Discover the beauty of the
Seychelles Just imagine lying on a sandy beach with the sun shining down on you. You are on a tropical isle full of lush vegetation, sandy beaches and amazing wildlife. You can watch the giant tortoises crawling about lazily, island hop around the islands, walk the trails and charter yachts during the day and in the evening, you can enjoy delicious Cajun cuisine in a five-star restaurant and take in a show or do some gambling at the local casino. This dream can be yours if you visit the Seychelles Islands. n n n

These mystical islands are alive with some of the most extraordinary plant and animal species on the planet. Almost 50% of Seychelles 455 km² landmass has been preserved in its natural state as national parks and reserves. These unique islands are home to nearly 100 different plants, 12 species of birds, 2 types of bats, 11 amphibians, 2 types of snakes, 4 types of turtle or tortoise and numerous insects that can only be seen in this magical island getaway.
Made up of 41 of the oldest mid-ocean inner granite islands and 74 outer coral islands, the 115 islands that make up the Seychelles Islands in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa are world famous for their beauty. With 3 National Heritage Sites, 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 4 religious sites and a plethora of art galleries there is no shortage of culture or beauty in the Seychelles Islands. The Domaine de Val des Pres (Craft Village) is part of

the Patrimwann on the island of Mahe. These national historic sites highlight the Kreol heritage of the islands. The other attractions in the Patrimwann are the Kreol Institute, La Bastille and the Ecomuseum (or EcomusÊe La Planie St. Andre). The other National Heritage Site is L’Union Estate on the island of La Digue. Featuring giant land tortoises, a traditional copra mill and kiln, and a Plantation House surrounded by beautiful gardens

full of natural granite boulders, visitors can walk the grounds on foot or ride on the back of one of the many horses on the estate. The estate also features a natural beach known as the ‘Source d’Argent’ that is one of the most photographed beaches on earth and the cemetery of the original island settlers. The first of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites on the islands is the Vallée de Mai on Praslin. Administered by the Seychelles Islands Foundation, this ancient forest boasts over 6,000 of the world famous Coco-de-mer trees and is so beautiful that it was once speculated to be the Garden of Eden, straight from the Bible. The Vallée is also made famous by being the only known locale in which the endangered Black Parrot can still be found. The second UNESCO Site is the Aldabra Atoll. The biggest raised coral atoll in the world, the Aldabra Atoll was fabled to have been first named by Arabian seafarers in the 9th Century A.D. Its untouched and natural beauty is what earned the atoll the title of an UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Seychelles Island Foundation now works to protect its unique plant and animal life. While there is a small settlement
and a research station on the atoll, there are no tourist accommodations and the only access is by chartered yacht.
With a warm climate all year long, the Seychelles Islands are beautiful at any time. However, if sailing and windsurfing are your favorite things, April and October are the calmest months with virtually no wind. The strongest winds are found between May and September with the winds ranging from 10-20 knots. However, the Seychelles Sailing Cup is an international event that is held every January when the winds are still evident but calmer, ranging from 8-12 knots. If your goal is to take in the natural beauty of the Seychelles Islands, the best time to visit is between May and September when the southeasterly trade winds are blowing. The weather is slightly cooler and breezier making it the most comfortable time for walking the many trails and observing the local wildlife and amazing plant life. As the weather is slightly cooler during this time of year, the animals are more active and the plants more likely to show off their surreal blossoms. From the incredible weather that lasts all year to the fantastic foliage and awe-inspiring wildlife, the Seychelles Islands very well could be as close to Heaven on Earth as we can get. The beauty and mysticism that abounds in this amazing wonderland is something that you are guaranteed to remember for the rest of your life! n

Ever wonder how designers make the rooms you see in magazines or on decorating shows look so good? It doesn’t always depend on paint colors or fabric choices. From fresh and airy, to intimate and cozy—and everything in between—lighting sets the tone of a room and should be an integral part of its design and layout. And you can make dramatic changes by doing something as easy as switching out a light bulb. So if you want to give a room a makeover, or just freshen it up a bit, use these tips from the lighting pros at
SYLVANIA to brighten things up. Types of Lighting Not only does a good lighting plan make a room more inviting, it also makes it more functional. To create a good lighting plan, you’ll need different kinds of light: n Ambient—Provides overall illumination and a comfortable level of brightness, allowing people to see and move around safely and easily. n Task—Helps you perform a specific activity, such as reading or playing games, by concentrating light in a particular place.
n Accent—Sets the mood and highlights certain areas and objects, such as paintings, walls and collectibles. n Decorative—Fixtures become an element of the space themselves, such as chandeliers or pendants. The type of light bulbs you use matter as well. Due to the EISA Act of 2007, traditional incandescent light bulbs will eventually be phased out; however there are several energyefficient options, ranging from CFLs to halogen or LED light bulbs. Sarasota & Cocoa A Tale of Two beaches
While Florida is known for alligators, hurricanes and theme parks, it's a most prominent resource is its 1,350 miles of coastline. People all over the world travel to Florida to take in some sun on one of their many award-winning beaches. Two popular beaches are~ n n n

Cocoa Beach Located on Florida's east coast, Cocoa Beach gained fame during the 1960s due to Kennedy Space Center, NASA, and the space race. The setting for "I Dream of Jeannie," this kitschy little beach community has that mid-century Florida feel. The Cocoa Beach is often referred to as "beachside" by most of the locals since it's located on a thin strip of land that has the Banana River to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Cocoa Beach is lined with resorts and the famous Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier. On the pier you can grab a bite, after a busy day of surfing, in restaurants like Keith's Oyster Bar, the Rikki Tikki Tavern, and Pelican's Bar and Grill, giving you Oceanside scenic views while you dine. You can also drive down a bit further on A1A and choose to play in the surf at Jetty Park where you for a small fee you can avoid the crowds. There is also camping and RV hook-ups available. Cocoa Beach's waves are a little choppier, and there are often riptide warnings, so make sure you are supervising your children carefully.Sarasota
Sarasota Beach Located on the West Coast, Sarasota is home to six of Florida's most beautiful beaches. The west coast beaches boast gentler tides and gorgeous sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico. The influence of global cultures is increasingly visible in home décor as technology expands homeowners’ worldviews. Acting on the inspiration of global trends can be as simple as shifting your outlook to bringing eye-catching features and everyday functions into your home. For example, playing with color, replacing doors and incorporating unique accents can help contribute to an on-trend style that flows seamlessly from room to room. Colors offer the opportunity to create a mood and update a space. Doors provide an average of 800 square feet of previously untapped design potential that can add visual interest and enhance the functionality of a room. As you make plans to redesign spaces within your home, watch for these trends in 2020. minimalism and timeless devotion to well-made elements that are beautiful in their own simplicity. Muted colors like blue-gray and pale rose come to life on walls and in fabrics. Doors made of dark metal and wood paired with glass panels bring natural light and warmth into the home. Urban Country This trend brings the look and feel of rural living to urban spaces by pairing crisp white and warm neutrals with ornate fixtures. Elements like a craftsman-style front door with sidelights help to accentuate the home’s original detailing, while well-crafted, handmade pieces bring the heart and soul of country living into the space. Urban Country is perfect for the fast-paced urbanite looking to live a more balanced, slow-paced lifestyle. Rustic Luxury Geared toward those who need a personal space where they can restore energy and find balance, Rustic Luxury design helps homeowners disconnect from the demands of everyday life. With this trend, the focus is on creating harmony between natural and architectural design elements. Try mixing sculptural design pieces and greenery with natural wood doors and concrete benches for a calming counterbalance to frenetic, fast-paced living.
Acting on the inspiration of global trends can be as simple as shifting your outlook to bringing eye-catching features and everyday functions into your home. Pretty and Calm As female buying-power continues to increase, spaces are being redesigned to fit the lifestyles of modern women who often appreciate both contemporary and traditional design. Biophilic elements mixed with pale-hued colors, luxurious touches and textured glass doors are all key features for Pretty and Calm design. To achieve this style, play with textures that feature warm yet bold colors like pale blue, sunshine yellow and sage. Don’t be afraid to experiment with dissimilar materials to find the right combination of interest and comfort. Live and Work If you’re one of more than 3.4 million Americans working from home at least half of the time, you may require transitional spaces that accommodate both productivity and downtime. To adopt this design trend, consider the use of furniture and products that can serve multiple purposes. For example, modern barn doors in bold tones of vibrant orange or cool blue can provide privacy during work hours and serve as an industrial design accent off-hours. Mediterranean Escape If you classify yourself as a traveler, you may favor the style of 28
Mediterranean Escape. People who travel tend to bring blended influences from various cultures home. This trend helps homeowners showcase the intricate detail and culture in those treasured pieces. Paired with wrought iron accents, warm colors and arched doorways, Mediterranean Escape adds sophistication and story to nearly any space. Trends don’t have to impede individual design. Global influences like sustainability, craftsmanship and simplicity can be the foundation for creating an environment tailored to meet unique lifestyles and needs. architectural shingles, all reminiscent of a Cape Cod beach estate. A lower level deck is visible from the upper level deck space. The lower level deck offers beautiful views of the lake and provides a delightful and welcoming space to entertain guests outdoors. The lower deck is flanked by a Lannonstone patio on one side and a New York slate patio on the other side. A path of crushed granite leads from these spaces past Hosta beds to the lake, where a new permanent pier extends over the sparkling water. The home’s lower level is accessible via a stairway off the foyer. The lower level living space is welcoming and consistent in design with that of the rest of the home. An additional family room on the lower level includes a natural split granite fireplace along one wall, a travertine floor, and a distinctive ceiling in alternating walnut and cherry woods. Windows in this room face the lake, while a door in this space leads to the outside deck and down to the lake beyond. A kitchen on the home’s lower level allows for seamless entertaining. Wolf appliances and a Sub-Zero refrigerator and wine fridge allow for expert food storage and preparation. Specially designed coffered ceilings here and throughout the lower level are an added design treasure. Double doors lead from the kitchen to an exercise area. Also adjoining the kitchen, for additional entertainment options, the home includes a movie theater room with a ten-foot movie screen, star-like ceiling lights, and 16 reclining leather seats. what room you’re looking to improve, there is an energy-efficient light option that will be a perfect fit. Dining Room n Using dimmers and layering with light gives you flexibility for different occasions. n For an elegant look, blend low levels of light sources throughout the room. n When installing light over the dining room table, be careful not to create shadows on the faces of your guests. Placing additional light sources elsewhere in the room helps to balance the light. n Use adjustable accent lamps with SYLVANIA halogen bulbs to highlight plants, artwork, or special furniture pieces. These bulbs are fully dimmable and use between 22 and 33 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs. Living Room n For general lighting, use fixtures with a dimmer. The light source is concealed, and with dimming capabilities you can change the lighting of the room for various activities from reading to movie watching. A good choice for these fixtures would be the SYLVANIA Ultra A-Line 12-watt LED bulbs. They’re the brightest replacement for the typical 60-watt incandescent bulbs, while using 80 percent less energy. They also last 25 times longer. n Wall sconces and floor lamps are good sources of task lighting for reading or playing games, while track fixtures can be used to highlight art work or unique wall treatments such as wall washing or glazing. n Place light sources at various heights within the room to add visual interest. n Use translucent shades on table lamps to contribute to the ambient light level. Bedrooms n General lighting can be provided by ceiling fixtures, chandeliers, fan lights, recessed downlights or wall sconces that use halogen or LED bulbs. n Use a floor-mounted directional fixture to project light through plants from the floor to soften a room with interesting shadows. Place the light behind a large plant or indoor tree and aim it through the leaves towards the ceiling. n Use a low wattage energy efficient bulb to brighten up the closet. These bulbs have a long life and offer energy-efficiency and quality color. n Provide light for reading by choosing swingarm or flexible bedside lamps. n EXCLUSIVELY YOURS

Functional Laundry Room n n n
March 2020
A laundry room may be one of the spaces that you use the most, but cramped quarters and clutter can hinder your productivity. Eliminate the excuses and get your laundry room under control with these tips to add function to your washing routine. Use space wisely. Your laundry room may not have a big footprint, but you probably have more usable space than you realize. Install shelves or storage units on the walls and consider the ceiling as a spot to hang a floating drying rack. Don’t overlook the back of the door, where you can mount a storage system or use an over-the-door alternative. Maximize storage. Many laundry rooms suffer from a lack of storage, which hinders space to fold and manage laundry while making the room less pleasant overall. A durable, attractive organization system like Dimensions by ClosetMaid can add instant
organization and style to your laundry room. The system provides numerous design options, convenient accessories and configurations of cabinets and drawers, accommodating virtually any space. Resist wrinkles. Prevent unsightly wrinkles by hanging garments straight out of the dryer. A hanging rod is easy to install and lets you take advantage of vertical space in smaller rooms. Be sure to also stock up on hangers of various styles so you always have an ample supply ready when the buzzer sounds that another load is ready for your attention. Promote ventilation. Another common issue in laundry rooms is limited ventilation, which can promote mold, affect air quality and hinder air drying for special garments. A clever way to enhance ventilation while increasing your storage space is ventilated
shelving that helps keep air flow moving. For example, ClosetMaid’s Premium Wood Kits feature sturdy slatted shelves to stash your laundry essentials and can include accessories like hanging rods. Create a folding station. One of the biggest laundry pitfalls is folding and putting away clean clothes. A clear, clean space in the laundry room can help nudge you toward completing the task more efficiently. If you have front-loading machines, it may be as simple as adding a counter or sturdy shelf above them. If you use top-loaders, you may need to get more creative. If there’s room, a laundry sorter with a flat top is a good solution. Or if floor space is at a premium, you might consider a shelf that mounts to the wall and folds down when you need it. Some weeks ago as a snow-laden wind howled its way through the woods, the birches bent with its force; the Norways, stiffly upright, fought it proudly, although their branches quivered under the onslaught. A conical shaped suet feeder swung crazily, like a jerky gymnast showing off his tricks. To the side of the feeder clung a chickadee, his tiny claws dug deep into the suet, his black-topped head bobbing as he hammered away at the chunk of fat. He was oblivious to the storm, oblivious of the wild ride the feeder was taking him on, oblivious of everything except his desire for food. Fear was no part of his thinking. Evidently birds have a built-in radar system that keeps them in touch with the Spirit within; hence, they know no fear. A Bible verse we humans would do well to remember tells us that “God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” A corollary to that statement might be “There is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.” Has the time not come for us to recognize that Spirit within and be grateful for the understanding that comes through the inspiration of the Almighty? What is it we need to understand? That we need not fear. We need not fear war nor lack nor revolution nor economic disaster. We need not fear anything because God’s gifts to us do not include fear. Fear is an unknown quantity in God’s universe. John tells us that “perfect love casteth out fear.” Love of whom? Love of God. Love of God casts out fear. How? Because we are assured “Thou wilt
keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee.” If, then, in our love for Him we keep our minds stayed on God, we will be kept in perfect peace, and there can be no fear in peace that comes from the Father within. What about the other gifts—power, love, a sound mind? Paul said, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” There is power available to each of us as it was to Paul. All we need have is the conviction of that statement’s truth. Paul believed it unwaveringly. What about the power of love? Read the 13th chapter of First Corinthians—“Faith, hope and charity but the greatest of these is charity (love).” A sound mind? What constitutes a sound mind? One that recognizes God, Infinite Intelligence, as its source, and never deviates from that premise. A mind that realizes the significance of “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding; in all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths.” Finally, in Paul’s advice to the Philippians we recognize his concept of a sound mind when he exhorts them “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” We, too, can stand firmly in the face of whatever storms may arise when we rule out of our thinking as power anything that does not come from God. The Omnipresence, Omnipotence and Omniscience of the Father within are our security from now unto eternity. Let us rest in that and be glad. n
