WELCOME TO THE INCREDIBLE CITY OF
Edinburgh
by Gina Campbell
REGAL CASTLES, proud bagpipers in kilts, premium whisky and hearty haggis are some of the iconic sights of Scottish culture that you can see and experience while on tour in Edinburgh. Equally beautiful in every season, any time of the year is perfect to visit. The beautiful history and rich tradition is felt everywhere you go in the Scottish capital city.
Edinburgh Castle is one of the most photographed buildings in Scotland and a place once inhabited by kings and queens and their royal subjects. Roam around the castle grounds for a few lovely hours and let the history of the place sink into your traveling soul. Watch out of the ghost of the late Queen Margaret, who died there is 1093. Buy a few souvenirs to remind you of one of the most iconic stops on the tourist map of Edinburgh.
The Royal Mile, a Scottish medieval mile, starts at the Palace of Holyroodhouse and leads through the quaint old town

of Edinburgh city right to the gates of the castle. Along the way you can admire the ancient stone architecture at a leisurely pace by stopping in shops, many of which sell traditional goods, and maybe pausing for a whisky break at a local pub with many options to choose from.
Leith is a happening port district with a trendy waterfront area, historical buildings, authentic restaurants and artsy shopping. The smell of sea salt lingers in the air, and even though it’s very close to the main city the pace of life seems to slow down in the interesting coastal area. There is a festival in Leith every June and Edinburgh is well-known for festivals throughout the year, with the most famous one being the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world’s largest arts festival, which attracts thousands of people.
Edinburgh is a wonderful combination of a modern and happening city blended with an endless flow of culture and tradition. It is a beautiful and meaningful place to explore with friendly Edinburghers, who love to share their city with visitors.
A leisurely hike to the extinct volcano, Arthur’s Seat, will give you your exercise for the day and some amazingly gorgeous photos of the cityscape as well. Take a wellearned break and sit and enjoy the stunning views with a nice bottle of wine and some food. It will be the picnic of a lifetime.
Edinburgh is quite popular with foodies and has a huge array of top notch restaurants. Of course you have to try the national dish of haggis, at least once to say you did it. The pudding is made from sheep’s heart, liver and lungs. It’s mixed with onion, oatmeal, spices and seasoning and cooked while traditionally encased in the animal’s stomach. The description isn’t exactly mouthwatering, but don’t knock it until you try it. It’s a famous and much-loved Scottish dish.
Edinburgh is a wonderful combination of a modern and happening city blended with an endless flow of culture and tradition. It is a beautiful and meaningful place to explore with friendly Edinburghers (Edinburgh locals), who love to share their city with visitors. It is no wonder there is a high rate of return tourists to this wonderfully interesting place in the United Kingdom. n

QAir UALITY
IMPROVING THE AIR IN YOUR HOME IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER
THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC continues to change the way people spend time in their homes. From work to working out, more out-of-thehouse activities have moved to the home.
In fact, according to the 2021 American Time Use Survey, 38% of employed people did some or all of their work from home. That means better indoor air quality at home is as important as ever.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air quality can be up to five times worse than outdoor air quality. With the average person taking about 22,000 breaths per day, installing smarter indoor air quality technology is key to healthier living year-round.
Improving your home’s air quality begins with recognizing what contributes to poor indoor air quality, the potentially harmful effects and how to address these problems.
Off-gassing
Off-gassing from construction materials, carpeting, adhesives and synthetic materials, as well as solvents from common household cleaners, can accumulate in even wellconstructed homes. Continuous ventilation solutions can help reduce the harmful effects of off-gassing, such as headaches, nausea and irritation in your eyes, nose and throat.
Simple smart ventilation fans and good ventilation can help control off-gassing in your home. Other options for reducing the
13SEPTEMBER 2022
n n n
impact of off-gassing include shopping for products designed for low or no volatile organic compound emission and adding houseplants that naturally help filter and purify the air, though houseplants only offer a small amount of help.
Moisture
Moisture that is not properly ventilated can cause mildew and mold formation, which can potentially lead to structural problems and health issues. For most homes, the optimal humidity balance is 40-60%, but those levels can be hard to maintain in high-humidity spaces like bathrooms.
Antimicrobial light technology combined with powerful ventilation offers effective protection against bacteria, mold and fungi growth in your home. An option like the Broan SurfaceShield LED Exhaust Fan kills viruses and prevents mold, bacteria and fungi growth on surfaces in your bathroom or other humidityprone environments. Featuring two lighting modes, an everyday white light perfect for task lighting and a continuous antimicrobial mode, the cover is also designed to stay cleaner longer with less louvers in which dust and dirt can get trapped.
Cooking effluents
Cooking effluents from food preparation can infiltrate the whole house in minutes. Grease, oils and aromas settle permanently into carpet, furniture, clothing and other surfaces. Kitchen ventilation solutions can help eliminate cooking effluents for a cleaner, more comfortable and healthier environment.
For example, the Broan Elite 21-Inch Custom Range Hood Power Pack offers a custom appearance while protecting cabinetry with stainless steel liners. Bright LED lighting enhances your cooking experience while the four-speed, back-lit, soft touch control and WiFi connectivity enabling voice control makes operating the hood easy. Automatic infrared sensing allows your range hood to adjust the speed of your fan based on your cooking style.
Pollutants
Stemming from sources like space heaters, gas stoves, woodstoves, indoor furnaces, dryers and fireplaces, combustion pollutants are gases or particles that come from burning materials. Examples include carbon monoxide - causing headaches, dizziness, disorientation, nausea and fatigue - and nitrogen dioxide - causing eye, nose and throat irritation; impaired lung function; and increased respiratory infections.
When possible use appliances that vent to the outside, ventilate rooms where fuelburning appliances are in use and ensure these appliances are properly installed, used, adjusted and maintained.

Increase Your Home’s Value With Practical Upgrades
WHETHER YOU’VE PURCHASED a new house or are just looking to invest in what is likely your largest asset, home improvements can make your living space more comfortable, functional and stylish.
Homebuyers are looking for practical home amenities that allow them to live, work and play - such as dedicated home offices, backyard retreats, home gyms and more - without having to worry about any potential future restrictions caused by the pandemic, according to a survey by Zolo of more than 3,300 new homeowners and potential first-time buyers in 2022.
Consider these popular upgrade ideas to create a space built for your family’s needs that can also increase resale value down the line.
Home Office
At the height of the pandemic, many professionals found themselves working remotely - a trend that continued as restrictions were lifted. In fact, 46% of survey respondents listed
a dedicated office space as a must-have when purchasing a new home. When creating this space, keep function and efficiency top of mind. Build your home office around a desk - either standing or traditional - then consider additions like an ergonomic chair and keyboard, soft light desk lamp, moodboosting plants and a white board to stay organized. Don’t forget to add flairs of personality like artwork, knick-knacks or photos of loved ones to make it your own.
Skylights
By improving the overall look and functionality of dark spaces, such as home offices where natural light can improve creativity and productivity, an option like skylights can increase the value of a home, and 55% of new homebuyers rated skylights as desirable or essential, according to research from the National Association of Home Builders. For rooms that need brightening, skylights can free up wall space for storage while adding abundant natural light and increasing ventilation.
17SEPTEMBER 2022
n n n
An option like Velux No Leak Solar-Powered Fresh Air Skylights help rid indoor air of bacteria, volatile organic compounds and carbon dioxide.
Over the long-term, high-quality skylights can also help reduce carbon emissions and home energy consumption, saving money on household bills, according to Urban Grade. Remote-controlled models can be opened to bring fresh air inside, and with light-filtering or room-darkening shades homeowners have maximum control over the exact amount of light they want. Plus, solarpowered shades come in more than 75 colors and patterns, allowing homeowners nearly endless customization options. Learn more at whyskylights.com.
Backyard Retreat
Perfect for hosting friends, dining al fresco or simply relaxing with the backdrop of nature, 48% of survey respondents cited a backyard retreat as a must-have home amenity. Start with a deck or patio then customize your outdoor living space to meet your family’s wants and needs. Weather-proof furniture can add comfort while features like outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, fans and lighting can create a connection to your indoor areas that add both style and function.
Walk-In Pantry
If you want to add a pantry in your kitchen, you’re not alone. Walk-in pantries found their way onto 48% of respondents’ lists of musthaves. To get started, consider your storage needs to determine the amount of space you’ll require and remember to vary shelving heights to maximize space. Open shelving can also be combined with additional counter space, cabinets, pull-out organizers and other features to help match the design to the rest of your kitchen.
Home Gym
Another trend that rose in popularity amid the pandemic, home gyms can take on a variety of shapes and sizes, utilizing available space in the garage, basement, a spare bedroom or even the backyard. Providing more time to fit workouts into your schedule, home gyms can be customized with equipment most important for your lifestyle. From yoga mats, jump ropes and free weights to treadmills, ellipticals and benches and racks, your space, budget and goals can help in the creation or update of a dedicated, in-home workout space.

Haven MAKE YOUR HOUSE
IF EVER THERE WAS a need to create a tranquil escape from the chaos of the world, the time is now. Converting your living space into a soul-soothing refuge may be easier than you think as a serene color palette is often all you need to shift the mood of your home.
For many people, the home is a personal sanctuary, and through thoughtful color design, you can discover a renewed sense of balance and ease each time you walk through your front door. Incorporating colors inspired by simplicity and serenity can create spaces that transform the home into a soothing and comfortable space.
A restorative style starts with soft and natural colors; simplicity, approachability and comfort are also essential. Softened tones keep things easy and uncomplicated for spaces that feel balanced and meaningful.
To start creating a peaceful refuge within your home, consider these tips from the experts at HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams to discover how to use color to paint a sense of calm for all who enter.
Peace on the Porch
Fuss-free styling on the front porch sets a tone for the ambiance inside. Make sure all who enter know this is a place of calm and comfort by using soft, subtle colors. A fresh coat of exterior paint - or a new shade on the front doorcan help freshen and brighten the space while purposeful, understated furnishings and accessories lend themselves to a graceful welcome.

by Sherwin-Williams 2022 Color Collection of the Year offers multiple options that exude peacefulness and facilitate tranquility. The Softened Refuge Collection, available exclusively at Lowe’s, is composed of 10 soft and simple tones that can be mixed and matched in any combination for a perfectly cohesive look.
Color that mimics the hues found naturally outdoors tend to soothe the soul. Introduce natural calm to a place your family enjoys congregating by updating walls to a sophisticated organic green that is rooted in nature.
One highlight is the 2022 Color of the Year, Aleutian, a washed indigo that is grounded by the warmth of its red undertones and bridges the gap between warm and cool tones. It pairs beautifully with wood tones so you can easily incorporate practical furnishings that lend to an aura of relaxation and comfort.
Laid-Back Living Room
Color that mimics the hues found naturally outdoors tend to soothe the soul. Introduce natural calm to a place your family enjoys congregating by updating walls to a sophisticated organic green that is rooted in nature. Carry the relaxed mood throughout the room with complementing nature-inspired neutrals for your furniture, window treatments and accent pieces.
Subtle Kitchen Spice
A stark white kitchen may feel crisp and clean, but it lacks the character that color brings. You can keep that airy feeling while infusing some gentle, welcoming warmth. Painted cabinets are on trend, so this is a perfect place to play with color. Use a light neutral taupe for the cabinets then balance with a warm, creamy white on the walls. If you’re worried the space may be dull, infuse a bit of color with a neutral blue on the backsplash. The soft hues work harmoniously for a simple but stylish space.
“The Softened Refuge palette is designed to simplify color selection for a perfectly coordinated home design,” said Ashley Banbury, HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams senior color designer. “Color combinations within the Collection can easily be used to craft spaces that help promote positive physical and mental well-being.”

GOD’SCORNER
WHAT IS HAPPENING to America that we are failing to see the goodness of the Lord? For one thing, we are running the gamut of emotions. At the drop of a hat, dissent, condemnation, criticism crowd the news. Rational thinking is clogged.
For another thing, “Where there is no vision, the people perish,” and America has lost its vision. There are no more geographical frontiers whose dangers must be overcome. There was once a unifying desire to progress westward. That goal has been accomplished. There are no new worlds to conquer. The first moon flight was an event extraordinaire. The last moon flight, for many, had lost its savor.
“Not by might, nor by power but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” Is that where our problem lies? Have we taken
by Gertrude M. Puelicher
affairs into our own hands by relying upon our humanhood to solve every problem? Have we forgotten that winning a war never establishes a permanent peace? Might and power may endure temporarily, but unless the Spirit of God is brought to bear upon every situation there can be no lasting harmony.
When Job was complaining about all his afflictions and trying to justify himself to God, Elihu told him, “There is a spirit in man and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.” Hasn’t the time arrived for Americans to seek within themselves for the spiritual inspiration that alone can give them a right understanding in handling every situation? One wonders at times of what avail Christianity? Over twothousand years of a supposed religion of
love, and we are surrounded on every hand by conflict, resentment, hate, racism.
Our country once enjoyed the distinction of leadership among nations. Today we are disjointed, disunited. We are turned upon ourselves. We have lost our moral footing. We have lost sight of the importance of God. We are no longer tuned in to the spiritual.
Fortunately for us, God offers us an opportunity to mend our ways if we are interested. In Micah we read, “But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains— and people shall flow into it—and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”
