THOUGH DECEMBER in Wisconsin marks the entry to the darkest season of the year, this time of holiday gatherings and merriment sheds its own light across the wintery months. Giving and receiving gifts further warms spirits, and bright and happy memories illuminate the season. For children, the delightful anticipation of a new toy at the holidays—or at any special occasion throughout the year—is a welcome burst of fun. Perhaps you enter this holiday season in full anticipation of the toys you will gift to young relatives or friends. Or, you may look forward to time spent playing alongside a young child or grandchild of your own. Whether you plan to give, play with, collect, or even furnish a classroom with toys, there are many unique and time-tested non-electronic options available in today’s retail venues. A walk down the aisles of toy history sheds light on many familiar favorites, from simple balls and hoops to dolls, blocks, rocking horses and marbles. Many of
these classic toys boast long histories, oftentimes first appearing much further back in time than we might expect. Marbles, for example, are a prime example of an enduring ancient toy, with very early examples made from found materials like stones or nuts. Marbles have been discovered at various archaeological sites in several continents, demonstrating their global popularity from ancient times onward. British author, toy designer and scholar Deborah Jaffé, in her 2006 book The History of Toys: From Spinning Tops to Robots, discusses the universal appeal of play and toys as she explores the historical development of their use. “Play transcends cultures, is timeless and follows similar developmental paths everywhere…,” Jaffé states, and because of this, it follows that toys share many universal designs and applications throughout their history. As in the case of marbles, the appeal of objects that roll is perhaps one universal human interest.

As materials have evolved and changed over the centuries, Jaffé notes, play with various toys evolves. Today, toy balls of various sizes, colors, textures and materials delight people of all ages, whether explored by a baby’s new fingers or tossed, kicked or batted in adult sports like basketball, soccer or baseball. Nowadays, there are even modified balls available, such as the “Phlat Ball,” which can be compressed into a thick disc, tossed like a Frisbee, and popped open during flight, only to be caught
once again as a ball. Palm-sized balls are perfect for juggling, though weighted beanbag-type balls are often preferable, as they don’t bounce away if dropped. Many stores offer small novelty balls with special elements, such as balls that light up when bounced or rubbery balls with nubs or spikes to offer a textural experience in the game of “catch.” Paddle balls allow balls to be ricocheted back and forth on the safe tether of a rubbery cord. And the much older cup and ball toy provides a trickier hand-eye coordination challenge for children and adults alike. Traditionally, wooden hoops were rolled

by hand or by using a stick; even in the 1300s, children and adults enjoyed “spinning,” an activity similar to today’s hula hooping. Hula hoops, though most popular in previous decades, continue to amuse children with their wobbly roll or wiggly rotation capabilities. Yo-yos and rattles enjoy a long history as well, providing amusement with movement and sound. Stores today offer a delightful array of toy options for children of all ages. Some of the offerings are modern interpretations of long-lived play classics, while others are novel, marked by the materials and technology shaping our modern era of toys. Barnes & Noble Booksellers’ Glendale location at 5755 North Bayshore Drive features a pleasing selection of toys, craft and science-based kits, dolls, puzzles and more, in addition to a broad array of book titles. For those shopping for babies, Barnes & Noble’s Glendale store selection includes modern interpretations of rattle classics and huggable plush toys. A colorful, “Squishy Rattle Ball” from Ogobolli or Infantino’s “Orbit Rattle,” with a movable, spinning ball and safely-enclosed colorful plastic beads within a graspable Saturnlike orbit are designed to please babies ages six months and older. Ultra-soft stuffed animals, like Baby Gund’s “Peek-A-Boo Bear” and a selection of little fuzzy friends, invite babies to interact and cuddle. Some of the smaller plush animals are attached to durable, colorful plastic teethers, and several include crinkly ears and interior rattles for a full sensory experience. Despite the infusion of interactive or computer-based electronic toys and devices, parents often choose an array of imaginationinspiring manipulative or building toys, dolls, or classic toy sets for their children. Stores like The Learning Shop aim to inspire play with a variety of this type of classic non-electronic, high-quality toy. With local stores in Brookfield, Mequon, Greendale and Discovery World on the lakefront, The Learning Shop is accessible to many communities. Dolls have been staples of the toy realm for centuries, allowing children to practice emerging nurturing and caregiving skills while also acting out real-world situations, engaging in role-play, and problem-solving interpersonal dilemmas. Not surprisingly, play figures are among the most popular-selling toys at The Learning Shop’s Mequon location at 11043 North Port Washington Road. noted that Playmobil® sets are very popular, and that their varied theme sets with detailed accessories are popular with both boys and girls. Recent additions to the Playmobil® sets have been introduced in anticipation of the Playmobil® movie due out this December. For younger children, Gama noted that Baby Stella and Baby Stella Fella (the boy counterpart) are very popular. With their extra clothes and accessories, strollers, feeding sets, and magnet-anchored “binkies,” these dolls offer modern children a very realistic caregiving play experience. As children grow, Gama noted that both boys and girls also enjoy imaginative play with Calico Critters®, appealing small-sized toy animal doll families complete with clothes and dwellings. Some contemporary toy companies offer the combined durability, aesthetic appeal, and learning and play capacities of classic toys, merged with a modern application and design. Gama indicated that Melissa & Doug toys are very popular sellers at The Learning Shop as well. Their line of toys includes puzzles; a popular train set; dress-up outfits for boys and girls; kitchen, grocery, and pet-related play sets; and a popular baby-doll high chair. Toys such as these offer what Gama described as a combination of durability and “some built-in growth to them,” both indicators of a toy’s popularity and lasting appeal. Some building materials, like the popular Magna-Tiles® sets, allow children to work in two or three dimensions. Gama indicated that these toys facilitate imaginative play through the building of 3-D structures like houses, towers or bridges. As children get older, they may also experiment with manipulating the tiles in a 2-D fashion, similar to Tangram puzzles. Other popular building sets include Magnetix—Gama’s favorite—SmartMax®, Magformers, and Plus-Plus. According to Gama, Plus-Plus building pieces resemble double plus signs. Though not magnetic, they can be connected to make 2-D or 3-D creations. And because they are sold in either a large box or smaller tubes, they become portable necessities for caregivers of children on the move. The Learning Shop also offers a selection of classic (Monopoly, Trouble, Clue, Yahtzee and more) and new educational games and puzzles. Some of these are designed to grow with children E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

in new and unique ways as well. For example, “family puzzles” offer different “zones” with pieces of different sizes to accommodate both younger children and more mature puzzlers. Toy stores such as The Learning Shop provide a beneficial shopping experience, including perks such as free gift wrapping and the option for guidance in selecting the perfect toy. According to Gama, shoppers appreciate that toy-sellers at her store “can give opinions on what is successful” when selecting a toy. Gama said that she and her co-workers have “made a couple choices” and serve as “first gatekeepers for safety,” both assets to parents, teachers, caregivers and children alike. Toys in recent years have made promising strides in offering children lasting educational and play value, Gama concluded. “It’s nice to see that people are investing in their children’s education,” she said. The manufacture and gifting of highquality toys, often with multiple play applications, shows a “conscious effort to give something of lasting value,” Gama said. She summarized, “There (are) so many choices, but they are thoughtful choices.” n

FOR ANY FIRST-TIME VISITOR to Rome, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums will be must-see destinations. The museum collections at the Vatican are diverse, impressive and magnificent, and include, most famously, the works of Renaissance artists Raphael and Michelangelo. museum, you can and will enjoy it...if you make a few strategic preparations before you go. 1. Avoid the lines. On any day the museum is open, a long, dense queue clogs the sidewalk down the street and around the corner outside the Vatican wall waiting to get in. You don’t have to wait, nor do you have to pay inflated prices by purchasing tickets from the numerous people on the street. Buy your vouchers online at the official website (Vatican.va) before you go. You will pay the same price as the at-the-door ticket plus a small booking fee, which is well worth it. You will have to reserve a specific time, but the window is flexible. You can also reserve an audio tour online if you wish. Keep in mind that the audio tour requires specific predefined stops that might be difficult during peak crowds. There are plenty of English language signs along the way, so don’t think you’ll be left high and dry if you go through without a lot

of background information. Once you make the online purchase, print a voucher to be exchanged for an actual ticket. With your voucher, you can walk into the museum entrance without waiting in line. Once inside, go to the window on the left that’s signed for tour groups and online ticket purchasers. There you will collect your entry ticket. Go upstairs, bypass the ticket booths, and enter the museum. Note that the museum is open for free on the last Sunday of every month and, not surprisingly, that is the most crowded day of all. 2. Avoid the busiest time of year/day. You don’t always have an option for coming in the off-season, but if you do, avoid the summer months. Not only are the crowds worse, but the museum rooms are hot and full of uncomfortable, sweating tourists. As for the best time of day to go, there is an option for booking entrance before the official opening time, but it is expensive. For most people, avoiding the crowds will be possible by going very early or late in the afternoon. The latter is the best option. By late afternoon, most of the tour groups have gone, and it is the tour groups more than anything that create congestion. Allowing at least three hours to see the museum is reasonable for most people, so go between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m. and you will E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

be surprised to find that there are moments in some of the less popular rooms that you are completely alone. 3. Skip the ramp. Unless you are young, vigorous and want to see it all, take the escalator up the several flights to begin the tour. The alternative, a winding, upsloping ramp, may seem like a good idea, especially because there is an exhibit of interesting miniature boats along the way, but the entire museum awaits and it will take a lot of energy. 4. Pace yourself. Many people make the mistake of lingering long over the earliest exhibits. By the time they finally get to the later ones, they are hot, tired, dealing with aching feet and simply want to get out. Since the route through the museums is designed to highlight the most popular attractions at the end and move everyone through in the same direction, try to spread yourself evenly. The best way to do this is to familiarize yourself with the exhibits ahead of time and decide which ones are most important to you. Breeze through the others. theme, you will find a wide variety of secular art and artefacts as well. There are fabulous Greek and Roman statues and the Egyptian collection contains exquisite examples of hieroglyphic tablets and mummies. Magnificent sixteenthcentury tapestries hang on the walls of the Gallery of Tapestries (Galleria degli Arazzi), and there is even a museum of modern art. Be resigned that you won’t see everything the first time through. 5. Don’t get hung-up on picture taking. Photos are allowed in every location in the museum except the Sistine Chapel. But taking a good photo in this crowded place is challenging and frustrating, so much so that many people get sidetracked with it and forget to enjoy their surroundings. Take a moment to actually look around and observe each room. Look at the ceiling, at the floor, at the doors and window frames and at the small works of art that don’t cry out for attention, but are exquisite nonetheless. There are rewarding discoveries to be made throughout. 6. Don’t hurry through to the Sistine Chapel. Before a visit to the museum, a lot of people have it in their heads that they’ve come for just one thing: Michelangelo’s work on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. To get to it, you have to go through most of the museums, and once you get there, you cannot go back. So time yourself. You won’t need more than ten or fifteen minutes at the most to appreciate the Sistine Chapel. It is indeed impressive, but so are many other exhibits, including quite a few ornately painted ceilings. One of the most stunning is in the map gallery (Galleria Della Carte Geografiche). This is a long, narrow hallway with forty sixteenth-century wall-mounted paintings of maps of the Italian Peninsula. The entire ceiling is decorated with lavishly framed images painted by Italian masters of the time. There is plenty to see before you reach the Sistine Chapel. In fact, the impact of the Chapel may seem diminished by all the grandeur along the way. After spending some time gazing at the ceiling in the Sistine Chapel, you’ll begin your long, labyrinthine walk toward the museum exit. There are still exhibits to be seen, including the mind-boggling papal treasures protected in glass display cases. The crowds at this point will be considerably thinned, so you may potentially enjoy this part of the tour best. But even the most popular exhibits will fulfill all your hopes and expectations with shrewd planning and patience, making your first visit to the Vatican Museums an enjoyable and rewarding experience. n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

WHO WERE THE
WISE MEN?
Understanding the Christmas Story by Greg H an son n n n
DECEMBER 2019
“WE THREE KINGS OF ORIENT ARE.” That’s what the traditional Christmas carol proclaims. But who were these kings? And what do they really have to do with Christmas? The annual celebration of Christmas is founded on the birth of Jesus Christ about two thousand years ago. According to the Bible, when Jesus was born visitors from an eastern land came to see the newborn child. They came to worship Jesus and to offer him gifts. The account of this visit is found in the Gospel of Matthew chapter two. Over the years, these visitors have been called magi, magicians, astrologers, astronomers, and kings. But perhaps the most common (and the most accurate) term is “wise men.” While the Christmas carol tells us that there were three of them, the Biblical record does not actually specify a number. It does tell us that they brought with them three kinds of gifts, so that has led to the traditional belief that there were three wise men in total. Tradition has even given these three wise men names: Casper, Melchior, and Balthasar. But instead of three wise men, it is more likely that there were several traveling together. So where did they come from? We do not know the answer to that, either. The passage from the Gospel of Matthew tells us they came from the east. That could mean they came from Persia (Iran), Babylon (Iraq), Syria, or as far away as India or the Orient. Wherever they were from, the wise men traveled to the Judean town of Bethlehem to see the baby Jesus. The Bible tells us they traveled by following a star. Was this an actual star? Perhaps. It could have been a supernova. Or as some scholars suggest, it might have been a meteor, a comet, or a conjunction of planets. Whatever it was, the text tells us that it caught the attention of the wise men. They believed it would lead them to a newborn king, they chose to follow it, and it led them to the place where Jesus was. Why would they follow a star? Why would a star prompt the wise men to set out on their journey? A possible answer is that the wise men were familiar with ancient Jewish writings.

Six hundred years earlier, much of the Jewish population had been led away as captives into Babylon. When that happened, the Jews would have taken their Scriptures with them. If the wise men came from that region, it is possible that they knew of the verse from the Jewish Torah that told of a future king of Israel appearing like a star. As these wise men were traveling through Israel, they chose to stop in Jerusalem to see King Herod. They asked Herod if he was aware of the birth of a newborn king of the Jews. Herod was not aware of the birth of Jesus, but their question worried him. His authority would be threatened by a new king. Herod consulted his advisors, and they told him about two Old Testament prophecies written centuries earlier by Micah and Samuel. These prophecies foretold a birth in Bethlehem of a child who would become ruler. According to the Bible, Herod told the wise men they could find the baby in Bethlehem. But then he asked that the wise men return to tell him where the baby was. He told the wise men he wanted to worship the baby himself, but he was actually plotting to dispose of the baby.
The wise men continued on their way, still following the star. The star led them to Bethlehem, and then it seemed to stop over a particular house. The wise men entered the house and found Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus. The wise men proceeded to give their gifts to Jesus. They gave gifts of gold, frankincense (an expensive perfume often used as an anointing oil), and myrrh (used for purifying and embalming). This practice of giving gifts at Christmas time has continued to the present day. After they gave their gifts, the wise men headed back to their homeland. The Bible tells us that they had been warned not to tell Herod where to find Jesus, so they traveled home by a different route. While this visit by the wise men is usually wrapped up into our modern celebration of Christmas, it is unlikely that they actually arrived on the night Jesus was born. Perhaps that was when their journey began, but they did not arrive until up to two years later. Nevertheless, the wise men appear every Christmas in nativity scenes and in Christmas productions. They are often recognized for their faith in following the star, their generosity in offering gifts, and their heartfelt worship of the baby Jesus. n

UNLESS YOU ARE “FEELING” CHRISTMAS, you have short-changed your opportunity for genuine enjoyment of a day that for centuries should have been named “Day of the Year.” Dispense with the crass commercialism that introduces Christmas sales long before the Thanksgiving turkey has been served. Dispense with the dozens of Santa Clauses whose numbers must confuse small children if there are any small children still unsophisticated enough to believe in the jolly old man. Dispense with the useless hoopla pictured on TV as the epitome of the Christmas spirit, and let your heart begin to “feel” Christmas. Don’t be too academic about its origin: legend, fantasy or fact. Don’t be too absolute about its symbolism: creches on public property, ethnic Christmas carols, public school Christmas programs. Don’t be too concerned about keeping up with the Joneses in your celebration: the most elaborately decorated house in the block, the most detailed biography of the family’s accomplishments during the last year, neither of which is designed to create a “feel” for Christmas. These are the manifestations of human exploitation. Any fairly intelligent individual can indulge himself in an outer display of interest in Christmas. Would you really like to “feel” Christmas? Begin the season early in the month by being at peace with yourself. Wake up in the morning with a sense of gratitude—“this is God’s day and all I need do is let God be responsible for what goes on in this day. Under His direction everything will be in divine order and I can rest in that.” A few days of this type of disciplined thinking, and before you are aware of it, peace will begin to permeate your being, your affairs, your household. Hold to it firmly throughout each day until the sense of peace has been firmly established and you can go on to another facet of “feeling” Christmas. How about joy? Peace and gratitude lead naturally into happiness, a joyous acknowledgement that all is well. For the Christmas season dispense with listening to the negativism of the evening news. Don’t ride the fast lanes into Christmas. Enjoy the fun of family sing-a-longs, of choosing exactly the right tree with the help of the junior members of the family. Develop a sense of family “togetherness”, of neighborhood friendliness. Be joyous, and live joyously for others. With peace and joy well on their way to becoming constant companions, you can’t possibly miss the “feel” of Christmas. All you need to reach the peak of this new Christmas experience is to add the most important “feel” of all—love. In today’s fast moving world, love seems to be sitting on the sidelines, forlorn and forgotten. It may take a bit of doing to get the “feel” of love, to look with love on all those around you at home or out in the business world, but if God can look upon us with His great enfolding and impersonal love, we should be able to accomplish something along those lines. Each of us would then become an instrument for the peace and joy and love of God to flow through us and out into the world. To become an instrument for God! To send forth peace and love and joy from within oneself! What a breathtakingly wonderful way to “feel” Christmas. n
