IN DECEMBER OF 1914, Thomas Alva Edison’s laboratory was virtually destroyed by a massive fire. Although the damage exceeded $2 million—an enormous sum at the turn of the century—the buildings were only insured for $238,000 because they were made of concrete and believed to be fireproof. Most of Edison’s life, work, plans, drawings, and experiments went up in spectacular flames that December evening. At the height of the fire, Edison’s 24-yearold son, Charles, frantically searched for his father among the smoke and debris. He finally found him, calmly watching the scene, his face glowing in the reflection, his white hair blowing in the wind. “My heart ached for him,” Charles said. “He was 67— no longer a young man—and everything was going up in flames. When he saw me, he shouted, ‘Charles, where’s your mother?’ When I told him I didn’t know, he said. ‘Find her. Bring her here. She will never see anything like this as long as she lives.’” The next morning, Edison looked at the ruins and made this remarkable statement to his son: “There is great value in disaster. All our mistakes are burned up. Thank God we can start anew.” Three weeks after the fire, Edison managed to deliver his first phonograph.

Edison’s inspiring response to tragedy is an excellent example of the truth in this Spanish proverb: If your house is on fire, warm yourself by it. That statement succinctly conveys the wisdom that adversity, properly perceived, can be transformed into advantage; that misfortune can be used as the raw material to fuel a renewed and vigorous motivation. Along with that Spanish proverb, our culture has many other words of wisdom which can guide us through all sorts of personal and professional difficulties. Here are some other times—and timely—words of wisdom to draw on when life’s journey is difficult and discouraging. When the mind can conceive, then will can achieve. The fact is that all things have their beginning in a vision or mental picture. Those who see themselves as succeeding are generally the ones who succeed. Tijuana, Mexico, is one of the toughest cities in the world. It has more than its share of dirt, noise, pollution, corruption, drugs and crime. Nevertheless, hundreds of people make their way from all over Mexico to this rapidly growing cosmopolitan center weekly. The reason: Tijuana is Mexico’s city of opportunity,

a magnet for those seeking to improve their lives and fulfill their dreams. One who made her way to Tijuana, as a 19-year-old is Monica Garcia. She came in order to attend Medical School. Her own resilience and attitude have opened doors to her in spite of crushing poverty and hardship. Her father abandoned her when she was 15. She got a job, worked eight hours a day, remained in high school and won a scholarship to study medicine. “Always, always, always,” she explained, “when I was little, I would go by the university and say, ‘One
day I will be there,’ Now I am actually there,” she said with a smile. Learn from your mistakes. That simple proverb has been a guiding credo for many highly creative and successful individuals. Thomas Watson, the former chairman who helped develop IBM from a small business machine company into one of the world’s largest computer corporations, said: “Double your rate of failure. Failure is a teacher—a harsh one, but the best.” And, Ann Richards, former governor of Texas noted: “One of the most valuable lessons I learned is that we all have to learn from our mistakes

and we learn from those mistakes a lot more than we learn from the things we succeeded in doing.” The lesson for living: our mistakes, blunders, slip-ups are fertile ground from which new insights and strengths emerge. So important is the principle of learning from mistakes that Economist Kenneth Ewart Boulding declared: “Nothing fails like success because we don’t learn from it. We learn only from failure.” Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it. Those words of wisdom come from Helen Keller who was blinded and deafened as a child, yet graduated from college, became a best-selling author and world-renown inspirational figure. One of life’s most glorious experiences is that of turning tragedy into triumph. William Penn noted that suffering is often the prerequisite for success. “No pain, no balm; no thorns, no throne; no gall, no glory; no cross, no crown,” he wrote. At sixteen years of age Allison Jones has become a world-class skier even though she is missing a leg. The Colorado resident was born with a birth defect which left her as an above-the-knee amputee. When she was five, her mother got Allison hooked on skiing. At 16, she became one of the youngest members of the United States Disabled Ski Team. “I was picked the day before my (16th) birthday. Nice present, huh?” she said with delight. The lack of one leg has not prevented Allison from pursuing all sorts of athletic activity. “I’ll try any sport: rock climbing, swimming, running, high jumping. I also cycle with one foot...Last summer I competed in a major bike race against other girls who have both legs and actually beat another cyclist. I was so excited,” she added. Allison Jones’ personal philosophy can help others who are facing great challenges in life. “If I can do it, I’ll do it. If I can’t, I’ll just try harder,” she said. Is your cup half full or half empty? This perceptive question is a potent reminder that perspective is reality. What we see is what will be. If a great difficulty comes tumbling into our lives and we define it as a “catastrophe,” that is precisely what it will be. However, if we step back, detach ourselves slightly, then we can see possibilities and potentials not previously evident. The catastrophic view is that of a cup half empty. The detached view is that of a cup half full. There is a world of difference between the two views. “Attitudes are capable of making the same experience either pleasant or painful,” noted author John Powell. A handful of patience is worth more than a bushel of brains. This Dutch saying is a reminder that patience is a vital skill. A small dose of patience can prevent us from making a big mistake, giving up prematurely, drifting off into hopelessness. Shakespeare wisely observed: “How poor are they who have not patience! What wound did ever heal but buy degrees.” Consider the dilemma of Mary Zemites of Mesa, Arizona. After her husband died and she was left to raise their three young children alone she cried out to her mother: “Mom, it’s so hard without Greg. Could I be both mother and father to the kids? What did life hold for us? I just don’t know if I can make it,” she said. “You can,” the mother replied, “Just don’t give up—ever!” As her mother spoke those words Mary thought about the power of patience and remembered an inspiring and motivating moment out of her mother’s life. It took place years earlier one summer when Mary was 14. She and her friends spent most of their hot summer days at the local pool. One afternoon as she was sunning, her mother came to the pool and made her way up the diving board. The teen shared in amazement at her mother

perched on the end of the high dive in her one-piece swimsuit. “I could tell she was scared. Mom stood there for an eternity. Then she jumped—feet first!” While that “dive” was not impressive, Mary’s mother continued coming to the pool most of the summer eventually working up her courage to dive headfirst. There were many noisy belly flops. Other swimmers and lifeguards cringed at the sound of the mother attempting to dive from the high board. One day toward the end of the summer, the mother crossed the hot concrete at the pool and again made her way up the high diving board. “With a small bounce, she launched herself upwards. She made a graceful arc in midair, then straightened and slipped into the water with hardly a ripple. A perfect dive!” Mary recalled. A lifeguard cheered and a friend said to the teenager: “Wow, your mom’s great.” The memory of her mother’s patience and determination that summer empowered Mary to face her bereavement more courageously and hopefully. “Twenty years later I stood at another daunting turning point in life. I knew the future would not be easy for my children or me, and there would probably be plenty of painful belly flops along the way. But I remember that summer at the pool.” Patience is a critical tool for coping when life deals us a harsh blow. Through patience a mother overcame fear and learned to dive. Through patience a grieving young widow learned to deal with her bereavement. “Little strokes fell great oaks,” observed Benjamin Franklin. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try and try again. This statement has bee heard by most children as they have struggled with a particularly difficult school assignment. The popularity of this saying stems from its inherent wisdom, that persistence is productive. One of the most amazing examples of this persistence principle comes from Sue Whiting of Woking, England. In 1964, when she was 17, she took a driving course in order to gain a driver’s license. She didn’t do well so she signed up for more driving instructions. During an early lesson she stopped suddenly and another car smashed into them. On another occasion, she recalled, “During a driving test I hit the brakes so hard that the examiner’s false teeth shot out of his mouth.” Finally, Sue Whiting found a female driving instructor with whom she studied for four years! Eventually—22 years after she began her driving lessons—Sue earned her driver’s license. FOLLOWING A YEAR OF CHALLENGES, people everywhere can derive inspiration from the examples of courage, perseverance, and determination seen throughout our Southeastern Wisconsin communities. While some individuals and organizations have recently stepped forward to nurture the overall wellbeing of communities here, others have offered longstanding bases of human talent, creative opportunity, and chances to brighten and enrich the lives of others. One of these outstanding organizations, the Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts (OFA), reached its 50th year of operation during 2020. While the navigation of this challenging year forced the OFA to cancel its August 2020 festival, the milestone anniversary nonetheless brought great honors to this well-loved event. On February 25, 2020, the Oconomowoc Chamber Orchestra conferred the Chatfield Award on the Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts. In the past, this award has been given only to individuals in the community, rather than organizations. The selection of OFA as the first organization to receive the award marked a special and significant occasion and an exceptional tribute to the OFA in its 50th year. August 18, 2020 marked an additional significant point in the celebration of the OFA’s 50th year. City of Oconomowoc Mayor Robert Magnus and the Oconomowoc Common

Council jointly proclaimed the third week of August, prior to the third weekend in August, “Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts Week.” As part of this public declaration of the city’s appreciation of the OFA, the mayor additionally “urge(d) all citizens to recognize the cultural value that the Festival has brought to the community over the last 50 years.” Finally, Mayor Magnus and the City Council presented to the OFA the Key to the City of Oconomowoc. No other person or organization has ever received this honor, according to Mayor Magnus’ research. 2020 President of the OFA Hollie Schick stated, “It has been my great honor and privilege to serve as the president of Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts in a most unusual year.” Originally founded in 1970, the Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts first operated out of Oconomowoc’s Zion Episcopal Church. The festival has enjoyed use of its current location at lovely Fowler Park, on the shore of Oconomowoc’s Fowler Lake, since 1974. Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts showcases the high-quality fine artwork of artists working in diverse media. With works in categories ranging from jewelry to ceramics,
photography to painting and more, the festival draws enthusiastic art patrons and families each season. Artists are granted awards in each media category, including a Best of Show Award, by two judges, with judging for the show completed by a panel of judges. Many of the festival’s 135 exhibit spaces are filled by longtime exhibitors. The Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts occurs annually on the third weekend in August. This year’s festival will be held August 21 and 22, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day, rain or shine, outdoors in Oconomowoc’s Fowler Park. Admission to the festival is free, and visitors can enjoy live music and dance performances on three stages, a children’s activity area, and refreshments from food vendors, in addition to browsing the quality selection of beautiful artwork. n

We learned to look at how the interior and exterior of the home connect to each other to make sure the features and floor plan flow and work well together. Then, and only then, will you know if it matches your budget. We would recommend doing your research when taking on a pool project of any size. REGARDLESS OF ONE’S INTERPRETATION of the Bible, at all times but particularly in times of duress, there are Bible verses that bring comfort. One such verse is found in Psalm 121, “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help.” We have no need to move out of our chairs to do this. We need merely close our eyes for a second and let our thoughts lift themselves. You may hesitate to believe that is a possibility, but take my word for it. Just sit comfortably in your chair, close your eyes, and relax in those words, “I will lift mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help,” and almost immediately you will find yourself being flooded with peace—peace that really comes from within yourself, comforting serenity that can mean only one thing—God is on the field, God is taking over. Gradually you will have a sense of not needing to struggle with a problem or battle with a neighbor or compete with an associate. You will find yourself really resting in the security of God’s presence, and if you take time for it, you will actually be able to feel that Presence. We have grown so accustomed to pushing buttons and keys in this digital age that there are those who expect they can push a button and presto, chango, there is God-power or God-presence operating in their behalf.
What a blessing it is that no paternalistic government can legislate God for us. Anti-poverty programs may be legislated; federal aid may be legislated; even war may be legislated; yet all this legislation humanly planned may just as quickly and humanly be rescinded by legislation, but not God. God is completely immune from legislation of any kind, and just as “before Abraham was I am” so will it be unto eternity. The Creative Principle of the universe is untouchable by man or man-made laws simply because God is law. As a result, all unfoldment of God understanding is completely individual.
