Through your generosity, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation helps the community thrive

The most generous among us aspire to giving with purpose, which is why so many trust the Greater Milwaukee Foundation as their partner in philanthropy. For more than a century, the Foundation has helped donors create and grow their own philanthropic funds to support the organizations and issues they value most. Further, the Foundation remains committed to addressing the most important challenges and opportunities affecting quality of life in greater Milwaukee, placing our donors and partners at the epicenter of efforts to enhance and advance the region. Generosity is one of our region’s greatest strengths. Metro Milwaukee ranks second among 16 comparable regions for both the percentage of adults who give to charity and who volunteer. Our area’s charitable giving rate of 65.3 percent and volunteer rate of 33.4 percent are far above the national averages, according to the Foundation’s Vital Signs study of quality of life indicators in our communities. Why are greater Milwaukeeans driven to generosity? Each reason is personal, but many donors say they have a strong desire to give back to the community that supported their professional success. Pick ’n Save, Milwaukee County and Save Fresh Picks Mobile Market, the grocery store on wheels that travels year-round, Monday through Friday, to neighborhoods and communities with limited access to fresh and healthy foods. It lets people in underserved neighborhoods, food deserts (defined by the American Nutrition Association as areas in which healthful fresh foods are more difficult to purchase because of a lack of grocery stores, farmers’ markets and healthy food providers), senior centers and other locations to purchase healthy and nutritious food at discounted prices. Hunger Task Force received a $100,000 federal Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentive grant, enabling it to offer a 25 percent discount. In addition, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation recently awarded the program a $20,000 grant. Along with other staples, the mobile market offers more than 40 seasonal fruits and vegetables and more than 10 high-demand meat and dairy items. Its high volume of meat sales makes a powerful point: People with limited access to grocery stores or with low incomes sometimes skip buying meat, an important source of protein. The market does not sell canned items or processed foods. Anyone can use the mobile market when it’s open for business, and its success shows.

2017 Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse

Saturday, June 3rd-Sunday, June 18th Now Celebrating Our 20th Anniversary!

Since 1998 WBCS has donated over $6.15 million to the Medical College of Wisconsin for promising breast cancer and prostate cancer research and to establish the WBCS Professor of Breast Cancer Research. WBCS is the largest annual donor to the MCW Cancer Center!

Each year, WBCS has been fortunate to find generous home owners who donate their home to WBCS for three months. Their entire home is transformed by the area’s top designers and together with the help of almost 1,000 volunteers, open the home to the public for two weeks. The two weeks of the Showhouse are highlighted by various events including the Raise a Glass to Hope Gala which will be June 3, four free lectures at the Showhouse covering such topics as local history, design and architecture, and Designer Sunday, June 4, when the designers are at the Showhouse to talk about the inspiration and challenges of their design space. All funds raised are donated to the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Research.

You can help support our mission and your own by advertising in our 2017 Program Book. This magazine is given to each showhouse attendee and almost 5,000 are given out each year.

Please contact Ellen Irion at 312.543.7967 or email her at 3005kenwood@live.com to reserve your advertising space for this program. Our advertising deadline is April 24, 2017.
