the man who wrote the
Messiah
Even though the little boy’s passion was music, his father forbid musical instruments in their home. Behind that austere act was this paternal concern: music and theater offered almost no career security. The future for musicians was grim and the father was concerned that his little boy might not be able to support himself, let alone a family should he have one. A legal career offered much more security and a brighter future, the father insisted, and thus he began programming his son, George, toward the study of law. And, George might very well have become a lawyer had it not been for a business trip taken by his father. A trip that would become George’s encounter with destiny. His father, a surgeon in the German town of Halle, had been summoned to the court of Duke Johann Adolf at Weissenfels. George begged to come along and the father agreed. While his father conducted business, young George, somewhat bored, wandered into the palace chapel and began improvising on the royal organ. Before long, the sound of footsteps caused him to turn. Standing there, watching in utter amazement at the little boy playing such majestic music, was Duke Johann Adolf himself. “Who is the remarkable child?” the Duke asked a member of his staff. Upon learning the youth was the son of the surgeon visiting the palace, the Duke spoke seriously and convincingly to the father, persuading him that it would be a mistake to turn such a musically gifted boy into a lawyer. Unable to resist the Duke’s logic and plea, the father allowed his son, George Frederick Handel, to study music. Upon returning to Halle, Handel learned quickly. First he was a pupil of Zachau, the cathedral organist who trained him as a composer and performer on several keyed instruments as well as on the oboe and the violin. He soon outgrew his teacher and had to leave Halle, first for Hamburg, then for Italy, where he mastered the art of composing operas. Handel traveled from one Italian court to another astonishing all who heard his music, much of which he himself played on either the harpsichord or the organ. Although only in his mid-twenties, Handel’s glowing reputation spread from Italy back to Germany. There, in 1710, a German prince, George Ludwig of Hanover, offered him the position of court musician. For any composer this was a dream come true because it provided a sizable and guaranteed income. The only negative aspect of the position Handel’s organ, Foundling Hospital, London. 8

can only imagine Handel’s initial reaction upon learning that the ruler of England was the man whose service he had deserted. Deeply concerned about the King’s reaction to him, Handel wrote the exquisite “Water Music” arranging it to be played by musicians aboard a barge as the new King was rowed up the Thames. “What is that heavenly music!” King George exclaimed. “I must meet the composer.” If there were any feelings of disappointment or anger on the part of King George, they were never revealed. In fact, he added an additional 200 pounds to Handel’s yearly stipend. The next ten years were Handel’s glory years as he composed and performed for an ever adoring audience. So popular and powerful and confident was Handel that he refused to be intimidated by either patrons or celebrated singers. One frustrated tenor threatened to jump headfirst into a harpsichord if Handel did not alter a tune. “That would be vastly more entertaining than your singing,” the composer replied. Another time, a soprano announced she would not sing her part the way he had instructed. Handel told her she must or he would drop her out a window. To emphasize his point, he picked her up and headed for the nearest sill. However, by the mid 1720s Handel’s fame

and fortune began fading. His popularity decreased, audiences dwindled and by 1728 he was forced into bankruptcy. In order to survive, Handel turned to concert performances. While that brought him bread and butter money, Handel continued to turn out more Italian style operas hoping for a reversal of circumstances. to represent Shorewest, Realtors® on the show. It was a great opportunity for us to highlight our community involvement and many sponsorships. As a company that was founded in Wauwatosa, we still have deep roots here and we are committed to the community that we are honored to serve as we feel we are truly Wauwatosa’s Realtor. Just a few of the many other charities that we support include Our Next Generation, Food for Families, Hunger Task Force, Coats for Kids and a monthly Casual Day. Each month a Shorewest office or department chooses a charity and for a $2 donation, we are able to dress casually that day for a cause. Shorewest matches the donations up to $1,000. Last year that amounted to more than $21,000 from our monthly Casual Day efforts. The Elmbrook/Wauwatosa Office chose The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation as our charity and raised over $2,000 as an office and company for this very worthy cause.

public support. Finally, in 1737, utterly exhausted from overwork and deeply disappointed, Handel suffered a paralyzing stroke. That stroke took away the use of his right arm including the fingers he had used to play the harpsichord and organ. Word of his stroke spread rapidly all over Europe. The future Frederick the Great of Prussia wrote his royal cousins in England sadly declaring: “Handel’s great days are over. His inspiration is exhausted and his taste behind the fashion.” Desperate, Handel left England in the summer of 1737 hoping for a cure at the famous hot springs of Aachen, Germany. There he sat, day after day, in the bubbling waters tended by Catholic nuns who operated the facility. One day, Handel abruptly left the baths and dressed quickly. Several hours later when he did not return for his next treatment, the nuns grew alarmed and began to search for him. Then, from the abbey church, they heard a burst of glorious music. Running to investigate, the nuns were stunned to see Handel, his right arm and fingers completely restored, playing the organ. Doctors could not account for his healing. Upon returning to London, Handel immediately began writing operas again. However, the return of Handel’s health was not accompanied by a public in favor of his music. All of his operas failed upon opening. By 1741, Handel again found himself deeply in debt.

He owed immense sums of money and in that day, even those as famous as Handel, could end their lives in debtors’ prison. Then, in the midst of that despairing moment on August 21, 1741, a bulky parcel was delivered to Handel. It was from the poet Charles Jennens who sent Handel a manuscript inviting the composer to add music to the writing. As Handel looked it over, he saw immediately that it was not an original piece of writing. Rather, Jennens creatively took

Although the letter inviting Handel to compose music did not indicate much compensation, Handel accepted the offer and began to write in the early hours of August 22nd. As he wrote, inspiration seized Handel. When darkness came over the city of London, there was a brilliant light in Handel’s soul. For three weeks, day and night, Handel wrote and wrote and wrote. The entire enormous work was complete on September 14th, only 23 days after he began. Even Handel stared unbelievably at the enormous musical score he had composed. With the work complete, Handel stumbled to his bed and fell asleep. When, 17 hours later,

attempts to awaken him proved pointless, Christopher Smith, Handel’s script copyist, called for a doctor. When Dr. Jenkins arrived, Handel awoke and strode to the harpsichord where

Surely you must be possessed of the devil.” Handel gently corrected the physician saying, “I think that God has visited me.” It was Handel’s request that the first performance of the Messiah take place in Dublin, Ireland, where he believed financial receipts would be the most substantial. However, he made it clear that he did not wish to profit from

the piece. Instead, he stipulated the money be given to the care of prisoners, orphans and the sick. His explanation: “I have myself been a very sick man and am now cured. I was a prisoner and have been set free!” As rehearsals took place, word of the music’s beauty quickly spread through Dublin. So many tickets were sold that newspapers appealed for women concertgoers to remove the hoops from their skirts in order that more people could be seated. Likewise, gentlemen were asked to “come without their swords.” Audiences were overwhelmed by Handel’s work.

Encouraged by his success in Dublin, Handel returned to London where he was shocked to encounter fierce opposition to the Messiah. Before the London premiere was to take place on March 23, 1743, clergy organized to protest his work. Sermons were preached against the Messiah. For these clergy, Handel’s work was a sacrilege. They objected to Christian truths being mouthed by actors on a theater stage. The London performance of the Messiah was a dismal failure. Nevertheless, Handel, himself a very devout and spiritual person, persisted in presenting the Messiah. For several years it continued
