The Rawhide Boys Ranch
RESTORING
HOPE & WELLBEING by An n e Kaiser
n n n
SEPTEMBER 2019
IN 1965, a simple phone call and a shared dream led to a partnership that has fueled the dreams and helped restore the hope and wellbeing of hundreds of boys, young men and their families. Rawhide Boys Ranch, the outcome of the partnership between founders John and Jan Gillespie and Bart and Cherry Starr, continues to thrive today, thanks to the power of that shared vision. Rawhide Boys Ranch, located at E7475 Rawhide Road in New London, Wisconsin, along the picturesque Wolf River, offers 714 acres of healing and restoration and a facility that provides a well-rounded array of services to help troubled youth and their families. In 1960, John and Jan Gillespie, cofounders of Rawhide Boys Ranch and coauthors of the book Our 351 Sons: Helping Youth Grow by Learning to Serve Others, experienced a lifechanging event. In the words of John Gillespie, “Life for my wife Jan and I was going along just fine. We had a great business I had started right out of college; a first son that just turned three; a small home in the country. But that totally
changed when we invited Jerry, a 13-year old we had just met, to spend the day with us. Little did we know his new stepfather wanted him out of the house, immediately. He stayed with us almost two years…and the rest of our lives would never be the same again.” According to Rawhide President and CEO Alan Loux, Rawhide grew from “John’s dream of having more boys and creating a home and creating an environment for kids to learn lots of different things.” John Gillespie recalls the events that lead to the acquisition of the Rawhide property: “With a second son on the way, and with Jerry now part of the family, our small rented farmhouse was way too small. We asked God to lead us to something we could afford to rent. Purchasing was out of the question. My business was designing subdivisions and a homeowner wanted to hire me to help him sell his property. He had 500 acres on the banks of the Wolf River in central Wisconsin, and as he took Jan and I on a tour of the home…I made the comment, ‘Wow! This would make a great home for

teenage boys struggling with life.’ He got excited and a few months later with no money down we had moved in and started a program we named Rawhide. The home…Oh yes, it was ideal. 27 rooms: 11 bedrooms, 5½ bathrooms, and a quarter mile of river frontage.” However, as the early plans for the new facility moved forward, the Gillespies realized they would need additional support to help solidify the creation of Rawhide. Deciding to take a chance, they placed a call to Bart Starr, who at the time
was listed in the phone book. Bart answered; he and his wife Cherry agreed to meet the Gillespies that afternoon. The two couples shared dinner, and along with the meal, learned that they shared a similar dream: to help teen boys who needed additional support and resources to succeed. Bart and Cherry Starr agreed to help fund Rawhide, and over the years offered countless intangible gifts of time and character as well. Many are familiar with Bart Starr’s role as the well-loved and respected NFL Hall of Fame Green Bay Packers quarterback. He helped lead the Packers to Super Bowl championships as MVP

in the 1960s; for Super Bowl II, he was awarded a Corvette along with his MVP honor. When Starr learned of the Gillespies’ need for additional monetary support to realize the creation of their dream, Rawhide Boys Ranch, Starr decided to raffle off his new Corvette to raise the needed funds. With special permission, he sold 40,000 tickets in Green Bay for one dollar apiece over the course of only three days. The money raised— ten times the price of a new Corvette, in those days—completed the down payment money for purchase of the Rawhide Boys Ranch property. Bart Starr additionally helped bring attention to Rawhide’s vehicle donation program, which would secure a major source of ongoing funding for Rawhide Boys Ranch. John Gillespie described the “very first TV spot in the nation of a charity asking for donated cars. It is Bart in a medicine cabinet, and the 60-second spot running once a day on three Green Bay stations produced a car donation a day. In two months we were getting three cars a day....and it has increased way beyond that. Charities around the country now do this. It continues to provide almost one-third of Rawhide’s annual operating financial needs.” John Gillespie’s 2018 book, Our 351 Sons: Helping Youth Grow by Learning to Serve Others, honors the partnership he and his late wife Jan shared with the Starrs over the years: “Our 351 Sons shares about a dozen amazing stories about how Bart and Cherry Starr’s willingness to partner with Jan and me in the second year of Rawhide was definitely an answer to prayer. We were struggling with not having the name recognition to raise the funds needed to secure the future of the program.” The book includes a Foreword by Bart and Cherry Starr. Books may be ordered by visiting the website www.Our351Sons.com, and ship the same day from Amazon. In the first year of print, this book, with its inspiring story, has sold over 5,000 copies. Over the years since Rawhide’s inception, Bart and Cherry Starr gave generously of their funds, time, and support. “The Starrs were not just involved in Ranch promotion, but spent many hours encouraging and doing things with the boys,” John Gillespie said. “They really viewed this as their life’s work,” Loux noted. They attended fundraising events at Rawhide and spent time visiting with the boys there. Loux emphasized the many ways that Bart, Cherry, and their son Bart Jr. positively impacted and helped facilitate the success of Rawhide. “They’ve given of themselves, as much as the money,” Loux said. He described Bart Starr as a man who “was a humble guy who’d E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

greet anybody, talk to anybody, make time for anybody.” When the Starrs tragically lost their son Brett to an overdose at age 24, they decided to speak publically about the impact of their loss and grief. This tragedy “deepened [their] engagement in serving youth,” Loux explained. John Gillespie recalls the early history of Rawhide Boys Ranch: “Over the next 35 years we had 10 teenage boys placed with us at a time by Wisconsin juvenile courts. They stayed an average of a year each and totaled 351 foster sons, plus we raised our own two boys.” John and Jan Gillespie’s sons benefited from growing up at Rawhide alongside the boys in the program. “Our two sons were three years old and a second grader when we moved to Rawhide. Both went through the period where they were little brothers, peers, and then big brothers to the foster youth…They look back on growing up at the Ranch with fond memories,” John Gillespie said. John Gillespie and his late wife Jan shared their own special qualities with the troubled youth who came to live at Rawhide. John Gillespie notes his late wife’s unique ability to see the positive qualities of
each young boy: “Jan, my amazing wife of 60 years, related instantly to every boy placed with us. Many arrived in a police car in handcuffs. She mentioned many times she loved every one of them even before the handcuffs were taken off. As a teenager herself she was always living on the edge but knew every one of them were valuable in God’s eyes. A plaque inside one of her cupboard doors said, Those that deserve Love Least – Need it the most.” Today, Rawhide Boys Ranch continues to grow and flourish, offering residential treatment services, therapies and outpatient treatment services, a private accredited middle and high school (Starr Academy) on-site, opportunities for volunteering, job training programs, and services to help youth re-integrate into the community following treatment. “We have a full-service program for the youth,” Loux explained. At Starr Academy, the private school on-site, boys can work toward a full diploma. Named in honor of the Starr family’s support of and service to Rawhide, the school employs seventeen instructors who teach the youth core academics, STEM curriculum, electives and industrial arts. Some youth participate on the school’s sports teams as well. Each student has
an individual education plan, or IEP, which helps teachers, counselors and therapists to monitor and customize students’ growth and progress. According to Loux, teachers at Starr Academy are “dedicated beyond belief;” they “know how to teach those that are at risk;” these teachers “have a heart for the kids” and “know how to teach kids with behavior issues or mental illness.” From the original single home on the property, Rawhide now offers five. “We have an environment…that looks and feels like a home environment,” Loux explained. Eight boys live in each home facility on-site during their residential treatment. Each home has a house mother and father as well as resident youth care workers who live on-site, giving the boys in treatment a comfortable, nurturing and supportive environment. Having house parents on-site is “one of the core differences Rawhide has,” and it proves beneficial to the youth in treatment, as “many…don’t come from stable home environments,” according to Loux. Boys in Rawhide’s residential program generally live on-site for four to six months. Around 100-110 boys are helped through this program annually. Rawhide also operates counseling programs in

schools throughout Wisconsin, and overall, a total of about 500 youths and their families are helped through Rawhide services annually. Rawhide works with young men ages 11-18 in a community-service-based residential treatment program designed to foster positive behavioral change. This “About Face Service Corps” program lasts for either 90 or 120 days, and helps youth build positive character traits such as integrity, honor, courage, and self-discipline through regular work on community service projects. Young men in the program have access to a community church and daily meditation and study. They may attend Starr Academy, and also may receive weekly Occupational Therapy services as needed. In addition, Rawhide offers a special CHAPS EquineAssisted Services, which uses horse-based therapy and psychotherapy to facilitate healing from trauma. Rawhide’s positive benefits on the lives of the youths and families it serves is reflected in its success rate of around eighty-five percent. The combination of services offered means that “the majority [of youth served] will go back” to their communities, according to Loux. “We measure success by when they go back to their communities and families and don’t have to return to residential facilities,” Loux explained. One of Rawhide’s goals for the young men, in Loux’s words, is to “help equip them so they can be successful going back to families and communities.” Moving forward, Rawhide hopes to continue to branch out further into communities to help reach more youth in Wisconsin. According to Loux, this goal includes services provided through “counseling clinics, work in schools, [and] helping [youth] get jobs…” Happily, Rawhide’s positive impact on the lives of the boys it serves creates a ripple effect on the lives of many. John Gillespie is proud to be witness to the ongoing ways that Rawhide has helped change the lives of so many youth in need of additional help. He commented, “I still have contact with over a hundred of those boys who are now fathers and grandfathers, and all are doing well. Eighty-five percent of the thousands that have gone through the various Rawhide Youth Programs have not had any legal problems.” Gillespie further noted the profound impact that Bart and Cherry Starr had on Rawhide’s success: “Alumni that lived with Jan and me even today mention how the love and encouragement of both Bart and Cherry made a huge impact on their lives.” n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

DESPITE THE COMFORT and convenience it affords, modern society is contributing to a vanishing relationship with the natural environment. However, there are plenty of ways to bring nature indoors to reap the benefits of an earthy connection inside your home. According to a survey commissioned by the Velux Group, a gap is growing between the time Americans spend outdoors and the time they’d like to spend in nature. In the United States, 63% of survey participants said they average one hour or less a week in nature, but 88% agreed they would like to spend more time. In addition, the majority of respondents said they believe nature, daylight and fresh air have a positive impact on stress levels, and most also agreed those factors have a positive impact on mental well-being. “Exposure to nature such as trees, plants and views of open spaces has been found to improve the cognitive ability to focus and read social cues,” said Arie Greenleaf,

professor of counseling at Seattle University. “Even ADHD symptoms in children are mitigated by views of and interactions with nature in a host of different ways. Worker productivity, how people feel about the work they do and the level of engagement, improves with a view of nature.” Despite ample research demonstrating the benefits, the study revealed a common theme, with 85% of participants believing they spent more time in nature as children than children do today. That’s a trend that translates into adult habits, too.
“One thing we can do is improve how our homes connect to nature–from houseplants and nature-inspired art to skylights and screened porches.” “With work and family responsibilities, we can’t always fit spending time outside into our busy schedules, effectively making us the indoor generation,” said Peter Foldbjerg, head of Daylight, Energy and Indoor Climate for The Velux Group. “One thing we can do is improve how our homes connect to nature: From houseplants and natureinspired art to skylights and screened porches, there are a wide variety of options for creating nature connections in the place we spend most of our time our homes.” Learn how to bring more nature into your home with these decorating and design ideas: Houseplants Living plants not only add a touch of the outdoors, but they also help clean the air inside your home. In smaller spaces, even a few pots of herbs can add a refreshing touch of nature. If flat surfaces and floor space are at a premium, get creative with your wall space and incorporate shelving and wall-mounted planters. Sunshine and fresh air Whether it’s from windows or skylights, bringing natural light and fresh air inside can keep your space fresh and inviting. There are scientifically proven correlations between natural light exposure and mood, as well as your body’s ability to maintain its circadian rhythm. Refreshing the air in your home can help eliminate volatile organic compounds, pet dander and microparticles from cooking and cleaning. If your home is lacking in natural light, a skylight may be easier to add than a window, and skylights bring in twice as much light as vertical windows; their angle allows more of the sun’s rays E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

THE WORD “SUPPORT” has many connotations. One supports an organization in which one believes by backing its activities. A father supports his family in that he works for a financial return to provide for his wife and children. An American supports his country because the fatherland feeling is strong in defense of one’s homeland. A dedicated Christian mother left the comfort of her own home to spend many months in the home of a member of her family who needed her spiritual support. Her knowledge of God and her constant silent acknowledgement of His presence and power constituted a necessary bulwark in a precarious situation. What she really did was to pit her spiritual strength against the materialism of a universal concept until harmony was realized. This was accomplished without an attempt to remedy a situation humanly. It was truly a spiritual support, silently administered. Is it not spiritual support that our country needs today? Is it not spiritual support that the American home, backbone of the nation, is lacking? As their moral standards plunged lower and lower into the dust of materialism and licentiousness, the great civilizations of Greece and Rome plunged with them, never again to regain their power. Should we not learn from history? Abraham Lincoln believed in government of, by, and for the people. Theoretically, this is an ideal situation, but if the people have permitted their moral standards to deteriorate, if law and order have become a matter of rationalization rather than a code of ethics, if decency of behavior has become the tool of sordid manipulation, then the people are no longer capable of, or worthy of, functioning in government. That is the moment when the democracy of a Socrates deteriorates into a dictatorship. That is the moment when the people become a riotous rabble and the government, a tyrant. How then does one gain the capacity to give spiritual support? Only as one acknowledges God as the one Power and the one Presence. A significant Bible verse reads, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” The key words are “in all thy ways.” God, the life, the strength, the intelligence, the wisdom of each of us! God, who guides, protects, directs us if we turn to Him “in faith, nothing wavering.” If we would develop spiritual power we must bolster ourselves with daily study of spiritual writings. Let us study the Eleventh Chapter of Hebrews where one example follows another of what faith accomplished. Ultimately spiritual power melds into spiritual insight, and then we are in a position to give spiritual support whenever the need arises because we are rooted and grounded in a consciousness of God and that we live and move and have our being in Him. Then can we experience the truth of Isaiah’s words: “—in quiet and in confidence shall be your strength.” Then will harmony prevail. n
