BEING A BETTER

WHILE ON AN EARLY MORNING WALK, the Buddha encountered a young man named Sigala. The two men engaged in a conversation that became a Buddhist text called the Sigalovada Sutta. During their talk, the Buddha stressed the importance of carefully, thoughtfully choosing good friends, saying: “Young man, know these four goodhearted friends: the helper, the friend who endures in good times and bad, the mentor, and the compassionate friend.”

Not only does this teaching of the Buddha provide instruction on what kind of friends to select and surround ourselves with, but more importantly, it provides guidance on how to be a better friend. And, in our current culture, friendship is highly welcomed because an increasing number of people feel alone. This condition is worldwide and is so serious that the British government appointed a Minister of Loneliness to help combat this growing mental health issue.

Here is how to be a better friend ...

Be a Helping Friend

“The helper can be identified by four things: by protecting you when you are vulnerable, and likewise your wealth, being a refuge when you are afraid, and in various tasks providing double what is requested,” is the Buddha’s first advice.

An example of giving “double what is requested” is related by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, author of The Book Of Jewish Values. He tells about a couple visiting with an elderly friend. It quickly became clear the friend was suffering from horrendous back pain. The woman asked him if there was any medication that could relieve the pain.

“There is, but it costs $60 and I can’t afford it,” he said honestly. Before he left that evening, the woman gave the elderly man a $1,000 check, and suggested he immediately buy the medicine. Her husband did not object but was curious why she gave him such a large amount when $60 would have been enough. Her answer: “If he is in such pain and still is not buying the medication, it must mean he lacks money for other things as well.”

Be an Enduring Friend

“The enduring friend can be identified by four things: by telling you secrets, guarding your own secrets closely, not abandoning you in misfortune, and even dying for you,” is the Buddha’s second guidance. He is referring to the friend who stands by you and with you in all of your life circumstances. A loyal friend is reliable, trustworthy, unconditional, and always has your back. Because of him or her, you never feel completely alone.

Be a Mentoring Friend

“The mentor can be identified by four things: by restraining you from wrongdoing, guiding you towards good actions, telling you what you ought to know, and showing you the path to the heavens,” is the Buddha’s third instruction. This statement refers to the importance of being a spiritual friend, something the Buddha said was of utmost importance.

It was a teaching he stressed to Ananda, his personal assistant. While conversing one day, Ananda said to the Buddha: “Am I correct in believing that having good spiritual friends, companions to accompany me on this journey and associating with such persons, is half of the path?” The Buddha responded with a correction: “No Ananda! It is not half the path is fully the path—spiritual friendship, association with good people and their company.”

It was a spiritual friend who literally saved the life of singer Tina Turner. Her life was extremely challenging. Her mother left her when she was 11; her father left her when she was 13; and then she lived with a grandmother who died when she was 16. Turner married a man who physically and emotionally abused her for more than a decade.

Her life was so chaotic and unhappy that she made a suicide attempt. In 1974, when she was 34 years of age, a friend suggested Turner try meditation, specifically a style of meditation practiced by Nichiren Buddhists, whose practice is chanting this simple mantra: Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

As a musician, the idea of chanting meditation appealed strongly to her. Turner began practicing

in the privacy of her home, recalling: “When I first learned about it, I liked the fact that the practice offered me a simple, practical formula for happiness.” Soon she discovered that this meditation practice brought her not only awareness and insight, but power to change her life. “Little by little, it brought out my courage to break away and live an independent life on my own.” She was able to leave her abusive husband and develop her own musical career.

“I have never separated my spiritual practice from my life as a rock singer. When I was going through the hardest times of my life, I was chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. Chanting helped me and changed my life for the better. I’ve left a good body of work as a rock singer, and I’ve made it very clear that it was because of my spiritual practice,” she says. None of that would have been possible had it not been for the involvement of a spiritual friend.

Be a Compassionate Friend

“The compassionate friend can be identified by four things,” said the Buddha: “by not rejoicing in your misfortune, delighting in your good fortune, preventing others from speaking ill of you, and encouraging others who praise your good qualities.”

Author Wayne Dyer became just such a friend to spiritual teacher Ram Dass. Shortly after Ram Dass experienced a semi-paralyzing stroke that made him wheelchair bound in 1997, Dyer asked the thousands of regular readers of his blog to support Ram Dass financially. Explaining that Ram Dass was embarrassed “for not having prepared for his own elderly health care—for what he now perceives as burdensome to others,” Dyer invited people to provide funding.

This was Dyer’s appeal on behalf of his friend: “Ram Dass is currently living in a home on Maui, (Hawaii) which he doesn’t own and is currently in jeopardy of losing. I am asking all of you to help purchase this home and to set up a financial foundation to take care of this man who has raised so much money to ensure the futures of so many others. Please be generous and prompt—no one is more deserving of our love and financial support. In the end these donations will help ensure that Ram Dass and his work will reach another generation or remind a current generation that it is in giving that we receive.”

People responded. Ram Dass was supported until he died at age 88 in 2019.

By living out and acting upon these four suggestions, you will become an admirable friend to others, one who is valued, trusted, respected, and highly honored. n

the C rown Jewel OF WAUWATOSA

THIS VIBRANT 19TH CENTURY two-story, locally-sourced cream city brick and wood mansion, also known as the Jenkins Austin Day property, is a National Historic Landmark, and is also listed as a designated landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. The land on which the home stands was originally purchased in 1864 for $425 by Wauwatosa’s “most prominent citizen,” Dr. Fisk Holbrook Day. Here, in about 1874, Dr. Day had his “Sunnyhill Home” constructed, likely by friend and family architect James Douglas.

Dr. Day is well known both for his work as a busy physician (he sometimes took one of his daughters with him on his medical rounds, and also sent his daughters up to the home’s five-story tower to watch for the signal white flag at the County Hospital about whether he was needed for emergency cares there.) This striking feature of the home—the impressive tower—also served to further Dr. Day’s interest in astronomy; he owned two telescopes, and used the tower as an observatory.

In addition to Dr. Day’s medical and astronomical interests, he was passionate about geology, and

amassed a sizeable collection of Silurian fossils, considered the finest in Milwaukee. He earned the distinction of having two fossils named after him. He studied and was familiar with the geology of the area, and even encouraged his patients to keep watch for fossil specimens and sites for him. In the “Cabinet Room” of this exquisite home, Dr. Day housed his extensive glass and wood display cases filled with his fossil collections.

Part of Dr. Day’s fossil collection—an impressive 8,265 pounds of material—was eventually sold to Professor Alexander Agassiz, son of renowned naturalist Louis Agassiz, and moved to Harvard University.

Dr. Day’s varied and extensive collection spanned beyond fossils, including such treasures as Phillipine Island corals, Lebanese cedar, gemstones, expensive Chinese and Japanese treasures, and valuable pictures. Some speculate that the size of his collection was one factor that prompted Dr. and Mrs. Day to eventually leave their home and move around the corner to an even larger space.

THE FINE ART OF JEWELRY INGENUITY ALIVE IN DOWNTOWN WAUKESHA

Abe Austin purchased the Day mansion in 1895 for $5,500. His son, Abe Austin Jr., returned to the family home in 1945, following a period of vacancy and unfortunate disrepair. The home was also owned by Florence Rust, who had dreamed of restoring it, but before this, the famed pianist Liberace indicated an interest in purchasing the mansion. Neighboring residents disliked the idea of the home becoming in any way a museum, with its associated crowds of visitors, so following Rust’s ownership, the home was sold to husband and wife physicians, Dr. Peter Glaeser and Dr. Julie Jagemann.

When Drs. Glaeser and Jagemann purchased the mansion in 1988, the local community celebrated whole-heartedly. Through tireless research, labor and love, the couple undertook the monumental task of restoring both the interior and exterior of this historic property. Through their diligence, they were able to return the home to its original beauty. For example, Dr. Glaeser and his brother painstakingly hand-dipped the home’s cedar shingles to restore their original historic diamond pattern. The home’s brick exterior had been painted white, and Drs. Glaeser and Jagemann had the brick carefully acid washed to return it to its original hue. They had an exact replica of the original front porch constructed and then added stairs themselves. Dr. Jagemann diligently worked to have replicas of the original mouldings made for the home’s window casements and base-mouldings. Local plaster artisan Jules Orlandine restored the home’s plasterwork in the living room. Through these and other restoration efforts, the couple’s attention to detail, craftsmanship, and beauty returned this special and unique home to its current impeccable presentation.

Most recently, since 1997, the home has been lovingly kept and maintained by Mary and the late Jimmie Jenkins. In an interesting intersection of lives and nod to the home’s history, the Jenkins family have a grandson named after the home’s original owner. Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins researched and carefully constructed the home’s threeseason room and an attractive 2.5-car garage and connecting glass breezeway in 1998.

The home is constructed in the Tudor/ Provincial and Victorian/Federal styles and has also been described as Italianate-Gothic revival design, boasting a lovely light cream-colored brick exterior with artful wood detailing. Deciduous trees and an emerald lawn add to the peaceful setting of this attractive home.

The home’s light-filled foyer features elegant

Tile flooring is durable and attractive in this food-preparation haven, while a central island allows for added work space and storage. Along the opposite edge of one counter, chairs are placed for additional informal dining. Ample tall windows and an elegant, suspended set of chandelierstyle ceiling lights make the kitchen feel cheerful and bright, a welcoming space to design culinary delights. An ornate wrought-iron spiral staircase leads from the edge of the kitchen to the second floor and basement. This staircase is the only interior access to the basement; as is common in homes of this period, basement access from the exterior is also possible.

A walk-in pantry offers exceptional, elegant white cabinetry and a dark countertop with a sink, for ideal storage and additional food preparation space. Windows in the pantry allow natural light to infuse the space. A lovely light hardwood floor features darker wood accent in a tasteful stripe pattern around the perimeter of the room.

The dining room in this lovely mansion is both stately and elegant, a perfect room to dine or entertain. Pleasing tall windows offer views of the lush trees beyond the room. Elegant wallpaper reflects the home’s Victorian beauty, while lighter cream wood moulding around the windows and the ceiling’s edge balance the wallpaper’s floral design. A lovely, smooth oak hardwood floor with walnut inlays adds to the sense of light in this gracious room, complementing the light hue of the ten-foot ceiling. This room includes a second marble fireplace, built as a complete replica of the original. A tasteful suspended ceiling fixture offers additional light above the dining space.

An office on the main floor of the home offers spectacular built-in dark wood bookshelves, deep green striped wallpaper, and darker wood moulding around the ceiling, windows and doors. This room provides the option for a dignified, professional workspace in the home setting.

A half bath on the main floor of the home includes attractive rose-patterned wallpaper and a light-toned sink with gold accents. Light fixtures feature glass with gold accents, complementing the sink’s elegant design and further reflecting the 19th century beauty of the home.

The home features a lovely, enclosed three-seasons room with an attractive circular brick patio with accent wrought iron fencing just beyond. Two additional brick patios allow for pleasant outdoor relaxation, dining, or conversing.

This spacious mansion offers elegant and welldesigned bedrooms, for comfortable relaxation and repose. A first bedroom is conveniently located on the main floor of the home, while the master bedroom and one additional bedroom are located on the home’s second floor. Lovely hardwood floors in the bedrooms mirror those in the dining and living room, and windows allow ample sunlight into these welcoming rooms. The master bedroom and second bedroom feature ample walk-in closets with excellent, wellplanned storage. The second bedroom offers an attached full bath; the attached full master bath includes a soaking tub, walk-in shower, and double sinks. The home’s second floor laundry room is spacious and pleasant, offering convenience and elegance.

Reimagining Your REMOTE WORKSPACE

WITH REMOTE AND HYBRID work schedules here to stay for many Americans, it’s important to have a space dedicated to comfort and productivity. The initial transition to remote work may have involved setting up an impromptu workstation at the dining room table but creating a long-term, functional home office can be one of the first steps to increasing efficiency, focus and productivity.

Whether your work area is a spacious room, small den or desk in a quiet spot in the house, these ideas can help you create a space where you enjoy working.

Select the Perfect Location

While some remote workers have a spare bedroom or den they can dedicate as a home office, others may need to create a multiuse area in which office space occupies another room, such as the dining room, family room or basement. If you have several options for your workspace, consider how lighting and sound may impact your ability to focus.

For example, positioning your desk near a window can help increase your mood and reduce boredom. Similarly, if possible, choose a location where noise from other family members moving around or traffic outside will be less of a distraction. Earplugs or background noise can help drown out sounds if you’re restricted to a specific location in your home.

Keep Color in Mind

Colors can influence productivity and mood, so it’s important to consider them when designing or updating your workspace. Avoid white, which can lead to boredom, and instead choose a color scheme that can make a positive impact. Warm colors like red or orange can increase energy; blues are relaxing and can help keep blood pressure down; and green can help reduce stress.

An on-trend option like the Granny Chic Home Office from Wellborn Cabinet, Inc., can be set up in nearly any area of the

home to create a stylish workspace. Featuring Premier Series cabinets with Napa doors in an olive finish and satin nickel hardware, this desk and hutch also includes base and crown moulding to help set it apart as a space devoted to productivity. Plus, accessories like a wastebasket pullout, drawer inserts and dividers, and tiered organizers can make organization easy.

Choose a Desk and Chair

Start by measuring your space to see how large of a desk you can accommodate then decide between a traditional desk or trendy adjustable-height version, which can allow you to sit and stand throughout the workday and has been shown to provide health benefits in addition to increasing work performance. An ergonomic chair with a padded seat and armrests is also a must-have to provide lumbar support and increase comfort while seated.

Find Storage Solutions

Storage is one of the most critical aspects when designing your home office. To avoid clutter and keep documents and other items organized, consider options such as built-in cabinets and shelving, base cabinets with desk file drawers, utility cabinets and wall bookcases. You can even customize your cabinets and choose from a wide selection of styles including traditional, transitional, casual, formal, contemporary or eclectic with options from Wellborn Cabinet.

Add Plants and Decor

Office plants provide numerous benefits, including improving air quality and increasing productivity. In fact, a study published in the “Journal of Environmental Horticulture” found productivity increased 12% when workers performed a task on a computer in a room with plants compared to those who performed the task in the same room without plants. Low-maintenance species such as orchids and succulents also produce a pleasant aroma and earthy atmosphere to decrease stress.

In addition, consider your space’s decorations if you will be conducting video calls. If your home office doesn’t have much natural light, place a light source behind the camera. While the background for your calls should be relatively neutral, a mural or art on the walls or shelves can complement your professionalism and add a creative touch to your space. HAVE YOU EVER taken time to consider what comes first in your list of priorities? According to Webster, a priority is a preference based on urgency, importance or merit. In view of the precarious world situation, what would you consider an urgent priority for yourself as well as for our nation? In a telephone conversation with a friend, the caller went into detail over her many problems. She concluded with, “I suppose you think I should do some reading along spiritual lines. I’d like to, but I’m just too busy for that kind of thing.”

Too busy for God was the truth of the matter as well as the reason for her unsolved problems. When we make human “busy-ness” our first priority and push aside a recognition and realization of the presence and power of a force greater than man, then we are forced to accept the consequences. When the consequences become overwhelming, when we have reached a so-called dead end, what do we do? We call or shout or scream, “God, come quick! I need help.”

Cults come and go, but the basic principle taught in the first two commandments by the Nazarene carpenter will always be the foundation upon which our world must build. Young as he was, Elihu delivered a profound ultimatum to a rebellious Job when he said, “I would remind thee, that God is greater than man.”

The patriarch Isaiah put his seal upon Elihu’s statement when he urged his people to find their strength in quietness and in confidence and to “cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?” The acceptance of these statements as truth could put our nation back on its feet, could go a long way toward solving our problems, could save us from disaster. For too long we have put our emphasis on the power of man instead of acquainting ourselves with the power of God. We have pyramided man’s power into the unstable structure that has now come crashing down upon us.

A musician doesn’t become a concert pianist in a day or month or year. He practices hours upon hours and, once having reached his goal, he is forced to continue to practice in order to retain it. So it must be with us in our spiritual building. Few people are born with a high spiritual consciousness. They have to practice the presence of God and meditate on the power of God day after day if they would feel God operating in their daily lives. “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it....” said the psalmist. No nation can survive without a spiritual force guiding its people. Crime, prostitution at a teenaged level, cults proclaiming drugs as a religion—surely the time has come for us to pull ourselves out of the filth of the gutter into the purity of a spiritual strength based upon faith in the presence and power of an Invisible Something within us. All we need do is turn within in true humility and make that Something our first priority. n
