CARDINAL

MANY BIRD LOVERS seek enjoyment by landscaping their yard into an attractive area for birds. One bird, in particular, is especially breathtaking. With its bright red body and black mask, the cardinal is a favorite of many bird enthusiasts. By creating a backyard favorable to cardinals, you will increase your chances of having a family of these beautiful creatures frequent your home. The following is a list of tips for attracting cardinals to your yard. By maintaining a landscape rich in the qualities that cardinals are attracted to, you will not only encourage individual cardinals to visit, but you will also make it an attractive area for nesting cardinals. Because they are not migratory birds, you may be able to observe a family of cardinals as they grow and multiply for many years to come. n

Place bird feeders at a height of 4 to 6 feet. Cardinals gravitate toward stationary feeders rather than hanging ones. n Scatter seed below your feeders too as cardinals enjoy feeding on solid ground as well. n Use wild bird feed that contains sunflower seeds, safflower seeds, or buckwheat. n Install a bird bath in a location that can easily be spotted by the cardinals. The presence of fresh, clean water is vital for attracting birds. n

The Growing Sport of

SNOWSHOEING n n n

JANUARY 2021

IF YOU ARE AN OUTDOORS ENTHUSIAST with a taste for winter activities, you have plenty of choices at your disposal. You can enjoy the fun and excitement of downhill skiing, the peacefulness and serenity of cross country skiing through the back country, or the unique challenge of snowboarding. But if you have grown tired of the same old thing, you might want to try a new challenge. The sport of snowshoeing is quickly gaining ground, as more and more people discover the many great things this sport has to offer. Whether you are looking for a great workout, the perfect way to explore the back country of your favorite ski resort, or just a way to get back to nature, snowshoeing might just be what you have been looking for. What Makes Snowshoeing Unique? Lovers of snow and cold crisp air have plenty of activities to keep them engaged and fit throughout the winter, so what makes snowshoeing so unique? For one thing, snowshoeing gives outdoor enthusiasts a chance to be close to nature, as well as the opportunity to explore at their own pace.

Skiing and snowboarding might give you a chance to see nature, but when you go snowshoeing you can slow down and really get to know the world around you. If you are lucky, you might even come face to face with a grazing moose or a majestic elk as you wind your way down the many snowshoe trails throughout British Columbia and beyond. Why Is Snowshoeing Becoming More Popular? In many ways, snowshoeing represents a primal desire to return to a simpler time and a simpler way of life. In the busy modern world, simply finding time to decompress and get back to nature is priceless, and snowshoeing gives you the chance to do just that. Snowshoeing has been around for thousands of years, ever since our ancient ancestors first learned to move across the snow with ease. You can continue the tradition today by strapping on a pair of snowshoes and exploring the wilderness in your own back yard. Snowshoeing is also a perfect activity for families to enjoy together. Snowshoeing enthusiasts can find a variety Continued on page 14

Snowshoeing

of trails, from easy beginner trails to more challenging trails for experienced outdoor enthusiasts. The wide variety of terrains and trails available makes snowshoeing the perfect way for the whole family to bond while enjoying the beauty of nature. One of the great things about snowshoeing is that it can be enjoyed by all ages and all skill levels. If you can walk, you can walk across the snow on a pair of quality snowshoes. Beginners can enjoy a leisurely stroll through their favorite ski resort, while more experienced snowshoers can head out to the back country to explore the wilderness on their own or with a group of like minded friends. What Do I Need to Get Started? If you would like to try snowshoeing out on your own, you have a number of different choices. You can buy your own snowshoes and head out in the wilderness of your own backyard, and indeed many snowshoe enthusiasts got their start just that way. But as your passion for the sport grows, you will want to find more suitable venues for your new sport.

Fortunately, many ski resorts and mountains throughout British Columbia offer specials designed with snowshoers in mind. If you are booking a stay at one of the many popular ski resorts in British Columbia, be sure to ask about their snowshoe packages. Most ski resorts have snowshoes to rent, allowing new and experienced outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy their favorite sport even if they do not have their own gear. Hiking and backpacking snowshoes are perfect for enthusiasts who prefer powder to packed snow, and those who plan to explore the less traveled snowshoe trails of the back country. These snowshoes are built to last, and built to endure even the toughest conditions out on the trail. The Three Types of Snowshoes When it comes time to rent the snowshoes for your very first trip, keep in mind that there are three distinct types of snowshoes on the market. A good ski resort will have all three types available, making it easy to choose the gear that best meets your needs. The first type of snowshoe is the recreational hiking type. As the name implies, this style of

snowshoe is designed for simple hiking out in the back country or on the trails. These relatively inexpensive snowshoes are the perfect choice for first timers, since they work best on the simple terrain beginners will want to stick to. Recreational hiking snowshoes are not designed for challenging terrain with a lot of steep climbs and drops, but they are perfect for the relatively flat beginner trails many mountain resorts have to offer. Aerobic/fitness snowshoes are designed for active snowshoers who are looking for a good workout. You can spot these unique snowshoes by their sleek design, light weight and durable build. Hiking and backpacking snowshoes are perfect for snowshoe enthusiasts who prefer powder to packed snow, and those who plan to explore the less traveled snowshoe trails of the back country. These snowshoes are built to last, and built to endure even the toughest conditions out on the trail. Hiking and backpacking snowshoes combine lightweight aluminum frames with durable materials designed to float over the surface of the snow, all with a strong binding designed to support many different kinds of boots. When you book your snowshoeing adventure, you might be offered a package deal that includes the rental of the snowshoes themselves, as well as poles and a special snowshoe bag. These package deals are perfect for beginners who want to try their hand at the sport, but more experienced enthusiasts often prefer to purchase their own equipment and bring it with them to the trails. Luckily, snowshoeing is a relatively inexpensive sport, with a good pair of snowshoes typically selling for between $100 and $300. So if you are looking for an exciting way to spend the cold months of winter, why not give snowshoeing a try. The great thing about the sport of snowshoeing is that it can be as easy or as challenging as you want it to be. If your goal is to stay in shape and avoid the winter pounds, you can walk off those holiday meals while exploring the beauty of nature. And if you are looking for a new sport and some friendly competition, you can find that as well. No matter what you are looking for in a sport, snowshoeing has it, and a lot more to boot.

DESIGNING WITH

AUTHENTIC MATERIALS Creating a welcoming and relaxing space may be easier than you expect when you give natural materials a leading role in your design. Elements like natural stone, wood, fiber, metals and even plant life can allow you to express a sense of unique personal style that is broadly appealing. n n n

JANUARY 2021

MOST INVITING ROOMS share one quality: ample natural light, which creates a subtly vibrant and energetic ambiance. Other aspects of an enticing design may be less obvious to the casual observer. Special touches like custom craftsmanship lend a special aesthetic to furnishings and dĂŠcor, and bring authenticity to your home. Similarly, items that are made in America using an artisanal approach can elevate the character of a room when compared to things that are mass manufactured. For example, choose a single piece of artwork from a talented artist rather than multiple pieces of mass-produced art from a retailer. You can incorporate natural and hand-crafted materials into your spaces in countless ways, but these ideas can be achieved regardless of what your budget may be. Natural Stone When many people think about designing with stone, features like countertops or flooring come to

Incorporating stone in more unexpected ways can make an even bigger impression. You might choose a coffee table or end tables that are made of stone or feature stone accents. Accessorizing with stone also introduces an earthy appeal; think agate bookends or decorative items like sculptures. Hardwood Flooring The floor is often the largest design element of a room, so utilizing authentic materials for your flooring makes a strong statement about the overall tone and feel of the room. An artisan-crafted hardwood flooring option like Carlisle Wide Plank Floors is crafted individually - one board at a time - so the emphasis is on the natural beauty of the wood. You can choose a completely custom look, from wood species and grade to texture and color, or make your selection from a collection of popular tried-and-true finishes. Natural Fiber Textiles Careful attention to detail is important for a cohesive design, so be sure to keep thinking natural when selecting textiles. Linen and rough cotton fabrics bring distinctive textures that maintain an organic vibe. Natural textiles can also be quite durable, making them practical selections for oftenused spaces. Elements to consider include window treatments, fabric components of any furnishings and accents like pillows or throws. Jute or wool rugs and textile artwork may also work well with this motif. Plant Life Vegetation is a central element to landscape design, so when your goal is to create an inviting indoor space with a connection to nature and the outdoors, it makes sense to incorporate plants as part of your design. Options vary greatly, so it may take some work to narrow your selections. If the rest of your space reflects a specific region, choose plants native to that area. You’ll also want to consider lighting and watering requirements as well as the level of care you’re able to dedicate. Metals Adding metallic components like iron, copper, gold or silver to your space can bring everything from an edgy style to graceful beauty. While furnishings and accessories are common ways to incorporate metallic flair, also think in terms of lighting and hard features like railing spindles and window treatments. MAKEUP TIPS

n n n

YOU HAVE THE RING! You have the dress! Now it’s time to complete your look with your makeup. Your makeup should reflect the style and theme that you have in mind. Even if you are a soap and water girl, a little makeup expertly applied will help put the final touches on your wedding day look. Your makeup is only as beautiful as the skin underneath, so start taking good care of your skin at least 6 months in advance. At a minimum, invest in a good cleanser, exfoliator and moisturizer. Add a mask for your particular skin condition once a week.

JANUARY 2021

For best results, consider having a professional facial every 6 weeks. A spa facial usually includes a double cleanse, a specialized treatment mask and massage. Your skin is the largest organ of your body, so it deserves and needs the extra maintenance. Think of it as necessary as having your teeth cleaned! You will be photographed more on your wedding day than ever in your life. Not all makeup is photo-friendly. While mineral makeup is beautiful in person, it does not photograph well. Mineral makeup reflects light, so you may get some “whiteouts”,

also known as “flashbacks” in photos. Look for foundations that are labeled photofriendly. If in doubt, make sure that the foundation does not have sunscreen or a luminous quality. Sunscreen also has a reflective quality. You will want to carry a matte powder to touch up before photos. Here is a good order of application: n Prepare your skin with serum and moisturizer. n Start with a good primer. This will help your makeup go on more smoothly and stay on longer. n Use a concealer on any areas that need additional coverage- like under your eyes, or shadowy spots. n Apply your foundation with a foundation brush to get the best coverage and most natural application. n Set your makeup with a finishing powder, blur the appearance of fine lines, and absorb excess oil. Eye makeup is an area that you can have fun with! Think of it as another accessory. You can get a lot of ideas on Pinterest, but keep in mind that your eyes and coloring a unique. Be sure to pay attention to your eyebrows. Eyebrows frame the eyes. If you are unsure about your brows, be sure to see a brow professional for shaping and suggestions for brow makeup. Lash extensions or false lashes are a great way to add pizzazz! Contour and highlighting are a must for photos. Bronzer makes a great contour. Try to isolate a couple of key areas, such as under the cheek bones, along the sides of the nose and under the chin. Apply your cheek color and then apply a highlighter. Lip color is always a challenge. You want it to complement your coloring and stay on. Start with a lip primer. Then fill in your lips with a clear lip liner or one that matches your lip color. Apply a thin coat of lip color, set with your finishing powder, and reapply a second coat. You lip color should last until you eat. Be sure to take your lip color with you to touch up after you eat and before formal pictures. Set the entire look with a setting spray and you are ready to face the day! Covid tips: n Spray the inside of your facial mask with the setting spray in addition to spraying your face. This will help prevent the makeup from staining your mask. Your eyes are going to be the focus. Pay extra attention to your eyes! Highlighter applied in a “c” pattern around the eyes. This will brighten any shadows cast from the mask. n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

Wedding DRESS RULES TO BREAK

n n n

IT SEEMS THE MINUTE he slips the ring on your finger and you change your Facebook status to “engaged,” the claws come out. They are not vicious claws. They are not intended to harm. They’re just claws with opinions–very strong opinions about how exactly you should look on your wedding day. Well, don’t get scratched! Simply smile politely, nod and remember these wedding dress rules that are OK to break. Must you wear a veil? Who says you need a veil? Does the veil make the bride? Are you just another pretty gal in a white dress without a veil? The answers to these questions are as follows: No one that matters; No; No. Ditch the veil if you wish. It is not a requirement. It is not a rule. It could be a hindrance, in fact. It covers your face. It blows in the wind. It gets in the way. It is not necessary. Everyone will know you’re the bride because you’ll be the center of attention, the last to be escorted down the aisle, the one marrying the groom.

Wedding Dress Rules

n n n

You are the beautiful bride, even without a veil. Must you do the updo? No! A bun, a topknot, a French braid, a French twist or any other hairdo that requires multiple bobby pins is not, in fact, a state law in order to wed the love of your life. Rather, as it stands, a bride in any state may wear her hair in any fashion on her wedding day. Yes, that means you can wear your hair down, straight or in loose curls, with or without a fake flower adorning said “down-do.” Legal translation: You’re the bride. Wear your hair any which way you like. Must you wear something blue? Something old, something new and something borrowed can all be incorporated seamlessly. But, something blue? Blue? As in the color? Really? Yes, really, and no, you don’t have to. However, there are some sneaky ways to incorporate the blue rule. For example, brides have pasted blue stickers that say “I” and “Do” on the bottom of each of their shoes, which is both cute and clever, and a perfect photo opportunity. Still, it is not wholly “unbridal” to exclude something blue from your attire.

Is it bad luck? Probably not. If you’re really worried, take an informal survey of couples you know that have been married over twenty years. Ask the wives what their “something blue” was. Chances are half of them don’t remember and the other half didn’t go blue. Of course, if you’d rather not tempt the marital gods, just buy the blue “I” “Do” stickers and kick those heels up. Or something white, for that matter? No! True blue white does not look truly flattering on anyone. It’s too stark. It simply does not work with most skin tones. The solution? Go with variations of white, such as cream, ivory, bone, eggshell, candlelight, to name a few. The slightest deviation from white will ensure that you don’t look too pale or too green on the most important day of your life. Rather, this slight color difference can make all the difference, while still fair enough to make it clear who is becoming a Mrs. today. So, while the air is being swiped with opinions and claws, you don’t need to cover your ears or shut your eyes. Instead, post this article on your Facebook wall, let it do the talking for you, which is to say: I’m the bride and I’ll break the rules if I want to! And, I do. n

HIGH INVESTMENT RETURN Kitchens and bathrooms remain among the top picks for homeowners looking to upgrade because their functional contributions to the household can’t be overstated and they typically provide high return on investment. n n n

IF YOU’RE CONSIDERING a renovation project for either in-demand space, consider some of these on-trend ideas from Doug King, CR, MBA, owner of King Contracting, Inc. and åpresident of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. Kitchen Bigger functional spaces. Not only do many kitchen renovations result in added square footage, they also add practical features to make living and entertaining more comfortable and enjoyable. When it

comes to physical space, a popular choice is removing or relocating walls to make the room larger. This added space can be instrumental in adding an island or peninsula for bar seating, which many homeowners view as a necessity when it comes to entertaining. Other features like icemakers, tall wine refrigerators and walk-in pantries are high on the frequent request list. Another growing trend is a kitchen designed for two, complete with a second full-size sink,

dishwasher and microwave drawer, along with a larger island. Clever storage. Making the most of storage space has always been a top desire, and homeowners are getting increasingly clever about how to maximize their cabinetry. Drawer organizers are in high demand, along with pull-out waste baskets that hide recycling bins within. Another popular approach is large base cabinets with pivoting shelving mechanisms for storing large items like mixers and other taller countertop appliances. Making use of every inch of space is common; even the toe-kick area for drawers are proving useful to hold smaller items or put kidfriendly essentials in easy reach. Feature-rich appliances. Appliance manufacturers are adding all kinds of bells and whistles, and those features are increasingly attractive to homeowners. Upper-end appliances are becoming more mainstream as homeowners discover features the more expensive models offer for ease of use and comfort. Larger freezer and column-style refrigerators are especially growing in popularity. Bathroom Spa-like setting. One long-term trend that is still in top demand for the master bath is design that mimics a serene spa. This plays out in cooler colors like white, blues and grays. Glass tiles are taking on a bigger role with many homeowners using them as artistic focal points in showers or opting for pebble-like tiles that spill from walls onto the floor. Upscale practicality. Little touches that may have once gone unnoticed are now trending as opportunities to add elements of style. For example, curbless showers with offset lineal drains are preferred to traditional centered circular versions. Similarly, homeowners are upping the ante with lighting such as fixtures integrated with fans and mirrors, and even below floating vanities for ambient light at night. One more place you might find lighting: on the bidet, which is also an increasingly hot addition in the master bath. A splash of tech. Whether it’s used to control smart features or simply add entertainment like TV or soothing music, technology has a permanent place on the list of bathroom trends. The available features make it easy to make a full escape from the daily grind of life. HAVE YOU noticed how important that word “priority” has become? Turn to the sports section of the newspaper and a football coach is saying, “Our first priority for winning is....” Turn to the business page and an industrialist is explaining the No. 1 priority that made for the success of his product. Turn to the news and a judge is addressing the jury: “Your No. 1 priority in assessing the case should be ....” Comes election time and the candidate for a high government office intones with pompous sincerity, “If I am elected, I can assure you my No. 1 priority will be honesty in government, etc.” According to Webster, priority pertains to “order of preference based on urgency.” With that as a basis, how important might it be if we chose an invisible priority that was bound to produce a visible effect? Suppose that as an experiment we made things of the

Spirit our priority. Think what it could do for our problems if we chose God as our priority. There are those who would object to such a suggestion as totally unrealistic and impractical. Their amusement, however, would not necessarily prove them right nor prove wrong those who chose God as a priority. How does one establish God as a priority in one’s daily routine? It is recognizing the one Power and Presence within to which you can always turn long before it is a necessary “preference based on urgency.” A Bible verse that neonlights the closeness of God as a deciding factor in everything you do or think is found in Job 32: 8—“there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.” A strong support to that verse is the Nazarene carpenter’s “I can of mine own self do nothing—The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.”

You have a problem that defies human solution. You have spent sleepless nights, tossing fretfully and futilely. You have struggled through daytime hours that brought no peace and no answer. Finally, in desperation, you turned to the Father within. With the simple faith of a child in a loving parent, you said, “Father, I don’t know what to do. I have nowhere to turn but to you.” With that decision made, you took a deep breath and relaxed. You accepted the truth that a Power greater than any problem could possibly be had taken over. You had made God your No. 1 priority and you were resting in the “peace that passeth understanding.” God, our No. 1 priority! What a way for America to retrieve her lost standards! What a way to restore honesty in government, morality in social behavior, decency in literature and wholesomeness on the screen! God, our No. 1 priority! n 29
