A Showhouse with a Majestic History The 2022 Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse’s Architectural Gem on Milwaukee’s East Side b y K ay B ro ge l ma n
SITTING MAJESTICALLY on the edge of a high bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, one of Milwaukee’s finest Tudor-style mansions has been chosen as the 2022 Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse. Located at 3230 East Kenwood Boulevard in Milwaukee, the 25,553-square-foot grand mansion was originally designed with 14 bedrooms, 9 bathrooms and 10 fireplaces for Myron T. MacLaren and Gertrude Schlesinger Roller MacLaren by Fitzhugh Scott, Sr. The asymmetrical structure is architecturally significant as one of the Midwest’s finest and purest example of Tudor-style mansions as it adheres closely

to the historical precedent of the Tudor style. It was constructed with authentic materials, with no expense spared, and the very finest craftsmanship. It is also significant as one of the major works of the firm Scott & Mayer Architects. The permit to build the house was obtained in July, 1920 and shows an estimated cost of $85,000 although the final cost was said to be $335,000. Before construction began, to prevent erosion, Mrs. MacLaren insisted that the steep embankment of the bluff be reinforced with drain tile, steel rods, concrete walls and thick plantings. Construction was started in 1920 and was not completed until June, 1923. Gertrude MacLaren and her father traveled to Europe several times during the construction period to buy decorative elements from estates and castles in England, Scotland and France for inclusion in the house. The trips to Europe and the death of Mrs. MacLaren’s father in 1921 halted the construction work several times. The original plan for the estate included a sunken garden surrounding the “largest private swimming pool in Wisconsin”, a garage connected to the home by an eightfoot high underground tunnel, tennis courts, a fish pond, and a private beach at the foot of the bluff. The estate’s grounds were filled with over 100 elm trees, which were lost to Dutch elm disease in the 1970s. Footings for

for a garage, which was to match the style of the house, were built but construction never materialized. The MacLarens had purchased the same stone to be used on the exterior of the house. They buried these materials on the site for safekeeping for the garage they had planned to build. Recently, the current homeowner located the stone two feet below the ground. Architectural historian, H. Russell Zimmerman, has designed a new garage. The foundation has been poured and the garage will be midconstruction during the showhouse run. The exterior is clad with imported brown Plymouth stone. The original roof was made of slate quarried in Scotland. That roof was replaced in 2011 with compatible Vermont slate of variegated green and purple. The roof begins with large and thick pieces of slate at the eaves and tapers down to smaller and thinner pieces at the ridge. The leaded gutters hold the motifs of the Tudor rose and French fleur-delis. The roof is pierced by numerous chimney stacks with tall chimney pots. The façade includes an arched opening recessed within an arched porch. The large oriel window above the arched main entrance holds four hand-painted heraldic crests purchased by Mrs. MacLaren and said to have come from old English castles and manor houses. Numerous casement windows are placed randomly and tall gables decorate the asymmetrical exterior. Window sashes hold highly ornamental leaded glazing patterns. A corner tower contains the entrance to the service wing. The grandeur of the interior holds many treasures as well. The Garden/Sunroom room has terrazzo floors and a hand-pressed plaster ceiling. A narrow staircase used by the children coming in from the pool through the Sunroom led them straight upstairs without dripping water on the main staircase. It was also used by Mrs. MacLaren when coming in from the garden with muddy boots. Both MacLaren daughters were married in the Sunroom. The Library features a green marble fireplace, built-in book cases and decorative dental ceiling moldings. The family gathered in the Library every night to play games or listen to the radio. The first commercial radio broadcast was received on Election Day, November 2, 1920. This room was recently transformed into a Billiards Room. The Living Room walls are a reproduction of Elizabethan oak paneling assembled with wooden dowel pegs that hide a number of compartments and storage areas. in the room is the large carved stone fireplace with a rose motif in the raised plaster above it. Inside the fireplace, as in all others in the house, is a cast iron fireback (one of which is dated A.D.1588) installed to protect the intricate stone or marble from the heat of the fire. Imported stained glass medallions from France decorate the Front Entry Hall windows. A broad staircase with a carved balustrade leads to the second floor. White oak was used for the floors in the mahogony paneled Dining Room. A fireplace of green Italian marble, built-in bookcases and, decorative ceiling cornices grace the room. The spectacular crystal chandelier was transported from Paris to Milwaukee by Mrs. MacLaren’s father in five suitcases. It was understood by the family that they were to convene in the Dining Room for dinner each evening. The Breakfast Room features hand-hewn beams and two sandstone walls. Two walls facing Lake Michigan present leaded and stained glass windows holding more heraldic crests. The single piece on the northeast corner, with a ship at the bottom, is said to be the MacLaren family crest. The Kitchen originally hosted a special opal glass-lined refrigerator that opened from both sides. There was a counter-top island with a lazy susan. Mrs. MacLaren kept her silver flatware and jewelry in a walk-in safe at the south end of the kitchen when she was traveling. An elevator shaft between the Foyer and Butler’s Pantry was constructed but no elevator was ever installed. A Help’s Room just inside the tower entrance was used as a dining room and lounge for the servants. The Kitchen/Butler’s Pantry and Help’s Room were all reconfigured under UWM’s ownership. The space has recently been transformed into a state-of-the art English Country Kitchen and Mud Room. The second floor had six bedrooms, one each for the MacLarens and the four children. All but one had a fireplace. Mrs. MacLaren’s south bedroom had leaded glass windows on three sides of the room. The current owner has reconfigured this area into a master bedroom suite. A library was used as Mrs. MacLaren’s office where she planned many social activities. One more small room with a corner sink was referred to as the Nurse’s Room, but was probably used by the nanny. Tucked into the corners were small rooms used by the servants as a sewing/ironing room, a large walk-in linen closet, and other storage spaces. purpose. The large room on the northeast corner was the children’s playroom. It featured a swing hanging from the ceiling and the daughters kept their dollhouses in this room. There was a suite of rooms on the south side where a family member or guest could be isolated should they contract a communicable disease. Two bedrooms, one for the patient and one for a nurse and a full bathroom, could all be closed off completely from the rest of the house. The cook’s room was located near the northwest stairway and other rooms were designated for the upstairs maid, the downstairs made, houseman, outside caretaker and butler. Several small closets were used for storage of furs, trunks, and draperies. Ten fireplaces filled the house, five of which have been walled in. The current homeowner has plans to bring all of them back to their original state over the course of the next several years. Myron T. MacLaren was born in Milwaukee in 1886. His mother died shortly after his birth and he spent the majority of his childhood living in Canada with his grandparents. After moving back to Milwaukee to live with his father, he attended the old Milwaukee Academy and went on to graduate from Williams College in Massachusetts. After his return, he worked for his father who was the manager of Gimbel Bros. Subsequently, he worked as a bank teller, a bond salesman, and a mortgage broker for several financial institutions and businesses. Gertrude Schlesinger was born in 1889, the daughter of Ferdinand and Matilda Stern Schlesinger. Her father, a prosperous industrialist, was reputed to be the “most wealthy Milwaukeean of his generation”. The family frequently traveled to Europe. In 1909, on one of the trips, Gertrude met and married Oskar Roller, an Austrian army officer. They had one son, Gordon, and lived primarily in Europe until she filed for divorce in 1917. Oskar died shortly before the divorce was finalized in September 1918. Gertrude married Myron MacLaren later that same year. Soon after the marriage, Myron began working for the Schlesinger family business. He soon became a member of the most prominent clubs in Milwaukee and Gertrude served on several board of directors. Myron eventually left the family business and became an officer of the Mitchell Street State Bank. In addition to Gertrude’s son Gordon from her first marriage, the MacLarens adopted three more children. Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks and Gertrude was named after her mother, but called Peggy. Myron and Gertrude MacLaren were divorced in 1927. Gertrude remained in the mansion while Myron moved to the Astor Hotel. He married Mary A. Stock in 1930 and moved to Whitefish Bay. He was widowed in 1934. Gertrude married Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company executive Clifford McMillen in 1929 and moved to New York. Gertrude and Clifford were divorced in 1936. From 1928 to 1936 the mansion was empty and
was maintained by a caretaker. With Gertrude and Myron both single, they remarried in Manhattan in 1936 and moved back into the mansion. During this time, the property was described in several newspaper articles as “the scene of much of Milwaukee’s social life”. Myron died in the home in 1941 and is buried in Forest Home Cemetery. Gertrude lived alone in the house for several years until she married Theron MacLeod in 1948. They then moved to California and lived next door to Fairbanks and Pickford. They divorced in 1950 and shortly after Gertrude married Douglas Parmentier of Beverly Hills who died in 1967. In 1969, Gertrude married

William Joseph Marios. She died in 1974 at the age of 84 and is buried in California. During the MacLaren time in the mansion, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks visited several times. They were so impressed by the style and elegance of the home it is said that they used the MacLaren mansion as the inspiration for their renowned home “Pickfair”, a remodeled hunting lodge in Beverly Hills. In 1949 at a cost of $75,000 plus $5,000 for furnishings, the mansion was acquired by the Board of Regents of Normal Schools, State of Wisconsin (also known as the Milwaukee State Teacher’s College) to be used as a women’s residence hall. It accommodated 50 women. It was named Downer College Hall from 1950 to 1952 and Kenwood Hall from 1952 to 1964. In early 1960, Eleanor Roosevelt spent the night in Kenwood Hall while at UWM delivering a speech on women’s rights. After its tenure as a dorm, the mansion was renamed Kenwood Conference Center and housed UWM’s Center for Great Lakes as well as the Office of Continuing Education for Adults from 1969 to 1975. The UWM Alumni Association and UWM Foundation occupied the building from the late 1970s to 2010. The name was formerly changed to the UWM Alumni House in 1983. The UWM Alumni Association and the UWM Foundation occupied the building along with the Helen Bader Institute for Non-Profit Management and WUWM Innovative Weather offices. In 2011, the Alumni Association moved to the Hefter Conference Center at 3217 N. Lake Drive and the Foundation to Cambridge Commons. UWM will retain an easement on the property to allow freshwater intake from Lake Michigan for cooling other buildings on the campus. In 1991, the City of Milwaukee’s Historic Preservation Commission designated the Myron T. MacLaren House a Historic Structure. It is listed on the Wisconsin State Historical Registry and is located in the Historic Water Tower Neighborhood. It also has an interior historical easement from the State Historical Society. Andy Nunemaker, Milwaukee entrepreneur and philanthropist, bought the mansion in January, 2021. Andy is committed to restoring the original single- family mansion back to its original purpose and grandeur. The MacLaren residence is the third house that Andy has graciously shared with Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse to be used as its major annual fundraiser for the benefit of the Medical College of Wisconsin’s research for breast cancer and prostate cancer. Three
Generations Serving The North Shore
In 1974, when Maureen (Mo) Quinlevan’s oldest four of seven children were entering college, she made a decision that would blossom with long-lasting positive results. She decided to start her career in real estate, and from this choice, the Quinlevan family would grow their successful and well-known business with three generations of realtors serving the North Shore and Ozaukee County. n n n
“I THOUGHT IT WAS a good time to get into business,” Mo Quinlevan remembered. She had a passion for and interest in working with people and homes, and sensed that a career in real estate would be an ideal fit. “I thought it would work for me, and it did,” she said in a recent interview. Mo Quinlevan’s son Mike enjoyed watching his mother’s satisfaction and success as she grew her business through the years, and in 1988, when his own first child was born, joined the real estate business. In Mike Quinlevan’s words, like his mother, he “always felt drawn to the real estate world and the idea of working directly with families finding their next home.” Mike combined independent and collaborative work with Mo when he first entered the real estate field, but the two eventually joined forces as a team in 1995.
M AY 2 0 2 2
“And then, throughout the years, we were always one of the top realtors in the North Shore and Ozaukee County,” Mike recalled. Mike Quinlevan, currently of Quinlevan & Armitage, Shorewest Realtors, takes special pride in offering his clients “an extensive network of contacts in the industries” to help them ready their homes for sale. He enjoys helping people throughout the entire home buying and selling process, and feels honored to be involved “in making one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives” and “making sure the process is as smooth and seamless as possible.” Quinlevan noted in particular the skills and resources he offers clients who are moving into town for a job transfer. He enjoys helping these clients establish themselves in their new homes and communities. Mike Quinlevan’s favorite aspect of his

current work, in his words, is “finding the buyer the perfect home, especially in this current fast-paced market.” He also noted that he enjoys “putting his knowledge and experience into writing the offer that wins the property, when many times, there are 10-20 offers on a property.” There is “not a better phone call to make than, ‘You got it!’” Quinlevan noted of his many successful transactions. The fast-paced nature of the real estate market today is possibly also the biggest challenge faced by realtors, according to Quinlevan. But his positive outlook motivates him, driving his continued success in the business. “Getting a listing or selling a home gives you the excitement to move on to the next one,” Quinlevan reflected.

Both Mo and Mike Quinlevan value trusted and lasting relationships with their clients. According to Mike, these connections are built “by going the extra mile and giving (people) the service that a lot of people don’t give in today’s real estate market.” He described the passion, dedication and commitment required to make a successful real estate business a reality: “This is an industry where those who are at the top of the industry—we’re working nights and weekends to get the job done. But it’s all worth it, because we love it.”
“We take the respect for the clients that my mother started with and continue to pass this on. We take that to a new level with technology and serving people even better than we have over the years.” The Quinlevan family’s passion for providing exemplary service to their clients has been rewarded by their clients’ faith in these top realtors. Mike Quinlevan noted that they have been privileged to serve multiple generations of the same family returning to buy or sell their homes. “When you’ve served grandparents

and parents, and the third generation decides to put trust in you, it really means a lot,” Quinlevan explained. Within the Quinlevan family, the natural proclivity for success is apparent through three generations as well. In 2016, Mo Quinlevan decided to hand over the reins to Mike and retired. In 2018, Mike’s son Keenan Quinlevan joined Mike in the family business. Mike noted that Keenan “has the same drive and ethics as Mo and I.” Mike noted the unique sense of pride brought by having “a child that thrives in the business as you do and picks up on what’s important. You can learn how to sell, but to really succeed it takes instinct, which Keenan has.” “I always remember growing up, hearing my dad talk about business at the dinner table and having an immediate interest in what was going on. After working in the medical field for eight years, I decided to take the plunge and join my dad and couldn’t be happier with my decision,” Keenan stated. In January 2020, Mike and Keenan teamed up with Tory Bruce Armitage, another thirdgeneration realtor, and started Quinlevan & Armitage. “Tory, who also had proved herself to be a top agent in the market, shared the same sophistication and work ethic that my father and grandmother do. It was a no-brainer to team up with Tory,” Keenan said. As Quinlevan & Armitage grew, in 2021, Mike’s niece, Claire Quinlevan, joined the business. Mike hopes that as he works with his son and niece, he will help prepare them to carry the family name and business into the future, possibly even expanding to the fourth generation. The Quinlevans bring a unique multigenerational perspective to their highly successful realty team. Through lasting partnerships built on a foundation of exemplary service and trust, they are able to offer clients unparalleled service and successful transactions. As Mike Quinlevan summarized, “We take the respect for the clients that my mother started with and continue to pass this on. We take that to a new level with technology and serving people even better than we have over the years.” For Mo Quinlevan, retirement has brought additional treasured time with her family, which now includes 25 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. The connections she built during her years as a successful realtor continue to remain a bright and abiding presence in her life as well. As she reflected on her career, she summarized, “Some of the people you meet in real estate become friends for life.” n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

WHEN THE OWNERS of an old stone cottage in Elm Grove decided to install new wood floors in the kitchen and family room last year, they had no hint of the surprises to come. They now say they should’ve known. The house began life in the 1920s as a sturdy apple barn built amid an orchard on the west side of town. The apples are long gone but the home’s roots, its wood and stone heart has returned. Converted to a residence in the early ‘30s, many rooms, window bays, additions, and patios have been added over the decades, some very much honoring the massive wooden beams and thick stone walls throughout much of the home, some not so much. What was thought to be a simple thing – those new wooden floors in the kitchen – the house itself seemed to take over, reasserting its hundred-year-old self. Widening, opening up the kitchen entry from the dining room – an easy thing to do, right? – led to the discovery of eight wooden beams in the kitchen ceiling – stout beams from 19th century Wisconsin trees hidden by 20th century plaster all these years. The contractor asked, “Do you want to keep going, see where this leads?” The owners exclaimed, “Yes!”
Which led to the discovery of more big beams, all part of the original structure all previously invisible, including a fortress-like corner of the original stone exterior of the house. That corner, shedding its 60’s wood paneling cover-up, is now part of the new interior. Adding a vintage freshly cleaned and polyurethaned seventeen-foot wood beam and several other pillars from a Waukesha County barn not only helps hold the house up but provides a lovely new open frame through which to view the kitchen from the new family room. Faux stone masonry walls and backsplashes echo the authentic stone found in other parts of the original house. With contemporary touches such as a large William Morris fabric installation with an apple tree motif accenting a built-in bench in the kitchen and extensive halogen lighting, the project demonstrates how a kind of twenty-first century open concept can energize an old stone apple barn. Beginning with a new floor, a simple idea, the home rose up, shrugging off decades of design detours, coming back to where it began. The presence of the past confirmed. n

GOD’S CORNER n n n

MAY IS THAT MONTH of the year when God appears on earth to those who have eyes to see and ears to hear. At this point the some might mutter, “Another one of those Pollyannaish theories: it isn’t raining rain to me, it’s raining violets.” Not true. These are just non-believers minus eyes to see and ears to hear, and for so limited an outlook one must have compassion. Before condemning them, however, why not suggest their stepping into a garden with you? See those inquisitive green shoots pushing their way through the soil into the sunlit warmth of a spring day? They are the result of the life-force within them that nudges on their growth until they have fulfilled God’s purpose for them. The identical life-force that nudges our growth. The life that is God, the very life that constitutes your being and mine is at work in this fascinating month of May. Notice those lacy tendrils on the birches? Before one is actually aware of the miracle, those birch branches will be a glorious mass of green leaves in vivid contrast to the clean white bark of the trunk. Birches remind me of buoyant youth on the march just as the tightly curled reddish pink buds on the maple tree put me in mind of a birthday gift carefully concealed in beautiful wrappings. What do the wonders of nature portend? That the life-force that is God is at work not only within us but all around us. God appearing as life, as growth, as beauty,
as joy. If, however, one is spiritually blind, that, alas, is a real loss. And if you are immune to bird calls and trills and songs, if the chirp of crickets and the gentle cadence of katydids arouses no response in your soul, then indeed the spirit within you is in need of revival. No one need be a lump living from dawn to dusk, from birth to death with no understanding of the pulsating life-force that can make of each day a glorious adventure. Why lose the “trailing clouds of glory” with which we came into being? A mind so limited and uninspired that it is unmoved by the loveliness of nature and its orderly precision in reproduction must be entirely barren of any spiritual sense. Such a one would fail to comprehend the full import of David the Psalmist’s statement, “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof.” Would it not stand to reason that since the earth is the Lord’s it would necessarily have to be God manifesting, revealing and unfolding not only as individual being but also as nature at its finest? Likewise, would it not stand to reason that only the spiritually minded would be blessed with eyes to see and ears to hear the advent of God on earth? Elizabeth Barrett Browning puts it exactly when she says, “Earth’s crammed with heaven, And every common bush afire with God.” All we need do is open our spiritual eyes and ears and feel the blessings that come. n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S
