Comfort

THE START OF THE NEW YEAR carries with it a unique glow, a blending of festivity and quiet contemplation suitable for any annual transformation. As we step out into the unknown surrounding a whole new expanse of days, thoughts turn to what has concluded and to what lies ahead. In this time of anticipation, reflection on change draws us in to a quest for comfort. Whether the search for comfort pulls thoughts to a peaceful internal place of repose and revitalization, or outward to a variety of favorite comfortable activities, people and places, the goal remains similar: to capture and nurture all that anchors and revitalizes us, energizing us for the captivating dance into the New Year. For some, sunnier locales beckon at this season. Whether through a vacation or a seasonal move to a second property, this change of location provides a necessary shift in thought, a move away from the familiar patterns of Wisconsin winter and into a fresh realm of possibility, one touched by sunlight and new places to dine, play, and explore. For those who remain in Wisconsin through the chillier January days, comfort may arrive in the form of a new book, a warm fireplace, a homemade soup, or a brisk stroll with a favorite furry pet. Comfort arrives in as numerous ways as the individuals who seek its warmth. Sharing coffee with an old friend; re-imagining a living space; forging ahead on a longforgotten creative dream or project—all are ways to explore the bounty of the year past and the unknown gifts of the year to come. Tapping into favorite

activities, places, and the company of friends and family all serve as tools to center the self and assess the joys and challenges of the old year before stepping forward into the New Year. Nurturing the self and giving to others provide a hand-in-hand circle of benefits. Taking time to revitalize and care for one’s own mind and body fill the well of personal energy that ignites positive transformation in the world. A simple gift to the self—a spa visit, a new exercise class, a special dinner out—can help to restore the personal energy that is so often pulled in multiple directions. When the inner well has been replenished, the individual’s sense of comfort, wellbeing, and gratitude flourish, and these gifts may be shared with those in the community.

This New Year, explore a variety of ways to experience comfort in the community and at home. Begin by stepping into the comforting and health-promoting world of nature close to home, as accessible as the realm of houseplants or the world outside your back door. If you are not

planning to venture farther afield to vacation in a still-green locale, you can still reap the benefits of the plant world right here in Milwaukee. For a relaxing foray into the world of green plants in the heart of Wisconsin winter, visit the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory, commonly referred to as “the Domes.” Located at 524 S. Layton Blvd., the Domes offer rotating seasonal displays in the Show Dome as well as an Arid Dome and a Tropical Dome, each housing a beautiful, diverse array of plant life from those respective climates, year-round. When outdoor weather permits, consider soaking up the beauty of nature in winter at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center or another local nature center or community park. Located at 1111 E. Brown Deer Road, the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center offers a variety of programs throughout the year, in addition to being home to 185 acres housing six miles of trails through forests, ravines, wetlands, shoreline, and restored prairies. Dress safely for the temperatures and explore capturing digital images of your discoveries for inspiration in a meditation or nature journal. Continued on page 20

ARCTIC TRAVEL

A DESTINATION LIST FOR THE MOST EXTREME LOCALS n n n

TRAVELLING TO THE ARCTIC certainly isn’t for everyone, but for the bravest of explorers who don’t mind risking a little frostbite, the Arctic represents one of the furthest away travel destinations that most people haven’t, or won’t, visit. Svalbard Island, Norway Situated far to the north of Norway and lying well within the Arctic Circle, Svalbard is an island that many are unfamiliar with, but for those who have visited, the island leaves a long-lasting impression that leaves few the same when they leave. The former coal mining city of Longyearbyen not only has a fascinating history which you’re sure to learn if you ever visit, but it’s one of the most popular travel destinations on the island. It’s shielded from the local polar bears but

if you venture off anywhere else on the island you are required to have an armed guard at all times for your own protection. From the city, you’ll be able to go on multiple trips including snowmobile riding, dog sledding and visiting ice caves formed by water that rests under ice glaciers. Definitely a destination that you’ll want to add to your list if you’re a traveller who wants the visit the most extreme of all destinations. Continued on page 18

Arctic Travel

n n n

Continued from page 15

The Blue Lagoon, Iceland Another fantastic arctic destination for anyone who loves spectacular views, The Blue Lagoon is situated in Iceland and represents a unique travelling opportunity for anyone who loves to spend their time outdoors. The lake is a natural lake in the arctic that you can actually spend hours at a time in without freezing, or even being cold in the slightest. The reason is simple: the lake is heated from underground by lava. Iceland was formed millennia ago by volcanic activity and there’s still quite a few active volcanoes on the island that provide a unique source of heat and make this lake one of the most sought travel destinations for travellers who love unique experiences. Even if it’s a chilly -20 degrees outside of the water, the temperature in the water remains a pleasant 30 degrees that makes you simply never want to get out and leave. On top of that, the water is reported to have a healing effect as it is rich in minerals like sulphur and silica. An outdoor spa is something that you’re unlikely to find anywhere else within the Arctic so if you

ever have the opportunity to visit, make sure you don’t miss out. Glacier Bay, Alaska This national park in Alaska is so incredible that it was even listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site back in 1979 and is now a highly protected area. If you’re looking to experience a site that shows you just what the Arctic is like then Glacier Bay is a destination that you’ll want to add to your must-see list. The ecosystem is unlike many other destinations and there’s no shortage of animal and plant life to see. Bears roam over almost all of Alaska but some of the animals, such as the Canadian lynx, aren’t animals that you’ll see almost anywhere else in the world. If you enjoy spotting marine life then you’ll definitely want to take a boat tour and you might just be lucky enough to set your sights on animals like a sea otter, a harbour seal, or even a Steller sea lion. Unlike a number of Arctic destinations, Glacier Bay doesn’t get too cold and the average winter temperate remains a not too uncomfortable 0 degrees Celsius. Valdez, Alaska Just because you’re in the Arctic doesn’t mean that you have to be in the middle of nowhere,

miles from civilization. The city of Valdez is located along the south coast of Alaska and boasts a population of just under 4000, small by large city standards but a good sized population for an arctic town. A great destination for travellers who like a little bit of comfort in the destinations that they visit, there’s also plenty to see and do in the outdoors. There’s always regular outdoor activities you can partake in, such as hiking and rock climbing, but one of the reasons to visit is the unique Worthington Glacier. The glacier is one of the natural wonders of Alaska and boasts incredibly blue ice that can you walk on - just mind your step as you do. The Keystone Canyon is another great location and offers views of spectacular waterfalls as well as having an opportunity to spot large varieties of the local wildlife, although some you’ll want to keep your distance from. There’s so much to see in the region that it’s almost impossible to see it all if you travel by foot or car alone, luckily there’s a great way to see most of the sights at an affordable price: a helicopter tour. There’s a number of operators in the area and seeing the sights from the sky is a wonderful experience that’s going to stay with you for a long time. n

Winter Comfort

Continued from page 12

Try bringing greenery into your home, or expanding the collection of plants you may already tend. Explore the gradual emergence of a festive amaryllis bloom as winter’s darker days gradually turn toward spring. Or purchase or create a small container garden to keep in a sunny window. Small reminders of spring and the warmer seasons in the year ahead can offer comfort when winter days are long and snow and chill seem endless. For ideas about crafting your own miniature garden space indoors, turn to books such as Lia Leendertz’s 2016 book My Tiny Indoor Garden: Houseplant Heroes and Terrific Terrariums in Small Spaces. Then plan a visit to a local shop such as Mod Gen, “A Modern General Store,” located in downtown Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward at 211 N. Broadway Street. In addition to their community of houseplants available for purchase, browse an artfully curated selection of gift items, home accents such as colorful and unique plant vessels, mugs, Wisconsin-themed products, candles, teas and more.

The Milwaukee area is home to an exciting array of dining possibilities, from the casual to the elegant, from foreign cuisine to comforting traditional fare. For a pampering, European-style dining experience of the highest quality, visit Bartolotta’s Lake Park Bistro. Located at 3133 E. Newberry Blvd. in Lake Park on Milwaukee’s East Side, Bartolotta’s Lake Park Bistro opened in 1995 and is home to award-winning Executive Chef Adam Siegel, recipient of the James Beard Award Best Chef Midwest 2008. Enjoy a view of Lake Michigan from the east-facing dining area while you sample fine wines, a delectable appetizer, and an artfully prepared main dish or dessert. Or, for an intimate taste of Paris, café-style, stop at the North Shore Boulangerie. Located at 4401 N. Oakland Ave. in Shorewood, Wisconsin, the North Shore Boulangerie offers a selection of traditional breads and pastries in addition to beverages, including hot chocolate and Cafés Richard coffee from Paris. The North Shore Boulangerie offers delicious lunch items as well in a sunny, pleasant dining area adjoining the intimate café space. Relax with hot chocolate in this welcoming local space on a chilly afternoon, or stop in for a leisurely lunch. n

Ancient Roman Glass is one of the most popular artisans-crafted jewelry lines at the River’s End Gallery in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Even though the gallery has a vast array of jewelry made of many types of materials, the Ancient Roman Glass jewelry’s history makes it our most requested. n n n

ROMAN GLASS has been excavated in archeological sites dating back almost two thousand years. Israel is one of the few locations in the world where geological and climatic phenomena coincide enabling the beautiful formation of layers of patina on the glass. The patina is formed by years of contact with mineral rich damp soil and oxidation. The opalescent color of the patina is due to the vast amount of minerals and conditions the glass has Continued on page 26

ECO-FRIENDLY EARTH-FRIENDLY HOME IMPROVEMENTS FOR WINTER

Blustery winds raging outdoors may leave you struggling to find a balance between making sure your family stays warm and maintaining an earth-friendly home. Keeping your home cozy and honoring your sustainable sensibilities can actually go hand-in-hand.

n n n

JANUARY 2020

MAKING GREEN UPGRADES TO YOUR HOME can add value, too. These sustainable home improvements can go a long way toward boosting your comfort, so you have an inviting oasis to linger where you’re well protected from the elements. Carpeted Floors The sleek, clean look of wood or tile flooring is in high demand for many homeowners. However, carpet can actually provide help with climate control that goes beyond a softer, warmer surface for your bare feet to tread. Carpet can act as an insulator and help keep a room warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. If carpeted flooring isn’t consistent with your style or budget, consider adding substantial area rugs to rooms that could use some extra warmth. Energy-Efficient Heating Systems An efficient option like Mitsubishi Electric’s Zoned Comfort Solutions uses energy smartly by actively heating specific areas of your home where you need it. The system monitors the conditions in each room and adjusts automatically to maintain the desired temperatures. The system’s ductless indoor units offer reusable, long-life, washable filters to improve your indoor air quality while minimizing impact on landfills. Plus, advanced filters on some models offer enhanced odor control to help ensure fresher air during winter months when air tends to stagnate inside due to closed windows and doors. Ceiling Fan Adjustment You may naturally turn off your ceiling fans when winter arrives, but the same fans that provide refreshing cool air in the summer can actually help keep your room warm, too. Simply switching the fans to run clockwise helps draw warm air upward and distribute it throughout the home. This little circulation-boosting move can reduce your energy bill by as much as 10%. Tankless Water Heaters Make leaving the warmth of your bed each morning more appealing with the assurance of a steaming hot shower that doesn’t needlessly burden the environment. Traditional water heaters run

a continuous power cycle to maintain a tank full of hot water, regardless if you’re using it or not. However, a tankless version heats what you need when you need it. It’s important to ensure your tankless unit is sized with the proper gallons-per-minute rating to handle demand for multiple simultaneous uses, like a load of laundry and a shower at the same time. Smart Controls The wide range of smart-enabled home products, appliances and entertainment devices make life more convenient and enjoyable, but they can also play a role in managing your environmental footprint. Helpful tools, like Mitsubishi Electric’s kumo cloud mobile app, ensure you’re not wasting energy to perform functions when you’re not even home. These programs allow you to schedule your daily routines and even make adjustments remotely when your day gets off track. For example, it allows you to program and adjust your heating and cooling system from a smartphone or tablet so you won’t come home to a house that’s freezing cold.

Better Lighting Winter isn’t just cold; it’s often dark and dreary, too. That means you’re more likely to rely on energy to illuminate your home, especially since an alternative like throwing open the curtains to let in natural light can have the unintended consequence of allowing cold air to seep in. You can curb your energy reliance and the impact on your energy bills by swapping out your bulbs for light emitting diode lights, compact fluorescent lamps or energy-saving LED lights, which can reduce your energy needs by up to 80%. Use Zones to Reduce Energy Heating your home zone-by-zone can be much more energy efficient and serve as a better means of maintaining your home’s temperature and comfort level. Consider these benefits: n A zoned system allows you to control each area in your home independently and even turn off ones that are not in use. This means you’re only using energy where you need it. n Conventional HVAC systems are either on or off. An option like Mitsubishi Electric’s Zoned Comfort Solutions compressors ramp up or down based on the needs of each room to maintain comfort and conserve energy. n

been exposed. Artists have fallen in love with the patina and created beautiful jewelry made with the ancient Roman glass. At first, Roman glass vessels were made by labor-intensive techniques such as slumping, the creation of shapes by casting, and the use of molds. The finishing was done by grinding and polishing the surface of the glass. During the first century the technique of shaping a mass of molten glass was achieved by placing a blowpipe and inflating it. This proved to be faster than casting and glass vessels became common place throughout the Roman empire. Today, all of these techniques are still used by art glass artists who produce one of a kind glass art. By the first century A.D., new techniques of glass production improved glass vessels so that they no longer imparted a taste or smell to substances and the vessels were commonly used for food, perfumes, and medicines. Glass containers not only preserved the ingredients, but also has the advantage of allowing one to see the contents without removing the cover. Many people in the Roman world believed in conscious existence after death and useful objects, including glass vessels and their contents frequently accompanied the deceased to their tombs. In fact, tombs are the source of the great majority of the Roman glass objects that have survived intact. In times and places where cremation was customary, mourner would pour libations and sprinkle perfumes on the pyre. Sometimes the ashes were collected in glass urns. The use of glass extended from daily life to the grave. The beauty of this glass comes from the spectrum of colors that appear on the glass. The colors are the result of the combined effects of the climate conditions and the surrounding earth in which the glass was embedded. Over the generations, the opalescence of the glass is a great inspiration for the jewelry designer whose art is carried by River’s End Gallery. This gorgeous glass is set in sterling silver and made into a wonderful and distinct variety of jewelry. As of today, no one has been able to duplicate the ancient Roman glass, which adds to the authenticity and the uniqueness of the glass. The River’s End Gallery, 380 West Main Street, Waukesha has a large selection of outstanding Roman Glass jewelry. n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

WEDDING DAYS are meant to be filled with love and celebration, and what better way to ring in the new stage of life as newlyweds than with a well-decorated venue to match the joyous occasion. Whether a couple is on a tight budget or picky when it comes to theme ideas, these decorating tips can help add more flair for the big day. Use a natural venue. Many couples choose wedding venues that require immense amounts of decorations, but a venue with organic scenery or a beautiful view can help alleviate the stress. Consider having the ceremony near a garden or beach with enough natural surroundings to keep guests in awe. Make the cake a centerpiece. Wedding cakes are almost guaranteed to be filled with flavor, but they can also serve as a decorative centerpiece for the reception. Choosing a cake topped with flowers, highlighting bright colors and placing it in a prominent spot at the reception can grab guests’ attention while also keeping them eager for a bite. Choose table accessories that pop. Leave guests in amazement as they make their way

to their seats for the reception with beautifully decorated tables. Table accessories can be anything ranging from patterned table runners to flowers in full-bloom placed in simple, elegant vases. If you are not having a formal sit-down reception, try using paper lanterns or hanging flowers from the ceiling to create an eye-catching atmosphere to remember. Add classic lighting. At times, finding the right lighting to match the mood of a wedding venue can be tricky. In this case, less may actually be more. Try opting for a classic candlelit ceremony or reception to create a more romantic setting. This can save both money and countless hours spent attempting to configure elaborate light fixtures, and also provide a timeless feel. Place engagement photos around the venue. With any wedding, you want the day to feel personal and intimate for the couple and guests alike. Consider decorating the venue with engagement photos of the soon-to-be spouses as they popped the question. This can allow the newlyweds to reminisce while guests view those cherished moments and revel in the occasion. For more tips visit www.elivingtoday.com. n

GOD’S CORNER n n n

30

by Ger trude M. Puelicher

THE CLICK OF A REMOTE CONTROL on a television set, and we have obiterated whatever we don’t want to hear or see. The click of a telephone receiver, and we have broken the connection with the caller. In each case we are free to choose what we want to see or hear. How can we apply this same type of action to our thinking processes when they are not living up to the best in us? What can we shut off or turn on within ourselves so that the result will be of value to those around us? The psychological effect of a New Year is to make us take stock of ourselves. There is therapy in facing oneself, and unless we make the effort under the emotional stimulus of starting over again early in the new year, we’ll find ourselves too quickly caught up in the day by day battle of mere living. Apathy and permissiveness based on a crawling negativism are the deadly twosome that have brought Americans to the place in which they find themselves today: Apathy to the importance of the family unit, to educational trends, to moral attitudes, to the importance of God in our lives; permissiveness to youth’s demands regardless of their nature or value, to mass education where students become nameless statistics, to the far-flung flaunting of freedom in matters of sex, to the theory that the Old Testament is fiction, the Ten Commandments are outmoded, God has lost His status—all of which leads to the

stupidly nonsensical conclusion that ours is a sick society, and America is following in the footsteps of the Roman Empire. Right now is the time to click the remote, break the connection, and find a new outlet for our thinking. Most average Americans are decent, wholesome, warm-hearted individuals, struggling to comprehend the complexities of today’s world as well as to make a living. Vitally concerned with today’s problems, perhaps they are floundering in a mire of “do-goodism” and are frustrated by their lack of adequate accomplishment. Their concern, however, must be given credit. There are thousands of parents who are striving to maintain a strong family unit against the odds of modern youth’s aggressive thinking. Thousands more are earnestly seeking stronger guidelines to an understanding and practical faith. Let us enter the new year with an optimism strengthened not only by faith in America, but by faith in the power of good. We may be beset by problems, but if we face them with a determination to cut them down to size, we will find their solution becomes a matter of simple faith, faith in the inherent good in people, faith in an Infinite Invisible. Paul told the Thessalonians, “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” The Nazarene carpenter said, “According to your faith, be it unto you.” n
