings so you don’t have to sign up for a promotion or spa day. With that in mind, there’s no excuse not to get yourself off to the lido for a spot of pampering after all it is only on your doorstep. DOES IT HURT?

I

t is without a doubt the most asked question we receive and the answer goes without saying. Yes, it does hurt!! But ask any woman and she will tell you that beauty is never without some pain but she will also tell you that it is always worth it!

Of course we mean the dreaded waxing and whichever area you choose to smooth there will always be some discomfort involved, there are plenty of ways to minimise it though and the benefits do outweigh the negatives. The best way to minimise the pain is to be regular and consistent with your appointments and never go longer than 6 weeks between them. It pays to do some research and have a good think about where and when you will need to be waxed. Always leave a couple of days between waxing and any sunny holiday or sweaty outdoor pursuits and do not try to get your whole body waxed in one go! We usually advise first time waxers to go for the back area first as this is usually the least hairy and the most painless. Ask for a back, neck and shoulder area and with luck your therapist will blend the upper arms into any hairy lower arms and not leave you with a reverse hairy T-shirt. Following this the chest area is most common, the hair needs to be trimmed down and it usually has a very strong hairgrowth, you make up your mind what this means. If you choose a reputable salon they will advise you on other areas suitable for waxing, of course the most asked about is the back, sack and crack which we prefer to refer to as a boys Brazilian. This treatment is not for the fainthearted but if done with care and precision the results can be rewarding in lots of ways! Most salons offer both hot and warm waxing and the latter will be the most common. Both types should start with a pre wax cleanse to remove dirt, sweat and oil. Warm waxing will then be applied directly to the skin in strips either using a roller system (most preferable) or a spatula.

The wax will then be removed using bonded paper strips and an after wax lotion applied to the whole area to cool the skin. Hot wax is usually reserved for imtimate areas and is applied by spatula, built up into a thicker strip and it is less painfull and slightly kinder to very sensitive skin! You should then be given after waxing skin care advice and asked to refrain from any heat treatments or sun exposure for at least 24 hours. And one final piece of advice, a painkiller half an hour before should help!!!

PULL UPS I

n my opinion the pull up is one of the best tests of true pound for pound strength, and one of the most effective bodyweight exercises for increasing strength and endurance. The main muscles used in all these exercises are the lats, traps, rhomboids and biceps, however, many other core stabilisation muscles play a huge role in performing these. Here are some of my favourite variations to really challenge you...

1. THE WIDE GRIP PULL UP Start by hanging from a bar with your arms straight, just over shoulder width. Make sure you keep your chest up and shoulders pulled back and pull yourself upward. Pull until the top of your chest reaches the bar and your chin is just slightly over, pause, and lower your body back down under control.

SEND US YOUR ARTICLE - WWW.EYEZINE.CO.UK/CLIENTZONE/

2. THE CLOSE GRIP PULL UP In this variation start by hanging from the bar with straight arms and a supinated grip, space your hands just a few inches apart and then pull yourself up. Keep your chest up and shoulders back just as you did in the wide grip variation.

3. THE MUSCLE-UP The muscle-up is done by performing a regular pull up, but as your chest reaches the bar you pull your body up and over the bar into the push section of a dip so that you end up over the bar with your arms straight below you. Use the momentum you gather on the way up to propel you into the second phase of the exercise, if your finding this hard try kicking your legs up to create extra force. This is a very powerful, full body exercise which will increase both strength and power.

4. THE TRIANGLE PULL UP The triangle is a regular wide grip pull up, the difference is that you pull yourself to one side. As you pull yourself upward, move your body across to one side so that when you reach the bar the side of your chin is just above one hand. Lower and then repeat, moving to the other side each repetition.

5. CLOSE GRIP LEG RAISE PULL UP The name gives it away, this is simply a close grip pull up with your legs extended out in front of you. However, this is where the simplicity stops... The exercise is a really challenging core exercise that enlists the help of all the core muscles, especially the abdominals. As you hang at the bottom position of a close grip pull up, contract your abdominals and raise your legs straight out in front of your body. Hold this position and then pull upward. Hope you enjoy these variations and see an improvement in strength and power... CHARLIE WALKER Personal Trainer – David Lloyd Westbury - 07595 326 311

DESIRABLE MOTORING

BENTLEY CONTINENTAL FLYING SPUR SPEED By Tim Barnes-Clay

I

t’s hard enough getting Skoda to lend a press car, let alone a car of this high standing. And yet Skoda and Bentley have something in common – they both use VW-Audi engines. I’m not surprised – the engines are bullet proof – I should know – I am the proud owner of a six year old Audi A4 Avant. But back to the Bentley – what can I say? It is simply a glorious car to sit in, to drive and to have parked outside the house.

The Flying Spur Speed I had on test cost over £171,600 - more than the substantial mortgage I still have on my house. Yet when you lift the hood and look at the vast W12-cylinder six litre twin turbo engine, then open the doors and sniff the hand crafted polished wood and leather, you know that the cost isn’t just about the name – it is in the workmanship of this utterly refined and yet spine tinglingly fast car. Introduced in July 2008 the Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed is probably the world’s fastest unadulterated four-seater. When the foot is down, it is a phenomenally fast and magnificent monster, capable of 200 mph and reaching 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Sophistication is not forfeited for speed, refinement for unrestricted power nor luxury for capability. When you push the ‘start’ button you (and everyone else in the street) immediately notice a very deep bass rumble, reminiscent of the late great Barry White. There is a conventional dual mode selector on the console for fully automatic or manual gear use but there are also column mounted paddles for up and down changes by fingertips. Under gentle acceleration there is no noticeable rise in engine note but it changes to the sound you hear inside a plane when you’re about to take off if you push the pedal to the metal. The 553lbft of torque is colossal and shrugs off the Bentley’s 2,500kg’s as if it was just a featherweight sports car. You have to hang onto the heated hide trimmed steering wheel while the Bentley greedily eats up the tarmac without ever getting out of puff. It is an awesome experience.

EYEZINE.CO.UK

Of course a car which is capable of almost three times the national speed limit has to be balanced with a braking system that can scrub off speed as quickly as possible. The luxury car company didn’t disappoint, equipping my test car with massive carbon ceramic brakes which needed only light pedal pressure to bring about rapid deceleration. Inside, you can adjust the shock absorbers to create a cushioning ride or you can decide to go for a harder sporty feel if you’re after more of a Silverstone race track experience. Of course, supplementary safety has not been forgotten and as well as airbags planted everywhere, the test car came with Bentley Adaptive Cruise Control which uses a long-range radar sensor, mounted in the lower front grille, to monitor the road ahead for other vehicles. When a slower moving vehicle is detected, the system automatically adjusts braking and acceleration to maintain a ‘time gap’, as selected by the driver. Bentley has also teamed up with iconic British hi-fi manufacturer, Naim. Designed exclusively for Bentley and available as a further option for both the Continental Flying Spur and Flying Spur Speed, the Naim system features an 1100 Watt amplifier (the most powerful in a production car) and 15 custom-built speakers. I found I hardly listened to it though – the sweet sound of the six hundred horses and deep creamy burble of the exhaust was music enough for me. Room is plentiful throughout the Bentley. Seats adjust over a good range and the steering column’s electric settings combined with the powered seat movements create any desired position for the driver. Wide opening doors give good access and passengers in the back have copious legroom and headroom while the shape of the seats holds occupants securely and comfortably. And, when it comes to luggage, the boot lid opens to reveal a very decent 475 litres of capacity. There are few cars which can match the Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed. Although a dream for many, owning this beautiful car could be a reality for those who can afford to enjoy the good things in life. And believe me, this is one of them.

MOTORING

VW SCIROCCO R By Tim Barnes-Clay

T

he Volkswagon Scirrocco that I had on test stood out a mile. In a bright, almost neon-cum-metallic green, the colour actually suited this particular potent model.

The ‘R’ – the most potent variant of the Scirocco range - is the sort of car that talks to you. It says: “Look at me, look at me, I’m a powerful car and you can have fun driving me and look cool.” And do you know what? The Scirocco is right. During a VW event at a secret location this Summer, my photographer and I took the bright green beast for its exercise around some narrow, dusty, cornfield-fringed country roads. The first impression I had was of the tremendous ‘woomph’ you feel when you push down hard on the accelerator. But you never feel scared. Or at least I didn’t. The car always felt planted to the road. Its grip was sensational and the brakes awesomely quick in scrubbing off speed.

EYEZINE.CO.UK

The only slight downside to the Scirocco is the interior. Don’t get me wrong, the seats are comfy and they look every bit as sporty as the rest of the car, it’s just that the dash plastics look a little cheap to me. But perhaps that’s just me being picky. After parking up to take some pictures of the Scirocco R, my snapper and I couldn’t help admiring the chunky alloys and mean stance of the car. We probably sounded like anoraks, but we started harking back to the days of our childhood when we lusted after the 1980s Scirocco. To be honest, there is still a glimpse of the old model there if you squint, but the ‘retro’ vibe still doesn’t detract from the sharp edged, seriously sexy look of today’s shape. Being a young(ish) dad-of-two, I also had a quick, rather sensible glimpse in the boot. It’s always important to me, even when testing sporty cars, to see if I can fit my children’s stuff, my wife’s things and my own gear into a car. Quite honestly I think the Scirocco would just about sort me out in that department – at a squeeze. Even with two doors, there’s enough room to lean in to the rear bench to hook up the child seats to the Isofix. I could be sold on the car. If a family man can say that he’d buy the VW Scirocco then you can see why a young couple or a single professional might lap this car up. I can just see a couple of mountain bikes or a surf board strapped to the Scirocco’s roof – it’s that sort of vision I have when really thinking about who would drive this lovely, powerful machine.

The only downside of my day with the stunning Scirocco R was that it was too short. But in the time I had with the VW, I had enough adrenaline pumping through my veins to know that this car will thrill anyone who buys it. The thrills won’t come cheap at nearly £29,000, but if Volkswagen reliability and build quality is anything to go by, you’ll not be sorry you splashed the cash.

THE PICTURE HOUSES

THE PICTURE HOUSES

A

few of us have been watching, with interest, the recent toing and froing of a stalwart of the Whiteladies Strip – The Picturehouse.

After the early demise of Penfolds Wine Bar, Nick Armitage took the opportunity to re-locate his dining establishment a stones throw across the road. Taking advantage of the larger, better equipped kitchen - and the quirky layout of the building - furniture, pictures, chefs et al were bundled over and after a couple of days of redecorating, PictureHouse East was born. Many of us fondly remember the al fresco dining of the old Quartier Vert and PHE has - with the help of a wonderful summer - recreated that joyous feeling of being on holiday. Exotic beers and tasty tapas can be sampled whilst soaking up the sun on the terrace, whilst indoors you can choose from the beautifully presented a la carte menu. But PictureHouse aficionados need not fear. The fantastic value lunchtime special is still available with 2 courses for £10. Try dishes such as garlic porcini and field mushrooms on toast followed by mussels a la greque with hand cut French fries, and you will not be disappointed. Upstairs at PHE is the private dining room that seats up to 16. This space also doubles up as a gallery and has

EYEZINE.CO.UK

already played host to several of Bristol’s most talented artists and photographers. Back over the road at The Old Picturehouse, things have definitely livened up and a fantastic cocktail bar has emerged. Always known as an up-market watering hole, the knowledgeable and talented staff still produce the same high standard of drinks but the décor is now more relaxed. The theme is distinctively ‘Tiki’…a Maori mythological figure…and pays homage to Nick‘s time spent learning his culinary skills in New Zealand. Also, Nick’s partner Vanessa is from New Zealand and so the idea was born. Drinks range from strong fruity concoctions served in bizarre drinkware -(The Volcano is my favouritea massive soup bowl of a cocktail with a flaming centrepiece) -to perfectly executed classics. The downstairs ‘Lava Lounge’ is all sumptuous red velvet and fiery images. This screening room is ideal for private parties and sporting events, and live music, including jazz, is regularly provided by up and coming local musicians. Food is served all day and specialises in giant steaks and char-grilled skewers of unusual meats, vegetables and seafood. So… clarification complete, all that remains is to pop along to Whiteladies Road and sample the double delights of PictureHouse East and The Old Picture House. To do so will be an experience that you will want to repeat time after time. BIG SCREEN

THE A-TEAM The infamous Ateam are brought kicking and screaming into modern cinema, a bit of a slow starter with some separate introductions to the characters, we are soon thrown into the action at full force. There are some unexpected plot twists and turns, and some great montage action set pieces as the team roll out plan after plan on their mission. Sure The A-Team was never going to be an amazingly thrilling and clever action classic, but if you view it as a piece of fun and nostalgia then it ticks all of the boxes. The Characters are a strong point, Liam Neeson we know about but the hugely entertaining fighter Rampage Jackson brings his charisma to the silver screen. Bradley Cooper is making himself a name in Hollywood and the real star (from district 9) Sharlton Copley. A very enjoyable film when taken at face value, but stay till the end, there’s more to see.

THE KARATE KID A firm favourite of mine as a kid and have been anticipating this for literally weeks (you may have noticed the release of this film crept up on us). Jaden Smith (son of Will) takes on the role of Daniel-san. Despite flashier moves and increased flexibility these were some iconic shoes to fill but young Smith pulls it off. The film as a whole is miles better than the original a real feat in my eyes as I was a true fan. Miyagi would be proud.

TOY STORY 3 Pixar have achieved a huge rarity in cinema, a second sequel which is absolutely fantastic. There are the same loveable characters blasting back into our lives with as much love and feel good factor as the first Toy Story. The addition of 3D only adds to the films success. With a format that appeals to every age and background we urge you to grab your friends and family and get to the cinema - we defy you to leave that showing without a smile.

MUSIC REVIEWS It could also be that one track everyone ends up having a unique and silly dance for, but that’s when you know your track has made it. That, and the endless radio airplay and dancefloor action it’s attracted so far.

ANT NICHOLS PROFESSOR GREEN – ALIVE TILL I’M DEAD

It all started with a label called ‘The Beats’. Then ideas flowed allowing Professor Green, aka Stephen Manderson, to rock through the first couple of years of his career. This led to a hook up with Lily Allen on her 2009 concert tour. After signing to Virgin Records, Pro Green released a track which sampled the 1988 INXS track for his single ‘I Need You Tonight’ which became instantly popular and is one of the two main tracks to check out on this album.

If you remember a track called ‘Why Don’t You’ by Gramophonedzie which came out back in March of this year, then you aren’t far off the sound of this new track. Coming out on All Around The World Records, this track is party, its dance and its tech all wrapped into one tune. And that’s before you check out the 8 or so different remixes in the package. TIM BERG – SEEK BROMANCE (AXWELL BOOTLEG) Tim Berg is otherwise known in the dance world as ‘Avicii’. Tim has remixed a number of massive tunes such as the David Guetta Ft Fergie ‘Getting Over You’ and new Enrique Inglesias track called ‘I Like It’. This track ‘Bromance’ first came out about 2-3 months ago without the vocal and was swiftly snapped by by Axwell who added the vocals to bring the track alive and lift the entire track itself.

You are likely to hear either the original bootleg or this Axwell The second, is a track written and layed down back in Pro version out in Ibiza across terraces this year. SMOKIN JOE FRAZIER

W

hen boxing was bold, bright and glamorous and each fight was a ‘contender’ for hottest sporting event of the year, Joe Frazier, as Heavyweight Champion of the World, was King. From 1970 to 1973, Smokin’ Joe reigned supreme and, with his career record standing at thirty-two wins (twenty-seven of which were from knockouts), four losses and one draw- not to mention an Olympic gold medalFrazier leaves little question that he is one of the sport’s all time greats. Well-known, loved and revered as both a gentleman and a fierce competitor in the ring, his good-hearted nature and uncanny ability to make people laugh have alwaysaccording to those who know him best- been part of his colourful character. Our showbiz and sports correspondent, James Davies went ten-rounds with the living legend to look back at his remarkable story. Born in 1944, Joe Frazier, the youngest of eleven children, grew up in South Carolina. After his father Rubin, a sharecropper, lost his arm in a shooting accident, a young Joe became his close companion, running errands on the family farm and making Moonshine- “a potent type of alcohol”, he assured me- in the back woods. As Joe came to the end of singing one of many songs during our chat, he explained: “I went everywhere with my father- we had a good time together. I learnt some good, some bad, but nothing ugly. After a slight pause, Joe took a sip from his drink and mused: “I came from humble beginnings and saw how hard my mother and father worked and said to myself, one day I will get mom, dad and the whole family a new life. Fortunately the good Lord answered my prayers.” Although it is easy to envisage a teenage Joe praying that one day he will become a boxing superstar, somewhat surprisingly he told me that nothing could be further from the truth. He says he became a boxer by accident, going to the gym to work himself into shape, not to become a prized fighter. “My uncle Rock was the one who inspired me to become a boxer. In the old days the men would sit on the stoop, watching fight-night and drinking Moonshine. Children were not allowed to mingle with the adults, but I would always walk through to take a look. My father would say: ‘Billy-Boy what are you doing out here?’ But Uncle Rock would tell my father to leave me alone, saying, ‘Who knows, he might be the next Joe Louis!’

EYEZINE.CO.UK

With a wry smile, Joe joked: “I took it to heart!” Determined to develop his skills in the ring, Joe, along with the cowboy hat he has worn for many years, left school and moved north. Aged just fifteen, Frazier settled with relatives in Philadelphia- a boxing Mecca. Sitting back in his chair, looking rather relaxed, he explained: “I wanted to make sure I made something out of myself. I knew what I wanted to do. I just wanted to put those gloves on and be champion of the world one day.” To pay the bills, Joe worked at a slaughter house, where he became the original ‘Rocky’, practising his jab against slabs of meat and staying in shape by running the streets of the city. “I used to run from where I lived to work really early in the morning- like four o’clock am!” As I began to ask him about the amateur fights that followed, Joe enthusiastically shouted, “Knock out, knock out, knock out!”, his way of explaining he won rather easily. It was here he began fighting competitively and became one of the world’s best amateur heavyweights, winning ‘The Golden Gloves’ three years in a row. Joe did not lose until he ran into Buster Mathis, his sparring partner, in the all important 1964 Olympic trials. But when Mathis hurt his hand just before the Games, Joe took his place and flew the flag for the United States. Like a child, Joe rather excitedly explained: “No one thought I could do it. There were like twelve boxers from America and everybody lost, besides me.” In the Olympic semi-finals, Joe broke his left thumb. He kept the injury a secret from officials, going for the gold with a fractured fist. “Had I told them, I would have been disqualified and I knew it was down to me to bring that gold medal back, as everyone else was out. Adding, after a brief chuckle, “I knew if I just hit him once, he’d be in trouble.” Joe Frazier was an Olympic Champion. “It’s my proudest moment in boxing. I was fighting for the Championship of the World, not just America!” After winning the gold medal, Joe returned to Philadelphia confident that his future was secure. But things were not that simple. “I had a gold medal round my neck but I still couldn’t get the proper management that I needed. They said I was too short and I was too small, and that big guys would just eat me up for breakfast, lunch and supper.” Despite his success in Tokyo, Joe remained an afterthought.

EYE.BRISTOL.AUGUST.2010

SMOKIN JOE FRAZIER But veteran trainer Yank Durham saw things differently. He and Joe went it alone in 1965. With Yank in his corner, Joe developed his signature style, and ran off eleven straight wins. Like a locomotive train, Joe never stopped and it was for this reason, according to Joe, that they called him “Smoke”. In September 1966, the Olympic Champion ran into tough guy Oscar Bonavena. The Argentine knockeddown Frazier twice in one round, but Smokin’ Joe came off the deck, showing his fans the heart and character that would mark his career, to win in the tenth round. After Bonavena, Frazier knocked out contenders Doug Jones and George Chuvalo, ending the year with nineteen straight wins. With Muhammad Ali’s exile from the sport, the Heavyweight division was in disarray. While the World Boxing Association (W.B.A) held an elimination tournament, Frazier was matched with his nemesis from his amateur days, Buster Mathis, for the New York State world title on March 4th , 1968. This time Mathis was not able to dance his way to victory over three rounds. A relentless Frazier wore down the bigger, heavier man and the bout was stopped in the eleventh-round. From 1968-70, Joe made six defences of his title, including a fifth-round knock-out of W.B.A champ Jimmy Ellis. But in the summer of 1970, Ali was finally granted a license to fight and the demand quickly grew for a showdown between the former undefeated champ and the reigning king. Now the two undefeated champions prepared for a battle like no other. By the end of 1970, Ali knocked out top contenders Jerry Quarry and Bonavena, setting the stage for the most anticipated heavyweight title fight since the Louis-Conn rematch of 1946. Frazier had befriended Ali during his exile, publicly supporting his right to fight and privately lending him money to survive. But once the bout was set, Ali cast himself as a symbol of ‘Black-Pride’ and Joe Frazier as an ‘Uncle Tom’. When Ali began to humiliate Joe during the promotion of the fight, Joe felt brutally betrayed. For the first time during the interview, Joe’s smile disappeared. “He was trying to make me afraid of him. I wasn’t afraid though.” Nevertheless, Ali’s taunts tormented Frazier. “I would go to bed at night and all I could see was him. I would always wake up the next morning in a sweat because I

EYEZINE.CO.UK

had fought him all night long in my dreams.” As the build up to the fight reached fever pitch, Joe’s family received a number of serious death threats. Joe’s confidence seemed to drift for a moment: “I was worried for my family but that never stopped me thinking about the fight and how I would get the job done.” On 8th March 1971, Joe Frazier fought Muhammad Ali in what would later be called ‘The Fight of the Century’, at Madison Square Garden with three-hundred million others tuning in from around the world. Each fighter was paid the then unheard of sum of $2.5 million. The build up to the fight was unparalleled in boxing history; transcending the sport and the sporting world. Before a sell-out crowd the two waged one of the greatest heavyweight battles ever. “I can still hear the roar that went up”. That night Joe Frazier was about as good a fighter as anyone has ever been in the ring, defeating Ali in the fifteenth-round with perhaps the most famous left hook in history, catching Ali on the jaw and knocking out the former champ for a four-count. Firing a jab towards my direction, Joe came alive. “He said before the fight ‘if I lose I will get on my hands and knees, crawl across the ring and say you are the greatest.’ He didn’t do that but I think he was too busy trying to get to the hospital.” Joe Frazier had won ‘The Fight of the Century’, beating Ali, but his troubles were far from over. The fight took a lot out of Joe, who did not fight again for the rest of the year. Having won the bout, Joe fiercely defended his title. To fellow fighters he seemed invincible. But in January 1973, Joe lost to George Foreman and his reign as champion ended in Kingston, Jamaica. Foreman knocked Frazier down six times before the fight was stopped in the second-round. “George was my hardest opponent. After the fourth knock-down I realised I was getting my butt whipped. He was tough because I couldn’t get out of the way of his punches!” Although Joe had lost his Heavy-weight crown, he went on to beat Joe Bugner in his next fight, only to be beaten by Ali in their rematch in January 1974. Although neither was a champ anymore, the bout was a sell out once again. “I was disappointed because I felt I won the fight. But at that time Ali was Ali and he couldn’t be beaten.” Joe soon got back to winning ways, setting the stage for yet another highly anticipated dual with Ali, who had since lifted the title from Foreman. In 1975, Frazier and Ali met for their third and final time,

in a fight later coined The Thriller in Manila. As fight night drew near, Ali let loose with another barrage of insults. For Ali all the taunting and name-calling was part of the game, but Joe couldn’t take it in that way. Once again Joe’s smile slowly disappeared. “I had a lot of anger. I didn’t understand why he was doing it. We had all the contracts signed, we made all the money, the seats were filled. There was a lot of wrong stuff that went down.” Joe, however, had more than just insults to worry about. High blood pressure and arthritis were breaking down his body while a cataract rendered his left eye all but blind. “I knew I was going blind but I still had that dream of being the champion so I wasn’t going to stop.” Frazier and Ali gave it all they had, battering each other round after round in the suffocating heat. The two ageing warriors duelled for fourteen rounds until a cut over Frazier’s good eye had left him nearly sightless in the ring. “I couldn’t see,” confessed Joe. As the bout reached its climax both fighters were exhausted, but Frazier’s eyes were nearly swollen shut, and his corner stopped the fight. ‘ The Thriller in Manila’ secured Joe Frazier’s legend. Joe Frazier had fought his final championship round but his children vowed to re-capture the throne. “The bad thing for my kids was that everyone and their sister wanted to beat them up because I was their Daddy. They had a rough deal but they managed.” Joe’s son Hector and his daughter Jacqui would fight professionally but it was Marvis- the family Heavyweightwho followed directly in his father’s footsteps, despite Joe’s misgivings. A confused looking Joe started to scratch his head as he said, “The kids had a great life. They all went to school and they were all smart, so I didn’t understand why they wanted to fight.” As Marvis moved up the ranks of Heavyweight contenders,

Joe moved into his corner. “Some people said I wanted him (Marvis) to fight like me. That’s right, I did, otherwise he wouldn’t be champion! (laughs)” In 1983, Marvis got his wish and fought for the Heavyweight crown against Larry Holmes. The fight was stopped in the first round. “How could I be mad?”, Frazier beamed. “I’d been there before. He tried his best.” For forty years Joe Frazier has called the gym his home, explaining: “Wherever I’m at, wherever I am in the world, my gym is my home. I’m comfortable there.” The life of a legend has not changed Joe’s routine. He still does the things he loved as a child- boxing, singing and tinkering with old cars. Although his body and voice show the strains of age, Joe is still in the game, training local kids in a neighbourhood that has seen better days. “It’s about community, it’s about touching lives, and it’s about changing lives. I think that kids appreciate it when they see someone who’s concerned about what they’re doing. If I turned my head and walked on, acting as though I don’t see, that’s wrong. I would say to the next generation of boxer, work hard; be true to your coaches and yourself. Something money can’t buy is love, time, loyalty, respect, integrity and honesty. I want for the young men and women what I achieved for myself! The secret to my success was my discipline, my hard work, and my faith in God!” Their three classic battles have forever linked Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali, but Joe’s bitterness from his insults lasted longer than the bruises from their fights. However in 2002, mutual friends brought the two legends together once again. So when I asked Joe to sum up his relationship with Ali, he simply said: “We had some rugged years and some hard times but it’s all over man. It’s done, it’s gone.” Words by James Davies www.jamesdaviesmedia.co.uk

FOOD & DRINK

THE LIVINGROOM The Living Room in Bristol is situated in the bustling Millenium Square area and the building itself is quite large with a great outdoor seating area for alfresco drinking. It features a 200 cover restaurant with ample space for drinkers. The Living Room is a cool, airy piano bar & restaurant in earthy tones -Manhattan loft with a colonial twist - that aims to provide quality without exclusivity, and high levels of service without high prices. A simple dish of pasta and glass of wine or a full course meal in your favourite restaurant, your choices at The Living Room are numerous. The casual, fun, relaxing approach to food and drink is the key to the venues success. The Living Room’s dedication to wholesome, simple food and quality cocktails is paramount. Frequent menu changes ensure yet more choice and cater directly for our more regular customers who visit us several times a month if not a week. Eye magazine were invited down to sample the delights of the new a la carte menu and experience the service first hand. We were seated on the mezzanine level overlooking the bar which if conversation ran dry (which it didn’t) would be a great place to people watch, especially on a Friday or Saturday night. The menu is comprehensive but not baffling. Clearly this has been well thought out and suitable for a vast range of tastes. To start we sampled an antipasto board - featuring prosciutto crudo, chorizo, bocconcini mozzarella, olives, sun blaze tomatoes and lemon and coriander houmous, with foccacia, extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. All the ingredients were fresh and the portions were generous.

EYEZINE.CO.UK

For the main course we decided upon prosciutto wrapped chicken breast filled with fresh herbs and mascarpone and blackened red snapper with caramelised lime and a mango and chilli salsa. Both dishes were very flavorsome and served in generous proportions. Indecisive as ever, for dessert, we opted for a sharing board of desserts. This consisted of blackberry and lemon posset, chocolate brownies, strawberry and chocolate fondue and Eton mess. Divine. The Living Room is a great place to unwind and enjoy company of friends and family. Great prices and sumptuous decor, I wish is was my Living Room.

UNDER THE STARS Under the Stars has only been open a few months, but there’s already an encouraging buzz about the place. Its location helps – on the ‘waterfront’, but away from the hustle and bustle that you’d usually associate with the ‘waterfront’. Under the Stars is a boat floating happily in the harbourside. The result is a two-deck restaurant which looks modern but not clinically formulaic. Design elements are meticulous but subtle, as demonstrated by the table that is in fact made from an old bath and some custom cut glass. The top deck is glittered with fairy lights and as twilight hits this space really comes alive. The menu is split into nibbly intros, breads, charcuteria, tapas style – veggie and meat and sharing platters. Main tapas dishes are priced between £3.50 and £4.00. The portions looked bigger than your average chain tapas so we were advised that four or five would be ample between the two of us. As I’m a big meat eater, we decided upon the charcuterie platter, choosing the Antipsti platter shortly after just to balance the meat out. Not wanting to feel we had left anything out we settled on freshly baked Garlic Baguette, Grilled Thai Green Ghicken and Thai Fish Cakes in addition. When we said it all together, it sounded like a lot. But thankfully our lovely waiter reassured us that it’s normal. The Charcuterie platter hosted a range of beautiful cold and cured meats with a small rocket salad for garnish. The Antipasti platter had a a slightly more interesting look with the bright

colours of the stuffed peppers and sun blushed tomatoes. They were both flavourful, colourful and we should have ordered and most probably will order more. The grilled Thai Green Chicken not only looked stunning but had a very fresh taste retained plenty of moisture during the cooking process. Delightful and super-moreish. I think I ended-up scoffing the lions portion, oops. In truth, there was little room left for desserts, so a coffee and the relaxing view topped the evening off.

There is another treatment called Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) which is used extensively outside the UK but is still considered ‘experimental’ by the Bristol Primary Care Trust, which has been unable to offer Martin this potentially life-saving treatment.
