AT AURORA HEALTH CARE, research, patient care and fundraising are all driven by a passion to “put people first.” Patients seeking cutting-edge innovations in treatment options for specialty areas such as neuroscience, cancer and cardiovascular care turn to Aurora, a national leader in the by Anne Kaiser
quest to further improve the quality of health care. Aurora Health Care delivers top-notch health care services at over 90 locations in eastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. The system includes 15 hospitals and more than 70 pharmacies and 150 clinics, and serves over 1.2 million patients each year. A staff of 1,800 physicians and 33,000 caregivers provide care to diverse populations in millions of encounters annually, including some through its telehealth system. Aurora Health Care’s research system includes world-renowned researchers in the specialty areas of cancer, cardiovascular care, and neuroscience. All research is pursued with the aim of “improving the lives of the people Aurora serves” and “delivering innovations to provide the best possible care today, and to define the best care for tomorrow.” All research is aligned to topics with the greatest potential benefits to patients. Innovations guide much cutting-edge research at Aurora, such as the 1968 pioneering of a lifesaving procedure for heart attack victims known as coronary artery bypass grafting, or CABG, by Aurora physicians. Today, research frontiers include studies in areas such as arrhythmia care or the benefits of exercise for breast cancer survivors, facilitated by a triathlon training program. Aurora physicians and scientists are working to expand research into new areas of study, working innovatively on asthma care and women’s health. Clinical trials bring nationally noted research innovations to local populations. Aurora Health Care currently oversees more than 500 clinical trials, all of which focus on patient-centered research. Cristy GarciaThomas, President of Aurora Health Care Foundation and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, notes that “…because of the breadth and reach of our clinics and hospitals, we are one of 34 health care systems in the country to achieve special National Cancer Institute designation (NCORP) to connect patients to national clinical trials for cancer care, close to home.”

Aurora physicians and researchers continually strive to improve existing treatments, forge pathways into new research territories, and collaborate to use shared expertise “to approach complex medical problems in new and exciting ways.” One such success story involves the transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR. In keeping with Aurora’s strong commitment to provide leading patient care in conjunction with world-class research and innovations, the 2017 Gala theme will be Transforming Innovative Research into Extraordinary Care. Expert event planner David Caruso of Dynamic Events will work with Aurora to transform the Bradley Center “from an arena, to an exquisite event venue,” Rath said. The 2017 Aurora Gala promises to be an informative and delightful evening for guests. During a reception, guests can enjoy interactive exhibits or “Innovation Stations” highlighting the dynamic interplay between Aurora’s innovative, patient-centered research initiatives and collaborating partners, physicians and scientists. “Gala guests will see and experience firsthand the interactive display to discover new research and learn about the latest and most advanced technologies, tools and procedures available at Aurora Health Care,” Rath said. Guests at the Aurora Gala will be treated to a gourmet dinner presented by APN Health. While they dine, attendees will enjoy “an inspiring program featuring stories of transformational research and the impact these pioneering advancements have had on patients across the Aurora system,” Rath said. PUTTING PEOPLE FIRST Mr. Kritzik summarizes his experience: “I did encourage Aurora leadership to start strategic planning, to see where health care is going to be in five or more years. Well, they took the ball and ran with it.” Mr. Kritzik’s passion for positively impacting the lives of others through health care innovations shines through his work with Aurora Health Care. “I’m all for change, and the thing I’m most proud of is planting that seed,” Mr. Kritzik concluded. Community support—the involvement of dedicated individuals with a similar passion for driving positive change in health care and in the community—allows Aurora to further many of its health care advances. Donors are integral to the forward momentum of many positive programs, including those that work to provide better access to care for all individuals in the community; oncology services; Aurora’s in-home care program (Aurora at Home); programs that target behavioral health and addiction care; and those that support survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Aurora Health Care’s passion for people— for their care and support through the furthering of world-class research and ongoing health care innovations—is exemplified system-wide. Aurora is grateful to its donors, many of whom return year after year to offer support. Patrick Rath, Senior Vice President of Foundation Development at Aurora Health Care, explains: “Several are driven to transform health care for our community and create dedicated funds to address a particular disease or treatment innovation. The upper portion of the walls are accented with an intricate border in reds and golds. The gleaming white porcelain floor has black porcelain grout lines accented at each intersection with a solid gold mosaic tile. Of course, this grand entrance offers plenty of closet space for your guests. There is a powder room tucked under the first landing that is just as opulent as the foyer. It is stunningly executed all in black: black mosaic tile floor with solid gold accent tiles as well as black porcelain and a granite vanity top. The golden ceiling brightens this room and the result is nothing short of gorgeous. The east wing, to the right of the foyer, consists of three beautiful rooms which carry through them the same beautiful dark wood floors, which are found throughout the home, while retaining an elegant personality all their own. The neutrally-toned library is accented by richly finished wood around the windows and surrounding the handsome marble fireplace. A set of built-in bookcases finished off the room. Heading towards the lake side of the castle you come to the music room. This room is executed in elegant whites with dentil moldings, stencils and appliques. WHAT IS HAPPENING to America that we are failing to see the goodness of the Lord? For one thing, we are running the gamut of emotions. At the drop of a hat, dissent, condemnation, criticism crowd the news. Rational thinking is clogged. For another thing, “Where there is no vision, the people perish,” and America has lost its vision. There are no more geographical frontiers whose dangers must be overcome. There was once a unifying desire to progress westward. That goal has been accomplished. There are no new worlds to conquer. The first moon flight was an event extraordinaire. The last moon flight, for many, had lost its savor. “Not by might, nor by power but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” Is that where our problem lies? Have we taken affairs into our own hands by relying upon our humanhood to solve every problem? Have we forgotten that winning a war never establishes a permanent peace? Might and power may endure temporarily, but unless the Spirit of God is brought to bear upon every situation there can be no lasting harmony. When Job was complaining about all his afflictions and trying to justify himself to God, Elihu told him, “There is a spirit in man and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.” Hasn’t the time arrived for Americans to seek within themselves for the spiritual inspiration that alone can give them a right understanding in handling every situation? One wonders at times of what avail Christianity? Over two-thousand years of a supposed religion of love, and we are surrounded on every hand by conflict, resentment, hate, racism. Our country once enjoyed the distinction of leadership among nations. Today we are disjointed, disunited. We are turned upon ourselves. We have lost our moral footing. We have lost sight of the importance of God. We are no longer tuned in to the spiritual. Fortunately for us, God offers us an opportunity to mend our ways if we are interested. In Micah we read, “But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains—and people shall flow into it—and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.” 30
