FOR MANY PEOPLE, November heralds the beginning of a celebratory season of giving thanks. Shorter, cooler daylight hours signal a move toward contemplative introspection, a chance to step back from life’s hectic pace to reflect on deeper goals. While some of these goals may involve personal dreams, others involve connection to a larger community. Donald Driver is familiar with both giving and being thankful, and has defined his life by charting a course aimed at helping others, especially those facing less fortunate circumstances. Many of us are familiar with Donald Driver through his role as wide receiver for Wisconsin’s well-loved professional football team, the Green Bay Packers. Driver retired from that position in January 2013, but his celebrity-level popularity has continued and includes a winning stint on the hit television show “Dancing with the Stars” in 2012. As a young person, though, Driver was familiar with hardship. During his youth, Driver faced poverty and homelessness as one in a large single-parent family. Despite these challenges, Donald Driver held firm to his hope for a better future. An opportunity opened to him when he joined the Green Bay Packers, and Driver’s hard work and determination helped solidify the aspects of success he enjoys today. Driver’s determination propelled him through these challenging times, and now he uses his own success as a vehicle to reach out to help those in need. In 2001, Driver and his wife Betina started the Donald Driver Foundation. The foundation mission, as described on its website, is to “display Strong Hands, Strong Minds, and Loving Hearts 8

proud of our association with him,” Boelter said. Goodwill touches the lives of many people, and the organization provides a variety of opportunities that benefit individuals, their families, and the larger community. Cheryl Lightholder, Manager of Communications at the Goodwill Center for Work and Training− Southwest Campus explains: “Goodwill is a diverse nonprofit community organization that provides training, employment and supportive services for people with disabilities or disadvantages who seek greater independence. This mission—nearly 100 years strong—strengthens individuals, families and communities.” Goodwill is an ever-evolving program, working to match the changing needs of its diverse communities. One such change has been a successful move of numerous individuals with disabilities from an original facility-based model of employment toward community-based jobs. Lightholder explains: “This focus was fueled by our belief that every person with a disability who wants to work in the community should have the option and the supports necessary to be successful in that work. After all, work provides more than a paycheck. Employment for all of us affords selfesteem, a chance to cultivate individual talents

DECORATING HOLIDAY DECORATING STARTS with an individual inspiration. Whether you are creating a tabletop display or creating wreaths or garlands you must remember to layer textures, colors and heights. The picture of this classic cream chest depicts all of the above. Neutral tones of cream, beige, and gold are crisp and accent the mixed pine branches. Holiday decorating does not have to have a high price tag. Be creative and use what you have by swapping out pillows, throws and even artwork. Heirloom ornaments are another way to dazzle tables, vases and wine glasses. Move your furniture pieces around to create conversation groupings for guests stopping by. Incorporate quality artificial foliage if getting fresh greens are not in your budget every year. Garlands that are lush will warm up banisters and mantels or even serve as a tabletop for your holiday table. Christmas decorating is a welcome chance to show off what you have collected through the years. Key Pieces does holiday consults. exploring bayeux normandy

Stephen James

NESTLED WITHIN THE tranquil countryside of western Normandy, the little French town of Bayeux makes for a compelling day trip, thanks largely to it being steeped in history–both ancient and recent. At less than five miles inland from the English Channel, Bayeux is easily accessible from the major seaports and regional hubs of Caen and Cherbourg to the east and Le Havre and Saint-Malo to the west. The roads spanning the region are well-kept, have a low volume of traffic and are lined with residences and farmhouses advertising home-crafted produce for sale, from soft cheeses and fresh bread through to delicacies such as foie gras, and these make idea places to stop off along the journey. The town of Bayeux itself is a sleepy little haven with a pretty and surprisingly intact historic centre. Continued on page 18

Back in 1944 five beaches north and west of Bayeux, codenamed Gold, Juno, Sword, Omaha and Utah, were the disembarkment point of thousands upon thousands of British, American and Commonwealth troops in the D-Day Landings, the military operation to liberate France and ultimately the rest of Western Europe from the grip of the Nazis. These days it’s the tourists that disembark in their thousands, lured by the remnants of and memorials to the invasion that cost so many young lives.

At Arromanches-les-Bains, north of Bayeux, it’s still possible at low tide to see the remains of some of the hulking structures that formed the famous Mulberry Harbour, the artificial dock which the Allies constructed and floated across the English Channel in order to unload heavy equipment onto the French beaches to support the invading troops. Even with the little museum and scattered monuments in the form of vehicles, bomb shells, artillery guns and bunkers, it’s difficult to imagine this sleepy stretch of coastline being the site of so much carnage less than seventy years ago. In addition to the Mulberry Harbour, there is also a 360-degree cinema at Arromanches-les-Bains which shows affecting war documentaries. In the surrounds of Bayeux there are numerous impeccablytended war cemeteries, a visit to one of which is a sobering yet essential experience. The main D-Day sights are easily accessible by car, being clearly signposted; alternatively, you may instead wish to partake in an organized bus tour, the majority of which run from Bayeux to the primary D-Day sites of interest on a daily basis. The Tourist Information Office will be able to provide you with details of the schedule and pricing. As a day-trip destination, Bayeux is a rewarding experience on many levels, and has something to offer everyone, old and young. E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

wisdom figure. One of life’s most glorious experiences is that of turning tragedy into triumph. William Penn noted that suffering is often the prerequisite for success. “No pain, no balm; no thorns, no throne; no gall, no glory; no cross, no crown,” he wrote. At sixteen years of age Allison Jones has become a world-class skier even though she is missing a leg. The Colorado resident was born with a birth defect which left her as an above-the-knee amputee. When she was five, her mother got Allison hooked on skiing. At 16, she became one of the youngest members of the United States Disabled Ski Team. “I was picked the day before my (16th) birthday. Nice present, huh?” she said with delight. The lack of one leg has not prevented Allison from pursuing all sorts of athletic activity. “I’ll try any sport: rock climbing, swimming, running, high jumping. I also cycle with one foot…Last summer I competed in a major bike race against other girls who have both legs and actually beat another cyclist. I was so excited,” she added. Allison Jones’ personal philosophy can help others who are facing great challenges in life. “If I can do it, I’ll do it. If I can’t, I’ll just try harder,” she said. Is your cup half full or half empty? This perceptive question is a potent reminder that perspective is reality. What we see is what will be. If a great difficulty comes tumbling into our lives and we define it as a “catastrophe,” that is precisely what it will be. However, if we step back, detach ourselves slightly, then we can see possibilities and potentials not previously evident. The catastrophic view is that of a cup half empty. NOVEMBER 2017

There is a world of difference between the two views. “Attitudes are capable of making the same experience either pleasant or painful,” noted author John Powell. This Dutch saying is a reminder that patience is a vital skill. A small dose of patience can prevent us from making a big mistake, giving up prematurely, drifting off into hopelessness. Shakespeare wisely observed: “How poor are they who have not patience! What wound did ever heal but buy degrees.”

I just don’t know if I can make it,” she said. “You can,” the mother replied, “Just don’t give up—ever!” As her mother spoke those words Mary thought about the power of patience and remembered an inspiring and motivating moment out of her mother’s life. It took place years earlier one summer when Mary was 14. She and her friends spent most of their hot summer days at the local pool. One afternoon as she was sunning, her mother came to the pool and made her way up the diving board. The teen shared in amazement at her mother perched on the end of the high dive in her Wines by the Sample, Glass, Bottle or Batch. Then she jumped—feet first!” While that “dive” was not impressive, Mary’s mother continued coming to the pool most of the summer eventually working up her courage to dive headfirst. There were many noisy belly flops. Other swimmers and lifeguards cringed at the sound of the mother attempting to dive from the high board. One day toward the end of the summer, the mother crossed the hot concrete at the pool and again made her way up the high diving

A lifeguard cheered and a friend said to the teenager: “Wow, your mom’s great.” The memory of her mother’s patience and determination that summer empowered Mary to face her bereavement more courageously and hopefully. “Twenty years later I stood at another daunting turning point in life. WITH SEEMING confusion rampant, and unconstructive criticism the ready tool of subtle propaganda, the time has come for those of us whose strength is grounded in faith to stand steadfastly by our prayers. Thus, by our very calm may we prove the truth of our position. This is no time to quibble over creed or race. This is no time to consume energy in needless discussion, nor smatter intelligence in wasteful indecision. That which is negative has no value. The most powerful antidote in the universe to evil of any nature is a firm conviction that good alone is power, and good alone will endure. To the degree in which we make that knowledge a part of our being, to the degree in which we impart that knowledge to those less fortunate in their understanding, will we bring good into existence as a force that brooks no opposition. And only as we stand firmly by our prayers, steadfastly refusing to be dissuaded from our resolve, will the binding mesmerism of evil be routed. Thanksgiving brings with it a fullness of living—a luscious gold brown hue that casts a mellow light across harvested fields. To the casual observer, steeped in the gloom of the moment, that light may seem dimmed by the thunder of war planes and the roar of defense plants. Yet a seeming truth, accepted as it may be by thousands, it is not necessarily true. The light of Thanksgiving is not dimmed. It shines today with as rare effulgence as it shone 329 years ago when our forefathers laid aside personal ambition and individual creed for a singleness of purpose: to thank God for His blessings. They had prayed for a plentiful harvest. They had labored; and then stood by their prayers. So great was their reward that eventually, one day a year was set aside for a day of national Thanksgiving. Today criticism, resentment, political differences must again give away to a singleness of purpose. In the same fashion that Aaron and Hur stayed up the hands of Moses when they were heavy, so must we as a nation uphold the hands of our leaders that they may unflinchingly carry us through a world upheaval to a just peace designed for the good of all mankind. As we are strong, so do we make others strong. Let us not limit our power by dissipating our purpose. Let us rather, as a nation whose influence may be felt throughout the world, unite at this moment in a firm resolve to stand by our prayers and thank God for the blessings that are ours. Then only will we harvest the good that is plentiful. 30
