MARTINIQUE A tropical taste of France
By Rochelle Buchwald n
LOOKING FOR A WARM VACATION spot this winter?

Speak a little French? Like to explore? The Caribbean island of Martinique is a wonderful little getaway. While spending a semester abroad in this tropical taste of France, I fell in love with the culture, the people, and the beauty of the island. Amazingly for such a small island, Martinique has everything from desert to tropical forests and even a volcano surrounded by black sand beaches. There are open-air markets for shoppers, the ruins of the town of St. Pierre for history buffs, seafood restaurants Ă la Creole for gourmands, and plenty of sea and sand for sun worshippers. The snorkeling is wonderful because of the calm, clear Caribbean water, especially on the western side of the island,

while the eastern side gets waves from the Atlantic and hosts all the good surfing spots. Or if you prefer the mountains to the beach, hire a guide and climb Mt. Pelée, the dormant volcano on the northern end of the island. And make sure you tour a rum plantation while on the island.
Martinique is a rugged Caribbean island that’s part of the Lesser Antilles. An overseas region of France, Martinique is deeply French and Creole at the same time. This mixed culture create an unique French Creole touch. Martinique is truly one place that has it all.

TECH UPGRADES To improve home function n n n
WHEN SMART HOME TECHNOLOGIES first emerged, their purpose was largely for convenience and operating the devices was often clunky. Today, smart devices seamlessly integrate into connected home systems to make living more efficient, improve home security and even offer advantages for your health. If you’re considering upgrades to your home, smart technology is a savvy way to add value and function. Energy Consumption Smart lighting is among the most prevalent of smart functions on the market, largely because of the multiple benefits it offers. It’s handy to be able to set regular lighting patterns throughout the home so you’re never left in the dark. You can also manage those lights from your smartphone, so forgetting to turn off a light is no longer an issue and you can fool would-be-thieves into thinking the house is inhabited when you’re away. Fingertip controls offer plenty of advantages, but another consideration is energy management. Dimming features and sensors that turn lights off and on through various detection methods (such as movement or recognizing a connected Bluetooth device) help minimize wasted energy. The lights are typically constructed to use less energy, and most models

Air Quality In an average home, the pollutant level is normally low when people first enter the house, or after effective ventilation. However, after an extended period of time, daily activities can raise the level of humidity and carbon dioxide to unhealthy levels that can cause headaches, dizziness and sleepiness, and can contribute to long-term health issues. “Few are aware of the impact of indoor air

Romantic Break in
FRENCH POLYNESIA
n
FRENCH POLYNESIA, often simply referred to as Tahiti after
n n
the name of its main island, is the epitome of a luxury romantic getaway destination. For those with high budgets seeking a truly unforgettable break, French Polynesia is one of the world's number one honeymoon and romantic destinations. It is a place of particularly idyllic resorts, stunning beaches, reefs and tropical island landscape. Although known mostly for its main island, the French overseas territory is actually home to 130 islands covering an area of ocean almost as large as Europe. The territory consists of six groups of islands and many smaller atolls. For those planning a longer break of a month or more, Tahiti is a great place to stop over for a week en route to Australia or New Zealand and this is also one of the better value ways to reach the islands. Aside from its famously perfect beaches, there is plenty to do in the region other than just relax under a palm tree. For those wanting to do something a little different, such as go snorkelling over some of the world's best coral reefs or even feeding sharks,

French Polynesia
n n n
Bora Bora is another French Polynesian island which is world famous for its truly luxury resorts and exotic diving and snorkeling opportunities. Unfortunately, however, Bora Bora is also one of the most overpriced islands in the region and, unless money is no object, you may want to consider one of French Polynesia’s slightly more off-the-beaten-track destinations. Bora Bora does is home to some of the region’s most luxurious hotels, some offering bungalows with glass floors looking into the crystal-clear waters. However, if you are looking for something a little less hyped up and far more affordable, French Polynesia offers plenty of other options as well. The Tuamotu islands are a popular destination with their white, sandy beaches and coral reefs. There are 45 islands in the group with the largest one being Rangiroa with a population of just over 3,000. Oddly, the island is famous for having some of the world’s most unique wineries. In recent years, it has been further developed and now boasts a sophisticated tourist infrastructure. For those who enjoy water sports, particularly surfing, Rangiroa and many of the other Tuamotu islands are ideal. For those wanting a little more civilization and more things to do, the main island of Tahiti itself is an ideal choice and it is usually the easiest island to get to as well. The island is home to 178,000 people, accounting for almost 70% of French Polynesia’s entire population. Most of the island’s population live in the capital, Papeete, which is large enough to have the feel of a proper city. There are plenty of attractions here along with beautiful French colonial architecture, fine restaurants and hotels and, of course, a very picturesque waterside with beaches. Tahiti is also known for its beaches of black volcanic sand. You will find no shortage of stunning, upmarket resorts and beach-side hotels overlooking stunningly clear waters and reefs. All those coming to French Polynesia by plane will land in Faa’a International Airport, the only international airport in the territory. The airport is served by Air France, Air New Zealand, Air Tahiti, LAN and Hawaiian Airlines. For travel between the main islands of French Polynesia, there are various domestic flights and ferries. 28

GOD’S CORNER by Ger trude M. Puelicher
n
SIR JAMES BARRIE, famous Scottish dramatist who combined fantasy
n n
and realism with a whimsical humor that endeared him to readers and audiences alike, once said, “The reason birds fly, and we can’t, is simply that they have perfect faith; for to have perfect faith is to have wings.” Isn’t it sad that we in America have permitted our wings to be clipped, and we can no longer fly. We have lost faith in everything worthwhile—in government, in people, in one another, in the importance of the home, in the existence of a loving God. We have lost faith in all that for which America stands freedom of the individual to achieve to the limit of his capacity coupled with reliance upon the Spirit within us, thus making our understanding the result of the Almighty’s inspiration. Technological progress has conditioned us so thoroughly that we live in awe of its effect upon the industrial arts. We forget, and as a result neglect, the vital importance of spiritual progress. We have become so accustomed to scientific blueprints that we repudiate that which we cannot see, read, or analyse statistically. Webster defines faith as a belief in God, a rather elementary definition as compared with that of Paul the Apostle. He told the Hebrews, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen,” a definition of little interest to the intellectual world of the social and natural sciences. Yet, if one analyses it, can knowledge exist as a verity without faith? Is knowledge belief, or is knowledge conviction? Is belief faith, or is conviction faith? The tragic result of no faith involves loss of faith in the future. A high school senior said to me bitterly, “Gosh, what’s there ahead for us. The world’s all messed up, and we didn’t do it.” That type of thinking doubtless accounts for the increase in teenage suicides. An elderly man said sadly, “There’s no longer a place for us. With limited incomes, all we can do is watch everything we believed in and worked for go down the drain.” Meantime, materialism rides rampant. Big, bigger, best is rapidly becoming a national slogan as self-interest and self-aggrandizement take over. The prince of Old Testament prophets, Isaiah, realized the importance of wings. Perhaps in his spare time he had been a bird watcher. Perhaps he had marveled at the courage of birds which flew despite whatever strong winds were blowing. Undoubtedly, he realized that “to have perfect faith is to have wings.” Because Isaiah had perfect faith, he exerted a strong influence in his time. It was Isaiah who made the pronouncement, “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Let us turn the page in this New Year and determine to wait upon the Lord in perfect faith. Then we shall find that we again have wings. Wings like eagles, strong wings, that lift us from the dullness of materialism to the joyousness of spiritual faith.
