AS WISCONSIN WELCOMES the warm days of summer, homeowners celebrate the arrival of the season with special decorating touches. Family and guests once again sit and dine or relax on screen porches and outdoor decks or patios; indoor spaces seem to merge seamlessly with outdoor ones. Longer hours of daylight and sultry breezes invite homeowners to raise shades and open blinds and windows, letting the sunlight and fresh outdoor air in. Winter’s fabrics and color palette can be traded for the durable, beach-reminiscent fabrics and colors of summer’s easy living. Here in Wisconsin, the four seasons are marked by distinctive shifts in garden foliage, temperature, and hours of daylight. Homeowners adapt to and embrace these shifts through seasonal changes in décor as well as use of seasonal outdoor or indoor/outdoor living spaces, such as three-season sunrooms, screened porches, outdoor decks and patios. Entertaining and family activities ebb and flow through these interior and exterior spaces as weather permits, with summertime bringing much-awaited longer, warmer days. As these days arrive with greater certainty, spring cleaning makes way for summer furnishings. Three local designers share some of their favorite summer living and decorating suggestions here. Welcoming summer can be as simple as cleaning and opening windows. According to Pam Stasney, Assistant Designer at Haven Interiors, Ltd., located at 1457 N. Farwell Avenue, “When it comes to

E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

Warren Barnett Interiors summertime, it’s all about light. Open up shutters and let the sunshine in…Letting in a little extra sunlight will instantly brighten any room.” The fabrics used for window treatments can be shifted as well, with winter’s heavier, heat-preserving choices packed away to make way for summery fabrics and colors. “Switch out heavytextured window treatments with airy woven woods and flowing linens to bring the outside in,” Stasney said. Ayanna Govan, Designer at Ken Michaels Furniture at 4140 South 108th Street in Greenfield, similarly advised “swapping…thick, heavyweight curtains and bedding for lightweight and breathable materials such as linen and cotton.” Emily Ebben, Director of Design at Warren Barnett Interiors at 14755 West Capitol Drive in Brookfield, agreed that linens, cottons and “inside/out” fabrics all work well “to achieve a ‘summery vibe.’”

Lake-home owners needn’t lose their lake views or sacrifice privacy as they prepare to lighten window treatments in preparation for the summer months. Govan recommended the use of “sheer drapery or light-filtering Top Down Bottom Up window shades” as options for window treatments that let light in while maintaining privacy.

The best way to decorate your outdoor spaces are to think of (them) as an extension of your home, If you have a color scheme or decorating style throughout your interior spaces, you should carry that in your outdoor spaces as well,” Lake homes enjoy added proximity to sand, pebbles and water, but homeowners needn’t worry—practical summer decorating solutions accommodate these natural elements with seamless ease. According to Stasney, “performance fabrics”—those that are “lightfast, breathable and durable” are now being

mud-absorbing doormats to light runners.” Additionally, any home may enjoy the addition of colorful, practical vinyl rugs. Ken Michaels Furniture offers “thousands of prints and patterns to complement your décor,” Govan said. She further described the benefits of vinyl rugs: “They wipe clean, have a non-slip surface, …lay flat, and have a comfortable feel to the touch.” Or, for a different special touch to home floors, Stasney recommended natural materials: “Sisal and jute rugs underfoot are reminiscent of sand on the seashore.” For many homeowners, summer provides a welcome opportunity to return to outdoor entertaining on porches, decks and patios. These spaces offer welcoming and intimate extensions of the home’s warmth. “The best way to decorate your outdoor spaces are to think of (them) as an extension of your home,” Govan said. “If you have a color scheme or decorating style throughout your interior spaces, you should carry that in your outdoor spaces as well,” Govan continued. She recommended the addition of an outdoor rug and centerpieces on outdoor dining pieces. In addition to these touches, Govan mentioned “adding curtains to…

used indoors with greater frequency than ever in the past. This marks “one of the greatest changes (designers have) seen in the textile industry,” Stasney explained. These fabrics “are low maintenance, easy to clean, pet-friendly and ready for swimsuits—perfect for lake house living,” Stasney said. “When designing a lake home,” Ebben said, “I would consider all spaces and their use…If there is a lower, for instance, that opened up to the outside/lake/pool, etc., I would consider using a luxury vinyl flooring…they really look and feel similar to wood, but will be able to withstand tons of use—water, sand, etc. I would also suggest Sunbrella-like fabrics for any room that will get immense sunlight off of the lake, or perhaps be sat on with wet swim suits.” In addition to facilitating the flow of more sunlight into rooms, summer necessitates welcoming barefoot living, with a greater flow of movement between grassy lawns, lakeside piers, and outdoor decks and patios and the welcoming interior spaces of the homes nearby. “Summer means indoor spaces flow effortlessly into outdoor spaces,” Stasney said. Govan recommended switching “water and

gazebos or pergolas to create privacy and a layer of warmth” to accommodate cooler evening gatherings, as well as adding outdoor lights to brighten evening outdoor events. To best select furniture for outdoor living and entertaining areas, homeowners should be mindful of the durability of outdoor fabrics. Govan recommended the Sunbrella brand as “the best fabric choice for…outdoor furniture or even furniture that gets lots of sun exposure.” According to Govan, Sunbrella fabrics “are moldand mildew-resistant, cleanable with bleach solution, and (are) known for being able to withstand high UV rays” which indicates that the fabrics’ vibrancy will not fade. Govan noted that, as many homeowners leave cushions outdoors even during rain, it is advisable to purchase “vinyl encased foam cushions.” “…Although your fabric is water and mold resistant, it is not water or mold-proof, and neither is your foam,” Govan said. Ken Michaels Furniture offers both Sunbrella fabrics and waterproof cushions for use with outdoor furniture or furniture that will receive extensive sun exposure.

Ebben noted that both furniture and fabrics for outdoor living and entertaining have “come such a long way.” She appreciates the patterns, feel and colors of the new indoor/outdoor fabrics, and mentioned that “the new sectionals, sofas and chairs that can be used to make an outdoor living space feel comfortable and inviting are truly amazing!” Ebben noted that the soft new outdoor furniture can “truly make the exterior (environment) feel like an extension of… interior living spaces.”

summer decorating can unify, lighten and brighten your living space. With festive or restful accent pieces and natural touches, summer decorating captures the essence of the season. Outdoor summer entertaining on decks, patios and porches can feel effortless when friends are invited to share in the festivities. “Keep entertaining light and easy, too! When a friend asks ‘What can I bring?’ let them whip up their specialty or assign something simple to add to your menu,” Stasney said. Some of her favorite decorating tips to create a “magical summer

soirée” include filling “mason jars with miniature twinkle lights” (“It’s as if fireflies lit up the place,” Stasney remarked) and “adorn(ing) tabletops with freshly picked wildflowers or sparkling treasures from time outdoors.” Not all summer entertaining needs to occur outdoors; summer offers plenty of opportunities for indoor relaxation and activity as well. Indoor spaces offer the perfect summer haven for relaxing after a day spent boating or otherwise enjoying the warm, sun-infused outdoors. Preparing a home for summer living and entertaining also allows for indoor fun on cloudy or cooler days. Shifting accent pieces like rugs and pillows and adding special mementos of the season to tabletops and windowsills can help reflect the warmth and magic of the long, warm days of summer. “Lighten up interiors with fresh neutral hues and splashes of vibrant color,” Stasney suggested. Govan agreed: “Although the colors and prints may change from year to year, vibrant colors and bold patterns and prints will always be popular for use in summer décor.” Ebben similarly recommended a “lighter and brighter” approach to summer decorating. Govan noted that simple changes, such as

adding a floral centerpiece to a dining table, showcasing art “pieces that feature greenery,” and “adding pillows on (beds and sofas) that have pops of bright colors” can all help to make a home ready for the summer season of relaxing and entertaining. Ebben agreed: “Changing out pillows or brightening up the artwork in a space is an easy way to transform your room for the upcoming summer season.” For Stasney, summer inspires “beachy styling.” She offered several decorating ideas inspired by ocean living:

Make your backyard dreams

“Sea glass, pale turquoise vases and iridescent seashells illuminate window sills and reflect shimmering light. Beachy grasses and air plants create an atmosphere of lightness. Fresh, fluffy white towels and an oversized, comfy duvet add a feeling of pure luxury.” As summer once again warms the Wisconsin landscape, area designers are busy helping clients prepare their homes for the welcome days ahead. Govan noted that her clients often do more entertaining of guests in summer, often using interior spaces just as much as exterior ones. Clients “are considering extra seating for guests,

She noted that the advent of summer often inspires clients to “update their main living areas,” and that she and the team at Ken Michaels Furniture also help clients “(add) small pieces to increase their storage space around this time of the year.” Local design teams at a variety of locations are eager to help new and established clients with summer decorating and design updates. We strive to achieve a look that suits our clients—their family, their way of living in their home—one that is timeless and season-less.” Whether your summer brings lazy afternoons barefoot on a screen porch, quiet evenings reading indoors, or delightful outdoor parties with friends and family, summer decorating can unify, lighten and brighten your living space. JUDY MUNRO

JUNE 2019

AFTER AN EXTENSIVE career in design and marketing, Munro was drawn to launch her professional fine art career. From early childhood, she was drawn to art and was encouraged by educators to pursue a career in art. Today, Munro’s art is collected nationwide and is prized for the way she conveys the light, color and bold intensity of the landscapes and cityscapes. She paints in a unique loose style, which is perfect to capture light and shadows. Munro’s works are oil paintings on a board and most are considered representational which straddles abstract and impressionism. As Munro explains, “Most of my work is representational. I consider myself simply a contemporary painter without a specific style label.” Munro’s paintings are bold, rich in color, and beautifully textured explorations of the emotive qualities of color and light. She has an astonishingly varied body of work. As Munro said, “My landscapes are a combination of observation, imagination and memory fragments. I take bits and pieces of sights, sounds, smells and feelings experienced and remembered and lasting impressions and put them into the painting. I’m drawn to the way realism and abstraction merge in the landscape. Lines and edges are lost and found, horizontal and vertical grids dissolve into flowing

color and then restructure, and foreground and background shift and deep space becomes flat plane. The paint, its texture, color and form takes on a life of its own and becomes an equal partner in the landscape statement.” As professional artist, Munro, takes pleasure in the active learning and the anticipation of trying out a new process or exploring a new thought in the next painting to come. She is represented by eleven galleries and retail businesses across Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, New Jersey, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Munro said, “I have always dreamt of becoming a professional, self-sustaining artist engaged in the business of selling my art. I love what I do. I can be found, five or six days out of the week, 6 hours a day, in my studio painting.” She is very popular with clients and designers; her paintings find a home quickly. In Southeast Wisconsin, you can fine Munro’s paintings at the River’s End Gallery in Waukesha. Munro finds that inspiration happens while she is painting. Munro explains, “My painting is a spontaneous process. I rarely have a preconceived idea of what I want to do before sitting down to paint. Whatever appeals to me at that moment is the subject for the day. While I’m painting I don’t allow myself to analyze too much, correct or over think any aspect of what I’m doing; it needs to be intuitive. I save the analyzing for after the painting is complete.” Munro continues, “I’ve also come to welcome the things I don’t control when I paint. They create interesting problem solving opportunities and add character to the painting. Sometimes I find an image so visually compelling that I have to paint it multiple times until I get it out of my system. I’ve had images that I’ve painted ten or fifteen times because after each painting I was still not done with it, there was more to be said and to be resolved. I use photos as a starting point reference for most of my work. Then the painting evolves independent of the initial reference, from imagination and the painting process itself. Perspective and light are often added based on my experience and training.” For Munro, landscapes have become a way to just get lost in the process of painting. The texture of the paint, the colors, the brushstrokes and the things that happen as the edge of one brushstroke influences another, along with the structure and patterns of nature, make painting landscapes a fascinating project. “I’m always looking for ways to destroy hard edges and details while making individual elements part of the larger whole. I want the viewer to see a recognizable image from a distance and to see a different painting, something abstract, when close up to the painting.” In addition to landscapes, Munro I loves to paint a city at night, any city. As explained by Munro, “Night is when the jewelry comes out, the lights go on and the city becomes a place of glamorous seduction, excitement, mystery, amusement, entertainment, story-telling and sensory overload–a place to get lost in, to reinvent yourself, to emerge from, renewed and refreshed. My city is never dangerous, or sad, or lonely, it’s always an interesting and exciting place to be.” Her paintings are meant to convey the essence of the city: the lights; the movement; the energy; the structure and are therefore more “generic” than depictions of particular places. Munro has a bachelor of Fine Arts from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan and had a scholarship to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Her design and marketing career included being director of marketing services with Lionel Trains LLC and manager of graphic services for Society of Manufacturing Engineers. She has participated in more than 100 shows and exhibits, her paintings are in many corporate collections and have been featured on television set designs of Chicago Justice, Chicago Fire, Patriot, Sense 8, and Chicago P.D. In addition, Munro has received the following honors and awards: • 2016 2nd Place, Joy And Wonder, Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, • 2016 Best In Show-Portfolio, The River, stillpointartgallery.com,• 2015 3rd Place, City Life, Grosse Pointe, Michigan, • 2014, People’s Choice Award, Art Of Our Women, Port Huron, Michigan, • 2014, 2nd Place, Color, Art, Life and Love, Port Huron, Michigan, • 2012, 3rd Place, 38th Annual Michigan Exhibition, Mount Clemens, Michigan, • 1975, First Place, Michigan Art Festival, Livonia, Michigan, • 1972, Special Award, Michigan Art Festival, Livonia, Michigan, • 1972, Special Award, Michigan Art Festival, Livonia, Michigan and • 1971, 2nd Place, Michigan Art Festival, Livonia, Michigan. Judy Munro’s fine art is sold at the River’s End Gallery, 380 W. Main Street, Waukesha, Wisconsin (www.RiversEndGallery.com, 262-780-1191) since 2006, and other galleries throughout the United States. GOD’S CORNER by Ger trude M. Puelicher n n n

30

IN A WORLD growing seemingly more complicated from one day to the next, should we not as individuals develop so close an affiliation with the greatest motivating force the world will ever know that some of that God-power becomes a practical force in our affairs? If necessary, one can live rightly without church affiliation. Without God affiliation, however, is there any point at all to living? Is not God non-denominational? Is He not unconcerned with creed or color? Have we any instance of His bestowing greater favors on Protestants than upon Catholics; on whites than on blacks; on yellow than on reds. Is not the comforting thing about God the fact that to Him His creation—man—is an individual manifestation of Himself and does not that man receive the most help from God who is in closest communication with Him? In these days of mass-communication, have we not become somewhat negligent of individual communication? Churches seem to be growing bigger and bigger. There are those for whom church attendance is a comfortably social

way to get religion: an hour a week of appropriate music, carefully-worded admonition, a conscience-easing collection plate; a virtuous relaxation over doing the right thing with the right people in the right place. Unquestionably, church affiliation is desirable as thousands of church members will testify. More desirable, however, is God-affiliation because it permits one to cut through the white fences of bigotry within which, even leaning complacently against which, are those church members who glory in what they believe is their vested interest in the Truth. Is it possible for a single denomination to have a vested interest in the Truth any more than for another to have a vested interest in God? Is not salvation an individual problem based entirely on unwavering faith in, intelligent understanding of, and simple communication with, the one God? If we are to steer ourselves safely through the present day crisis, should we not immediately establish as close a contact with God as is humanly possible and then live accordingly? n
