Editor’s Note W
e could adopt that classic British tradition and talk about the weather. But honestly, I’m sure every one of you is fed-up to the back teeth of talking about, negative degrees, snow and how much ice was on your windscreen this morning. It’s cold, we get it. So lets take some time-out and relax with a coffee and an interesting read from local individuals, businesses and charities. It came to light the other day while talking with friends that the very concept of Eye magazine is not totally clear. So in a way we need to go back to the start and explain the open format that our magazine is built on. In simple terms we are a local magazine that publishes local news, reviews and interviews. We publish stories both on the web and in our magazine that are written by you. Yes you! Who’s better to comment on topics of interest than the individuals, businesses and charities of Bath and Bristol. To get you articles printed and on our website all we need is for you to visit our website and register for a FREE account. Once you’re logged in you can upload images and write your article. Once you’ve added our editor will review and approve your article for publication online.

Brother
Miles Jupp
Just when you thought Brit pop was over, Brother reinvents it. Calling themselves “gritpop”, not only do they sound like a rougher, rockier version of Oasis but they have the Lennon shades to prove it! Hotly tipped this year by everyone from the Guardian to Zane Lowe, they play Moles Dec 15.
Playing chameleon-like with class, character comedian Miles Jupp uses the persona of a privileged Eton-educated aristocrat to make astute humour out of tax haven using, island owning Conservative Party patrons. His dead-pan posh-boy humour won him Perrier Best Newcomer Award at the Edinburgh Fringe and he will perform at The Comedy Cavern Dec 12.
Get The Blessing Influenced by the work of Ornette Coleman, drummer Clive Deamer and bassist Jim Barr were once part of Portishead. With the addition of trumpeter Pete Judge and Jake McMurchie on saxophone, they have gone on to cement their surreal Jazz sound by winning Best Album at the Jazz Awards. They play The Bell Dec 13.
Matt Kirshen There is something boyish and naïve about Kirshen that is instantly disarming, but his relaxed wit, keen timing and wordplay mark him out as an accomplished joke teller and humourist. Completing the evening at the The Comedy Cavern on Dec 19 is support from Jay Sodagar and his social conscious comedy.
Three Bonzos and a Piano
Paul Kerensa
Art school 60s group the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band was like a musical Monty Python; huge swing numbers about parrots or spacemen, incongruous introductions and playful dance routines. Three of its surviving members, joined by Dave Glasson, have now recorded an album of new material; Hair of the Dog, and will be playing Komedia Bath Dec 12.
Kerensa’s concept show Borderline Racist takes a humourous look at international stereotypes and prejudices on Jan 21 at The Rondo Theatre. Find out why Dutchmen think Germans are bicycle-thieves and why Albanian tourism promoters use the slogan “Come travel to Albania, your car has already arrived.” Packed with the ludicrous and the absurd notions that nations have of the people beyond their borders.

Herding Cats
Pop Fiction
Acclaimed playwright Lucinda Coxon presents her latest work, Herding Cats, the story of three intertwined characters trying to balance life, love and relationships in the modern world. True to life and imbued with humour, Herding Cats looks set to be another success and runs from Dec 7-18 at the Bath Theatre Royal.
Check Moles’s latest Wednesday club night that will play “the best bubblegum pop, synth pop, hip-pop and kitchen sink pop”. Downstairs will be playing contemporary pop dudes and divas, such as Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Gnarls Barkley, and upstairs will feature classic 50s and 60s motown.
It’s a Wonderful Life
Lush
If there is one thing you do this Christmas to celebrate the season, let it be watching Hollywood classic It’s a Wonderful Life starring James Stewart at The Little Theatre Cinema Dec 17. Promising to please even the staunchest of Scrooges, there will be festive treats on offer, including mince pies, mulled wine and carols.
Just off Argyle Street, the Weir Lounge’s Saturday club night Lush is the best place to be when the weekend kicks off, with music provided by DJ Touch and resident rudeboy Marcus. A rip-roaring night of the smoothest party tunes every Saturday without fail.
Like You Were Before Artist Deborah Pearson explores memory, the passage of time and loss in this moving philosophical work. It centres around a reel of film taken five years ago in Canada, into which she has put new images of her present-day self. The overall product’s flaws stand as a telling testament to the immovability of time. Catch the show at the Bath Theatre Royal Jan 28-29.
Fela! Having won three Tony Awards this year, including best choreography, this vibrant hybrid of dance and music will wow audiences when it shows at The Little Theatre Cinema Jan 13. This musical production is inspired by legendary Afrobeat pioneer, Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, dancer, singer and political activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
New Year’s Eve Confession To kick off the New Year in Style get to Moles for Dec 31 which is hosting a DJ set from international best sellers Maximo Park, as well as Moles regular Mr Stevebob and Tom Chambers. Music flavours of the night will be indie, pop, electro, hip-hop and funk, with 80’s disco classics competing with the likes of Friendly Fires and Hot Chip. (For more on New Year’s Eve check out our feature on pg…)
Coco Loco If you can’t wait until the weekend, start early at Coco Loco, The Bluerooms’ Thursday club night. Just off Broad Street, with its sound track of classic tunes, RnB, house and electro, it’s a great place to get in the party spirit.

Brendon Burns
Newport bad boys of bling play The Fleece Dec 11, bringing their own brand of low-brow high-humour rap, equally celebrating and satirising chav culture.
Not for the easily offended, Brendon Burns’ ambitiously-titled show, Y’know Love n God n Metaphysics n Shit, sees him direct his provocative style of humour to all of life’s big questions, from sex to politics. The straight talking Aussie and Edinburgh Comedy Award winner will be hitting the Hen and Chicken Dec 5.
Belle & Sebastian Stuart Murdoch and Co are back after a four-year hiatus to promote new album Write About Love. For more cult Scottish indie-pop get yourself to the Colston Hall Dec 16.
Phantom Limb Mix soul, gospel and blues, add a phenomenal singer who has been compared to Aretha Franklin, and you’ve got Bristol’s next big thing, Yolanda Quartey and her band Phantom Limb. They look primed for success having already worked with Massive Attack, Robot Club and Damon Albarn. Check them out at Thekla Dec 19.
Devil Sold His Soul Intricate and uplifting choruses rich in melody mark out this pummelling progressive metal band. They will be rocking the Academy2 at the O2 Academy Jan 28.

Terry Alderton As record holder for the most Comedy Store encores, Alderton is not your usual comedian. His quirky and eccentric act – he tends to speak in tongues with his back turned to the audience – has the hallmarks of a masterful humourist ploughing his own furrow. He plays the Hen & Chicken Jan 21-22.
Russell Howard Bristol boy Russell Howard is a bona fide star these days, with regular TV appearances and his own show. He stands out from other comedians on the circuit for his childish idiosyncratic style, impish grin and taste for the macabre. Book early to avoid disappointment when he plays three intimate pre-tour warm-up gigs at the Tobacco Factory Theatre Jan 26-28

Word of Mouth
Charles Manson Disco Show
Three very different performance poets take the mic on Dec 9 in the basement of Bristol Old Vic: uplifting urban narratives from Kate Tempest, winner of the Nu–Yorican Poetry Café Slam, wit and wordplay from Ben Meller, and nuanced observations from Bristol’sown Shagufta Iqbal.
Following a trend for ever more outrageously titled club nights, the Charles Manson Disco Show at the Cube Cinema Dec 11 will see DJ sets from Haynes, Heidi Heelz and Heavy Heads banging out “sleaze-noise”. Plus pole-dancing, a strobe-light show, performances from The Flies fronted by former Spiritualized member Sean Cook, Let’s Scare Jessica To Death and most importantly the Charlie Manson House Band.
Jack Lear Drawing inspiration from Shakespeare’s King Lear, playwright Ben Benison has reimagined the tale and its central character for modern times. The trouble starts when old seadog Jack Lear comes to pass on his estate to his three daughters. Held at The Kelvin Players’ Studio Dec 7-11, the play is written in a blank verse capturing the sounds and atmospheres of a secluded fishing village.

Vodou Film Night
NYE at Motion
The Cube Cinema Jan 21 presents a thought provoking night on the subject of Vodou and its misrepresentation, with both the 2002 documentary Des Hommes et Des Dieux, which looks at homosexuality in the religion, and clips of Hollywood’s contrasting portrayal of “voodoo”. All proceeds go to the Haiti Kids Kino Project.
Always a massive night, this year promises to be no different with back-to-back sets from Toddla T & Redlight, Jamie Jones, Joker, a Friendly Fires DJ set, Dyed Soundorom, Doorly, Untold, Tayo, Julio Bashmore, Deepgroove, Futureboogie and many more to welcome in the New Year.
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra A world-class orchestra conducted by internationally renowned Yan Pascal Tortelier will play Richard Strauss’s Traumerei am Kamin, the Tchaikovsky Violin concerto and extracts from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. With violin from gifted Canadian James Ehnes – Jan 27 at the Colston Hall will be a date not to miss.
Lakota receives a visitation from veteran players in Drum’n’Bass on Dec 17. Spread over three floors, each with their own sound, the line includes Mampi Swift, Hatcha, Taxman, Majistrate, Logan D, Eksman, Shabba D, Crazy D, Fearless and Lok- I.
System Feedback – Psyco Edition Held at Lakota Jan 29, this will be a massive night of underground rave music, bands and wall-to-wall riggage from scene favourites Dirt, Unknown, Daylight Robbery, TSS and Nocturnal. Doors close at 6am.

Style Makeover This month’s winner of our £500 makeover was Angela Marshall. We were intrigued by her email enough to make her the winner. Angela fronts the relatively new band The metiers and wanted a new look to match.
is also a sound engineer and producer, with success in his own right as a solo singer-songwriter. Jack was introduced to the bass by his father with and continues to stretch the instrument as far as he can. Influences range from Siouxie and the Banshees, Pearl Jam, to Duffy, PJ Harvey and the Pretenders.
The metiérs are a new Bristol band to watch for 2011, put together 6 months ago by front women Angela Marshall who studied opera at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, and previously fronted Love Jungle. With a wealth of influences and experience between them, the music has been well received on their 2 gigs to date with comparisons ranging between pretty much all the iconic female vocalists you can dream of, the obvious comparison being Annie Lennox. The music has a very definite pop accessibility with darker seasoning added by Rich Wilcox (drums) Tony Barrett-Powell (guitar) and Jack Clarke (bass).
The metiérs are in the studio in December and are set to release their first EP early next year. Catch The metiérs at the Louisiana on January 5th and on myspace (www.myspace.com/themetiers).
Rich has already been in a signed band and has performed as a session drummer for many years. He is also in high demand as a covers drummer, influenced in drumming style by John Bonham and Steve White with a general influence being a real eclectic mix ranging from folk to rock and initially inspired by New Wave music. After being in several bands over the years, Tony turned to producing drum and bass music in the 90’s. He

YAYER
Words: Siobhan Fagan Images: Yayer shoot AW2010, Photographed by Jake Burge
Starting off in one of Bristol’s favourite independent stores, My Yard, which sits half way up the bar and boutique lined Park Street, Yayer has well and truly taken off since it launched in 2009. Using My Yard as a platform to launch the label, sisters Harriet and Charlotte Walters used their passion to create something special and unique to the fashion industry. Yayer now has its own website, a huge following on Facebook and Twitter and exciting plans for the new year. I caught up with Harriet to hear about what Yayer is up to at the moment, how they took off in such little time and to get the gossip on their future plans.
EYEZINE.CO.UK
How did Yayer start out? Was it the product of a lifetime dream? I studied in fashion and Charlotte in textiles, so we’ve both known for a while that we wanted to be involved in this line of work. I’ve worked as a buyer and stylist and Charlotte’s been designing clothes for a few years now. We liked the idea of working for ourselves and creating something which was our own so we started Yayer. We feel pretty lucky to be doing something we love on a daily basis. You launched in 2009 and now have your own website, online shop, blog and a huge following. Did you expect to be this successful? We had no idea that things would move quickly. The brand began on such a small level, initially being stocked in only one local store (My Yard) where it got an amazing response. Styles were selling out within days
and we were receiving great feedback from people. We decided to take it to the next level and began work on opening our own online store early this year. With our own collections drawing influence from vintage patterns and because we have such a personal love for vintage clothing, we decided to offer a product mix of fashion forward vintage garments, modern styles and our own Yayer branded lines. We don’t purposefully try to target anyone in particular; we like the idea of our site being something everyone could love. I think if you’re fairly fashion conscious and you’re into your vintage clothing then you should probably take a look. What do you think it is about Yayer that people love so much? The website’s only been live for about 3 months now and things are moving at such a fast pace. Styles often sell out within hours of us posting up new stock and there seems to be a real buzz about it on Twitter and Facebook; we receive compliments daily from people saying how much they love the styling, the branding and just generally what we’re doing, it’s really nice to hear. I think we were lucky because there was definitely a gap in the market for a fresh young fashion site, one offering on-trend vintage at reasonable prices. There aren’t many vintage sites offering products which are relevant to current trends and I think this is one of our big appeals. We know that you’ve been at My Yard and you now have the website, but is there anywhere else in Bristol or Bath that we can find the label? The only store we currently stock in is My Yard. We used the shop as a platform to launch the brand as they’re a great independent store, especially for aspiring labels. We’re in the process of designing our SS11 collection and this is something we will be putting to wholesale next year. Where do you see the label in a couple of years time, seeing that you’ve come so far in just a year already? We are hoping to expand the brand considerably over the next few years. We’ve got some big plans for our own collection which we’d love to see stocked across the country. We will also be developing the website in early 2011 to offer a better shopping experience. We’ll be working hard and crossing fingers, toes and everything else in hope that things continue to grow as quickly as they have been these last few months. www. yayer.co.uk

How to make the most of the January sales.
2.
W
ith the January sales just around the corner, many of us are now counting down the days until they can hit the stores in search of the ultimate bargain. But with just so much choice, how do you make sure you pick the right trends and styles? Thanks to these top tips from Cabot Circus you’ll be well prepared for the next sales rush and will know just how to build up your dream wardrobe.
3.
1. Audit your wardrobe
Before hitting the sales, take time to look through your wardrobe and work out what you need. What basics are you missing? What colours would work well with your existing clothes? What items would help you mix and match to create new outfits?
2. Get the foundations right
Great underwear is the foundation for any outfit, so it’s worth using the sales to stock up on good quality lingerie. Over 80 per cent of women are still wearing the wrong bra size. Getting the right bra size can really improve posture, as well as enhance the way your clothes look. La Senza offers free bra fittings and has a wide range of underwear in store.

3. Choose classic pieces that will never date
The sales are a great opportunity for investment purchases. Buy simple styles and classic designs which can be worn season after season and are easily updated with on-trend accessories. It is also important to choose good quality fabrics, such as jersey, cotton and cashmere, which don’t date and, if cared for properly, will last for years. As a general rule of thumb, items such as trench coats, the little black dress and a crisp white shirt are timeless and versatile pieces which are useful all year round and will help form the basics of a stylish, durable wardrobe.
4. Know your trends
Sales are great for buying the latest styles at reduced prices, as it won’t hit your pockets too hard when they go out of fashion. Trends to look out for this season:
• • • • •
Maxi dress – the maxi dress will continue to be a wardrobe staple well into the new year. Sheer fabrics – These are set to be a hot combination of trends for Spring 2011. Lace – spring 2010 will see the lace trend continue, but more to the classic side with quality antique-style fabrics. Clogs – the clog reached new heights in 2010 and will continue into 2011. Ladylike – the silhouettes of the 1950s will continue, with shapes that accentuate curves and foster femininity.
5. Don’t buy something just because it’s a bargain
Many of us are guilty of buying something just because it’s a bargain – even if it doesn’t fit or suit our needs. If you spot an item you love then take a moment before handing over your credit card to ask yourself how much wear you will get out of it.

CHRISTMAS SURVIVAL
Sex at the Parents Place.
C
hristmas is a time for debauchery and excess. Here at Pomegranate Boutique we suggest you take this without even the slightest pinch of salt. So here are our suggestions to escape the family and indulge in a deliciously naughty moment with your man, lady or good self.
Chrimbo commando Start by facilitating the task in hand by refraining from wearing underwear in order to allow quick access to the play area. Alternatively, wear peek-a-boo which can be pulled aside. Open communications Next, we highly recommend you warm each other up by sending each other saucy texts at the table. Only you two will know why you’re both flushed and gulping through the Christmas pudding. Be filthily imaginative about the things you intend to do to one another. Include reference to bondage tape. This will build up anticipation and fuel your creativity. Booze up the in-laws Make sure the in-laws’ wine glasses are full to the brim at all times to guarantee they promptly fall asleep in front of the telly after dinner. How easy to then have a secret roll in the hay! Mercy dash See to it that the brandy cream runs out and you both must rush to the shop to retrieve some or pudding will be ruined. Cue to a quickie in the car (make sure you are somewhere dark and quiet and keep your headlights off; unless you wish to attract festive doggers out on the prowl). Medical aid Another tried and tested method of getting some time alone would be announcing to the family that your partner needs to help you apply medicinal cream to your highly contagious rash (that is affecting an area you are unable to reach yourself). No one will want further details, so this will buy you time together in the bathroom where you may then indulge in a giggly session, against the sink, on the floor or bent over the bath- preferably within view of a mirror.
EYEZINE.CO.UK
Dutiful kids Insist on doing the washing up (again, few would argue with this) which will buy you a good half hour alone in the kitchen. Keep the rubber gloves on and have some fun with the suds. Fly solo Ladies, there are many ways you can warm your cockles and jingle your bells solo. You will need a quiet vibrating toy to enjoy, so we recommend the Fonzie with his 7 vibration settings. It is also waterproof so after a stressful family day, get in the bath and wish yourself a very merry Christmas. Men, as a treat to yourself, line yourself up with the re-usable Bomber Jacket (£10) and rock your little elf until he smiles. Merry Christmas all. xx Amy & Susannah, Pomegranate Boutique http://pomegranateboutique.co.uk 30 Park St, BS1 5JA. Mo-Sa 10-6, Su 12-5.

This unique service has made Anytime Fitness a hugely popular choice of gym in America, and its success – already the biggest, it is the fastest growing fitness chain in the world – is testament to the power of a good idea. One of the first flagship Anytime Fitness gyms to open in the UK has been built right here in the centre of Bristol, at the top of Park Street on Queens Road. An unassuming entrance slotted into the row of bustling city shops leads down a staircase to a vault-like underground gym. It is an incredible space. Up on ground level every inch of pavement is being fought for, yet a world away at Anytime Fitness there is a calm relaxed atmosphere; three guys are chatting by the free weights, and a couple of girls are on the running machines. Having just opened, it is spotless and kitted out with the latest brand new machines and equipment, but as manager Ben assures me, that is the way it is going to stay. Anytime Fitness has a strict policy about keeping the equipment clean and replacing anything worn out or outdated. Pristine, guaranteed. The gym is furnished with running and rowing machines, cross trainers and exercise bikes, plus kettle bells, balance trainers, body core platforms and a variety of cable pulley machines and fixed-resistance equipment. There is a large free weights space with an extensive selection, horizontal and vertical tanning beds, HDTV playing the club’s own TV channels and, of course, a secure lockers system and clean, well maintained changing rooms. The staff at Anytime Fitness are professional, friendly and always keen to make sure you get the most out of your gym. They provide full training of the equipment, though every machine has instructions, as well as basic fitness advice. If you feel you need a little extra help or motivation, the club has a hand-picked roster of the best personal
EYEZINE.CO.UK
trainers in the area on hand. And Anytime Fitness differs from a lot of other gyms in that all of its personal trainers are self-employed, meaning that your satisfaction is their priority. Members are given their own electronic key to the gym. During the day the centre is fully staffed and, at night when a member might feel they have the place to themselves, for their safety a specialist CCTV observation station is monitoring meticulously all night. Personal alarms are provided; worn around the neck, they are another way in which Anytime Fitness members can keep in touch if they are in need of assistance. With around 1,300 gyms and growing worldwide and 50 to be built in the UK by next year, one of the biggest benefits that makes Anytime Fitness so convenient is that when you join, you can access the entire global network. If you are someone who travels a lot, whether for business or pleasure, you can still fit in a session at the gym. Anytime Fitness is handily positioned right in town, very competitively priced (less than £30 a month), fantastically kitted out, with professional staff and a great relaxed atmosphere. So whatever you are looking for – burning some calories in your lunch break, somewhere to train for a sports event or to get in shape – there is always time to train, and with Anytime Fitness that is whatever time suits you. HEALTH & FITNESS
Festive Fitness Tips C
harlie Walker our resident fitness guru puts together some tips for maintaining a healthly body this Christmas without being a humbug.
Go out walking
A nice way to spend a winter day with the family can also be used as the perfect calorie burner without having to visit the gym.
Snack on nuts
Rather than snacking on chocolate and crisps this Christmas why not buy some unsalted nuts, especially almonds, as they are a great source of protein 2. and healthy fats which your body requires.
Wii Fit
Not something I would ever normally advocate or design my training routine around. However, it is, at least a game which involves everybody and gets you working out in a fun way.
Steer clear of beer
Stick to spirits over Christmas if you are going to drink, lager has one of the highest calorie counts of any alcoholic beverage. Reach for Vodka alternately but be aware that as soon as you add a mixer the calories can creep up.
Eat lots of turkey
Turkey has the lowest fat content of all our regular meats and contains lots of essential protein which is good for us.
Vegetables
The vitamins and minerals found in our vegetables over Christmas, especially Brussels Sprouts, are essential in our daily diet and can help to boost our immunity to unwanted bugs which are prevalent around this time of year.
Take a break
Why not use Christmas as a well earned rest, your body needs rest and
EYEZINE.CO.UK
recovery time in order to make those all important gains we look for in our body so enjoy yourself and take it easy.
Plan
Why not take this time to plan your fitness goals for 2011 and decide what you want to achieve... Having SMART goals (Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic, Timed) is the best way of keeping yourself focused.
Home workouts
There are plenty of good body weight and core exercises that can be done within the home and will keep you fit over the festive period.
Stairs
If you don’t feel like braving the cold then why not do your cardio at home, running the stairs in your house is a great way of getting your heart rate up and staying in shape.

Saab 9-5 2.8T XWD Aero By Tim Barnes-Clay
T
HIS IS a car I could easily live with. It’s smooth, fast and very comfortable. The new Saab 9-5 is also fantastically solid and, with allwheel-drive, it holds the road like a fly sticks to fly-paper. I also like the way the latest model looks. It is sleek and, unusually, the rear lights extend elegantly across the entire width of the boot. The result is an unbroken, glowing stripe of red light - making the car not only highly visible, but also very sexy. Of course, some may sneer at this Saab, and call it a Vauxhall in drag. In a way that is true, because it is related to the Insignia, but to be fair, 70 percent of the parts that make up the 9-5 are unique to Saab. The vast majority of the components were created in Sweden and some were made under the close supervision of Swedish engineering bosses at General Motors in Germany. Compared to the Insignia the 9-5 gets an extra 10cm in the wheelbase, meaning exceptional legroom both at the front and the rear, as well as a very generous boot. It also has a wide, well designed cabin, which remains true to Saab’s traditional Swedish styling. The seats are also ultra-comfortable; in fact, they are possibly the most supportive car seats I’ve sat in for a long while. My test vehicle also came with an optional head-up display unit, meaning I could see the speedometer and fuel readings etc all projected onto the windscreen. Great for keeping an eye on speed or fuel range without even thinking about it. The Saab 9-5 2.8T XWD Aero’s massive 2.8-litre V6 engine is gloriously smooth and the six-speed auto-box is quick to react. Put it this way, the potent lump can propel the car from 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds to a top speed of 155 mph, despite the Saab weighing in at 1945kg. That’s some achievement! Regardless of all the power under the hood, the Saab 9-5 is a very relaxing car to be in. It’s so quiet and the busy world seems to rush by outside while things on the inside are tranquil. This is almost certainly explained by the car’s active damping and front suspension
EYEZINE.CO.UK
technology, which work together to cut out the rumble from the road surface. They basically help to isolate the driver from all that is unnecessary to hear, while allowing the car to move very rapidly. All in all Saab’s flagship model is a highly impressive motor. It is speedy, velvety smooth and sophisticated. My only worry is that BMWs and Audis will draw a bigger crowd of admirers because of badge snobbery. But this Saab offers more kit than the average German autobahn eater – so anyone considering a change from their usual ‘vorsprung durch technik’ executive machine could do a lot worse than visiting a Saab showroom and going for the very polished new 9-5.

Mitsubishi ASX 3 1.8 Diesel 2WD
The Mitsubishi ASX will appeal to anyone who likes a bit of fun and practicality mixed together. The individual shape of the car looks chic and the Japanese motor manufacturer offers some sexy shades of metallic colours, which make the ASX look even better. It’s a fantastic first car to buy because it’s so easy to drive and offers great value for money. Above all, it is certainly the right vehicle to get if you’ve just had kids and you need something with space and economy, but still want a car with a funky edge.
By Tim Barnes-Clay
S
TANDING FOR ‘Active Sports Crossover’, the Mitsubishi ASX is a model that unashamedly pays homage to the massively popular Nissan Qashqai. The car basically blends the merits of a compact hatchback and a condensed SUV into one. The Mitsubishi is built using the same floor as the well-known Lancer and Outlander models and it features a stop-start system as standard, which brings the engine to a halt when the car is not moving. LED lighting and electric power steering, are just a few of the other standard fitments too. The diesel, on test here, gets a six-speed gearbox to help with economy, but the ASX’s cabin is really the selling point. It’s really spacious, with superb rear legroom, decent headroom and a dash which features a vibrant set of expensive looking dials. The ASX’s seats are comfortable and give a first-rate driving position, making it easy to drive and, for a tallish vehicle, the car inspires confidence because it feels well planted to the road. The diesel engine takes a while to warm up, but it packs a punch when the turbo kicks in, and the standard stop-start system works well without much judder as the engine turns off and restarts. GAME GEEKS
The Exchange Den Where better to find the thoroughly modern enterprise of newly-opened computer games store The Exchange Den than St Nicholas Market in Bristol, which has been the beating heart of the city continuously since 1743?
Amid the food vendors, bookshops and trinket stalls, The Exchange Den is positioned in the Covered Market area, taking forward the St Nicks traditions of fair trading, customer satisfaction and expert advice. It stocks brand new triple A titles across a range of platforms, as well as buying and selling pre-owned games, movies and consoles. The shop has quickly made a mark for itself, fostering a community of like-minded gamers and proving to be a great spot to drop in for a chat about the latest titles and releases. Owner Joe Dowden has the advantage of being an independent with the freedom to stock rare or sort-after films and games, as well as retro systems, like Sega Megadrive and Atari, that today are ignored completely by high street retailers. As anyone enthusiastic about gaming culture will tell you, this is vital because it is often the obscure and difficult to find titles that are worth pursuing. Plus, if you have been after a particular title or just want to order a game that a high street retailer does not stock, Joe can track that elusive copy down for you. An example of the personal service that The Exchange Den offers is over bundle deals of console and games. Joe says of other retailers “often they wont let you choose the games, which can be a way for the stores to offload titles they don’t sell. I know how annoying it can be to be lumped with a title you don’t want, so I always let the customer choose the games that they want to play.”
knowledge about all fields of popular culture and entertainment. He is the embodiment of the St Nick spirit of enterprise; after working for three years in computer games retail as a manager, at just 24 years old he has set up his own business, and what he lacks in years he more than makes up for with enthusiasm and knowledge. Hearing him talk about his passion reminds me that though the computer games industry is big business, underneath what it has always been about is fun. Joe and The Exchange Den re-injects the fun back into the experience of gaming, from the excitement of discovering a new favourite to the banter of discussing old classics.
Inside, the shop is a cosy treasure trove of everything to do with computer games, shelves stacked to the ceiling with X-box and PS3 titles, and racks of cult DVDs. If you need advice from someone approachable and friendly, self-professed geek Joe is the expert, with a wealth of
Whatever genres you are into, console you have, or completed game you want to trade, The Exchange Den offers great service, friendly advice and of course competitive prices. It is open Monday to Saturday 9.30am-5pm, with extended opening hours throughout December.

Have paints, will travel. O By Alex Cater
n a cold and blustery autumn day, red and yellow leaves fill the gutters as sporadic cars go past the window of the café in Redland where I am talking to artist and stencilist Ian Boyd Walker about his latest painting for the Pirates and Roses fashion boutique. Although a fan of Art Nouveau painter Alphonse Mucha, pop artist Andy Warhol and old Japanese woodblock prints, Walker’s main passion has always been the street art and lowbrow movement. His work has a strong vein of humour running right through it, incorporating characters like Peter Cushing as Sherlock Holmes straight into the mix of bold colours, surreal landscapes, sci-fi UFOs and skateboard imagery. Walker tells me how he remembers, when living in Southville during the 90s, seeing Banksy’s early work going up on walls around the city. How times have changed with Banksy’s meteoric rise to fame, although Walker himself has not done badly in the interim, with his work shown around the world and as far afield as Los Angeles. He has just finished a summer packed full of painting and graffiti demonstrations, from Bristol’s own UpFest and BrisFest to NASS, Boardmasters, Weston-super-Mare’s Street Fest and an urban regeneration project in Kidderminster. “Have paints, will travel” is Walker’s motto and 2011 already has another solo exhibition being planned and work pencilled in at Upfest. Whatever the coming year holds, he’s say he is ready for it. Walker’s latest work is not a new gallery piece or graffiti stencilled in the dead of night but a gift to celebrate the first year of opening for high fashion boutique Pirates and Roses, which can be found just off Portland Street in Clifton Village, and to which he has close ties. Taking its name from stylishly dressed seafarers and beautiful and demure girls, Pirates and Roses is an inspiring and original boutique full of booty, which sources fantastic one-off gems and unique pieces made by the very best fashion designers from all over the World. At the shop’s heart is a playfulness about fashion and its ethos of individuality and style epitomises Bristol and it is no surprise to find that since its opening a year ago it has found strong support from local fashionistas. Walker’s work is a large pastiche of Leonardo da Vinci’s painting The Last Supper and is full of that irreverent humour and the
EYEZINE.CO.UK
appropriation of cultural iconography so typical of the Bristol street art scene. Still a work in progress when I get to see it, Walker has used a mixture of stencils and straight painting to create a fantastic pirate-themed parody of the original. The painting sees Christ removed from his usual place at the centre of the fresco; instead, pirate leader Captain Jack Sparrow takes that role, fresh from his cinematic adventures. With him are a merry band of swashbuckling disciples, the faces of which you may recognise if you have visited the Pirates and Roses shop at all over the last year, because they are all people that have helped out with setting up the boutique and ensured its continuing success. The work was commissioned by the boutique as a thank you to all of those involved for the wonderful support it has received over the past year. With Captain Jack poring over a treasure map and discussing it with this crew of Pirates and Roses helpers, the painting becomes not a Last Supper but a proposal for the boutique’s next adventures over the coming year with its band of intrepid accomplices. Behind the figures is a billowing Union Flag and around the frayed and worn antique edges of the scene, the motif of a nautical map is repeated, complete with mermaids and ships. It’s a fitting tribute to the unique shop and once the final touches have been added, it is sure to be a fitting masterpiece in its own right. The painting will be on display at the Pirates & Roses Store from December onwards. www.piratesandroses.com is launching early 2011.

ALBUMS OF THE MONTH: MICHAEL JACKSON ‘MICHAEL’ Finally after rumours were rife about what was happening with the next wave of Michael Jackson material, Epic Records, only a few weeks back, went some way to releasing details about plans for the next Michael Jackson Album. The album will be called ‘Michael’ and will be released on December 14. Teasers for the project have been online over the last few weeks on MichaelJackson.com. Key moment from Jacko’s life have been depicted on the front cover of the album. At the time of his death, Michael had been working for years on a follow up to his 2001’s Invinsible, recording tracks with Lenny Kravitz, Akon and Will.I.Am to name a few. The former head of Sony Records said there are “dozens” of unreleased tracks that could see the light of day at some point.
Over the years the Shapeshifters have brought us some of the hottest tracks heard in our clubs across the South West. They have produced tracks such as the well known Lola’s theme through to the more recent ‘Chime’; which was a re-work of the Orbital classic. Now Simon and Max are back with another big room tune called ‘She Freaks’ which came out at the end of November on Defected Records. This comes hot on the heels of the last track ‘Helter Skelter’. ‘She Freaks’ is another infectious track with an intensive slice of main room mayhem; the pounding drums and razor sharp sounds which drive you energetically towards the explosive breakdown. It all culminates in a vocal hook you’ll be singing for weeks. The lads are currently playing across America and Canada and we await more from the Shapeshifters camp in 2011. DOWNLOAD DATE: 24 NOVEMBER
THE BEATTHEIFS - UMBUNGO Look out for a track which at first, might sound like a soft juice drink you drank as a kid, but is anything but soft. Henry & Tony have produced an energetic tech house monster already doing some damage on dancefloors at the Amsterdam Dance Event where it got its first plays. Chocolate Puma better known for ‘I Wanna Be You’ back in 2001, has delivered a fierce tribal monster remix for us all to love! DOWNLOAD DATE: DECEMBER 2010
FRANCESCO DIAZ & YOUNG REBELS FT SHAWNEE TAYLOR – L.O.V.E There isn’t much floating around on this track at the moment but the instrumental comes out in December, we are told there is going to be a massive vocal ready in time for the New Year so watch out for this track online as Francesco Diaz always does some pretty wicked production.

GREG STAINER – KEEP IT REAL
If you love your house and you like it deep and chunky then check out Volume 6 of the Strictly Rhythm series. Coming out 07 Decmeber off Defected, Dutch/Chilean house producer, Ramon Tapia has selected and mixed a range of tracks that will appeal to any house heads and providing a new jazzy, funked up groove aimed squarely at the dancefloor.
If you are reading the name feeling a little lost its probably because Greg lives out in Dubai and produces tracks from his home studio, although Greg Stainer is a name to take note of in 2011 with some nice tracks coming through. ‘Keep It Real’ being the first, and a cheeky re-make of an Old Skool track which has already had some big DJ support. Expect some pretty cool mixes from the likes of Davidson Ospina, Jolyon Petch & Dave Floyd.

Racks
R
acks, now over 25 years in the making, is situated in the very heart of Clifton, a stones throw from Whiteladies Road and easily assessable for everyone.
Depending on what you are looking for, Racks can provide you with any ambience you require. What I mean is that it provides Al Fresco dining, a buzzing bar area which also has alcove seating should you wish for a more intimate setting. And then of course, the restaurant area. This again provides both chic and rustic charm all in one. We were greeted and seated by Nadia who was utterly charming. The menu is extensive to say the least. In the end, we plumbed for the crab, asparagus and chilli risotto with aged parmesan gratin and a balsamic reduction plus a Loch Duart salmon cake with a creamy leak and dill sauce for starters. Starters! Goodness me, there was nothing small or aperitif about this food as the portions are most generous indeed. We were also very tempted by the goats’ cheese, sweet potato and caramelised ciabatta with roasted cherry tomatoes (v) add Parma ham for the non-veggie. We were slightly concerned that we had over-ordered when we were then presented with our mains; chargrilled chicken breast with mozzarella and wrapped in Parma ham, with rosemary sweet potato dauphinoise and a wild mushroom sauce and 21 day hung 8oz rib eye steak with hand cut chips, veg or salad and your choice of pink peppercorn, red wine or wild mushroom sauce. And then to desserts… yes we managed to squeeze one of those in too although we did share. Rich chocolate pudding with warm chocolate sauce and ice cream. Absolutely delicious. Other options were lime panacotta with mango sorbet, sticky toffee pudding with ice cream and of course the ultimate cheese board. Oh… and don’t forget the wine list which again you are spoilt for choice. We washed all this down with a Pinot Grigio or two!
EYEZINE.CO.UK
Ultimately the food was faultless. Cooked to perfection but be warned, the portions are on the large side so save yourself! If you’re on a diet, forget it – it’s a venue for pure self-indulgence. Racks has so many tempting offers such as themed evenings, discounts for students, live music nights, private bookings, DJ’s alongside it’s happy hours which runs from 5.30 – 7.00pm nightly. The manager, Colin Cameron is switched on to exactly what the people want. You would be hard pushed to find anywhere so flexible or welcoming for whatever you’re looking for.
