FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN GENERATIONS The St. Ann Center

for Intergenerational Care

by An n e Kaiser n n n

CULTIVATING FRIENDSHIPS between generations brings health benefits to both the young and the elderly. Many people are fortunate to share special times with a beloved grandparent or grandchild, and the positive energy and healthy memories that these interactions create can both fortify and sustain through an individual’s lifetime. For some individuals, though, extended family may be absent or may live far away. Fortunately, Milwaukee is home to a unique, award-winning space in which to cultivate healthy intergenerational interactions. This special organization, the St. Ann’s Center for Intergenerational Care, operates two facilities in the greater Milwaukee area. St. Ann Center’s Stein Campus is located at 2801 East Morgan Avenue, in Milwaukee, and the Bucyrus Campus is located at 2450 West North Avenue, also in Milwaukee. The St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care evolved through the insight and dedication of Sister Edna Lonergan, OSF, the Center’s founder and president. In the early 1980s, Sister Edna witnessed the alarming trend toward placing older adults in institutional settings, frequently before they required round-theclock medical care. In 1983, hoping to help reverse this trend (Wisconsin had become the national leader in premature institutionalization of the elderly), Sister Edna opened St. Ann Adult Day Care through her religious order, the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi. The new care center quickly became popular. In a defining moment of St. Ann Adult Day Care, Sister Edna invited her staff, many of whom were single moms, to bring their children to work rather than stay home with them and miss work when school was out. “The interaction between the youngsters and older adults was magical,” said Lori Grzybowski, Public Relations Coordinator for both sites of the current St. Ann Center. “Sister Edna realized they gave each other a sense of purpose—and more,” Grzybowski explained.

Opening St. Ann Adult Day Care to a mix of ages proved the perfect environment for an additional catalyst to the formation of the current St. Ann Center. According to Grzybowski, Sister Edna witnessed an older client’s oncoming seizure subside when a three-year-old daughter of one of the staff came to sit in his lap and hug him. “Sister Edna decided right then that if she ever built a new day care center, it would be intergenerational,” Grzybowski said. Sister Edna Lonergan’s dream became a

reality in 1999 when she opened the St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care on Milwaukee’s South Side, at 2801 East Morgan Avenue. Today known as the St. Ann Center’s Stein Campus, this center was one of the first of its kind in the nation, a “shared-site intergenerational day care for children and adults,” Grzybowski said. “At St. Ann Center, our goal is to provide essential community-based services,” explained Sister Edna Lonergan, OSF, founder and president of St. Ann Center. “We want to be there—whether for you, your mother, your father, your sister, your brother of your

child—in whatever way we can be of help,” Sister Edna said. Guided by its Franciscan roots, in Grzybowski’s words, the St. Ann Center embraces “creating a caring community, showing compassion and making peace.” St. Ann Center serves children aged six weeks to 12 years, adults with disabilities, individuals with dementia, and the frail elderly, all in an award-winning care setting. In addition to day care services, St. Ann Center provides a plethora of additional services to help those in need and their caregiving family members. According to Grzybowski, services include “overnight respite care, physical and occupational therapy, dental care for people whose disabilities make treatment in a standard dental clinic impossible, specialized dementia care, massage therapy, hair and nail care, music therapy, art, caregiver support groups, community medical clinics, whirlpool bathtubs that are wheelchair accessible…even warm-water, wheel-chairaccessible swimming pools for therapy.” St. Ann Center strives to provide services to all who need them, even if those individuals are not enrolled in the day services program. Though there is some fluctuation in daily attendance, St. Ann Center currently has about 300 adults and 200 children enrolled for day care at its two sites. Grzybowski anticipates that these numbers will rise during the coming year. She noted that individuals from the community are welcome to participate in swimming classes or open swim, water aerobics, or to get a massage. Community members may also sign up to have a “frail relative” stay at the St. Ann Center for overnight respite care. Grzybowski estimates that through this “ripple effect beyond those we serve directly,” the St. Ann Center creates a positive impact on the lives of “well over 1,000 people each year,” including relatives and caregivers of those served, volunteers and staff, and members of the surrounding community. Through a diverse, stimulating and engaging selection of daily activities specially designed by an intergenerational activities director, young and elderly grow, share, and cultivate health together. Activities range from the physically active (interpretive dance and balloon volleyball, for example) to games, cooking activities, art, choir, karaoke, birthday parties and more. St. Ann Center has received international recognition for its pioneering work in intergenerational care. Those served by the St. Ann Center enjoy health benefits that span the E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

physical, mental, emotional and spiritual realms. Children inspire and motivate the elderly to stay active and engaged, while the elderly share wisdom and memories with the children, and help the youth learn to value qualities that unite them while overlooking external differences. “Our kids don’t find a wheelchair or walker intimidating—they look beyond to see their friend who sings songs with them or tells them funny jokes or always gives them a high five,” Grzybowski said. St. Ann Center’s vital role in the community along with the generous support of donors, foundations, grants, and neighborhood partnerships helped fund the creation of St. Ann Center’s Stein Campus in 1999 and the Bucyrus Campus in 2015. Prior to building the Bucyrus Campus, individuals from St. Ann Center got to know the future neighborhood and its community for five years. During this time, they gathered important information while also working to cultivate residents’ participation in the new site’s formation. “…In developing both campuses, our mantra has been ‘build

the community from within.’ That means going directly to the people who live and work in the communities we serve for their input and inspiration,” Grzybowski explained. Working in conjunction with local aldermen, St. Ann Center began a successful business incubator program in the Bucyrus Campus’s neighborhood. “Building the Bucyrus Center made us a major catalyst for economic development in the 53205/53206 neighborhood, the most economically distressed and underserved ZIP code area in the state,” Grzybowski said. Four new businesses are close to opening in the neighborhood, and other entrepreneurs find necessary inspiration and support in First Fridays 4 Business, an entrepreneurs’ networking and resource group that meets monthly at the St. Ann Center’s Bucyrus Campus. The building, creation and operation of the St. Ann Center’s Bucyrus Campus has created jobs as well, and further supports the surrounding community with a medical clinic and health– and wellness–related public events. As a nonprofit organization and a ministry of the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Ann Center

receives essential support from numerous volunteers, foundations, donors and friends. “Partnership and collaboration are some of our bywords in getting things done,” Grzybowski said. Additional working partnerships include those with Cardinal Stritch University, ResCare, the Alzheimer’s Association, Wisconsin Parkinson Association, and TimeSlips, all of which contribute to the array of services offered at St. Ann Center’s campuses. Eighty percent of the adults receiving services and care from the St. Ann Center are unable to afford to pay for these services, so the St. Ann Center must receive help in the form of reimbursements from government programs. “Even so, the level of reimbursement from most sources hasn’t changed for 15 years, though the cost to provide services increases every year,” Grzybowski said. She explained: “Caring for one adult typically costs us from $75 to $100 per day, depending on their level of disability, and the average level of reimbursement is just $52. That leaves a substantial amount we have to acquire through fundraising and the support of our donors and grantors.” Continued on page 28

Find storage plus in the “his and hers” walk-in closets. The master bathroom has the look and feel of a true European spa with rustic tile work, a large Kohler jacuzzi tub and oversized shower. You’ll even find a bonus room with beautiful cherry wood built-in desks and cabinets. A second floor loft, with its balcony, bridges the master bedroom suite to three additional bedrooms complete with en suite bathrooms and custom cabinets. Every resort has an activity center. Entertainment is made easy in the lower level. A wet bar is paneled in exquisite cherry wood. There is a fireplace in the media room, a game room, fitness room, steam room and potential 6th bedroom. And while we are on the subject of entertainment, let’s not forget the magnificent backyard, with its blue stone patio, in-ground pool, hot tub, fire pit and gorgeous back lawn. Where else will you find the elegance and amenities of a five-star resort, blended with the comfort of home? In a fast-paced world, this is a rare opportunity to return everyday to your very own oasis. In fact, you may have to pinch yourself to remember its real. n

THIS CUSTOM-BUILT Executive Home is a gem in the heart of Lake Country, and emulates everything good about the community of Hartland: A quaint culture, relaxed lifestyle, and quality in the things that matter most. Thoughtfully designed and built with distinction, the home’s Earthy colors and natural materials reflect the beauty of surrounding land carved by glaciers thousands of years ago. Natural stone mixes with a gabled roofline for a welcoming, storybook ambiance. Original glass artistry in the front French doors and eye-catching details in the foyer tile are a nod to authenticity and a laid-back luxury you will feel throughout the home. From the home’s entrance you are immediately drawn to the great room. A two story stone fireplace is cradled

between custom milled shelves that run the height of the ceiling and the length of the room. The ceiling is tall, a full 20 feet, and accented by a grid of finely crafted wood beams. Sunlight streams through a wall of windows, and French doors lead out to a stunning backyard, designed and landscaped as a living space unto itself. With a backyard like this, summer nights never felt so good. Grill on the patio directly outside of the kitchen and great room. Sip wine or a tall glass of lemonade while visiting with the chef. When you are ready for a heart-to-heart, settle into a cushy outdoor couch under an oldfashioned wood pergola. A warm glow from the nearby stone fireplace will inspire friendship and add to memories that last. The backdrop for this idyllic outdoor living space is an expansive backyard of velvety

green grass and mature trees. The kitchen is the center of a home’s universe and this kitchen is impressive. Newly renovated, it is high-end and has plenty of room to create, converse and convene. Maple floors provide a light contrast to beautifully crafted cherry wood cabinets. There is more storage in the butler’s pantry. Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances make cooking a great experience. A large island is central to prep work and a separate breakfast bar puts guests or family close to the action. Oversized windows pocket an informal dining space. It’s a bright place to enjoy your morning coffee and large enough to easily fit a table for eight.

STEPS TO PLAN A

REMODEL

n n n

24

REMODELING YOUR HOME can be one of the most exciting projects to undertake. Whether you’re thinking about a bathroom update, kitchen overhaul or a new room addition, planning and setting realistic expectations are critical in ensuring your project goes as smoothly as possible. Consider these steps from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) before you get started: 1. Determine your goals and needs. Understand why you are undertaking the project, whether it’s for resale value or so you can enjoy your home more. If looking to increase resale value, consider the neighborhood and potential upgrades that can have the highest impact when going to market. If remodeling

can make for a more comfortable space, create a list of “must-haves” and “nice-to-haves” then evaluate what’s feasible. Being realistic about needs and wants can help you create a budget. 2. Get inspired. Whether watching home improvement shows or browsing the internet, finding photos of styles and looks you admire can be beneficial when sharing your vision with a remodeling contractor. 3. Understand your budget. Setting a budget and staying within it is critical to the project’s success. Be sure to build in a contingency fund for unforeseen expenses. Project expenses should factor in the cost of products, labor and project management. There are also possible additional costs such as long-term maintenance,

repairs, energy use and a dining out budget if undergoing a full kitchen remodel or hotel costs sometimes necessary with large-scale projects. To avoid any unpleasant surprises, be sure to get a written estimate and scope of work once you’ve selected a contractor. 4. Determine timing. If there is a specific event driving your remodel, work backward through the various project stages to determine a realistic timeline. Build in additional time as a buffer for unexpected delays and recognize remodeling contractors typically have long lead times and may require flexibility to deliver optimal results.

A trade association like NARI can help with its online “Find a Remodeler” tool. Make sure any contractor you’re considering has several years of relevant experience, as well as liability insurance. 5. Find a contractor you trust. Home remodeling can be stressful no matter how well you plan, but a dependable partner can make the process go smoother. While some of the best references may come from neighbors, friends or family members, a trade association like NARI can help with its online “Find a Remodeler” tool. Make sure any contractor you’re considering has several years of relevant experience, as well as liability insurance. 6. Check references. When it comes to remodeling your home, you can never be too careful when choosing who to work with. Be sure to follow up on references, read reviews online and even check out the work of any remodelers you’re considering hiring, if possible. 7. Prepare for the process. Regardless of the size of the project, there will almost surely be inconvenience, noise, dust and potential delays. Your daily routine will most likely be disrupted. Because it can be especially stressful when redoing the kitchen or an essential bathroom, you’ll probably need to consider a backup plan or other arrangements throughout the duration of the project. Remember to also declutter the work area and protect or pack away any belongings that might be in the way during the renovation. PREP YOUR HOME FOR

Summer Gatherings _ n n n

J U LY 2 0 1 9

WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE, it’s time for sun dresses, cranking up the grill and entertaining. Spending time with your loved ones during the warm months can make for some of the best memories of the season, which is why it’s important to take simple steps to de-stress, declutter and refresh your home before your guests arrive. Refresh Your Home Our homes are reflections of who we are, and Renuzit Snuggle helps create a welcoming environment for friends and family. With Renuzit Snuggle, you can welcome guests into your home all summer long with fresh scents like Linen Escape, Relaxing Lavender or Enchanting Tropical. It’s crucial to have an air freshener that is long lasting and easy to use, so you never have to worry about lighting candles just before your guests arrive. Welcome them in with the inviting scent of snuggly freshness, available in Plug-In Scented Oils, Gel Cone Air Fresheners and Fabric Refresher Sprays. Stock Up on Summer Supplies One of the main causes of stress when prepping for friends and family to arrive is ensuring you have everything on-hand to make your gathering a success. Consider buying summer hosting essentials like paper plates, cups and utensils in bulk to help save time and ensure you’re fully stocked for guests all summer long. Having extra snacks and supplies ready to go can also provide peace of mind when it’s time for any last-minute party-prep. Spruce Up Accessories and Decor Update your home’s look by switching out accent pillows, throws or rugs for

colorful or patterned options that can excite you and your guests. Buying all new items each season can get expensive, so consider reusing your current pillow inserts and picking out some new covers in bright summer colors to revamp your home’s look. Bring the Outdoors In Plants can add color and life into your spaces and create a warm and

welcoming environment for your summer gatherings. Bring the outdoors in by adding a few succulents or an herb garden to your kitchen then consider a large, leafy houseplant for your living room. For added pops of color and detail, plant your flowers in fun, decorative pots. For more information on scents to refresh your home, visit renuzit.com. n

Continued from page 12 On Friday August 16, 2019, the St. Ann Center will host its 15th Annual Dream Together Gala at Discovery World Museum. The event features cocktails and a silent auction at 5:30 P.M. in Discovery World’s Pilot House, with views overlooking the downtown area and a sparkling Lake Michigan. Entertainment will be provided by jazz singer Adekola Adedapo & Friends and The Mixx Vocal Band. Guests will then enjoy dinner catered by Bartolotta restaurants and a live auction, both held in Discovery World’s new event venue, the Pavilion. The event promises to be a delightful way to support the St. Ann Center, which hopes to raise $250,000, its highest goal ever. Funds raised at the upcoming Dream Together Gala would benefit St. Ann Center in multiple ways. Grzybowski explained: “We want to help fund our unique dental clinic, the only facility in Wisconsin that exclusively cares for people with severe cognitive or physical disabilities; support our brand-new dementia and memory care unit; and purchase a wheelchair-accessible bus to let more adult clients enjoy field trips.” She added, “We could use increased funds to start up recently completed areas at the Bucyrus Campus: our state-of-the-art Dementia Care Wing, Overnight Respite Center, Indoor Aquatic Center and Indaba Band Shell. And it would let us expand our intergenerational activities—providing art supplies, books, musical instruments, games and a budget for all-ages outings and entertainment.” -St. Ann Center has contributed a vibrant model of the many benefits of intergenerational care, helping to bring people together throughout the lifespan and in the process, enriching the lives of those served and those in the surrounding communities. Grzybowski noted that the age segregation commonly seen in our society over the past 100 years or so has “contributed to generational conflict, where kids and seniors have become pitted against one another for scarce public resources, while making both of them feel less valuable to society.” The vision of Sister Edna Lonergan, OSF, and the St. Ann Center has helped to begin to reverse this trend, while serving as an inspiration and model for other organizations. Grzybowski concluded, “We think an intergenerational and inclusive viewpoint is crucial to creating a culture and a world in which we all want to live. We’re happy to be a part of that for so many families and individuals.” n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

HAVE YOU EVER tried smiling your worries away? Smiles and worries may not go hand in hand, but the truth is that one smile has a tremendous amount of power. It has far more power than reason or analysis. It certainly has more power than gloom and despair. One smile can do more to putting you in touch with God, good, than anything else I can think of. The minute you smile, you lessen the tension that is tightening up your thinking process. When the tension lessens, you are in a position to think about something besides the worry that has you in its grasp. As you let go of the worry, it is forced to let go of you. Suddenly you find yourself not only smiling but loving—loving the perennial flowers that are courageous enough to push up through the earth each year after a cold winter. Loving the summer sunset as you see it from your kitchen window, or a neighbor’s child as he toddles down the street, or the red-breasted robin as he wanders inquisitively about your yard. Then, believe it or not, you have progressed from smiling to loving to rejoicing—and at that moment the battle is won. No worry can possibly stand up against rejoicing that comes from within— from a clear and positive sense that all is well, all is good, all is God.

Turn it around if you want to tell yourself that God is all—all harmony, all understanding—all happiness, all good. As you let the significance of such simple affirmations become equally simple truths to you, you will find yourself manifesting harmony, understanding and happiness to everyone you meet. You will find good and God so easily synonymous in your thinking that you will be expressing good and God with no effort whatsoever. To be conscious of the presence of God is to rejoice wholly, entirely, with your complete being. To rejoice without limitations of any kind! How could one possibly limit the allness of God, or the allness of good? One of the reasons for loving the Psalms is that we who read are constantly being urged to rejoice, to sing, to be glad—nothing of worry or fear can stand up against rejoicing, singing, being glad. It is really an utter impossibility to worry and at the same time to rejoice. No one is capable of such a contradictory state of mind. Let us rejoice then and be glad. Let us rejoice in the certainty that where there is God, there is only good, and since God is everywhere we can honestly and consistently rule out anything that is less than good. n
