GRATITUDE G THE HEALING INSPIRATION OF
by An n e Kaiser

NOVEMBER 2019
GRATITUDE: SIMPLY EXPLAINED, this word encapsulates the feeling of being thankful or grateful. But the experience and expression of this state of mind are as subtly nuanced as the individual act of offering thanks. In this season of giving thanks and celebrating Thanksgiving, our thoughts turn toward the integration of gratitude into daily being. That which inspires gratitude in us may be diverse, ranging from the simple to complex, from the humble to the grand, from the abstract to the tangible. Gratitude might stem from a vivid, sustaining memory, acceptance of a season of life, or material or spiritual gift. Gratitude might be borne of an enduring friendship, a long-sought-after job, or a yearned-for travel, achieved. In hardship, gratitude may emerge from a friend’s gentle hug or a homemade meal; for those lacking material resources, the kindness of a neighbor or the simple relief of securing a safe shelter might provide sustenance. And in times of bounty and joy, the birth of a child, a happy union, a new home or an overseas voyage all might delight and inspire a thankful spirit. Gratitude touches each of us at the different stages of our lives, bringing a sense of peace, harmony, and happiness to special moments or entire spans of days, weeks, months and years. Learning to live in a state of thankful wonder as an adult perpetuates the childhood joy many are fortunate to experience, whether as a staple of daily life or a precious nugget associated with special life events or holidays.

Gratitude
n n n
Starting in childhood, at the beginning of when most memories commonly arrive, we instinctively seek out all that brings us joy. Whether this means sharing time with a neighborhood best friend, traveling to a grandparent’s home at the holidays, or playing with a favorite doll or toy, our childhood selves gravitate toward a state of being marked by harmony, joy, and gratitude. As the practical demands of sustaining our adult lives require increasing amounts of our time and energy, we ideally still punctuate our days with those people, places and activities that bring joy. Though the balance between leisure time and work pursuits fluctuates through our adult lives, we continue to seek out activities that fulfill our hopes and dreams, and in doing so, fill our hearts and minds with gratitude. For those fortunate to have enjoyed childhoods woven of pleasant experiences, those early positive memories, and the feelings of thankfulness and wonder they might continue to inspire, fortify our adult selves for life’s inevitable periods of challenge. For many, the hope moving into elder years is
to continue to enjoy the benefits of good health and a comfortable, active lifestyle. When any of these are successfully achieved, a feeling of gratitude—profound wellbeing for all that has been and all that continues to be—envelopes mind and spirit. When individuals across the lifespan can connect in meaningful ways, sharing life wisdoms, humor and strength, a cycle of soul-sustaining nourishment and gratitude is enacted. At this season of Thanksgiving, we are each invited to delve deeply into our reservoirs of personal being, remembering and honoring all that we are thankful or grateful for, and sharing these gifts with others. At the Thanksgiving holiday, we are invited to step outside of our daily routines, to pause for reflection, celebration, feasting, re-connection with family and friends, and giving of thanks for life’s bounty. For many, Thanksgiving encompasses a traditional feast—or some variation or adaptation of the longstanding favorites of turkey, mashed or sweet potatoes, cranberry relish and more. On this coveted day of late-autumn leisure and celebration, many Americans take time to gather with relatives or friends around a bountiful table.

Conversation, laughter, music-making, games, sports, after-dinner strolls or midday naps—all might become staples of the harvest holiday as families reunite to give thanks and celebrate a season of gratitude. Thanksgiving is often also a season of giving to others or to the community as a whole. Time, talents, money or food items are gifted to organizations in the hopes that those less fortunate might experience a similar touch of bounty. And, moving toward Wisconsin’s coldest, darkest season, these gestures of giving might help to allow those who are facing life’s struggles to do so buoyed by the hope of additional sustaining moments of gratitude. Jillian Holy, Certified Yoga Instructor, recently shared her thoughts about cultivating gratitude in daily life. Exploring the practice of yoga can provide one avenue toward the expression of thanks, and its benefits touch multiple areas of the mind, body and spirit. Many of the tenets of a yoga practice can be helpful tools for anyone interested in adopting a whole-self approach to wellness, even when an active practice is not possible on a daily basis or for a variety of other reasons. “I do think cultivating gratitude in daily life goes

hand in hand with the yoga path,” Holy explained. “Just as in yoga, we are using body, breath and mind as tools to get out of overly identifying with our ‘I,’ ‘ego,’ small, finite, limited idea of self and (to) feel more connected to our divine, universal, infinite expansive self…” Cultivating such a sense of larger connection through the experience of gratitude or giving thanks brings multiple health benefits. “Feeling and expressing gratitude naturally shifts the energy in our body into a more expansive direction and can bring a greater feeling of openness through our emotional and physical heart. This can be a powerful shift and transformation, even releasing chemicals in our body that promote feelings of wellness, safety, security and connection.” Holy has broadened her approach to cultivating gratitude in recent years through keeping a gratitude journal, a practice she finds helpful. “It is a positive experience to reflect on my blessings, or jot down a beautiful experience I shared with my son, family, or out in nature.” Using writing to explore blessings as simple as the sighting of a beautiful butterfly or as complex
as a renewal of hope following the loss of a loved one can promote healing. Holy explained, “Just as a physical yoga practice can shift our mental or emotional perception and experience through moving the body, shifting the mind towards an attitude of gratitude can also change how one feels in their body and emotions. The repeated benefits of feeling gratitude are also good for the brain.” Finally, tending to a thankful spirit anchors us all to the gift of the present moment, fortifying and nourishing us for all that life offers. Holy summarized, “Feeling and expressing gratitude also takes us out of our individual self and recognizes something bigger, and powerful. Feeling gratitude is also a way to bring ourselves into the present, to nudge our mindset away from anxieties or thoughts of the past or fear of the unknown future, but to feel the now in the present, which is a present! It is miraculous to have a body, senses, and be alive!...Having gratitude for this miracle brings us even more into our joy and vitality, our own divine nature.” In the spirit of Thanksgiving and the cultivation of gratitude, enjoy exploring one of the following books. Recommendations are provided courtesy
of the librarians at the adult reference desk at the Whitefish Bay Public Library, located at 5420 N. Marlborough Drive in Whitefish Bay. Oliver Sacks’ book Gratitude provides a meditative collection of essays in which he contemplated the wonder and abundance of life in the face of his own coming passing. Janice Kaplan’s book The Gratitude Diaries: How a Year Looking on the Bright Side Can Transform Your Life documents a year the author explored living in gratitude utilizing advice from multiple professional, medical and spiritual sources to gain a new perspective that helped transform her life. Marala Scott’s book With Gratitude shares a selection of experiences that help readers discover the positive in life’s past and present challenges and honor the good in joyful situations. It illuminates the benefits of valuing relationships, love, loss, and gestures of kindness. Melody Beattie’s book Gratitude: Affirming the Good Things in Life offers suggestions for navigating difficult times. Beattie helps readers learn to offer thanks for each feeling and problem, and through the expression of gratitude, experience the richness of life. n

A KITCHEN SERVES as command-central of most homes, so it’s also one of the first rooms homeowners choose when it’s time to make upgrades. When approaching your kitchen remodel, it’s important to keep your family’s lifestyle at the forefront of your planning to create a space that fits the way you like to live. Get the most livable space and enjoyment out of a kitchen remodel with these tips from the experts at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry: Make purposeful changes. A desire to bring your kitchen’s style up to date is plenty of motivation for a renovation, but to get maximum benefit from your new space, spend time considering what functional improvements you can make, too. Do you need more cabinets for storage? Is there enough counter space for meal prep? Does the overall layout suit your family’s needs? you’ve found a few things you’d change given the chance to do it again. Consider physical space. If yours is a family that cooks together, or if guests tend to congregate in the kitchen when you’re entertaining, a renovation is the perfect time to make adjustments that accommodate more bodies in the kitchen. You might want more work zones for multiple cooks or an island or peninsula set away from the hightraffic zone for guests more interested in snacking and chatting than getting hands-on. Evaluate your shopping style. You may be in the habit of doing your grocery shopping to fit your available space. However, with a larger refrigerator and more pantry space, your shopping habits could change, allowing you to become a bulk shopper or at least increase the time between shopping trips.
Think into the future. A kitchen renovation can be a costly venture, so it’s a good idea to project years down the road as you consider your needs. Be realistic about mealtime. If your family’s activities have everyone eating at different times, you may benefit from a feature like a warming drawer that keeps dinner warm until each family member makes it home for a meal. Think about features that would make the table space more practical, such as task lighting so kids can tackle homework at the table or convenient access to power for laptops. Choose appliances with care. It’s easy to get carried away with all of the design elements that go into a kitchen renovation, but at the end of the day, remember the appliances are the true centerpiece of the space. Be sure to leave room in the budget to select the best appliances for your needs so you have all the functions, features and space to make using your new kitchen as enjoyable as possible. Think into the future. A kitchen renovation can be a costly venture, so it’s a good idea to project years down the road as you consider your needs. Are there features that would enhance the safety if a baby (that soon will become an inquisitive toddler) joins the family? Are there elderly family members may benefit from a lower or higher work station down the road? IN A FAST-PACED WORLD, we all want to find our own little corner of the world that brings renewal and allows us to be our best self. This beautiful Chenequa home, nestled on three glorious acres of Pine Lake shoreline, gives you an opportunity to take a deep breathe, exhale and take on the day. You are a short drive from Milwaukee, yet a world away and it is a rare and glorious world, indeed. As you drive up to the home, you will notice the clean lines of mid-century styling. A cedar-shake roof and rotunda room add charm and visual interest. Mature landscaping with sloping greens lawns and woods lead you to Pine Lake. Truly, you won’t just see the beauty on this property and residence. If you settle in and
look around, you will feel the beauty, too. Walls of floor to ceiling windows throughout the home help to transform indoor living spaces with the tranquility of nature. An abundance of natural wood features throughout the home add the kind of relaxed ambiance you find in a North Woods retreat. The result is an overwhelming, “Ahhhhhh.” The great room and kitchen provide a wonderful place to hang out. The vaulted ceiling gives the great room an unfettered, open and airy feel. The adjacent kitchen offers unique features of its own. Pine cabinetry throughout the kitchen provides a traditional element, yet the straight, vertical plank cabinet design echoes the styling of a more modern era.

Right next to the kitchen, casual dining and great room, there is a sunroom and once you walk in, you will never want to leave. You are enveloped in your surroundings with a heightened sense of beauty: A lush green lawn, spotted with trees, evergreens, and bright orange daylilies. And of course, a Pine Lake view. The sunroom is framed by floor to ceiling windows and topped with a high, vaulted ceiling that is paneled entirely in knotty pine. A sizable, brass chandelier hanging from the wood beamed ceiling lends a resort-like elegance, yet all the time you are home. The living room is striking in its own sense. Fulllength windows overlook a lovely backyard patio with a lake view and on the other side of the room you are treated to a view of the bucolic front yard. Knotty pine wall paneling on one end of the room reminds you of the authenticity of this lovely home. A quaint rotunda room in the front of the home may serve as a study, den or sitting room. The walls are, again, windows and the octagonal knotty pine ceiling is accented with a large, three tiered chandelier. There are no traditional walls in the first floor master bedroom. You are surrounded with
full-length windows, and two patio doors to the outside. The view is a remarkable canvas of nature: a manicured lawn and gardens, woods and Pine Lake. Three additional bedrooms and five full baths in the home give you plenty of room for family and guests. The finished lower level is a perfect a replica of a North Woods retreat. White says she will miss the people who have made their time in downtown Waukesha so memorable and successful. Downtown Waukesha has been a great place to do business. There were two other locations in West Allis in the past but they eventually consolidated to the one location in Waukesha although it was a different location originally. When hours and services advertised are hard to maintain to give the service desired, it is time to consider what is best. The shop needs to be available when you advertise you are available. That has become harder and harder to do. White owns the building the shop is in and plans are to sell it. It will be sad and hard for White to quit cold-turkey 51 years of warm, friendly customer interaction but with health changes and this past winter, the decision was made to close. Her customers will be missed by her and it is certain the customers will miss her. n

NOVEMBER 2019
LATE NOVEMBER AND EARLY DECEMBER mark the advent of another festive holiday season, with plenty of opportunities to shop and dine while enjoying all the beauty of the Milwaukee area. For individuals, couples and families looking for a unique and memorable blend of shopping, dining options, and celebratory winter-themed events, Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward offers a memorable holiday celebration, Christmas in the Ward. This year’s Christmas in the Ward is scheduled to take place Friday December 6, 2019, from 5:30-8:30 P.M. in Catalano Square, located at 138 N. Broadway, at the corner of Broadway and Menomonee Streets. Designed to be appealing and accessible to all ages, the event will feature the appearance of costumed characters and a visit from Santa. Now in its 31st year, Christmas in the Ward originally grew from a “need for a fun and friendly, warm and fuzzy family event,” according to Rebecca Sue Button, Historic
Third Ward Association’s Creative Programs Coordinator. “This is a wonderful family event. Santa visits are extremely popular,” Button said. She noted that the event and Santa visits are free, but donations are gratefully accepted and encouraged. Cookie sales onsite and all donations collected will benefit the Ronald McDonald House. In this season of light, celebration and song, all who attend will be treated to a choice selection of musical performances. Carolers will help spread holiday cheer, while a cappella groups share in the merriment. Or, visitors may pause to enjoy a performance by the well-loved Trinity Irish Dancers. For those seeking a romantic nod to holidays past, Christmas in the Ward offers horsedrawn carriage rides and roasted chestnuts. Button noted that Christmas in the Ward is a “neighborhood flagship event,” the “biggest event of the year” for Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward district. Last year’s event was projected

to have had between six and seven thousand people in attendance, a gift to this nationally registered historic district. Last year’s event saw the addition of a beer tent and cookie sales, and this year, Christmas in the Ward will feature all the unique treats of past years’ events, plus two large Nutcracker ice sculptures. In addition to enjoying all the winter wonder of Christmas in the Ward, visitors are encouraged to take advantage of a rich assortment of nearby shops, food venues, art galleries and studios.
Button recommended that visitors stop at the Milwaukee Public Market, “one of the most iconic,” or visit Broadway, Water, or Buffalo Streets, as all are “lined with boutiques and art galleries folks should definitely check out.” Refreshments are available onsite at Christmas in the Ward. In addition to roasted chestnuts, visitors might wish to warm up with delicious hot chocolate or coffee. Cocoa cocktails and samplings of local brews will warm an adult crowd. Dining cravings may also be satisfied by a visit to nearby restaurants. “I highly recommend any of the restaurants in the Ward,” Button

Visitors can anticipate a unique treat as a culmination of this special holiday kickoff event. “One of our biggest draws is our winter fireworks display over the river,” Button noted. WINTERS WITH HEAVY snowfall can be magnificent, but they can also be challenging for homeowners. Accumulated snow and ice have the potential to damage many aspects of your home and property, including exterior components of your propane system. “Propane is one of the safest and most reliable sources of energy in winter,” said Tucker Perkins, president and CEO of the Propane Education Research Council (PERC). “It keeps your home warm and allows you to cook and have hot water. A propane generator ensures that you have reliable power in any weather.” While you can’t predict the first snowstorm or hazardous weather

conditions, you can put your family in the best position for safety and warmth by planning ahead. Be Prepared n Get to know your propane system. If you are not familiar with your propane system, take a few minutes to review it. Identify core components, including the tank, regulators, meter, piping and supply valves, as well as any appliance vents. Be sure you know where your main gas supply
valve is located in case you need to close it in the event of an emergency; in many cases it may be located on your propane tank. n Mark your tank and regulator. Use a brightly colored stake or flag taller than the maximum anticipated snow depth as a marker to enable emergency and propane service personnel to locate your tank. Also mark your secondary pressure regulator or meter, which is usually near the side of your home. Check local ordinances about

marking tanks and regulators and follow any rules applicable to your area. n Have an adequate supply of propane. Roads leading to your home might not be accessible for delivery, particularly after a snowstorm. Establish a regular delivery schedule with your propane retailer or call to schedule a delivery when the percentage gauge reads 30% to give the retailer enough time to make a delivery and ensure you have an adequate supply of propane. n Talk to your contractors. If you use a snow removal service, make sure the service knows the location of all propane equipment on the property. Instruct them to keep their equipment clear of all parts of your propane system, especially tanks, regulators and gas meters. If they shovel snow off your roof, instruct them to never shovel snow onto any part of the propane system and not to block any appliance air intakes or exhaust vents. It may be helpful to designate an area to pile snow safely away from any equipment. Take Action n Keep snow and ice from accumulating on propane equipment. Snow or ice accumulation can potentially cause parts of your propane system to crack or break, resulting in a gas leak. Gently brush away snow or ice that has accumulated around the tank, meter, regulator and any other piping by hand or using a broom. If you must use a shovel, use extreme caution. If you notice any snow or ice buildup that cannot be removed easily, contact your propane retailer. Do not attempt to remove snow or ice by kicking or hitting equipment. n Be alert to snow buildup. Frequently check areas where snow or ice collect on your roof, structures or nearby trees and clear it if you believe it might fall on any part of your propane system. Heavy accumulations of snow or ice falling on tanks, regulators, meters, piping or valves may cause damage that could result in a gas leak. In high snowfall areas, drifting snow and ice sliding off roofs may require additional regulator and vent protection. If you think this may be an issue, contact your propane supplier for guidance on protection of these components. n Keep vents clear. Appliance air intake and exhaust vents and chimney flues must always be clear of snow or ice. Some homes may have E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S
direct vents, which are close to the ground. Improper venting can cause carbon monoxide buildup in your home, which could lead to serious illness or even death. n Clear driveways and pathways to propane tanks. Remember that a propane delivery truck needs at least a 10-foot-wide path to be able to deliver fuel to your home. Keep the tank area and a path to the tank free of snow. When plowing, snow-blowing or shoveling, do not push or pile snow around your tank, meter, regulator or piping. For more safety tips and information, visit Propane.com. Stay Alert for Safety As you look for ways to keep your family warm and comfortable, it’s important to keep safety at the top of your list. These tips from PERC can help keep you and your family safe during cold weather. n Never use a gas oven or range to heat your home. n Never use portable gas-powered heaters indoors unless they’re designed and approved for indoor use. n Never use an outdoor barbecue grill indoors for cooking or heating, and never use a generator in a garage or other enclosed area. n Keep chimneys, flues and appliance air intake and exhaust vents free of snow, ice and other debris. n Consider installing a UL-listed carbon monoxide detector on every level of your home. If you smell gas: 1. Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones or cell phones. Flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or fire. 2. Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect gas is leaking. 3. Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise). 4. From a neighbor’s home or other nearby building away from the gas leak, call your propane retailer. If you can’t reach your propane retailer, call 911 or your local fire department. 5. Do not return to the building or area until your propane retailer or emergency personnel determine it is safe to do so. 6. Before you attempt to resume use of your propane appliances, have your propane retailer or a qualified service technician check your system to ensure it is leak-free. n NOVEMBER 2019

Easy & Stylish DECORATING A wall-mount door makes more room for fun n n n
NOVEMBER 2019
NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME to make space-saving upgrades to your house. For example, consider swapping out a traditional swinging door for a smooth-gliding, wall-mounted sliding door. A sliding door can add up to 14 square feet of floor space, which allows for more room to spread out toys and games, and give a more spacious feel to nearly any room. They also allow for more flexibility in furniture arrangements, which can turn even the smallest nook in your house into a cozy space. It's easy to do with an option like Johnson Hardware's Soft-Close Wall-Mount Sliding Door Hardware, which can be used with virtually any metal or wood door from 1-inch to 1 3/4-inches thick, up to 48 inches wide and weighing up to 200 pounds. The U.S.-made hardware gently slows the door's travel speed to softly pull it into the fully open or fully closed
position and works like a cabinet door closer, enabling doors to open and close quietly and securely. It also prevents door slamming and pinched fingers, as well as reducing door operational noise. The built-in satin or bronze finish fascia can give a warm decorative detail to a room while the smooth-rolling door hardware and track exceed ANSI standards, meaning it can successfully complete 100,000 opening and closing cycles, with adjustable door guides, tricycle hangers and adjustable track stops. The jump-proof aluminum box track is available in lengths up to 96 inches for single doors and up to 192 inches for double doors. Installing wall-mount sliding door hardware in a playroom, or nearly any other room in your house, can be an easy yet high-impact improvement that reduces space constraints while adding warmth, functionality and visual appeal. n

NOVEMBER IS A WONDERFUL MONTH for Americans: we have so much for which to give thanks. No pseudothanks, mouthed phrases that carry nothing but lip service merely because a national day of Thanksgiving demands that everyone give thanks if he would follow the trend. Heartfelt thanks, warm vital joyous gratitude that in spite of everything that raucously, consistently shouts trouble, confusion, dissension, hatred, animosity, frustration throughout the entire world, in spite of anything to the contrary, we are Americans. When warring politicians would tear down our defenses and confuse our normal reasoning with their exchange of founded or unfounded condemnations, when foreign powers would seek subversively to destroy us from within, when ignorance and apathy and selfishness would seem to be smothering the initiative and independence which have been an integral part of our heritage, we can still give thanks: we are Americans. This is no idle shouting from the housetops. This is no jingo patriotism. This is firm conviction that to be an American is to possess the qualities of kindly assimilation of the foreigners who seek refuge with us, of brusque forthrightness in our dealings with nations that would tend to deceive, of staunch independence against the invasion of our rights, and of earnest confidence that we are one nation, indivisible, under God, believing in freedom and justice for all. He of the raised eyebrow queries: freedom and justice for all? What about the problems of discrimination, bombings, hate, resentment! The answer is simple even though the problems are tragic. Because as Americans we believe innately in freedom and justice for all, as a nation we are struggling to resolve these problems as decently and humanely as is possible. We are a nation under God. Fast within the heart of each American is an awareness of that fact, an awareness of a great spiritual force within us individually and collectively that we put to work in every situation in which we find ourselves, that we seek honestly in every human being we meet. November is a wonderful month for Americans. We have so much for which to give thanks. n
