Valentine’s Day Around theWorld s
This one’s for all the lovers–the ones who look forward to 14th February every year so that they can bask in the romance of it all. Whether you have a sweetheart this year or not, you might find a little inspiration in how Valentine’s Day is celebrated around the world.
IT’S BEEN SAID that love is a dangerous game, so employ these techniques at your own risk. Some may not translate across cultural boundaries, but nonetheless, it’s interesting to gain inspiration from other countries.
The exact origins of Valentine’s Day are unclear. The most famous legend say the Saint Valentine was a priest who performed weddings for Roman soldiers after the Emperor outlawed marriage among their ranks. Once he was discovered he was sent to a tragic end.
Whether this legend has any basis in the truth is anyone’s guess. But it remains that many countries still celebrate Valentine’s Day in some shape or form today–even if it is with their own unique traditions of “day of love”. So stop and smell the roses, as we run through the 10 Valentine’s Day traditions from around the world.
Argentina
The Dia de los Enamorados (Valentine’s Day) in Argentina is a fairly low key affair – certainly not as big as it is in the UK or the US. A couple might have a romantic dinner or celebration by spending quality time together, but the real answer to Valentine’s Day takes place on “Sweetness Week” or “Semana de la Dulzuara” on the 1-7 of July.
Many people accuse Valentine’s Day of being manufactured by corporations to sell more products, and in Argentina’s case that is actually true. This week-long tradition started out as a single day, but their largest sweet manufacturer and the association of candy distributors inspired people enough to make it longer. Luckily, candy is not too expensive so it should only take a small transfer to make sure your sweetheart gets their fill! Lovers of this tradition will often exchange sweets for a kiss with one another. Best not
to wear much lipstick during this week as it’s bound to get smudged.
France
In the past, France used to celebrate Valentine’s Day with “une loterie de’amour,” or “a lottery of love.” The aim was to pair up single men and women in a matchmaking game. Men looking for a partner would be on one side of the street, and women would be on the other. They would then call out tone another through the window to be set up on a date. Now Valentine’s Day in France revolves around giving gifts. French florists make a week’s worth of turnover in a single day on
WEAR AMasterpiece
Valentine’s, with 80% of their sales being roses. So your sweetheart is just one transfer away from receiving a beautiful bouquet!
Japan
Valentine’s Day was first introduced in Japan by 1930’s confectionery adverts. Although the holiday is relatively new in Japan, the Japanese still celebrate it with a unique twist.
It’s expected that ladies are the ones who have to give chocolates to their sweethearts. The type of chocolate given depends on the recipient. There are different kinds for your romantic partner, bosses, female friends or even for yourself as a treat.
This may sound a little one-sided, but don’t worry – men get in on the fun too, a month later. Their festivities are called “White Day” on 14 March. Better late than never, right? Men are expected to give gifts worth three times the value of the chocolates they were given on Valentine’s so it might just be worth the wait!
One tradition that dates back to the 16th century is when people would give each other hand-carved wooden spoons. Its origins are thought to be from Wales’ maritime history when sailors would carve these ornate gifts during their long voyages at sea.
Slovenia
Slovenia has two official holidays dedicated to love and romance. The first, Valentine’s Day, is marked by the locals as the first day to work in the fields. Tradition dictates that this is a great time of new growth, as plants begin to sprout on this day and birds of the fields propose to each other.
The other day dedicated to romance is Slovenia is St. Gregory’s Day or “Gregorjevo”. Legend has it that St. Gregory tossed a lamp into a body of water, which caused the days to grow longer and lighter for the rest of the year. In honour of this tradition, children in Slovenia now build boats to float down rivers.
Ghana
Valentine’s Day in Ghana is all about chocolate! Sure, they have the usual fare–teddy bears, flowers and red clothing–but chocolate takes center stage. Since 2007, Ghana has celebrated Valentine’s Day as National Chocolate Day, which is fitting since the country is the second largest producer of cocoa in the world. The hope behind this national day was to increase tourism to the country and promote use of their cocoa products.
On 14 February, you can attend performances; music events and restaurant

Bulgaria
In Bulgaria, Valentine’s Day overlaps with another traditional Bulgarian celebration –Trifon Zarezan.
This celebration is dedicated to Bulgarian winegrowers, innkeepers and gardeners. The holiday is in honour of a famous healer, Saint Trifon. The tradition involves food, with freshly baked bread loaves plus chicken stuffed with rice and bulgur wheat.
Food and a jar of wine is then taken to the vineyard where a “fertility rite” is performed and wine is poured on the ground. The “King of the Vineyard” is then chosen and they are covered with wreaths.
However, it should be noted that this is a very old tradition, and now it’s more common for people to gather with friends for a drink. Since these two holidays happen at the same time, there’s fun for everyone – couples can go for a romantic meal while friends can go to the pub! Either way, a money transfer will make sure their romantic holiday is extra special.
Although it’s a relatively new holiday for the country, Germany does celebrate Valentine’s Day or Valentinstag, as they call it. You’ll find all the usual fare like cards and chocolates.
Wales
Traditionally, Wales celebrates their unique day of love on the 25th January with the “St. Dwynwen’s Fay.” Saint Dwynewn was a fourthcentury Welsh princess who was very unlucky in love, so she became a nun. She then would pray that other people would find romance more easily than she did. Now she is the Welsh Patron Saint of Lovers.
St. Dwywne’s Day is similar to Valentine’s Day in that it is centered around love. People exchange cards and gifts, as well as spending time with their loved ones.
One tradition that dates back to the 16th century is when people would give each other hand-carved wooden spoons. Its origins are thought to be from Wales’ maritime history when sailors would carve these ornate gifts during their long voyages at sea. You can still purchase these “lovespoons” today and they are considered to highly sentimental gifts.
So choose wisely and send your sweetheart

Colombia
Colombia is another country that has a unique approach to Valentine’s Day. Dia de Amor Y Amistad (Day of Love and Friendship) is celebrated on the third Saturday of September every year in Colombia. As you’re walking down the streets of Colombia’s cities around this time, you may see many hearts placed in the windows of shops and bars.
Dia de Amor y Amistad was originally inspired by Valentine’s Day, but the day moved to September because Colombia has no other national holidays during that month. The idea was that merchants could sell more chocolate and roses in what would have otherwise been a dead period for sales.
The traditions on this day are very similar to Valentine’s Day. Think: chocolates, rose, and romantic dinners. All of which can be covered by a quick money transfer from us. Other Latin American countries like Bolivia, Brazil also have similar days on 23 July and 12 June, respectively.
Germany
Although it’s a relatively new holiday for the country, Germany does celebrate Valentine’s Day or Valentinstag, as they call it. You’ll find all the usual fare like cards and chocolates. However, it should be noted that it is mostly a holiday for adults and is not celebrated by children at all.
If you’re an animal lover, you may also be delighted to find that many of these gifts and cards are emblazoned with little pigs on the front of them. Or, if you have more of a sweet tooth, you may enjoy the large, heart-shaped gingerbread cookies that have messages of love written out in their frosting. Receiving one of these from your beloved is a classic Valentine’s Day tradition.
Spain
Valentine’s Day falls during carnival season in Spain. While it is celebrated in this country, their main day dedicated to love comes much later in the year. In particular for the people of Valencia, who celebrate the Day of Saint Denis on the 9 of October. Saint Denis is the patron saint of lovers in Valencia.
This day is a public holiday that’s marked by many festivities and colourful costume parades in the main plaza of every town and village throughout the region. One of the customs during these festivities is to give Mocadora, silken scarfs containing marzipan pastries.
Making Giving a part of Their Lives
Tony Wendorf, of Tony Wendorf & Associates, First Weber Realtors, carries his longstanding passion for charitable giving to the highest level. This past year, he gave to 16 different organizations, and in the year to come, he hopes to continue to expand this base of positive impact in the community.
n n n
WENDORF CREDITS his Catholic faith for much of the inspiration and drive behind his charitable activities. In his words, he is “pretty deeply involved in the Catholic church,” and closely follows the Christian tenet and Catholic social teaching of a collective social responsibility to preserve the dignity of our fellow humans, especially those in need.
Wendorf has been a member of St. Anthony on the Lake in Pewaukee for over 30 years, and carries the positive impact of this involvement on his life to this day. In his high school and college days, he enjoyed actively participating in committees and ministries at his church, and in the last ten years, he has been proud to add a greater financial contribution to his work there, in addition to
continued gifting of his time. In Wendorf’s words, “It started out with charitable use of my time, energy, resources and prayer, and turned into an opportunity to give financially and make a meaningful impact.”
Wendorf incorporated the Christian cross into the letter “t” in his familiar “TW” brand, sharing with the larger community the wellspring of positive energy he draws from his active faith. He carries the Catholic teachings into all of his endeavors, particularly those involving charitable activities and giving. He thrives on reaching out to others, forging connections, and aiming to better the lives of those in his community and the world around him. “I see it very much as an obligation, and something we’re very proud to be able to do,” Wendorf explained. He holds the
highest regard for maintaining the dignity of each person, and sees his charitable activities as one way to further this goal. “More than anything, it’s a call, a responsibility to help our community and participate in bettering it,” he said.
“We try to be very intentional in our giving,” Wendorf explained. He gives to some organizations consistently each year; sometimes, this involves a donation of his personal time, and other times, it includes a financial gift. As someone who has always been “attracted to the concept of giving to make a difference,” Tony Wendorf says he “always [tries] to, if asked, give something.”
Wendorf strives to grow his giving activities in conjunction with his business. Previously, he gave $100 donations for every closing he had, totaling $13,000 recently. This year, he has established a new challenge in his platform for giving. For any client who sends him a referral that results in a closed real estate deal, Wendorf plans to donate both to that client’s charity of choice as well as to the chosen charity of the referred friend. He explained, “The more business we get, the more impact we can make.” He envisions building his charitable impact into the future, stating, “Ultimately, we want to be able to continue to give more and more. I’d love to see us hit that 50,000 [dollar] mark and even 100,000 mark; even in the next five years, [to give] 100,000 dollars back to the community.”
Giving to his community is an integral part of Tony Wendorf’s life. Some of his most memorable honors in this realm have been having the opportunity to be the presenting sponsor for a meaningful event. In his words, “I don’t really do a whole lot ‘little’ in my life.”
Also essential to this life path is Wendorf’s astute recognition that his own blessings are an avenue for sharing with others. He notes that “the financial rewards we’ve been given can bless others. If money comes to you, it just sits there, but if we can spread it out, we can help others.”
For those who wish to make giving a part of their lives, Tony Wendorf encourages a mindset open to sharing at any level. Whether donating time, service, or money, no gift is too small. He often notices that people hesitate to give because they worry that their gift may not be sizeable enough to make a difference. But Wendorf knows that any donation can have a positive impact for someone in need. “Start where you’re at—anything makes a difference— [there is] no amount too little or too big.” n
WeddingMAKEUP TIPS
YOU HAVE THE RING! You have the dress! Now it’s time to complete your look with your makeup. Your makeup should reflect the style and theme that you have in mind. Even if you are a soap and water girl, a little makeup expertly applied will help put the final touches on your wedding day look.
Your makeup is only as beautiful as the skin underneath, so start taking good care of your skin at least 6 months in advance. At a minimum, invest in a good cleanser, exfoliator and moisturizer. Add a mask for your particular skin condition once a week.
For best results, consider having a professional facial every 6 weeks. A spa facial usually includes a double cleanse, a specialized treatment mask and massage. Your skin is the largest organ of your body, so it deserves and needs the extra maintenance. Think of it as necessary as having your teeth cleaned!
You will be photographed more on your wedding day than ever in your life. Not all makeup is photo-friendly. While mineral makeup is beautiful in person, it does not photograph well. Mineral makeup reflects light, so you may get some “whiteouts”,

STORAGE SCHEMES For Small
Spaces
NO MATTER HOW cramped and cluttered your living space may be, you can almost always find a spot or two for extra storage. It’s often just a matter of getting creative and utilizing a few clever solutions. Consider these simple ideas to create some extra space in oft-used rooms:
Kitchen
n Metal rods with hanging hooks can create storage space on your blank walls. Use them to hang coffee cups, cooking utensils, dish towels or pots and pans.
n Magnetic strips mounted on the wall or the inside of a cabinet door can be a simple way to hang knives and free up counter space normally taken up by a knife block.
n If your countertop is cluttered with small spice containers and oil bottles, elevate them with a decorative cake stand. Place small jars below and top with pretty decanters and additional spices.
n If you’re using prime cabinet space for items you only use once a year, such as holiday cake pans or a big serving bowl you pull out for parties, consider storing them in the attic or a closet instead.
Bathroom
n Instead of hanging just one towel bar on the back of the bathroom door, hang multiple to maximize your drying space.
n Most modern cabinetry has adjustable shelving. If you haven’t customized the heights of your shelving to accommodate different sized bottles and containers, give it a try.
n A three-tiered fruit basket might seem perfect for the kitchen, but it’s also a handy way to store bathroom essentials right beside the sink.
n Flour and sugar canisters can also be repurposed in the bathroom to keep makeup, toiletries, cleaning supplies and soaps contained. Make sure to buy bins that stack easily.
Bedroom
n Nix those nightstands and hang small shelves on either side of the bed. This cuts down on the clutter you can keep and makes cleaning underneath a breeze.
n Rolling bins that fit under the bed are perfect for storing linens, out-of-season clothing and children’s toys. They’re also the perfect way to slide building block projects
out of sight without destroying your child’s latest masterpiece.
n Closets with a single hanging rod are one of the biggest space-wasters in the bedroom. Double their storage capacity by hanging a second rod or shelf below shorter jackets and shirts.
Find more ideas to maximize your space at eLivingtoday.com. n
HAVE YOU NOTICED how important that word “priority” has become? Turn to the sports section of the newspaper and a football coach is saying, “Our first priority for winning is….” Turn to the business page and an industrialist is explaining the No. 1 priority that made for the success of his product. Turn to the news and a judge is addressing the jury: “Your No. 1 priority in assessing the case should be ….” Comes election time and the candidate for a high government office intones with pompous sincerity, “If I am elected, I can assure you my No. 1 priority will be honesty in government, etc.”
According to Webster, priority pertains to “order of preference based on urgency.” With that as a basis, how important might it be if we chose an invisible priority that was bound to produce a visible effect? Suppose that as an experiment we made things of the
Spirit our priority. Think what it could do for our problems if we chose God as our priority. There are those who would object to such a suggestion as totally unrealistic and impractical. Their amusement, however, would not necessarily prove them right nor prove wrong those who chose God as a priority.
How does one establish God as a priority in one’s daily routine? It is recognizing the one Power and Presence within to which you can always turn long before it is a necessary “preference based on urgency.” A Bible verse that neon lights the closeness of God as a deciding factor in everything you do or think is found in Job 32: 8 “there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.” A strong support to that verse is the Nazarene carpenter’s, “I can of mine own self do nothing—The Father
that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.”
You have a problem that defies human solution. You have spent sleepless nights, tossing fretfully and futilely. You have struggled through daytime hours that brought no peace and no answer. Finally, in desperation, you turned to the Father within. With the simple faith of a child in a loving parent, you said, “Father, I don’t know what to do. I have nowhere to turn but to you.” With that decision made, you took a deep breath and relaxed. You accepted the truth that a Power greater than any problem could possibly be had taken over. You had made God your No. 1 that passeth understanding.” God, our No. 1 priority! What a way for America to retrieve her lost standards! What a way to restore honesty in government, morality in social behavior, decency in literature and wholesomeness on the screen!
God, our No. 1 priority! n
