SUMMER IS TRADITIONALLY a season marked by celebrations, warm days, and plenty of time for relaxing outdoors. While this summer’s beach visits and celebrations may look different from those of years past, there are still abundant reasons to treat yourself, family and friends to enjoyment during this season of bounty and warmth. Delicious dining experiences are a reason to smile throughout the year. After a long and cool spring, summer feels exceptionally welcome this year, with opportunities to enjoy appetizers, a picnic, or even a meal outside. With favorite restaurants reopening or offering modified options for continuing to indulge in choice culinary treats, there continue to be chances to explore new foods or to return to those dishes that never fail to please and inspire. Dining indoors and on outdoor patios makes summer feel complete, and favorite restaurants are determined to continue to bring safe, quality culinary experiences to returning and new diners. These restaurants are working hard to ensure that guests can continue to enjoy sought-after cuisine and classy evenings out on the town, or to make their food available for carry-out to be enjoyed at home. Some dining venues have already reopened their dine-in facilities, offering welcome moments to enjoy specialty cuisines outside of home. Mo’s Steakhouse, located in downtown Milwaukee at 720 North Plankinton Avenue, reopened its dining room on June 9 and accepts reservations by phone or through Open Table. Plan a visit and expect to savor the ambience of city sophistication while enjoying top-notch seafood, steaks, and wine. Mo’s Steakhouse received the distinction of being named one of the “Best 100 Romantic Restaurants in America for 2019,” making it a fine choice for special occasions in the company of a loved one. For a unique dining experience defined by culinary creativity and many locally sourced ingredients, venture to Fiddlesticks Bistro. Bistro began as Fiddlesticks Café in 2006. After being sold to the Mellor family in February 2017, the name was changed to Fiddlesticks Bistro. Stop in for breakfast or lunch, many of which feature southern or country influences, or explore the influences of a more worldwide context on the dinner fare. If you decide to roam in the lovely Kettle Moraine area, make sure to plan a meal at Johnny Manhattan’s in Hubertus. Located at 3718 Hubertus Road, Johnny Manhattan’s offers a classy supper club atmosphere, perfect for a variety of special occasions. It’s also an ideal spot to stop after a casual outing at a nearby attraction. Plan to visit Johnny Manhattan’s after visiting the local Kettle Hills Golf Course or following time spent exploring one of the three nearby lakes or the Loew Lake Unit, located along part of the Ice Age Scenic Trail in the Kettle Moraine State Forest. Johnny Manhattan’s is also close to Holy Hill National Shrine of Mary, a beautiful spot for contemplation throughout the seasons. Enjoy a variety of mouthwatering foods on your visit, from delicious Italian selections and specialty entrees to seafood, pizza and steak. Or stop

by their bar to refresh and unwind with a glass of wine, a beer, or a modern or classic cocktail. Debra Brock, General Manager/Private Dining Sales at Johnny Manhattan’s, noted that the restaurant’s menu includes the option to order food for carry out. “We have nightly features which include appetizers, entrees and desserts,” Brock explained. Diners at Johnny Manhattan’s may wish to try one of the restaurant’s bestselling dishes, such as lasagna, steak, pasta, or the “award winning pizza.” Brock said that this season, one top seller has been fried deviled eggs and stuffed avocado. She indicated that visitors may wish to enjoy the “lovely covered and heated patio” at Johnny Manhattan’s, a great choice for summer dining. Johnny Manhattan’s also can accommodate special festivities. Brock explained: “We have three private rooms which make a perfect venue for birthday and anniversary celebrations as well as business meetings.” Restaurants want to ensure the health and wellbeing of their employees and guests. ART n n n
TODAY MORE THAN EVER, we need beauty in our lives. Original art is one of those wonderful ways to put your creative stamp on your home. People notice when they see one of a kind art. Whether it is an original oil painting, creatively blown art glass, uniquely designed ceramic or a special piece of jewelry, your visitors recognize it for what it is–a treasure. Art tastes have changed over the years. And, art consumers have changed, too. Wealthy consumers used to purchase the finest art pieces by the top artists in art galleries in big cities. The pieces were of the quality that museums displayed. The art could have been abstract or realism. As a rest of the general population was left to purchase lower priced signed prints. However, now more than ever, art lovers with all levels purchasing power, look to small local galleries and art fairs to find that special piece. Unfortunately, today, art fairs are no longer an option for artists due to the shutdowns. Local art galleries are the best option for someone who wants to be introduced to many art options and price ranges. Art consumers of today prefer very loose realism, impressionism or abstracts. And, subjects such as nature, pollination, farms, rivers and lakes take center stage. Some clients are very interested in the story a piece of art tells. And, many others just fall in love with the piece.

Often the color of an art piece is most important to the art buyer. The staff at the River’s End Gallery often hear, “will this work in my room?” Therefore, the gallery has instituted a “try it at home” program. You borrow it, see if it works, and if not bring it back. Whether the artist is an emerging talent or already established, art galleries recognize an artists’ talent and promote this talent to the public at large. At the River’s End Gallery, you are introduced to different perspectives and ways of thinking through the viewing of artwork. In addition, you may be inspired to change the way you think about a subject, get ideas to enhance your home, or stimulate you to create your own works of art. You learn about the artist and how things are made, and the owner has given talks to school groups and art clubs. When Wisconsin opened up again, so did the River’s End Gallery in Waukesha. Following all the CDC guidelines, the gallery showcases art of multiple local and regional artists. The River’s End Gallery opened in the summer of 2006. It fast became a cultural go-to place within Waukesha and in turn,
attracted art lovers and tourists to the city as a tourist destination. Attracting tourists to this art gallery and other galleries in the city caused boost to the local economy. Waukesha began to see more and diverse investment in the downtown. Restaurants and bars, specialty
shops, live performances, and businesses began to open. The art lovers eat at local restaurants, attend live shows, stay at hotels, frequent hair salons and shop at stores of all kinds. As a direct result, this behavior boosts the local economy and in turn, created more local jobs. Overall, art galleries contribute immensely to society–whether it is economically–or through art appreciation, education, and inspiring others, explained the owner, Joan Skimmons. The River’s End Gallery is a 1,700-sq.-ft. gallery representing about 150 artists over the course of a year. In addition to paintings, the gallery has a heavy emphasis on sterling silver jewelry and semi-precious stones. Our gallery carries amazing art glass pieces, original paintings of all types and sizes, and focus on unusual pottery. You can find a small gift for a gift exchange or a large painting for a focal point in your home. The art changes all the time and of course the gallery’s “take it home and try it” policy is unique. “The River’s End Gallery is a wonderful place to spend some time, and we love the people who come in and just look around”, said Skimmons. River’s End Gallery is located at 380 W. Main St., Waukesha, www.RiversEndGallery.com. n

THIS MODERN FARMHOUSE is an extraordinary find on Pewaukee Lake, seamlessly blending modern amenities with important history, paying homage to why people have been drawn to Lake Country for more than a century. If you had to describe the residence, here is what comes to mind: Luxurious yet comfortable, with a strong dose of “WOW” mixed in. Best yet, there is an interesting story around every corner. For instance, this was one of the first properties ever developed on Pewaukee Lake. When new owners decided to rebuild, a few years ago, they went to great lengths to reclaim reminders from the original cottage that stood on the property for more than 100 years. Fantastic doors and pine and cedar
wood accents are found throughout the new residence. In addition, the owners searched high and low to find just the right antique dressers to be refurbished and repurposed as bathroom vanities. The results are fantastic! But, let’s go back to the front door, and take a tour. When you enter the foyer, you are met with an expansive space, soaring ceiling, wall of windows, and priceless views of Pewaukee Lake. A formal dining area is central to the open concept, with floor to ceiling windows and three incredible chandeliers hanging from a two-story ceiling. Patio doors lead to an elevated deck that runs the length of the home with expandable, twelve-foot awnings that can be drawn out for shade.

Honoring The Past
n n n
The incredible lake view includes downtown Pewaukee to the east, and quiet lake space to the west. The formal dining area is flanked by a chef’s kitchen and a family room, both great places to entertain. Guests can hang out at a huge marble breakfast bar (seating for 8), while the host enjoys cooking on a Viking stovetop or prepping food on a glorious island, fashioned from support beams from the original cottage. Not a beat is missed in this kitchen. There is an extra-large refrigerator, coffee station and butler’s pantry. Traditional globe pendants and a reclaimed pine and cedar accent panel, harken to days gone by on Pewaukee Lake. Adjacent to the kitchen, relax in a delightful sunroom with a cup of tea, and enjoy the bright lake vista. You’ll find a cozy family room on the opposite side of the main floor, with a gas fireplace, handcrafted, built-in cabinets and more fabulous lake views. Off of the family room, garage doors original to the former cottage lead to a room that is perfect for an office, study or music room. Even the mud room and laundry room are
thoughtfully designed. When you enter from the garage, extra cabinet and “cubby” space will help keep your family’s outer-wear organized. Refinished support beams original to the first cottage are put to use as laundry room counter tops, which match the kitchen island. One of the most impressive uses of reclaimed cottage wood is experienced just off of the entryway. Walls of the front stairway are wrapped in pine, bringing depth and warmth to the foyer’s focal point. Upstairs, a walkway bridges the second floor offering cohesion, connection and privacy. One side of the bridge provides a bird’s eye view of the home’s entrance. The other side overlooks the main floor’s open living space. Four bedrooms and two full baths on one end of the bridge provide plenty of room for children and guests to sleep. The master bedroom suite, on the other side of the bridge, is a private oasis. Wake up to restful lake views in the master bedroom and find respite in the master spa bath with its oversized marble shower. The finished lower level is quaint and charming, with a true modern farmhouse feel. Plumbing is in place for a kitchen and bar.
Have a snack in the dining area, watch a movie in the media center or workout in the gym. A sixth bedroom with an en suite bathroom completes the exposed lower level. Doors original to the old cottage provide beautiful accents throughout the exposed lower level. Finally, and perhaps most important, enjoy the lifestyle while making family memories on Pewaukee Lake. Lower level patio doors lead to a bucolic backyard and more than 100 feet of private lake frontage. The property comes with two piers, both for docking, and one with a sundeck and swimming post. Watch action on the water from a firepit on land or a lounging platform already permitted for building a boathouse. And while we are on the subject of boats, take a quick boat ride to downtown Pewaukee for the public beach, great dining, and boutiques. This is a great opportunity to live in relaxed luxury on Pewaukee Lake with purpose, meaning and joy. You’ll find the best of today’s modern amenities in this remarkable home. At the same time historical accents are authentic reminders of Lake Country’s “Glory Days”. It is a perfect combination and solid foundation for building your own family’s Lake Country dreams. n

PAUSING TO TAKE a break from everyday routines can nourish the body, mind and spirit. Thoughts expand as new vistas are explored; the mind opens to possibilities, and personal goals and dreams are revisited anew. Upon returning from time spent away from home, the lingering positive energy from a much-anticipated vacation can fuel new projects and invigorate an individual’s resolve within the context of the patterns of daily life. This year, vacationing may take on a different nuance. For those able to take time away, some longer travels have been postponed in favor of shorter, local excursions. Whether Wisconsinites choose to venture further afield or capture the essence of relaxation close to home, our state has numerous destinations to appeal to individuals, couples, and families. In the hot and humid summer months, a vacation to Wisconsin’s peaceful northern region of plentiful lakes and comfortably cool forests is often perfectly appealing. Minocqua and the surrounding vicinity offer a beautiful and popular vacation destination for those seeking tranquility and recreation. Consider venturing north for your next getaway, either this season, or in a future adventure. Located in the north central region of Wisconsin, Minocqua, “The Island City,” is distinguished by its plenitude of picturesque lakes, streams and rivers. The Minocqua area includes forty-five lakes,
by An n e Kaiser
while there are over 2,300 water bodies in the surrounding area, distinguishing the region as being one of the highest concentrations of fresh water in the world. The area’s water and surrounding forests are enjoyed for their beauty as well as for the numerous opportunities they provide for spending active time outside. According to Kailey Barutha, Content Manager for Let’s Minocqua Visitors Bureau and Chamber of Commerce, “The highlight of our area is all of the outdoor recreation.” During warm months, visitors enjoy the area’s bountiful water through a variety of recreational activities such as boating, fishing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking and water-skiing. Wintertime brings ice fishing on frozen waters, and snowmobiling, sledding, and crosscountry skiing on the adjacent land. Local lakes are also delightful spots to enjoy from the shore, for relaxing evenings watching water birds or gazing at constellations in a star-dappled sky. First inhabited by native peoples such as the Ojibwe, the Minocqua area eventually drew European settlers in part for its wealth of mature forests, sought after by early loggers. As time passed, the area grew in its popularity as a vacation site. While the population of year-round residents is slightly shy of 5,000 people, the influx of vacationers each summer swells that number to sometimes four times as many.

With upwards of 600 miles of hiking trails, fans of on-foot sightseeing and nature exploration will find a path to suit every mood and fitness level. Visitors to Minocqua and the surrounding area will enjoy selecting accommodations that similarly fit each individual’s, couple’s, or family’s lodging preferences. Campgrounds allow for a wilderness experience, while bed and breakfasts, cabins and cottages, hotels and motels, and even vacation homes allow for luxurious experiences of Wisconsin’s northern lakes and forests.

Located at 10094 State Hwy 70 West in Minocqua, it is the second largest zoo in the state and, in her words, “a very cool zoo for families.” She noted that the zoo is unique because of its interactive nature; among its offerings, visitors can help to feed a bear or pet some deer. When visitors to Minocqua want to sit back and relax at the end of a day of outdoor enjoyment or visits to restaurants and shops in town, a show performed by the Min-Aqua Bats Water Ski Club might inspire and delight. Minocqua is home to the club, first formed in 1950, now the oldest amateur water ski show in the United States to have been continuously running. Their free shows may be enjoyed on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 7:00 pm between mid-June and the Friday before Labor Day at 422 W. Park Avenue in Minocqua. Performers in the Min-Aqua Bats Water Ski Club enjoy the honor of having competed in a variety of tournaments; they also have the distinction of winning medals and trophies in varied events at regional, state, and national levels of competition. Late-summer visitors to Minocqua may want to venture onto the downtown portion of this island city to sample the offerings of the annual Beef-A-Rama™. According to Barutha, during this “very big” beef-themed event, generally held annually on the last Saturday in September, about 12,000 people flock to the downtown area. There, they can enjoy live music performances, beef roasts, a craft show with over 70 vendors, and a 10K and 5K run and walk along the shore of Lake Minocqua. The event has run for over 50 years, and, as described by Barutha, is “our big, end-ofsummer bash.” For those seeking a memorable cultural experience, a visit to the Campanile Center for the Arts for a special performance might be suitable. Located at 131 Milwaukee Street in Minocqua, this regional nonprofit center is dedicated to using performances, education, and exhibits to “develop, promote and support the arts” in the area communities, according to their mission statement. The Campanile Center for the Arts strives to make the arts accessible to all, and offers a wide array of opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy and appreciate the arts. River’s End Gallery Judy Munro’s paintings are a combination of observation, imagination and bits and pieces of sights, sounds, smells and feelings experienced and remembered, a myriad of lasting impressions now translated, alla prima, into paint on a surface. She is drawn to the way realism and abstraction merge in the landscape. Lines and edges are lost and found, horizontal and vertical grids dissolve into flowing color and then restructure, foreground and background shift and deep space becomes flat plane. There are 14 of Judy’s paintings at the River’s End Gallery, 380 W. Main St., Waukesha, www.RiversEndGallery.com, 262-780-1191. The painting displayed “Woods” 40"W x 30"H.

FUNCTION AMBIANCE Practical Tips to Improve your Home’s Interior n n n
22
HOMEOWNERS TACKLING INTERIOR upgrades often focus their attention on two of the mostused rooms the in the house: the kitchen and bathroom. Tailoring these rooms to your personal preferences may enhance your enjoyment of the space, but most experts recommend thinking long term for the biggest return on your investment. If a kitchen or bathroom renovation is in your future, take a holistic approach that considers how the space will be used now and in the future. Kitchen Considerations As the hub of activity for many households, the kitchen is a space that commands efficient, functional design. Aside from the practical issue of losing access to the space while it’s under construction, there’s another important challenge for homeowners to consider when tackling a kitchen remodel: for maximum return on your investment, avoid making choices that are too trendy or personal. Design trends come and go, so while a contemporary update is almost always a good idea, many design experts recommend sticking with classic looks and styles that have broad appeal, especially for big ticket (and big price tag) elements like cabinetry. Save your flair for aspects like the backsplash tile or wall color, which can be relatively easily changed by a new owner or even yourself when you want a refresh down the road. Another area to give special attention is the overall ambiance of the room, which is largely

influenced by the light from natural and electric sources. For a room that needs brightening, skylights are a smart option because they free up wall space for more storage and cabinets while adding abundant natural light. However, natural light from above isn’t the only advantage of adding skylights. Some models, such as a Velux solar-powered, fresh-air skylight, can be opened with a remote control to bring fresh air inside, which helps keep the kitchen fresh and rids indoor air of pollutants from daily activities like cooking and cleaning. Skylights can be ordered with lightfiltering or room-darkening blinds, which give homeowners maximum control over the exact amount of light they want. Plus, solar-powered blinds come in over 75 colors and patterns for customizable design options that allow you to truly make the space your own. Be sure to ask whether the line you’re considering qualifies for a federal tax credit. Solar-powered skylights and blinds are eligible for a 26% federal tax credit on product and installation if purchased and installed by the end of 2020. The credit decreases to 22% in 2021.
A Better Bathroom In the bathroom, modern upgrades are also a smart investment. However, many experts actually recommend thinking not just about what’s in vogue right now but considering needs far into the future. Universal design is especially relevant in the bathroom, where simple adjustments can provide added accessibility as you age, and these updates can flow seamlessly into the design. This means considering a vanity with a raised counter height and a taller toilet base, which can add stylish enjoyment no matter your age. Other features like a zero-entry shower deliver high-demand design and safety simultaneously. Outside of accessibility-oriented updates, upgrading your fixtures, fresh paint and contemporary tile can go a long way toward transforming a bathroom. If you find your space is still in need of a boost, a skylight may be the answer. Natural light can be that last touch to bring your space from just OK to perfect, and skylights in the bathroom allow homeowners to maximize their natural light without losing any privacy. In a space like the bathroom, where ventilation is a top concern, a choice like Velux
No Leak Solar-Powered “Fresh Air” Skylights provide natural light as well as fresh air ventilation to make the environment healthier. They help rid indoor air of bacteria, volatile organic compounds and carbon dioxide. Explore more design ideas to enhance your kitchen and bathroom spaces at www.whyskylights.com. Smart Climate Control Fresh air ventilation is one way homeowners can promote better indoor air quality, especially in rooms like kitchens and bathrooms which are especially vulnerable to poor air circulation. A smartphone-controlled skylight automation system such as Velux Active with Netatmo can help improve indoor climate from the convenience of your mobile device. It allows homeowners to automate when they open and close their skylights and blinds. The system monitors an online weather station and uses indoor sensors to measure temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide levels in the home. Based on a homeowner’s settings, the system will automatically open the skylights or extend the blinds as needed to improve air quality and temperature inside the home. n

According to Barutha, many of the area’s return visitors have a long history of vacationing in the area. She mentioned that she frequently hears from visitors that they originally came to Minocqua as children for camp experiences, then returned with their own children years later, and now are returning with the families of their grown children. “It’s kind of another home to them,” she explained. “It kind of becomes their place.” n J U LY/AU G U S T 2020

COMMUNITIES
TOGETHER n n n

IT’S IMPORTANT TODAY to find ways to connect with others to help deepen your understanding of those around you. In a time when differences seem to dominate today’s culture, it can help to find similarities, draw connections and bridge worlds. From community leaders and organizations to embassies and consulates, cultural events and programs are popping up in communities across the country in unexpected ways. For example, Germany is wrapping up a year-long campaign called Wunderbar Together, a Year of GermanAmerican Friendship that was designed to bring diplomacy from Washington’s K street to America’s main streets. This effort, funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, implemented by the Goethe-Institut and supported by the Federation of German Industries (BDI), brought together more than 400 partners in an effort to strengthen existing networks while also bringing more Americans into the dialogue about the GermanAmerican relationship. “The German-American friendship is built on myriad personal connections that span the Atlantic - centuries-old family ties and new friendships, twin towns and sister cities and friendships between schools and universities,” said German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. “Recently, thanks to Wunderbar Together, many people in the two countries have added thousands of new snapshots depicting this friendship - pictures that were taken pretty much every second at more than 2,000 events in all 50 states.” The campaign reached 560 communities. On top of the more than 1 million attendees reached in-person, Wunderbar Together also builta multifaceted, strong digital presence that engaged 10.1 million users online and secured approximately

235 million impressions across traditional media and owned social media channels. Events and opportunities that bring together communities and cultures is not unique to this campaign. For example, people in communities across the country experience other cultures through initiatives like sister city programs, cultural moments like Chinese New Year and food festivals in cities like Chicago exploring everything from Polish to Puerto Rican delicacies. If you’re looking for ideas to introduce your family to other cultures, keep an eye out for opportunities like these in your own community: Cultural festivals and traveling exhibits Events that celebrate the traditions of a particular group, country or region take place all over the country. Cultural festivals and traveling exhibits can provide a unique perspective on a specific subject and offer the opportunity to sample traditional foods, hear unfamiliar languages and observe games or demonstrations for various crafts and skills. For example, the Wunderbar Together PopUp Tour combined a culture tent with mobile presentation modules and various flexible pop-up edutainment elements. Programs ranged from business conferences, science slams, art exhibits and concerts to interactive, student-focused events. Guests got to taste authentic German food, watch live streams of Germany’s premier professional soccer league, learn from a decked-out WanderbUS equipped with German language activities and get immersed in the arts and sciences through events like “Science is Fun” and Circus Mojo workshops. You can expect to learn a great deal about a culture while you see and experience it first-hand. Museums A more formal setting like a museum offers a wealth of information with displays, artifacts and often a deep look at the history of a subject, such as a historical event, location or population. Museums continually update their collections, and new programs and lectures can help give you insight into new artists, cultures and traditions. For example, a recent exhibition at the New Museum in New York City, “Hans Haacke: All Connected,” is one way to experience the work of a German artist in the United States. In addition to identifying museums that pique your interest in your own community, be sure to look into museums you might be able to visit when you’re traveling for business or pleasure, as well as rotating
installations through museums’ temporary exhibit spaces. Historical landmarks All over the world, there are landmarks dedicated to explaining pivotal moments in history and the ways these events affected the people and communities nearby. Some landmarks are as basic as a monument on the side of a highway while others are entire buildings dedicated to explaining the impact of a single event or series of events. Monuments and historical landmarks can also serve as public convening areas and place for events. For example, to kick off the Year of GermanAmerican Friendship, four-time break-dance world champions from Berlin, The Flying Steps, held a special performance at one of the nation’s most iconic landmarks: the Lincoln Memorial. The “b-boy” crew combined breakdancing with the music of Johann Sebastian Bach for a one-of-a-kind performance in the nation’s capital. Restaurants and food trucks Food may be the way to win over someone’s heart, but it’s also a way to understand another culture. Learning about traditional dishes and customs surrounding such an essential aspect of daily life can give you a strong sense of the values and a literal flavor for an unfamiliar lifestyle. The explosion of food trucks, many of which offer traditional foods from countries around the world, provide opportunities to sample food you may never have had access to before. Some food trucks are even designed to do just that - such as the Wiesn in a Box truck that is part of the Wunderbar Together campaign, which is a Bauhaus-themed pretzel and Hofbräu beer cart that sets up a mobile Oktoberfest-inspired beer garden in cities across the country. Performance arts and film Artistic expression can be found among virtually every community. From theater and dance to art gallery shows and musical concerts, there’s essentially no shortage of ways to connect communities through the arts. Attending shows or watching films that emphasize cultural education and celebrate diverse perspectives can help open your mind and teach you about new subjects or cultures. Film festivals are a way to experience new types of movies and directors, such as the annual German Currents Film Festival that has become a fixture on the cultural calendar in Los Angeles and is known for screening films from Germany, ranging from art-house films to blockbusters and children’s matinees to late-night movies. n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

A MIRACLE need not necessarily involve a supernatural act. According to the American College Dictionary it may be a wonder or a marvel. Walt Whitman, nineteenth century poet who glorified the common place, believed that “every hour of the light and dark is a miracle, every cubic inch of space is a miracle.” Perhaps you and I should lay aside the concerns of today’s world and acknowledge that we, too, are surrounded by miracles that could lift our spirits from the mundane to the wonders and marvels that surround us. We need but seek them. I watched a very little girl, kneeling close to a bed of African daisies, as she stared in excited wonder at a monarch butterfly that had flown directly to her and then, wings fluttering, attached itself to her skirt. “Oh,” she whispered, “look, look quick. It wants to play with me.” What a miracle of childish innocence and delight! A crash of thunder, a startlingly broad band of lightning, a deluge of rain, and in less than five minutes a rainbow highlighted by a rose colored sunset, breathtakingly beautiful. Only in the mountainous Southwest does one experience such a miracle of dramatic beauty as the aftermath of a sudden storm. A huge silver bird winging its way back to its air base across soft clouds powderpuffing the blue canopy high above me.
What else but a miracle of man’s ingenuity, guided by Divine Wisdom! A mammoth coliseum overflowing with boisterous thousands intent on the professional contest being ballyhooed noisily by equally professional broadcasters. Scantily attired cheerleaders cavorting jauntily for the benefit of television cameras. Security police on the alert. A band director raises his baton; a faceless voice solemnly intones, “Our national anthem.” The thousands rise, and for a brief second a hush falls over the coliseum as our flag slowly reaches the tip of the flagpole and unfurls in all its beauty. A roar goes up from the crowd, and the spell is broken. What a miracle of mingled emotions! How Whitman would have savored it! Do you know what is the greatest miracle of all? Don’t be surprised when I tell you that you are. You and all the “yous” who comprise our universe are the greatest miracle ever created. Why? Because you aren’t merely flesh and blood and bones and organs. You are in touch with the Divine. You have a Soul, your credit card to Infinity. When you are bogged down with the limiting fears of humanhood, look around quickly for a miracle. It is waiting to be recognized. A miracle is really God in action. n
