THERE ARE MANY THINGS visitors can do in Istanbul during a three-day trip to a city steeped in culture–a culture that is a perfect blend of the east and west. Spending a few days immersed amongst locals can be an exhilarating experience for young and old alike. Everything, from the food and museums to the friendly people and breathtaking views, heightens the senses and brings smiles to travelers from near and far. Spending three full days in this exotic city gives visitors time to get a glimpse of what life is like in Istanbul. Some must-see attractions during the visit include: The Basilica Cistern Commissioned by Emperor Justinian in 532, this subterranean structure was used as a cistern to store and transport water. It mainly serviced the Great Palace of the Byzantine emperors and its surrounding areas. Three hundred thirty-six columns are in place, most scavenged from ruined temples. The Basilica Cistern was such named because it sat under the Stoa Basilica at the time it was built. It stored

80,000 cubic metres of water, delivered from the Black Sea through 20 km of aqueducts. In 1985, the Basilica Cistern was renovated and in 1987, the public was invited in to see the interior. Today, it is a must-see stop when travelers are in Istanbul. The dark cistern, lit with the perfect amount of lighting just enough to be safe, brings about a mysterious mood as carp are seen swimming around and water is found dripping from the cavernous ceiling. The Basilica Cistern is in the Sultanahmet area. It is open from
9:00 am to 6:30 pm. Time to explore– roughly 1 hour once inside. The Blue Mosque Hands-down the most beautiful building in Istanbul, the Blue Mosque was a grand project of Sultan Ahmet I. His tomb can be found on the north side of the building facing Sultanahmet Park. The building features six sleek minarets and a waterfall of domes. Be sure to venture by the Blue Mosque at different times of day. It presents a different picture depending on the amount and direction of light.

The interior of the mosque is stunning, adorned with stained glass windows and Iznik tiles. Four stately posts hold up the central dome. The domes and semi-domes are painted with beautiful arabesques. Blue Mosque visitors are not allowed to enter through the main entrance of the building, which is reserved for worshippers only. A separate north entrance is available for those who want to take a peak inside. It is important to note that proper dress is required to enter the building. Women need to bring head scarves and make sure their shoulders are covered. It is important to wear long pants or skirts and dresses as well. Those who are too scantily dressed will be asked to borrow scarves and robes. Men need to make sure they are covered as well. It is best to avoid shorts and tank tops. The Blue Mosque is in the Sultanahmet area. It is open from 9:00 am to 12:15 pm, 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm, and 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm on Saturdays through Thursdays. On Fridays, the Blue Mosque is open from 9:00 am to 11:15 am, 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Time to explore– roughly 30 minutes once inside. Topkapi Palace Shortly after the Conquest, in 1453, Mehmet the Conqueror built the first phase of this palace. He lived there until his death in 1481. His predecessors lived there after his death, using the Topkapi Palace as their home until the 19th Century. During its use as the court of the Ottoman Empire, Topkapi Palace housed sultans, courtiers, concubines, and eunuchs. There are a number of pavilions, an Imperial Treasury, and a spacious Harem, giving visitors a clear picture of what life was like between the 15th and 19th Centuries. Once on the grounds of the palace, visitors can freely roam from pavilion to pavilion to see artifacts from the Ottoman Empire. The large “estate” housed up to 4,000 men, women, and children who rarely left the Topkapi Palace grounds. They depended on couriers to bring them news of the outside world. The Topkapi Palace is in the Sultanahmet are. It is open from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on Wednesdays through Mondays (mid-April September). The palace closes at 4:00 pm from October to mid-April. The Harem is open until 4:30 pm from April through October and 3:30 pm from November to March. Time to explore– roughly 3 hours once inside. E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

Aya Sofya (Hagia Sophia, Sancta Sophia, Church of the Devine Wisdom) Consecrated as a church in 537 by Justinian, the Aya Sofya was converted to a mosque by Mehmet the Conqueror in 1453. In 1935, Ataturk declared the building a museum, which is how it is used today. The architecture in the Aya Sofya is incredible. The cavernous interior is extremely ornate, filled with a rich history, religious significance, and breathtaking beauty. The original mosaics that adorned the building during Justinian’s church days can be seen in some areas. When Aya Sofya was converted into a mosque, however, the mosaics were deemed inappropriate and covered with plaster. Luckily, the mosaics were not destroyed, allowing some of them to be restored. Today, Ottoman medallions, seraph figures, and gorgeous domes can be found inside Aya Sofya along with Ottoman tombs. The building continues to undergo restoration for people to get a closer glimpse of what life was like centuries ago. The Aya Sofya is in the Sultanahmet area. It is open from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on Tuesday
through Sunday (mid-April to September). It closes at 4:00 pm from October to mid-April. Time to explore–roughly 2.5 hours once inside.
It’s also important for travelers to spend some time with the locals, getting to know their way of life. The Turkish people are extremely friendly and enjoy sharing their culture, where east truly meets west. Spice Bazaar Colorful, fragrant spices can be found in abundance at the Spice Bazaar alongside lokum or Turkish delight. This Ottoman-era bazaar draws tourists and locals alike, as they wander up and down the aisles filling their senses with endless stimulation. In addition to the typical spices and large varieties of Turkish delight, shoppers can find honey in the comb, nuts, dried fruits and herbs, as well as caviar. Over the years, vendors have added tourist trinkets in the bazaar, moving away from just selling edibles to other items. The Spice Bazaar was originally built as part of the New Mosque, with its profits from sales and events used to support the upkeep of the
religious building. The money made in sales at the bazaar was used to help build and sustain a hospital, school, and hamam (bath). The Spice Bazaar is in the Bazaar District area. Stalls are open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm on Mondays through Saturdays. On Sundays, stalls are open from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Time to explore–1 hour. Shopaholics may need more time. Grand Bazaar Located in the heart of the old city, the Grand Bazaar is always humming with vendors and visitors. Built under the order of Mehmet the Conqueror in 1461, the Grand Bazaar grew to cover a rather large area. Today, it is roofed and contains lane after lane of goods ranging from fabric and jewelry to souvenirs and food. Many people think it is very difficult to navigate the Grand Bazaar. It is, however, easier than most think. The goods sold in the Bazaar are presented in sections, allowing for easier movement through the maze of stalls and vendors. For example, silk and cashmere can be found in the same region of the Bazaar, which is separate from the area where visitors can purchase jewelry. Continued on page 28

The much-desired main floor master suite is classic and understated. The warm, comfortable hues of the walls are pleasingly complimented by cheery trim. At twenty by fifteen feet, it offers room for both a large bed and a cozy sitting area. Walking past the spacious his and hers walk in closets takes you to the large, spa-like master bath which features stunning marble with its beautiful sunset hues. A large, jetted tub, dual cherry
vanities, trayed ceiling and spacious double shower make this room complete. A large, executive office/library rounds off the main floor with its ample built-in cabinetry wood-paneled wainscoting and large windows features its own attached full bath and provides a perfect home office. The second floor with its large upper landing overlooking both foyer and great room is accessed by either the main stairs or the private home elevator. It is home to three of the home’s four generous bedrooms as well as two full baths. Each bedroom is bright with expansive windows and large closets. The lower level completes this amazing home. The walk-out family area features ceramic tile floors and a classic cobblestone fireplace, full wet bar/kitchenette, gaming and workout areas as well as built-in cabinetry for storage and AV equipment. But, this is only a room for “informal” TV watching. When you are in the mood to watch the latest release of a Hollywood blockbuster, the custom built theater room, which is specifically designed to optimize sound quality and large, projection TV system is the place to be! There is plenty of
room here to host a screening party or to just cozy up and enjoy a beloved film. The details don’t end with this home, even the well-lit garage is drywalled with built-in cabinetry, has its own access to the lower level and is beyond pristine. It is almost as if a car was never even parked here. But, this is indicative of the care with which this proud home was built and maintained. It is not a leap to judge the quality and impeccable maintenance of this home by this simple, humble area. This gorgeous home and lot are part of a larger estate of just over 120 acres which are available separately or may be included in a purchase for a nominal cost. This property has it all–classic architecture, impeccable build-quality, high-tech entertainment, luxurious appointments, beautiful yard plus the opportunity to create your own private compound in the highly sought-after Village of Chenequa. Upgrade Your
OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE n n n
AUGUST 2019
TRANSFORMING YOUR BACKYARD into a true extension of your home’s living space is a relatively easy way to add usable square footage and increase enjoyment of your home. Making outdoor upgrades is also a scalable project, meaning you can do as little or as much as your budget allows and continue enhancing the space over time. Start planning how you’ll create a backyard paradise with these ideas from the experts at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI): Living Space Living rooms and kitchens are among the most popular choices for upgrading a patio space. This approach allows you to take entertaining outdoors with a welcoming environment that blends the comforts of indoor
spaces with the ability to appreciate the sights and sounds of the outdoors. Comfy seating is a must, but beyond that the options are nearly endless. You might install a grilling station or even a full kitchen setup that offers the same benefits of an open floorplan indoors. You could add a fireplace for character and warmth, and even integrate a pizza oven if your family enjoys a cheesy homemade pie. A bar puts refreshing beverages in easy reach, while a water feature lends to a calming ambiance. Before you get started, narrow down the many choices by defining how you want to use the space. Know whether your goal is to create a relaxing retreat, add entertaining space or work in another function that fits your family’s needs.

Entertainment Creating an indoor setting outside can also mean bringing comfort elements like entertainment outdoors. Typical outdoor entertainment technologies include music and speaker systems, lighting, all-weather televisions and theater systems. Speaker systems are becoming more invisible as they blend into the landscaping as rocks or planters.

However, not all outdoor products are able to withstand all weather conditions. For example, some products are marketed for indoor and outdoor use, but they’re not constructed to withstand extreme temperatures all year. Do your research to ensure your products are appropriate for your environment. Remodelers should also be mindful of placement of the speaker systems, so as not to disturb the neighbors and to maximize enjoyment for the homeowner. Functional Features Entertainment aside, there are some options for upgrading your backyard space that are as practical as they are enjoyable. For example, adding paved walkways lends both aesthetic appeal and a clear path for traveling from one section of the yard to the next. This is especially advantageous for high-traffic areas, where frequent trips might otherwise damage the lawn. The material can either complement or match the surface of a finished patio space, particularly if you choose an option like stone or pavers. Other functional features you might consider include fire pits, which can lend warmth on a cool day, and lush vegetation, which can contribute both character and shade to the space. If you live in an especially warm region, installing a cooling mist system can extend the usability of your area well into summer. When it comes to customizing your space, particularly if it’s smaller, you can get creative with clever multi-purpose features like benches with built-in planters and tables with hidden drink wells for icing down beverages. The Grand Bazaar is in the Bazaar District. Stalls are open from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm on Mondays through Saturdays. Time to explore– 2 hours. Shopaholics may need more time. The Bosphorus A trip to Istanbul is not complete without a cruise along the Bosphorus. There are a few options for visitors who are interested in seeing Istanbul from the water. The trips range from 90 minutes to three hours, depending on how much of the Bosphorus is explored. The Bosphorus Strait is Turkey’s major thoroughfare. Merchants, travelers, and tourists, alike, travel up and down the waterway daily. At times, it can get rather crowded on the waters. As people travel along the strait, they can see some of the famous palaces and grand buildings along the waterline, along with an endless number of buildings that are seemingly stacked one on top of the other. Ferries are available and can be found shuttling people across the Bosphorus. The most common ones that visitors enjoy include: Kanlica to Emirgan–departing at 1:05 pm, 4:05 pm, and 5:20 pm. Emirgan to Kanlica and Bebek - departing at 4:15 pm. Anadolu Kavagi to Sariyer - departing throughout the day from 7:15 am to 11:00 pm. Those interested in crossing the Bosphorus on a ferry can find more information near the Galata Bridge. Tourists who wish to see the Bosphorus on a private excursion boat can also do so. The boats are usually smaller and can travel closer to the shoreline as a result. Turyol boats leave from the western side of the Galata Bridge every hour from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm on weekdays and every 45 minutes on the weekends. If time permits, it is also interesting to sail along the Golden Horn, north of the Galata Bridge. This gives visitors a glimpse of Istanbul’s working class. Time to explore–up to 3 or 4 hours. Istanbul in Three Days With only three days in Istanbul, narrowing down the attractions can be difficult. The sights listed above are not-to-be-missed for any visitor traveling to the exotic city. In addition to the sights, it is also important for travelers to stop for a moment and spend some time with the locals, getting to know their way of life. The Turkish people are extremely friendly and enjoy sharing their culture with those who take the time to visit Istanbul, where east truly meets west. n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

GOD’S CORNER by Ger trude M. Puelicher n n n

DO YOU KNOW why the Old Testament leaders reached spiritual heights? They believed steadfastly and with childlike faith in the power of God. Theirs was not a blind faith; it was the faith of a child for its parents. A child doesn’t wonder whether his father or mother loves him; he knows within himself that he is loved so he neither analyzes nor questions. So was it with the patriarchs. They accepted God’s love and care as a rightful heritage, and they relied unswervingly upon the omnipotence of God. To those who would scoff in these days of pseudoreligious sophistication at the power of a child-like faith, I quote the Nazarene carpenter: “Unless ye become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Nehemiah, Jewish cupbearer to the Persian king, desolate at the ruins into which Jerusalem had fallen, begged permission to return to his own land. He went back as ruler of Judah, rallied the people, and in only 52 days the great wall around Jerusalem was rebuilt. How did he accomplish such a task? By his complete reliance upon the omnipotence of God. His prayer was, “Oh God, strengthen my hands,” and then he rested in the conviction that God was strengthening his hands and the security of Jerusalem
would be assured. And so it was during the remainder of Nehemiah’s reign. Hezekiah was an aggressive leader who was determined to free Judah from Assyrian domination. He instigated a religious revival, got rid of pagan idols and cleansed the temple. The biggest project he conceived was the building of a tunnel from the spring of Gihon to a reservoir inside the city thus preventing an enemy from cutting off Jerusalem’s water supply. When the king of Assyria threatened, Hezekiah told his people, “Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed...for there be more with us than with him; with him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God.” Jehoshaphat, another king of Judah, said to the frightened people, “Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord.” And in each of these instances, the enemy was routed. So would it be with us, were we to stand still, and rest in the assurance of God’s constant presence and power as well as in God’s desire to reward our faith. We, too, can reach spiritual heights, but only when we rely completely upon the omnipotence and omnipresence of God, only when we lean back confidently on God’s love and let it enfold us. n
