iceland When you go to Iceland, you could be forgiven for imagining you've just set foot on an alien planet. One of the most unique and beautiful places of all, Iceland presents a paradise for nature lovers. Steeped in history, home to a warm and welcoming people and forged by volcanoes, the land of fire and ice promises an unforgettable holiday for everyone, whether it’s the whole family or a lone adventurer. Geysers Geyser is actually an Icelandic word, and for good reason too. The country is home to some of the most famous geysers in the world, the most visited being Strokkur. This phenomenon is the result of surface water sinking into the ground to depths of thousands of feet where it comes into contact with magma and boils over, the pressure causing it to leap forth from the ground in a spectacular display. Although there are many geysers in Iceland, the most popular one to visit is Strokkur. It reliably erupts every five to ten minutes, the jet of boiling water reaching up to 130 feet. Strokkur is located in the Top Left: The Jökulsárlón glacier lake. Far left: Icelandic horses. Left: Spectacular geothermal eruption of The Great Geysir in the Haukadalur Valley. During periods of extremely high solar activity, such as major solar storms, the lights are at their most spectacular and may even be seen far to the south of Iceland as well. With a population of only 332,000, Iceland is rarely chaotic and it’s easy to get around, whether you’re hitchhiking, renting a car or even using the relatively limited public transport system. Fresh Seafood If you like fresh seafood, then Iceland has a smorgasbord of delights just waiting for you. As an island with relatively little grazing pasture, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that the Icelanders have perfected their maritime cuisine. Visit any market, and you’ll see a vast range of fresh fish including everything from squid to shark. Other local delicacies include delicious fresh seafood chowders and dried and salted fish–the seafood equivalent to beef jerky. Stories and Spirit “I think the most unique aspect of a Shen Yun performance,” explains principal dancer Miranda Zhou-Galati, “is that it has a very strong message of hope, which is something that really touches the audience’s hearts.” A broad range of theatergoers—from award-winning actors and musicians to political and business leaders—agree. It’s not rare to see audience members wiping tears from their cheeks during a performance. Incredibly, stories that have stirred people for thousands of years are still touching today. “It’s absolutely beautiful,” said Academy Award-winning production designer for Avatar, Robert Stromberg, after seeing the show in Los Angeles. “It was so inspiring. Volcanos If you visit Iceland, you can literally stand with one foot in America and the other in Europe. This is because the country is situated right on top of the fault line known as the mid-Atlantic ridge, which separates the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. It’s this very fact that gives Iceland it’s most unique and spectacular scenery due to the intense volcanic activity caused by being located right on the boundary. As a result of rampant volcanic activity, including recent eruptions like that of Eyjafjallajökull in 2010 and Bárðarbunga in 2014, Iceland’s landscape could be described as quite apocalyptic. Much of the country is covered by lava fields, some of which are created flat and smooth while others are characterized by sharp and jagged surfaces. God’s corner b y G e r t r u d e M . Pu e l i c h e r

Sir James Barrie, famous Scottish dramatist who combined fantasy and realism with a whimsical humor that endeared him to readers and audiences alike, once said, “The reason birds fly, and we can’t, is simply that they have perfect faith; for to have perfect faith is to have wings.” Isn’t it sad that we in America have permitted our wings to be clipped, and we can no longer fly. We have lost faith in everything worthwhile—in government, in people, in one another, in the importance of the home, in the existence of a loving God. We have lost faith in all that for which America stands—freedom of the individual to achieve to the limit of his capacity coupled with reliance upon the Spirit within us, thus making our understanding the result of the Almighty’s inspiration. Technological progress has conditioned us so thoroughly that we live in awe of its effect upon the industrial arts. We forget, and as a result neglect, the vital importance of spiritual progress. We have become so accustomed to scientific blueprints that we repudiate that which we cannot see, read, or analyze statistically. Webster defines faith as a belief in God, a rather elementary definition as compared with that of Paul the Apostle. He told the Hebrews, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen,” a definition of little interest to the intellectual world of the social and natural sciences. Yet, if one analyzes it, can knowledge exist as a verity without faith? Is knowledge belief, or is knowledge conviction? Is belief faith, or is conviction faith? The prince of Old Testament prophets, Isaiah, realized the importance of wings. Perhaps in his spare time he had been a bird watcher. Perhaps he had marveled at the courage of birds which flew despite whatever strong winds were blowing. He realized that “to have perfect faith is to have wings.” Because Isaiah had perfect faith, he exerted a strong influence in his time. It was Isaiah who made the pronouncement, “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Let us turn the page in this new year and determine to wait upon the Lord in perfect faith. Then we shall find that we again have wings. Wings like eagles, strong wings, that lift us from the dullness of materialism to the joyousness of spiritual faith. 28

it with you by showing you around and helping you make the most out of your visit. What’s more is that most people, especially younger people, speak very good English and will be happy to help you whether you’re looking for directions or even a lift to the nearest town. With a population of only 332,000, Iceland is rarely chaotic, and it’s easy to get around, whether you’re hitchhiking, renting a car or even using the relatively limited public transport system. Customer service is invariably impeccable, even in places that could be considered tourist traps. It’s also one of the world’s safest countries, being almost devoid of violent crime. Waterfalls Owing to its dramatic mountainous and volcanic landscape, Iceland is home to many magnificent waterfalls as well as the cleanest, clearest water in the

fact, day trips often include a visit to Gullfoss, Geysir and Þingvellir. Gullfoss is a truly thunderous waterfall that plummets around a hundred feet into a narrow gorge. It is particularly stunning in the winter, when it’s also surrounded by huge ice formations. The contrast of electric blue colours and crystalline white make for the perfect photo opportunity. However, if you’re looking for something a little more off the beaten track, Bruarfoss in southwest Iceland is also very picturesque. Iceland might have a reputation of being
