Habitat for Humanity’s
MIDTOWN 100 CAMPAIGN by An n e Kaiser
n n n
OCTOBER 2019
AS WISCONSIN ENTERS its cooler autumn season, thoughts for many turn to cozy moments spent at home. Whether time at home is spent relaxing beside a fireplace, cooking a favorite meal, or curled beneath a soft blanket to read following a busy workday, time at home carries special significance for all who are fortunate to enjoy a safe and comfortable dwelling. But what about those who have been less fortunate, who must face ever-rising rent costs or for whom home repairs are unaffordable? Fortunately, Milwaukee is home to a dynamic and forward-thinking chapter-based nonprofit organization, Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity. With a main office located at 3726 North Booth Street in Milwaukee, Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity reaches deep into
Milwaukee neighborhoods in need of safe and affordable housing. Aiming to combat that housing dilemma, Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity is currently in the heart of its Midtown 100 campaign. Beginning in 2018, the Midtown 100 campaign, or Midtown 100, is the largest project undertaken by Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity to date. Midtown 100 aims to build, rehabilitate, and repair 100 homes in Milwaukee’s Midtown neighborhood in the span of three years. According to Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity’s Director of Marketing and Communications Jake Brandt, the campaign “really stemmed from a need in the community.” Brandt explained that “sixty percent of Milwaukee renters live in unaffordable housing,” with many “paying more than half their income to rent.”
9
Midtown 100
n n n
Midtown 100 is designed to help work toward a solution to the housing crisis faced by many of Milwaukee’s city residents. The campaign is focused on the Midtown neighborhood located on Milwaukee’s near west side, bordered by North 30th and North 20th Streets on the east and west, and North Avenue and Lisbon on the north and south. According to Brandt, “That project…will create the highest concentration of affordable single family homes built in Milwaukee since World War II.” Prior to its work in the Midtown neighborhood, Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity focused work in Milwaukee’s Washington Park neighborhood. Following the Midtown 100, efforts will focus on the Harambee neighborhood. Clustering efforts in specific neighborhoods creates a positive impact on both families and the neighborhoods as a whole. However, once a particular neighborhood has been visited, efforts are not isolated to the construction periods only; Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity continues to offer support to neighborhoods in which they have previously
worked. And benefits are lasting; the Washington Park neighborhood blocks where work had been focused has since seen a 46 percent decrease in crime. Families who qualify to receive services from the Milwaukee chapter of Habitat for Humanity benefit on many levels. All are first-time homeowners, and in addition to receiving affordable mortgages, these families participate in working on the homes in which they will live, putting in 300 hours of “sweat equity,” according to Brandt. In addition, they are provided with financial education and home maintenance courses. Brandt noted that the aim of this educational underpinning helps “set homeowners up to be successful.” Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity also offers a repair program for those in their focus neighborhoods. For homeowners who experience serious electrical, plumbing, or leaks in their home that they are unable to afford to fix, Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity steps in. They will send in a team to evaluate the needs on the property, and then bring in a team of contractors or subcontractors and volunteers to help complete the necessary repairs. According
to Brandt, “It’s really about building community from a block-by-block approach to not only serve our families, but to build safe, stable communities where our families are living.” Children of Habitat for Humanity homeowners also benefit from the stability of living in a safe, stable home. According to a survey of Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity homeowners completed two years ago, children living in households with stable homeowners achieved an 87 percent high school graduation rate. By comparison, this rate is 30 percent higher than the average graduation rate of their MPS peers. This study helped demonstrate the correlation between housing stability and educational outcomes. Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity receives funding from a wide variety of sources, including corporate sponsors and individual donors. Along with this vital and generous support, Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity operates three ReStores in the Milwaukee area. These ReStores, located in Walkers Point at 420 South 1st Street, in Wauwatosa at 3015 North 114th Street, and in Greenfield at 4150 South 108th Street, provide the single largest source of funding for Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity.

ReStores began in Milwaukee 12 years ago, and, according to Brandt, have “really been a sustainable fundraising source.” Last year alone, ReStores sold over 2.5 million dollars of donated products, including a wide array of appliances, furniture, and cabinetry. All of the proceeds from the sale of these items went directly toward Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity’s work constructing affordable and safe homes. As an added vital benefit of Milwaukee’s ReStores, over 6 million pounds of still-usable materials are diverted from landfills annually, and move instead into other homes. “We can give those items a second life,” Brandt explained. Brandt noted that Habitat for Humanity’s “deconstruction services team” works to gather many of these still-usable materials and items. Alongside those items donated directly by homeowners, the majority of the items gathered by the team are from residential spaces, though items have also come from larger venues such as the Bradley Center. The deconstruction services team works with homeowners and contractors to “make sure those items get a second life,” Brandt emphasized. Volunteers help ensure the smooth running of operations at the three Milwaukee ReStore locations. Volunteering may be arranged on a flexible basis, with shifts available Monday through Saturday. A diverse array of volunteer opportunities ensures that everyone interested in giving their time and effort will find an appropriate match for their skills. Volunteers enjoy helping with deconstruction projects, decorating the store sites, picking up donations, cashiering, and processing donations. Volunteers also help onsite with homebuilding and repair efforts. Last year, Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity gratefully accepted the assistance of over 2,800 volunteers working in the offices, ReStores, and at the home-building sites. Access to safe, stable and affordable homes helps people in profound ways and on multiple levels, with demonstrated positive impacts on health, education, and finances. Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with the families and communities it serves to bring these benefits to the many who have faced housing crises. As Brandt summarized, “We really see affordable housing as an opportunity for families to build strength, stability and independence.” n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

On Saturdays and Sundays until October 26, The Elegant Farmer hosts its annual Autumn Harvest Fest from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Children will enjoy pony rides, while all ages will enjoy the fun challenge of navigating a “family-friendly” corn maze, complete with easy routes in and out. Or, visitors may choose to sit back and take in the fall colors on a leisurely tractor-drawn hayride. The Elegant Farmer also allows visitors to venture back in time, with special rides aboard a train harking back to the start of the 1900s. Riders can choose the departure time that best fits their schedule, leaving The Elegant Farmer Depot at 11:00 a.m., noon, 1:00 or 2:00 p.m. In addition to partaking of the cornucopia of outdoor fall activities unique to this colorful Wisconsin harvest season, visitors to The Elegant Farmer won’t want to miss savoring delicious edible treats. The “Smilin’ Barn Café” located onsite serves long-time favorites such as hot dogs and barbecue pulled pork sandwiches, comfort foods like chicken pot pie and homemade chili, and sweet treats such as fresh apple cider and slices of pie. At the Farm Kitchen Bakery, Deli and Market, additional specialties like Cider-Baked Ham, fruits and vegetables in season, special fruit apple sauces, a selection of Blue Ribbon cheeses, and giant muffins and cookies may be purchased. The Elegant Farmer’s award-winning “Apple Pie Baked in a Paper Bag” is available for purchase as well, a treat not to be missed. Co-owner Keith Schmidt noted that The Elegant Farmer uses “only fresh apples, never frozen,” in baking these noteworthy pies. Ida Red apples are preferred, as “they hold up during the baking process—they have a little bit of crunch when baked,” according to Schmidt. In addition to the flavor and crunch imparted by these apples, Schmidt said that the “sugary, crunchy top crust” of the pies have made them “special.” These unique dessert pies are baked in a paper bag, which helps to steam the apples during the first phase of baking, according to Schmidt. During the final phase of baking, a hole is cut in the top of the paper bag, allowing the pies to lightly brown. Schmidt noted that the “Apple Pie Baked in a Paper Bag” is the overall favorite sweet treat of The Elegant Farmer customers. Caramel apples are also a favorite, and visitors can make their own on Saturdays and Sundays. E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

ONE OF THE HIDDEN GEMS of Lake Country, Ashippun Lake, sets the scene for this beautiful ranch home in exclusive Saddlebrook Farms. With 4.67 acres and 206 feet of serene swimming frontage and a long, park-like setback from Saddlebrook Lane, this stately brick home combines premium materials and construction with a comfortable sense of “home.” The abundance of windows and even skylights, with soaring ceiling heights, not only creates a bright, airy feel that welcomes friends and family alike and the flowing floorplan in the main rooms and even the low-maintenance lakeside deck, provides a nearly ideal space for entertaining. That space continues to the
lower level, featuring a full walk-out, with bath and family, gaming and exercise areas. The freshly-carpeted living room welcomes the southern sun with a large, arch-transomed picture window and skylights while the marble and wood surrounded fireplace keeps the space cozy when the weather gets chilly. The wide-board wood-floored family room with a handsomely rustic fireplace, skylights, tall ceilings and sprawling patio doors offers a welcoming gathering space just off the kitchen and with some of the best views of the lake. The kitchen, with ample space for seating at the island and dining area is open to the family room and features

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN you mix sophistication and elegance with a feeling of “home”? You get this beautiful residence overlooking Oconomowoc Lake. It’s design and amenities lend to a distinct lifestyle centered around shared experiences with those you love most. This 10,000-square-foot beauty features a kitchen to end all kitchens, an indoor pool and is perched on a tranquil piece of property on the North End of Oconomowoc Lake. As soon as you walk through the front door the elegance of the foyer, with its polished marble floors and gorgeous crystal chandelier, sets the stage. island in the middle of the room has a natural cherry wood counter top with designed wood inlays. Shined to bring out the natural variation of the wood grain, the island is a focal piece of artwork itself. Earth toned countertops and imported tile that frames the “oven nook” add a refined sense of comfort and abundance. Top grade appliances bring exceptional function to form. A second, informal breakfast nook, and nearby dining room give you an abundance of places to break bread with family and guests. On the other side of the great room, you will find an indoor pool with a Jacuzzi. Floor to ceiling windows bring the outside “inside” and during warm, summer months, you can open the oversized patio doors to the elevated deck along the back of the home. If you fancy a private swim first thing in the morning, French doors from the first floor master bedroom open to the pool, as well. The spacious master bedroom feels comfortable and cozy as the vaulted ceiling is paneled with a glorious display of coffered, white, woodwork. The luxurious en suite master bathroom provides respite. End a long day relaxing in the jetted spa tub or oversized shower. There is more family-living space on the second floor. A loft landing is large enough to be considered an extra room for watching television, playing cards or doing your homework. Accented with a Juliet balcony overlooking the foyer, there is a capacious sense of space. Kids and guests will enjoy their own privacy on the second floor, where there are three more bedrooms and two full bathrooms. The exposed lower level provides more opportunity to connect. Watch a movie in the lower level family room by the glow of the fireplace. Exercise in taste, with a lake view and additional fireplace. A ground level deck gives you access to the backyard and the reason you came here in the first place: Oconomowoc Lake. Known for its rich history, Oconomowoc Lake became the summertime destination for wealthy families in the early 1900s, after railroads connected the area to the rest of the world. Its natural wonders are preserved in time. Fish for Northern Pike, Bass and Walleye. Swim in crystal clear waters. Live in the elegance and warmth of a mansion by definition, yet in every sense a true home where you can make a lifetime of memories.

WELCOME TO THE SEASON of beautiful color inside and out. This season allows us to layer with bold colors and textures. As the crisp air sets in, and leaves fall, we are able to bring out our wool, flannel and goose down textiles from the front door to the back porch. GOD’S CORNER by Ger trude M. Puelicher n n n

DO YOU LONG to be lifted out of the tension and pressure of today’s fast pace? Do you long for a solitude that will permit you to catch your breath? That will give you time even to indulge in so deep a breath that gradually a slow flooding of peace throughout your being will release itself? “October’s bright blue weather” is a beckoning finger if you have the courage to follow it northward to a lake whose pine-shadowed shore is ruffled with intimate little bays. Motorboats roaring importantly all summer long from one fishing bar to another have long since been silenced. Young water skiers flirting impudently with speed and sudden spills have disappeared into their classrooms. If you will settle into a chair, any kind of lounge chair placed on the pier, and let your thinking go where it wants to go, you will find yourself seeing and hearing strangely comfortable things. At your left, water bugs darting in half a dozen directions at once overlap each other in their silly, jerky, jettisoning, as though their world was as important as the one from which you had just fled. At your right, a fish splashed and is gone, silently disappearing in ever widening circles, the only evidence of its brief presence. There is something effortlessly soothing in watching
circles in the water smooth themselves out of existence. Even the loon, laughing crazily at his own antics, fails to disturb you. Settled low in your chair, you have by now lost all sense of earth-bound limitation. The naturalness spread out before you has made you a part of itself. No longer are you boxed in by the pettinesses, frictions, turmoils, unconscious resentments and exacting demands of daily living. No longer are you pushing buttons to meet deadlines. No longer is the heavy breathing of a seemingly important schedule pressing against your eardrums. You are quiet now, quiet and at peace throughout your whole being. All you hear is the silence of the approaching night. Startlingly clear comes the thought, illumined in the beginning twilight: When God answered sorely-pressed Elijah, God wasn’t in the whirlwind, nor in the earthquake, nor in the fire any more than He is in the pressures and tensions and frustrations of our human existence. God was in the “still small voice” to which Elijah listened, the voice within each of us if we will but take time to listen. And then comes the revelation that really rests you—your mind has become a closed circuit to everything but God. n
