Preparing For Your Next
SNOWMOBILE ADVENTURE n n n
AS TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS and popular trends like staycations have changed the way many people escape from their day-to-day lives, rediscovering classic, outdoor winter activities like snowmobiling can provide a simple way to spend time with loved ones. In fact, BRP–a global leader in the world of powersports and boating, and manufacturer of the Ski-Doo snowmobile –is forecasting a rise in popularity of the pastime among new riders this year. “Snowmobiling can be an exhilarating way to experience and take in the beauty of winter,” said Pascal Vincent, director of global product management, Ski-Doo. “To ensure a smooth and fun experience, it’s important to be prepared before hitting the trails. By following these tips, riders can take advantage of fun on the snow, get in some healthy escape therapy, recharge their mental batteries and practice social distancing to create memories that will last a lifetime.”
JANUARY 2022
Check if you need a license. Licensing requirements vary by individual state, but all necessary information is available through your state snowmobile association, state natural resource office or highway department. For example, many states recommend against drivers under the age of 16 and require passengers to be at least 6 years old. Understand your snowmobile before you hit the snow. Spend some time learning the controls and functions of your snowmobile so you can hit the trail with confidence. The experts at Ski-Doo recommend checking your operator’s guide, knowing your fuel level and understanding best operational practices before heading out. Some areas also require a safety class. Your state snowmobile organizations may offer safety training classes that teach riding skills, how to handle emergencies on the trail, laws and regulations, and hazards to avoid, among other topics.

Wear the right gear. The right riding gear is as much about comfort as it is about safety. Essentials include high pants or bibs (pants that extend up your chest and back), jackets, gloves, boots, goggles and helmets. Even if not required in all locales, a Department of Transportation-approved helmet can provide warmth and protection as well as fog-free vision. Learning to layer is also essential for maximum comfort. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a mid-layer that provides insulation but breathes then an outer shell to protect from the elements. Most snowmobile dealers offer a full line of clothing specifically designed and manufactured to

keep you warm and help withstand winter weather. For additional safety, always keep the tether cord connected to you. Plan out your route and share the trail with others. Respect everyone on the snow and adopt a fun and safe riding style. Learn traditional hand signals for turning, slowing and stopping, and stay to the right when approaching hills and turns. Be mindful of signs and reminders to slow down. Planning your route in advance can help you stay out of restricted areas. Consider downloading an app like BRP GO!, which uses connected technology to provide navigation for unusual and faraway routes. The app also allows you to safely track fellow riders and download content directly to your phone if service may be limited. Pay attention to the weather and protect the environment. It’s important to check the forecast and trail conditions before heading out. The wind chill or other conditions like snow blindness or whiteouts can make riding less enjoyable. Also avoid riding on rivers or other ice-covered surfaces that may be unstable. Leave your playground and surroundings cleaner than you found them. Don’t throw trash in the snow and respect the animals in the area that call it home. Protecting nature and the outdoors can help keep winter sports and recreational activities viable for decades to come. Cocoa Tree confectionery Cocoa Tree’s owner, Kishoree, talks about her business. n n n
How did Cocoa Tree get started and how long have you been in business? Plans were in place long before I signed the lease in January of 2020. I received the keys to the door on March 1 and we all know what happened after that! My first sale was June 20th, so I celebrated my 18th month anniversary just a few weeks ago. What do you most Love about your business? The creativity. New ideas and techniques are cropping up all the time and it’s fun to experiment and learn new things. What would you like people to know about Cocoa Tree and what message would you like to share with them? Like many small businesses, we depend on our community to keep us alive and thriving. We love what we do and we want everyone to share in that enthusiasm. What are the biggest compliments customers give you and what are you most proud of? Believe it or not, being compared to chocolatiers such as Norman Love is a HUGE compliment. It’s something we’ve heard more than a few times and it’s both humbling and flattering every time, but the biggest compliment we can get is repeat business. That is what really tells us that we are leaving a positive impression.

With Valentines Day coming up, what customer favorites do you anticipate? We are known for our salted caramel, so I anticipate major sales of our turtles and salted caramel bonbons. What other are other holiday or seasonal favorites? Over the Christmas holiday we sold hundreds of cocoa bombs (which we will continue to sell through the winter months), and of course our holidays themed Oreos and macarons are always a big hit.
“I think there are humorous misnomers such as the difference between a bonbon and a truffle, and perhaps the misconception that chocolate is a simple ingredient to work with.”

How many employees work with you? What are you most grateful for? My employees! They are the ones who keep the factory running smoothly, especially when I can’t be there. There is no replacement for dependable, trustworthy staff who are eager to learn and who take a personal interest in the success of the business. What changes have you seen over the years since you’ve been open? The biggest change I’ve seen is within me. I have learned to be more patient and to delegate more. I’ve learned to trust the process I established and the people I hired so that I can stand back and give my staff the space and autonomy they’ve earned. That sort of ‘handsoff’ approach to management was never something I imagined I would be capable of. What are some of the common myths you come across in your business? I think there are humorous misnomers such as the difference between a bonbon and a truffle, and perhaps the misconception that chocolate is a simple ingredient to work with. There is also a common myth that you must attend culinary school in order to be a Chef. (To find out the truth behind these misnomers, misconceptions and myths, you have to attend my Chocolate 101 class). Who/what can you credit for the success of Cocoa Tree? There are SO many people, but the #1 person is my husband- no question. Cocoa Tree would not exist were it not for his support, patience and encouragement. n Cocoa Tree Confectionery 1330 West Mequon Road, Mequon. 262-643-4692. www.Cocoa-tree.com. SHIFTING WELLNESS 2 2 0 2 ATTITUDES FOR n n n
JANUARY 2022
IN ADJUSTING TO the constraints of the pandemic, many Americans had to improvise where and how they work out. After months of adapting to a “gym anywhere” mentality and learning to accommodate more flexible workout schedules, this new fitness mindset is inspiring some larger trends for healthier living. “We’ve learned that wellness is not onesize fits all, and that it’s achieved by small habits like regular hydration that can really impact how you feel throughout the day,” said celebrity fitness trainer Harley Pasternak, MsC. “Collectively, nourishing both body and mind together as one makes holistic health a sustainable lifestyle.” Pasternak and the experts at Propel Fitness Water are forecasting five fitness and wellness trends to watch for in 2022. Accountability Buddies When gym closures ran rampant, folks leaned on others for inspiration to get moving, so it’s no surprise working out in pairs (or more) is a continued way to focus on fitness. Feelings of burnout may be common heading into 2022, so having a partner who gives you a healthy sense of camaraderie and competition can help push you to show up on days when you’d rather rest and stay committed to your goals. It also provides a sounding board when you need suggestions for nutritious recipes or fresh at-home cardio ideas. Versatility in Gym Spaces and Schedules When a large segment of the workforce started working from home, the rituals of

before-and after-work gym visits fell by the wayside. People grew more accustomed to improvising where they work out, whether it was their neighbor’s garage, their living room or a running path in the city. As exercisers are less beholden to studio or gym schedules, the “gym anywhere” mentality is a level of flexibility many are holding on to, even as they ease back into more normal work routines.
Fitness goals are an essential component, but so is supporting your mental health as well as being cognizant of what you’re putting into your body. When each piece is well taken care of, your body is better able to work like a well-oiled machine. Health in Small, Achievable Doses This trend is all about recognizing health transformations don’t happen overnight, and even modest steps can make a big difference in how you feel throughout the day. One example is paying more attention to your hydration. If you aren’t properly hydrated, few other things tend to go right either. Small habits like throwing Propel Powder Packs into your gym, work or school bag can make a difference. Filled with enough electrolytes to replace what is lost in sweat, they are handy for on-the-go hydration and are easy to add to a water bottle. Wellness Goals vs. Fitness Committing to overall wellness is more about lifestyle changes than numbers like weight loss or muscle mass. People embracing this trend are forgoing numeric goals based on performance in the gym or on the scale and instead emphasizing outcomes that affect life, nourishing both body and mind together as one. Fitness goals are an essential component, but so is supporting your mental health as well as being cognizant of what you’re putting into your body. When each piece is well taken care of, your body is better able to work like a welloiled machine. Low-Impact Workouts This year, walking treadmill challenges gained virality on social media, marking the increasing popularity of workouts that are low impact yet effective. Getting moving is the key, even if it means taking your tempo down. You don’t need to do hours of HIIT every day to see results. In fact, less time- and energy-intensive workouts are easier to sustain and can often yield the same, or better, results. Mindful tips for the New Year A few ways to incorporate self care into your routine. n Start your morning off by writing down 3 things you’re grateful for each morning. n Find mini moments throughout your day or week to take time for yourself. Meditate, take a lap around the block for some fresh air or sit in the sun any chance you get. Schedule these breaks into your calendar. n Find time to exercise. It’s not selfish, it’s sacred and you deserve it. Even a 10 minute walk can help rest your mind. n End your day by journaling. Keep a pen and note pad in your nightstand and take 5 minutes to purge your day. The good you witnessed, what inspired you, what you might be questioning, what is motivating you? This simple exercise can help bring clarity and focus with you into the following day.

WEDDED
BLISS In Times Like This
n n n
DURING PRE-COVID TIMES, wedding concerns like venue capacity had far more to do with budget and vision than with the health and safety of guests. It’s a different world today, but with some careful planning you can still find ways to safely celebrate your love.
As the vows say, marriage is in good times and in bad. It may simply require some flexibility and creativity to make your dream day a reality. Enlist help from an experienced coordinator. If you weren’t planning to use a wedding coordinator, the pandemic is a compelling reason to reconsider. Keeping track of changing mandates and how they affect gatherings, crowd sizes and more is a job in its own right. Allowing your coordinator to keep tabs on the latest recommendations, and adjust arrangements with your vendors accordingly, may save a great deal of time and frustration. Be realistic about your invite list. A year ago, it would have been unthinkable to create a tiered guest list and even consider making cuts even after invites go out. Today, that decision may

be out of your hands. Rather than waiting until you get news that you’ll have to make cuts, take time now, with a level head and less emotion affecting your decisions, to segment your list. Determine who absolutely must be present as you exchange vows then expand in increments. Your coordinator or venue contact can help you determine thresholds (e.g., 25, 50 or 100 guests) based on the guidelines in your community.
Understand expectations. Vendors are required to enforce local guidelines, so ensure you’re clear on what measures they will implement on your day. This may include everything from masks and distancing to whether you’re allowed to use a dance floor during the reception. Keep guests informed. If you haven’t already, create a blog or send out regular updates about wedding plans to guests. If circumstances require you to uninvite someone, be conscious of timing and give plenty of notice so travel can be canceled, if necessary. As the event approaches, be clear about expectations so guests can arrive prepared or bow out if they’re not comfortable with what you’re planning.

Make safety convenient. Providing masks, gloves and sanitizer can all go a long way to help make guests feel more secure at your event. A personalized hand sanitizer holder might even be a practical gift that guests can use and think fondly of your wedding day. Forego traditions, for now. The pandemic won’t last forever, but while it’s still here, consider skipping high-contact traditions like photos that bring multiple households together or a receiving line where everyone is in close contact. One alternative is to plan a mini-wedding (or even elope) now, and save the bigger celebration for later, when everyone can honor your marriage more safely. GOD’S CORNER n n n

IN THESE DAYS when the stuffiness of the English language becomes at times insufferable, when the dull verbiage one endures during, perchance, congressional hearings is totally unnecessary, it is refreshing to turn to the most widely read book in the history of the world and find an important truth simply stated— “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.” Did you ever stop to realize that a soft answer does turn away wrath and that grievous words do stir up anger? Let us assume that you and your neighbor have had a slight misunderstanding over so insignificant an incident as a barking dog. There is no doubt that the barking of a dog can become irritating. However, is it not conceivable that a line of communication could be established by having a friendly chat with the owner of the dog in which you
by Ger trude M. Puelicher
indicated that you liked dogs, but that constant barking was a bit hard on the nerves? Almost any reasonable person will react properly to a kindly approach. Are not many of today’s problems the result of a “Believe me, I’m going to tell them off” attitude, no matter what the circumstances? Granted we are living in times of tension--need we increase the tensions further with dissensions? There are many instances when a gentle reply in an awkward situation can avert a sudden flare-up that might result in a most uncomfortable neighborhood feud, or an unhappy family disagreement. It takes only one person who is willing to forego his sense of self-justification to give the soft answer that turns away wrath. We are living in an age of dissension, a tinder box that explodes at the least provocation. Someone shouts “Discrimination” and the cry
reverberates like a wolf howl. Welfare rights, labors’ rights, parents’ rights, children’s rights—all legitimate rights when sanely sought—yet how truly could we who listen say with Mark Anthony in his famous soliloquy over the death of Caesar, “O judgment: thou art fled to brutish beasts, And men have lost their reason.” In the everyday world of home, school and community life, strife would be avoided if we could but halt the angry retort, the smart rejoiner. The Nazarene carpenter taught us a principle; our need is to use it. “Love is the fulfilling of the law” was his message. There is nothing saccharine about that message. All it means is that we must maintain a strong, impersonal love, not only for our family and our friends, but for our enemies and all mankind. A world-encircling love could abolish war for all time among all nations. n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S
ATTRACTING BIRDS to Your Backyard n n n
WITH ALL THE CONSTRAINTS people lived through in 2021, many turned to their own backyards–nature, in particular–for hope, solace, wonder and even entertainment. Despite the worldwide crisis, nature’s normalcy remained intact; flowers continued to bloom, bees continued to pollinate and birds continued to fly. Feeding birds can be enjoyable and provide stress relief for all who partake. A University of Exeter study, focused on nature’s impact on humans in suburban and urban areas, found lower levels of depression, anxiety and stress were associated with the number of birds people saw during afternoons at home. People “felt relaxed and connected to nature when they watched birds in their gardens,” researchers said. These feelings increased with the level of bird feeding in the yard. For millions working and schooling from home, this stress reduction was an unintended bonus. Data from 2021 shows sales of bird feed, feeders, nesting boxes and bird houses spiked as interest in backyard birds soared while people spent more time at home. Feeders A variety of bird feeder types placed at different heights attract more birds than one feeder featuring one seed

type. Start with two feeder types that accommodate most feed options. Bowl feeders serve not only seeds but also dried mealworms, fruit and suet. An option like Cole’s Bountiful Bowl Feeder comes with an adjustable dome cover you can raise or lower to prevent larger birds and squirrels from getting to food and protect it from rain. Traditional tube feeders are all-purpose options for bird feeding, especially for small birds that cling. For example, the Terrific Tube Feeder is made with state-ofthe-art materials to prevent warping and discoloration and includes a quick-clean, removable base to make cleaning fast and easy. Just push a button and the bottom of the feeder pops off for easy access to the inside. Rinse the feeder with soapy water, dunk it into a water-bleach solution at a concentration of 9-to-1, rinse, dry and reattach the bottom. Regular cleaning of feeders is essential for preventing mold, germs and disease. Popular Foods Birdseed: Not all birdseed is created equal. Look for quality blends without cheap filler like red millet and oats. All-natural seed containing no chemicals or mineral oil is safe and more appealing to birds. Top seed picks include all-natural black oil sunflower and Cole’s
“Hot Meats” (sunflower meats infused with habanero chili peppers that birds love and squirrels dislike). Or an option like Special Feeder blend, packed with favorites including black oil sunflower, sunflower meats and pecans, attracts the greatest number of wild birds. Offering a wide variety, Cole’s feed is researched and specifically formulated to attract certain bird species, the largest number of birds and the greatest variety of birds. Insects and Worms: A healthy, lush lawn is one of the best ways to feed birds that prefer insects and worms. You can supplement birds’ diets by serving dried mealworms in a packaged variety that’s easier to feed than live mealworms. Mealworms are packed with energy and contain essential nutrients, fat and protein. Fresh Fruit: Apples, orange halves and bananas are favored fruits. Suet: Perfect for insect-eating birds, suet is a high-fat food that provides abundant calories and rich nutrition. Using the right feeders and high-quality feed can enhance your backyard and entice more birds, bringing stress relief and enjoyment.
