Inner Peace 7 habits of highly peaceful people by Victor Parachin
n n n

WHILE WAITING in a long line at a coffee shop, one woman remains calm and content, while the one behind her is experiencing irritation and frustration. When cut off in traffic, one man simply continues driving toward his destination, while another man blows the car horn shouting obscenities. If nothing is going on, one person sits quietly and enjoys a moment of relaxation, while another begins frantically scrolling through a social media feed on a cellphone. Those three examples reflect the two types of people we are all capable of being: calm, tranquil and peaceful or agitated, anxious and easily angered. The difference between the two types is a narrow one and is dependent upon personal behavior. Here are the seven habits of highly peaceful people, which anyone can incorporate into daily life. They have a routine To have a peaceful mind, it’s essential to establish and maintain rhythm and routine day-by-day. Generally, those who exhibit high levels of peace and calm are individuals who carefully regulate their daily activities. They go to bed at the same time and awaken at the same time; they eat their meals at the same time; they engage in their spiritual practices at the same times each day; they attend worship services regularly. Though they are not full-time monks or nuns, peaceful people structure their daily life in patterns similar to those found in a monastic setting. In so doing,

their nervous system knows what to expect rather than constantly be thrown off by an erratic, unfamiliar schedule. Regularity is foundational for cultivating a harmonious and peaceful mind. They respond rather than react When an unwelcome situation emerges for them, highly peaceful people create a space, a pause. In that brief moment, they adjust their thinking and emotions so that they act in a skillful way. Actor and martial arts expert Chuck Norris relates a story told to him by a friend, who is also a high-level martial artist. This man was at a stop sign waiting for a break in traffic that would allow him to cross a major street safely. The person in the car behind him was impatient and kept honking his horn. Finally losing patience, that driver got out and began to threaten Norris’ friend if he didn’t “find the gas pedal quickly.” Norris’ friend paused, then rolled down the car window and said, “You want to fight. OK, but I have a bad back and you will have to help me out of the car.” The angry man stared briefly, shook his head in confusion and returned to his car. Norris says: “Luckily for the impatient driver, the situation
had been defused by humor. He had no idea how close he had come to being thrashed.” They pray Prayer is the spiritual practice that links the peaceful person to God, the ultimate source of peace as expressed in this biblical prayer of blessing: “The Lord bless you and keep you! The Lord let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you! The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace” (Nm 6:24-26).
To have inner peace on earth simply means increasing attitudes and actions that bring calm and tranquility while reducing those that generate disorder and chaos. When they are troubled, peaceful people pray for guidance; when they are joyful, they pray expressing gratitude; when they are sick, they pray for healing; and, when they are discouraged, they pray for perseverance and patience. Peaceful people also recognize the logic and wisdom of this advice from St. Francis de Sales: “Every one of us needs half an hour of prayer a day, except when we are busy — then we need an hour.”
They spend time outside Being in a natural setting is vital for an overall sense of peacefulness and harmony. That’s why Buddhist monks prefer to meditate outside in natural settings. Science now confirms the wisdom that being outdoors is calming and soothing. For one study, researchers recruited 280 healthy people in Japan where visiting nature parks for therapeutic effect has become a popular practice called Shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing. On one day, half the group was instructed to walk through a forest or wooded area for a few hours, while others walked through a city area. On the second day, they traded places. The scientists found that being outside resulted in “lower concentrations of cortisol (the body’s stress hormone), lower pulse rate, and lower blood pressure,” among other things. They don’t judge Rabbi Joseph Telushkin once received, in the mail, this anonymous prayer, which he finds softens the human tendency to judge harshly: “Help us to remember that the ‘jerk’ who cut us off in traffic last night may be a single mother who worked nine hours that day and who is rushing home to cook dinner, help with

homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious minutes with her children. “Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who couldn’t make change correctly at the register today is a worried 19-year-old student who is preoccupied with whether he passed his final exams and with his fear of not getting a student loan for next semester. “Remind us, Lord, that the scary-looking ‘bum’ begging for money in the same spot every day is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares. “Help us to realize that the old couple walking so slowly through the store aisles, blocking our shopping car, are savoring this moment, because they know that, based on the biopsy report she got back yesterday, this might be the last year they will go shopping together.” They are not troubled by trouble Peaceful people know that life is unpredictable and constantly shifting. So they anticipate good times as well as difficult times flowing with life’s changes and challenges. Buddhist meditation teacher and author Toni Bernhard explains: “Waking up to the realities of the human condition is crucial so that we know what to expect in life. If we are deluded about what to expect, we suffer mentally when things don’t go our way. And so, I want to be awake to the fact that life can be hard at times and that many of my desires and wishes will go unfulfilled. Understanding this helps me accept and be content with my life as it is, because I know that I simply cannot always get what I want — no one can. It’s a reality of the human condition.” They forgive “Inner peace can be reached only when we practice forgiveness. Forgiveness is letting go of the past, and is, therefore, the means for correcting our misperceptions,” notes Gerald Jampolsky, author of “Forgiveness: The Greatest Healer of All” (Simon and Schuster). It’s impossible to be a peaceful person while holding a grudge, harboring feelings of resentment or entertaining thoughts of revenge. That’s why author Karen Salmansohn gives this advice: “Forgive them. All of your ‘thems.’ The more ‘thems’ you can forgive, the better you will feel.” To have inner peace on earth simply means increasing attitudes and actions that bring calm and tranquility while reducing those that generate disorder and chaos. n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

space, opt for a monochromatic look in a dark (almost black) hue. The approach is simultaneously bold and classic, but the secret to this trend is finding a shade that’s rich and deep, but not quite black, then complementing it with fabrics and furnishings that let the hint of color shine. Add Comfort and Warmth Treating your home like a sanctuary never goes out of style, and one way to create a soothing, inviting space is through the use of cozy neutrals. Whether it’s applied to a bedroom retreat or a more bustling space like the living room, a neutral palette can add to the allure of comfort and warmth. Keep the visual interest strong by incorporating subtle patterns, textures and layers of complementary neutral colors. Go Retro It may seem counterintuitive, but vibrant retro shades like orange and yellow, and even warmer neutrals, can help establish a calming vibe within your home. The throwback hues can help your mind connect to moments from the past when life may have been filled with less challenges. This trend with colors like Valspar’s Delightful Moon, Subtle Peach and Sunset Curtains is less about the actual look and more about the mood it evokes for you E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

Beautiful Setting WITH A PATIO RETAINING WALL n n n
JUNE 2022
HUMPTY DUMPTY HAD THE RIGHT IDEA when he sat on a wall, as segmental retaining wall (SRW) systems can be used to create beautiful, versatile outdoor seating solutions. Many businesses expanded outdoor seating out of necessity over the past two years, and retaining walls were up for the challenge. Homeowners also prefer retaining walls for landscaping projects such as seat walls around a fire pit or to create a raised patio to replace a deck. Renowned for the ability to retain earth to prevent erosion and tame slopes to create buildable sites, SRWs, including the VERSA-LOK Retaining Wall System, are beautiful, durable and low-maintenance open-air seating solutions. Dining al fresco A beautiful outdoor living space is a wise home investment, and it’s also become a necessity for hospitality businesses. Many facilities lacking patios built temporary or permanent outdoor spaces for guests during the pandemic. According to the National Restaurant Association, outdoor dining is vital to the industry’s post-pandemic survival and expanding outdoor dining remains a critical need in replenishment of the Restaurant Revitalization Fund federal grant program. After purchasing a tavern in Wisconsin, Darryl Holley hired Ziegler’s Landscapes by Design to build an outdoor entertainment area just a few weeks before the pandemic required temporary closure of the business. Landscaping was deemed an essential business and work continued. Ziegler’s created a low freestanding retaining wall that serves as seating for lawn game spectators and concert-goers. “The only

regret we have is that we didn’t make the patio bigger,” said Holley. “Live music outside draws a lot of people.” Homeowners in Stillwater, Minnnesota, wanted to replace an aging wooden deck while preserving the view of their woods. “With a raised patio design, you have many more design options,” said Andrew Lofboom, a landscape designer with Villa Landscapes. “We used VERSA-LOK to build the support for a paver patio on top. The cost of a raised patio can be less than replacing a deck, and it affords homeowners the option to expand in the future, such as adding an outdoor kitchen or seat walls.” Lofboom chose the VERSA-LOK Standard retaining wall system because it makes both design and installation easier. With a mechanical pinning system and no hollow cores to fill, VERSA-LOK is renowned for versatility, durability and flexibility for creating curves, columns, multi-angled corners and tiers needed for stunning outdoor designs. Sporting views SRWs are surprisingly economical for stadium, stage and outdoor classroom seating at schools, parks and sporting venues. An amphitheater at the University of WisconsinRiver Falls was renovated with a VERSA-LOK Mosaic retaining wall system chosen to replace crumbling limestone seating on the slope across from the bandshell. The elements had taken a toll on the amphitheater, built in 1972 of local limestone. “Natural stone was out of our budget, so we went with VERSA-LOK,” said Joe McIntosh, a grounds supervisor. When Lawrence, Kansas, school officials learned that aluminum bleachers could not be manufactured in time for football season at their new stadium and that they would run about $400 a seat, they searched for a faster and more economical solution. Landplan Engineering and Capitol Concrete Products of Lawrence showed the district that it could save $100-200 per seat by using VERSA-LOK Standard retaining wall units and finish the job in time for the fall season. Retaining walls for the win While SRWs are best known for site development, erosion control and transitioning slopes in a landscape, they also are a solid solution for outdoor seating. From sitting walls and raised patios to stadiums and tiered, bermed seating, retaining walls get the job done beautifully and on budget. n Brandpoint

Gardening with Kids n n n
JUNE 2022
AFTER MONTHS OF COOL WEATHER, the first hint of spring will likely have the whole family eager to dive into outdoor activities. This year, as you begin tackling the garden, find ways to get the youngest family members in on the action, too. Not only is gardening an activity you can enjoy together, there are numerous ways to incorporate age-appropriate, teachable moments from counting and colors to responsible care of living things. Creating a positive first experience with gardening can start with this simple advice: n Dedicate a spot for a junior garden, which allows you to instill a sense of pride and ownership in the little gardener while protecting your own garden areas from ambitious young hands. n Provide appropriate tools in child sizes. Just as you would teach a child the finer points of baseball using a bat and glove, demonstrate the joys of gardening with tools such as a rake, hoe and trowel, all of which can
be found in sizes more manageable for little helpers. n Let the kids choose what to plant. Whether flowers or food plants, allow children to make their own decisions (within reason) about what they would like to grow. This can help them engage in the magic of watching items they selected emerge from the ground and grow into their finished forms. n Encourage exposure to unfamiliar plants that entice the senses with appealing smells and flavors. Herbs such as chives, mint and basil are good choices, or consider edible flowers such as pansies or violets. n Set an example for your child to imitate by giving regular and proper care to your own garden. Remember to bring the lesson full circle by enjoying the bounty of your garden together, whether it’s a small hand-cut bouquet or a meal featuring your child’s fresh-grown produce. “THIS IS THE DAY the Lord hath made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” is so simple a Bible statement that we often pass it by or let it pass us by. Perhaps we are more accustomed to “This is the day eight people were killed on the highways, five more than one year ago today” or “Today hundreds of people have congregated to protest a shooting and vowed reprisal if their demands are not met.” Our minds have become so conditioned to the negative side of today’s thinking that we have apparently forgotten that to recognize any other side lies within our own power. The skeptics are already gathering their forces. “Suppose this is the day the Lord has made. What’s so remarkable about that? If the earth turns on its orbit, every 24 hours we have a new day, regardless of who made it. What’s more, all these bad things are happening every day, so exactly what is there to rejoice about? An all-embracing freedom, as well as an unmitigated blessing available to all persons, is the right to choose what one wants to think. What we think determines what we are. Basically, our behavior, as well as our experience, is the result of our thoughts. Those of us who are wise choose to believe this is the day the Lord has made. And if you would quibble over the word Lord, substitute Creative Principle, the one and only Power that could cause the sun to rise and spring to take its turn in the evolution of the seasons. And why is that cause for rejoicing? Because it establishes
the fact that God is, Creative Principle is, a force for good more powerful than man is. Why argue or struggle or battle against a truth so significant in the scheme of things; namely, that God establishes hope for a better world. Why not drop our shoulders, let go of all the tangled thinking that proves nothing, and relax in the simple fact that today is God’s day and therefore good must be in this day. Long-stemmed tulips are colorful flashes that greet one everywhere; lilacs are bursting with fragrance. Gardens, small and large, are alive with the joy of existence. If we would make our daily experience a better one, we have no choice but to tune in to God, to turn our thinking to God, to be still and know that God is, that good is. No one can tune in to God and be miserable or critical or disagreeable or intolerant. God and good are synonymous, and the instant we think good, good comes into our experience. Walk into a dark room, push an electric button, and the room is flooded with light. The connection has been made and nothing but light can result. Exactly the same thing occurs when we connect with God. We make our contact with a Power greater than man, we rest in that contact, and gradually a sense of peace comes upon us, ultimately enfolds us, and we are aware, within ourselves of a Presence and a Power that no material beliefs can penetrate. What happens? We go about whatever business is at hand, joyous within ourselves that we have proved, “This is the day the Lord hath made.” It is for this we are rejoicing and being glad n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S
