DOOR COUNTY Wisconsin’s Cherished Four Season Venue

n n n

WITH ITS RICH NATURAL beauty and cultural and historical attractions, Door County offers Wisconsin residents a cherished vacation venue close to home. While some vacations perfectly fill the need for spa-like relaxation, resort pampering, and fine dining, other seasons in life call for an exploration of the hidden canvas behind this luxurious picture. Door County has long been a popular Wisconsin vacation spot, with many visitors arriving annually to enjoy the peninsula’s offerings during the much anticipated May through October peak tourism season. Many of the vacationers to the area are themselves from the Midwest, especially from within Wisconsin, the greater Chicago area of Illinois, and Minnesota’s Twin Cities. Door County is named for the area of water at the peninsula’s tip where Lake Michigan and Green Bay waters turbulently meet, called Death’s Door. While the area was

“founded” in 1851, people have long inhabited this rich and scenic land. The first Paleo-Indian peoples settled the peninsula region over 12,000 years ago, and through time, the Native American groups in the area included the Menomonee, Potawatomi, Ojibwe, Ho-Chunk, Ottawa, Sauk, Huron and Tionontati (called Petun by the French). These groups enjoyed food sustenance from the area’s rich base of fish, deer, water birds, and shellfish, and also gathered nuts, berries, edible plants, and wild rice. As the people moved toward cultivating plants, crops such as corn, beans, and squash were eaten as well. Door County’s exquisite and varied landscape, with rocky shorelines and sandy beaches and dunes, evergreen and deciduous forests, farms, orchards and vineyards, creates a shifting palette of colors, textures, sights and sounds enjoyable to nature enthusiasts and casual observers alike. Throughout Wisconsin’s

history of the area. Much of Door County’s beautiful land remains in its undeveloped state, with over 23,000 acres of land available for public exploration and enjoyment, some of it also enjoying preserved status. In addition to the nature preserves, state natural areas and local parks, Door County boasts 19 county parks and five state parks. Visitors to Sturgeon Bay, toward the southern end of the Door County Peninsula, may enjoy stopping to explore Cave Point County Park or Whitefish Dunes State Park. Cave Point County Park, located at 5360 Schauer Road in Sturgeon Bay, offers hiking trails and views of striking

four distinct seasons, visitors will find naturebased activities to suit their liking, whether sitting by a campfire, boating, swimming, or relaxing on a beach in summer, or cross-country skiing or snowshoeing in winter’s crystalline chill. Activities like hiking and documenting the changing seasons through fine art or photography hold their appeal throughout the year. State parks provide gateways to enjoyment of Lake Michigan, forests and the ecosystems along the shore, while historic lighthouses provide ongoing glimpses into the maritime

limestone cliffs edged with underwater caves. Whitefish Dunes Park, located at 3275 Clarks Lake Road in Sturgeon Bay, offers lovely terrain to explore: extensive sand dunes and forest accessible by daytime-use trails, all along the eastern Door County shore of Lake Michigan. Visitors can check availability of the nature center onsite, which when open, features displays and programs accessible to the public throughout the year. Door County offers an abundance of opportunities to be near or on the water. The peninsula itself is about 70 miles long and narrows from about 18 miles wide to under two miles from one side to the other toward the northernmost tip. Edged on three sides by Lake Michigan waters, with the bay of Green Bay forming the named portion of the water on the western edge of the peninsula, Door County features 300 miles of shoreline. About six-and-one-half miles of this shoreline is sandy. For those who love to kayak, swim, boat, or simply bask in nature’s peace, Door County’s shores include approximately 53 public beaches for swimming. An exploration of Door County reveals a rich collection of islands, 35 of which bear names. While some of these islands, such as Detroit Island, Hat Island, and Strawberry Islands are privately owned, others are open to and accessible for visitors. For those seeking solitude and a vehicle-free environment in which to restore and explore, Rock Island forms the state park furthest north in Door County. It is accessible by two ferry rides or by boat and is located northeast of Washington Island. Rock Island State Park offers beautiful beaches, hiking trails, and rustic camping. Chambers Island, Door County’s second largest island, may be found northwest of Fish Creek. Thanks to the Door County Land Trust, as of 2017, the island now enjoys preserved status for around 500 acres of wetlands, forest, and shoreline on its inland Lake Mackaysee. Visitors to Door County’s largest island, Washington Island, will enjoy the blend of activities available there, from cultural to recreational. Accessible via a ferry ride across the Death’s Door water passage, Washington Island includes a lovely lavender farm. Boasting lavender fields and around 20,000 blooming lavender plants, Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm, Shop and Le Café is located at 1350 Airport Road on Washington Island. While visiting the farm, guests can learn about the processes used to grow, harvest, and distill the lavender, or can pause to enjoy an a la carte lunch at Le Café onsite. a selection of sweets such as macaroons, lavender chocolates, ice cream and candies, in addition to an array of luxurious lavenderbased products, such as essential oils, sachets, perfumes, soaps and more. Door County is home to eleven historic lighthouses, beacons of the maritime world of the peninsula and its various ship passages. Some of these lighthouses may be found on the islands along the shore. Those who explore Door County’s island waterways and shoreline may also delve into the fascinating history of the shipwrecks along the shores. Cana Island is located off the shore near the town of Baileys Harbor. Cana Island’s popular lighthouse and associated buildings offer tours during the peak season, from May through October. The 89-foot-tall lighthouse celebrated its 150th year in 2019. The area near the lighthouse is picturesque, and the lighthouse itself is located not far from shore. Currently, high lake levels have spread water across the rocky causeway leading to the lighthouse. Visitors can therefore enjoy a free tractor or hay wagon ride over to the lighthouse, or may choose to wear foot gear that can get wet for a

wade over to the lighthouse. Baileys Harbor Range Lights replaced the Old Baileys Harbor lighthouse and are a part of The Ridges Sanctuary. Old Baileys Harbor lighthouse was closed early on due to its poor condition; travellers can note the unusual and “rare bird-cage lantern” on top of this lighthouse. Pottawatomie, or Rock Island Light, bears the distinction of being the oldest lighthouse in Wisconsin as well as the oldest on Lake Michigan. It was constructed in 1836. For those who relish learning more about this interesting aspect of Door County’s history, a visit may be planned in conjunction with one of Door County’s Lighthouse Festivals. Occurring annually in June and October, the Festival includes tours by land or boat to see each of the peninsula’s eleven historic lighthouses. This year’s fall Festival is currently scheduled for October 3-4, with the addition of new airplane lighthouse tour options. Looking ahead to summer of 2021, visitors may want to explore additional warm-weather outdoor adventures in the waters surrounding the Door Peninsula. Door County Adventure Rafting offers “fast and fun” tours in their RIBs, or “rigid inflatable tour boats.” Visitors can enjoy tours such as the one to the Death’s Door

area, and view the lighthouses on Pilot and Plum Island as well as a shipwreck submerged beneath five feet of water. Shipwrecks of the Grapeshot and Fleetwing can be viewed, and passengers on the tour can expect to learn a bit about the lighthouses’ and islands’ history while enjoying the ride. Among the many aspects of Door County to be explored, farms and orchards allow visitors to interact with harvest-time bounty in a memorable, hands-on fashion. A trip to the peninsula next summer might include a glimpse of the bountiful cherry harvest, usually ready between mid-July and early August. Apple orchards, berry farms, pumpkins in fall, and vineyards all round out the Door County food cultivating experience. Visitors may enjoy stopping at a country store, farm stand, or farmer’s market during the growing and harvest season to enjoy some of the fine fruits and fruit products available in Door County. Door County offers a wealth of opportunities for nature- or outdoor-based explorations and activities throughout Wisconsin’s four seasons. Interacting with the land and its bounty serves as a portal to the rich and unique history of this popular vacation destination. n

THE BEAUTIFUL HOME at 36055 Ravinia Park Blvd. in Summit, Wisconsin, combines appealing design with exquisite craftsmanship and custom details. Located on 2.91 acres, this thoughtfully arranged home includes three bedrooms and three full and one half bath on nearly 4,000 spacious square feet. The custom features and details in this immaculate home were planned and crafted by the owner and builder of high-end custom homes, Jeff Burg of JFK Design Build. A front walk leads past a perfectlytended expanse of emerald green lawn and up to the home’s front entry doors. The home features a convenient attached three-car garage accessible by a winding driveway. A stand of mature pines buffers the rear of the home; the trees cover over an acre of land and provide privacy throughout the year. The dense branches of these sizeable trees appear lush and green throughout the summer months, and in winter, snow gathered on the pine boughs forms a lovely, festive backdrop to the home. The back of the home features substantial windows, allowing a view of the shifting natural beauty of the surrounding land, while simultaneously allowing southern sunlight and warmth

Also off the foyer, a formal dining room includes lovely American Cherry wood floors and a peaceful view through a group of three generous rectangular windows. On the other side of the home’s open concept kitchen, an office room allows for comfortable study or work at home. Natural light enters this pleasing room through windows on two walls, and views of the trees and nature beyond provide respite on even the busiest workday. Attractive neutraltone carpeting bears a subtle, restful pattern reminiscent of the gentle undulations of beach sand or clear, shallow water. Muted sage green walls further enhance this natural sense in the room, while a recessed ceiling in a lighter neutral tone provides a sense of height and space. The master bedroom of this beautifully designed home mirrors the color and design scheme of the home office, with neutral-toned carpeting and sage green walls. A tray ceiling, ceiling fan, and ample walk-in closet add to the appeal of this restorative space. The master bath offers harmonious and pleasing design, with elegant wood cabinets beneath granitetopped vanities and a floor of 12-by-12-inch ceramic tiles. The home includes two additional bedrooms, perfect for family or visiting guests. One bedroom features soft neutral beige carpeting and pleasing lavender walls, with one wall formed almost wholly of a wide three-part window. A smaller, narrow three-part window high on the wall above the bed space offers additional natural light in this welcoming, airy space. The second bedroom includes similar carpeting, a ceiling fan, and another three-part window offering a peaceful view. The home’s lower level forms 1,000 of the home’s total square footage, and is finished to form a space to enjoy recreational games such as pool, foosball and other games and media. The lower level includes a full bath and additional room as well as a workshop perfect for woodworking projects. Homeowners will appreciate the blend of craftsmanship, luxurious details, and thoughtful, artistic design in the unique, appealing home at 36055 Ravinia Park Blvd. n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Thoughts On Creating An Economical Home

Energy bills are likely among the largest expenses for homeowners, but you can take action to lower those costs. During a remodel, a certified contractor can help you make smart decisions when it comes to selecting appliances, windows and insulation for your projects. n n n

SEPTEMBER 2020

THOUGH UPGRADES MADE with efficiency in mind can vary depending on the climate you live in, the biggest energy users are typically the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems and water heater, all of which make up about 60% of a typical home’s energy budget. Learn how you can reduce your home’s energy reliance and environmental impact with these tips from the experts at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry:

Heating and Cooling Climate control is one of the largest home energy users. A programmable thermostat is a simple starting point and can save up to one-third of heating and cooling costs. Cutting-edge models can even learn your family’s behaviors and tweak usage for maximum savings. Additional ways to save energy include sealing leaky ducts, cleaning or changing air filters regularly and replacing your furnace or air conditioner with an energy-efficient model, particularly if your heating and cooling systems are more than 15 years old. Insulation Studies show that only 20% of homes built before 1980 were well-insulated.

Depending on when your home was built, adding insulation in the attic and walls can be one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to reduce energy waste. Not only does better insulation reduce energy loss and improve comfort, it’s an upgrade that generally adds to the value of your home with an estimated 95% return on your investment. Windows High-performance windows not only lower heating and cooling bills, they also reduce heat gain during warmer months and add a layer of insulation when you need to keep the heat inside. Triple-pane, Low-E insulated frame windows can save 33% of the heating cost for a typical home in cooler climates, and in hotter environments, double-pane, low solar-gain windows can reduce cooling costs by up to 32%.

The heating, ventilation and airconditioning systems plus the water heater, all make up about 60% of a typical home’s energy budget. Lighting The average house dedicates 5-10% of its energy budget to lighting. To cut your use, switch to LED lights, turn off unneeded lights and, where possible, use natural light. Other measures, like relying on task lights and installing motion detectors, can help further limit your lighting-related energy usage. Appliances The refrigerator is a major energy drain, accounting for up to 15% of the energy bill in some homes, particularly models that are 15 years old or older. Design plays a major role in a refrigerator’s efficiency; it needs adequate air flow for optimal function. Be realistic about your needs and only buy as big a unit as you require. Be aware that icemakers and dispensers not only add to the up-front cost, they’re also less efficient. As with any appliance, shop for a model that offers as many energy-saving features as you can afford. Landscaping Trees positioned to reduce summer sun and winter wind can reduce a household’s energy use by 25% or more. In summer, trees can lower air temperature as much as 9 F through shading and evapotranspiration. In winter, a well-designed landscape can cut heating bills by about one-third. IMAGINE TURNING ONTO a long, winding driveway that takes you home to a different world. A world where you leave your cares behind and sink into the serenity of nature. That’s the magic of this beautiful town of Merton estate located in the heart of Lake Country. You feel as if you are in the North Woods at a beautiful resort four or five hours away, yet actually you’re close to the action, or as close as you care to be. The essence of this transitional Tutor reflects its surroundings. Built on 12.2 acres of private woods and prairie, you’ll see strength in the home’s natural stone exterior and whimsy in the unique polygon tower that graces its front view. Everything is custom and the quality is tangible: Brazilian cherry wood floors,

artful wrought iron, soaring ceilings, walls of windows and an abundance of natural light. When each element is combined, it’s an open invitation to close your eyes, take a deep breath, exhale slowly, and smile. The lush, green landscape outside provides a backdrop for almost every room inside of the home. The great room is flanked by windows, allowing natural light to spill into the voluminous space. Twenty foot, cathedral ceilings make the room feel fresh and airy. At the same time your eyes are drawn to a two-story natural stone fireplace, which grounds the space. A second floor balcony overlooks the great room. This open concept continues into a casual dining area and gourmet kitchen.

Best Of Both Worlds

n n n

There is a bright energy in the kitchen, fit for a chef, yet comfortable for family and friends. White cabinets contrast with darker granite counter tops for a look that is crisp, bold, and clean. A large island gives you plenty of room for food prep, while you talk with the kids about their homework or friends who stop by. A casual dining area is outlined with a custom wood floor inlay and opens to an elevated deck outside. Dine alfresco in what feels like a tree house and enjoy your natural surroundings. A butler’s pantry and bar provide a thoughtful transition into the formal dining room. Let’s talk about that wonderful polygon tower in the front of the home. It is the foundation for two very imaginative spaces, one on the first floor and another on the second. On the ground floor, French doors lead into the multi-dimensional room. Windows grace four of the six walls to light up the space. A gas fireplace adds intimacy and charm. It’s perfect for an office or family room. Whatever purpose you choose there’s one thing for sure, you’ll never want to leave.

Two separate staircases take you to the second floor. One is near the kitchen, and the other is in the grand foyer. The mains staircase is a study in contrast. Beautifully turned wood spindles are traditional and make an artistic statement when paired with one-of-a-kind wrought iron balusters on each stair. The graceful outcome is enough to take your breath away.

It provides an opportunity to live a world away from the whirlwind of everyday life, it’s the best of both worlds. The master bedroom is just as captivating with its enchanted view, whether new snow clings to bare branches in the forest or green leaves wave softly on a breeze. The room is spacious, to match the great outdoors, and so is an extra-large walk-in closet. There is nothing like the warmth of a heated, marble floor under your feet. That is what you’ll find in the ensuite spa bathroom along with a jetted tub, huge shower, rich cherry wood cabinets and ample storage. There are three more bedrooms on the second floor. One guest or children’s bedroom has a private, attached bathroom. The other two are joined by a Jack and Jill bathroom. The

polygon room on the second floor would make a great bedroom for one of the kids! Entertaining is made easy in the home’s finished and exposed lower level. Heated slate floors and a wood burning, pot-bellied stove create a cozy ambiance in the lower level family room. Serve your friends from the kitchenette or sit at the bar and watch a good game of billiards. There is space for a tennis table or your gym equipment. You can put a bed in the lower level bonus room, with an adjacent full bathroom. Just outside of the big windows and sliding glass doors of the lower level, enjoy that “other world” brought to you by Mother Nature. Watch for wildlife, hike on numerous walking paths, or pick wild raspberries from the grounds of your very own wooded sanctuary. This spectacular estate is inspired by and immersed in the calming power of nature. The home is beautifully appointed and attentively blends with its environment. It provides an opportunity to live a world away from the whirlwind of everyday life, with everything you need or want nearby. You could call it the best of both worlds, and you would almost be right. Actually, it’s the best of both worlds and so much more. n

BIOPHILIC DESIGN Invite the look and feel of nature into your home and reap the rewards of better health and wellness

n n n

BIOPHILIC DESIGN IS an interior design and architectural concept that was developed in the 1980s, and was founded on the principle that people have an innate need to connect with nature. Biophilic design is linked to better health and wellness in that bringing elements of nature inside the home helps to relieve stress and promotes relaxation and a calm atmosphere. Whether you are working on a small redecorating project or are looking to renovate your whole house, consider using these techniques to connect more with nature. Natural Wood Furniture and Finishings Natural wood furniture looks great in both classic and modern themed home designs and

is a simple way to make your home feel more connected to nature. Look for furniture that is constructed of solid wood and showcases all of the cracks, blemishes, and knots you would find in pieces cut down in the wild. Log cabin style furniture is among the best for achieving the natural look. To save some money, pull out your saw and hammer, and try constructing your own furniture pieces in your spare time. You can also use natural wood to create accent walls, floorboard trim, and wall decorations. Add More Windows Natural lighting is another key element of biophilic design. During your home renovation, consider adding bigger windows to various rooms

The furniture above, and the wood piece at the top of the page, were designed and created by Wood Station Co-op of Cambridge and Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. www.woodstation-coop.com

rooms of your home in an effort to maximize sunlight exposure and enjoy beautiful views of your exterior landscaping. Sunrooms are an excellent way to bring the beauty of outdoor gardens into your living space without all of the rain and other weather elements. Install large windows that can be opened so you can let in the warm spring and summer breeze. Indoor Gardens and Fountains Having plants in your home will provide a relaxing ambiance and will actually keep the air within your home cleaner. Plants act as natural air purifiers that do not require electricity or expensive air filters. For maximum air quality, make sure you have one plant per every one hundred square feet of space. Look for ferns, aloe vera plants, succulents and flowers that are low maintenance. Also position planter boxes near the windows or in your sunroom and enjoy the calming effects of an indoor garden. Water fountains are also great for indoor living spaces because they offer tranquility. Find a water fountain that features natural stones and has relaxing glowing lights. Fountains are perfect for living rooms and bedrooms, as the sweet lull of the running water will drift you off to your happy place. Natural Sounds and Smells While natural furnishings and live plants are important elements of biophilic design, so are the smells and sounds of nature. You can make your home smell more like the great outdoors by adding scented candles, potpourri, or even flowers like lavender that have strong heavenly scents. You can also incorporate the sounds of nature into the design of your home thanks to surround sound speakers. Find recordings of peaceful jungle sounds, waves crashing on the shoreline, or birds singing in the woods. Colors of Nature Natural colors are paramount to biophilic design. Choose paints, stains, and fabrics that mimic the colors found in nature so that you can maximize the feeling of bringing the outdoors inside. If you have flower producing plants outside that are visible from your windows, take some of those colors and incorporate them into the decorations indoors so that your outdoor living space and your indoor living space compliment one another. Invite the look and feel of nature into your home and reap the rewards of better health and wellness. When you give in to your innate need to connect with nature, you will get to enjoy an indoor living space that feels like a true sanctuary. n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

GOD’S CORNER n n n

30

by Ger trude M. Puelicher

DID YOU HEAR the swish? That was summer rushing by. I put out a hand to detain her, but she eluded my grasp. I put out a foot to trip her, but to no avail. She sped happily on, accompanied by her satellites, not only wedges of Canadian geese in organized formation noisily honking their way through startled clouds, but also thrushes, warblers and smallest of all, tiny hummingbirds. Often I wonder why I didn’t make a greater friend of summer while she was around. The outer trail with its winding slopes—why didn’t I take Jacques on more frequent walks for no other reason than to revel in splintered sunlight through forest foliage? Why did I think going 55 feet down the hill to the pier was too much of an effort when I well knew the joy of floating down the lake to the far end where a few unmolested loons play water games and where deer come down to the shore to walk slowly in the cool water? Why did I permit myself to miss so much that was right at my fingertips? We do the same thing, however, with our daily lives. We let so much slip through our fingers that would bring fulfillment to ourselves as well as to others. A note to some lonely friend? A helping hand to a neighbor whose home

is spilling over with small children who don’t know how to entertain themselves? A listening ear to a disturbed teenager? A dish of custard to an elderly couple in need of a bit of attention? What may seem trivial to you and me may mean an entire day of relief and release to another. What we are really doing is letting love slip through our fingers. Love, the most important ingredient in our being! Love, an absolute necessity if life is to be worthwhile! We’ve all heard the catchy slogan that asks: “Have you hugged your child today?” What it means is, “Have you let your child know lately that you love him or her? Love must not be taken for granted; it must be demonstrated. The Nazarene carpenter made clear the importance of love when he admonished us, “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Paul told the Romans, “Love worketh no ill to his neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.” And finally, John, the beloved disciple, said, “Beloved, let us love one another for love is of God—He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” If we let love slip through our fingers as I let summer slip through mine, we are letting God slip through. To lose God is to waste a lifetime. When we hold fast to love, we hold fast to God. n
