Westphal

Mansion Inn

The Westphal Mansion Inn is a stately English Tudor mansion perched high upon a hill overlooking the picturesque historic downtown of Hartford on 90 South Main Street. In 2000, Pam and Garret Terpstra purchase the edifice that would become not just their home, but also a home away from home for visitors and guests. The mansion was opened as a Bed and Breakfast in September 2007. As the restoration of this building shaped the house back into its former glory as a focal point in the city, it rekindled a dedication in the tradesmen, community members and the Terpstras to the value of the history and grandeur of times gone by. The Westphal Mansion, originally built in 1913, sits on a triangular piece of property that overlooks the business district of Hartford. August Westphal, the original owner of this house, was well know in the state and nationally as the “Cheese King” and one of the largest cheese manufacturers in Wisconsin. He owned and operated more than 50 cheese factories and built the condensery in Hartford. His brick cheese won many awards and scored highly at the Wisconsin State Fair and was shipped abroad. This beautiful 27 room, three-story house had unfortunately fallen into disrepair over the years. It had been converted into a boarding house and then a five family rental. The many different renovations, water damage and neglect over the years had taken its toll on this former jewel of the city.

More than just a flower store!

Westphal Mansion Inn Pam and Garret were up to the challenge. They had moved to Hartford in 1985 to raise a family and renovate another stately home. Their first house, located just 5 blocks form the Westphal Mansion, was a 20-year project. They worked at a leisurely pace as they lovingly restored and added collected antiques to the décor. “We drove and walked past this mansion for over 20 years just watching it deteriorate over time,” Pam said. “The building went through a lot of neglect both inside and out. It became an eyesore and something the community didn’t even pay attention to.” The family that owned the mansion before the Terpstra’s purchase began the clean-up process and started rewiring the building. Pam and Garret had approached the owners to let them know of their interest in purchasing the home if it would ever come up for sale. In 2005, the transaction was complete. The Terpstras were the new owners of this iconic building and ready to begin the process of this home’s rebirth. Garret acted as the general contractor and Pam as the

project designer and organized a team of highly qualified craftsman to complete the project. The community supported them throughout the process. “It took us about a year to put our business plan together,” Pam explained. “We started the renovation in 2007 and worked with about 35 different contractors for the next eight months until the project was completed in September 2007. Garret and I did some of the work ourselves within the mansion.” The goal was to try and restore the mansion back to its original look–the natural woodwork in the house needed to be cleaned, the 92+ windows needed to be refinished and repaired and all the exterior windows needed storms and frames completely rebuilt. What they had to work with though was a solid piece of craftsmanship, the walls were all double lath and plaster and they could tell where any additions or changes had been made because the interior walls were of different material. “There were no original plans or architectural drawings of what is was originally,” Garret said. “But, the walls talk, Continued on page 34

Fox Lake Country Antique Mall By Andrea Budde

For the past 10 years, all generations of antique lovers, collectors and DIYers have made Fox Lake Country Antique Mall their shopping destination of choice. While the specific interests of antique lovers may change through the generations, what never changes are the memories and stories shared between family members that purchase or revamp a piece together. Mall owner and Town of Oconomowoc resident Cindy Budde explained that in those 10 years, she has seen generations of families come into the store time-after-time. While they may not always be looking for the same type of items, they truly relish in the experience of being there together.

At the forefront of the shop’s appeal is a dedicated team of counterpersons–all of who have booths in the mall. The group functions less as a group of co-workers but more as a family. “They take personal responsibility. For them, it’s their shop, too,” said Budde. The atmosphere is designed to be fun and bright, and welcoming to the entire family. And when Budde says the entire family is welcome, she is not kidding. A dog lover, Budde has several special shopping carts with blanketed bottoms reserved for shoppers to tote their dog around the mall in. It is not uncommon to find guests dancing and singing in the aisles or laughing among the complimentary coffee and cookies. “It’s fun when you see people shopping and dancing.” The mall is designed to feel like home. Aisles are six feet wide to accommodate all guests. Additionally, the extra space

Fox Lake Country Antique Mall really allows visitors to literally step back and visualize a piece in their home, rather than feeling squeezed inside of a tiny aisle. “The extra space really is a luxury,” explained Budde. Each aisle is well lit which allows guests to easily see each piece. A collaborative booth is redesigned each month using pieces from the many dealers in the mall. The space is impeccably designed by the team to feel like a real room in a home. Since its inception, the booth has quickly become a point of inspiration for shoppers, designers, and more. Moreover, the space is an opportunity for dealers to highlight some of their larger furniture pieces. As a bonus to her dealers, Budde allows them to keep all of the proceeds of the items sold from the booth. Offering more than just antiques and collectables, Fox Lake Country Antique Mall is a prime destination for all kinds of DIYers. The mall features an array of barn board, hardware, paint including Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan, and other DIY items. Shoppers are sure to find the perfect furniture piece to make their own, or the perfect door to turn into a headboard. “Our team loves helping guests brainstorm ideas, and make decisions or collaborate on a do-it-yourself project,” Budde stated. As experts in antiques, collecting, and more, the team at Fox Lake Country Antique Mall is dedicated to taking extra time to make sure each guest leaves with not only the right piece, but a piece that has the right look for what they’re trying to achieve. They’re are apt to point out any flaws in a piece, in case the customer hadn’t seen it, and make sure guests leave with a complete understanding of what they’ve purchased. “I don’t want guests to be unhappy with what they’ve purchased,” assured Budde. The clerks always love to see children and teens come in and find an item for a collection of theirs, as well as seeing completed DIY projects that they helped someone achieve. Fox Lake Country Antique Mall is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about Fox Lake Country Antique Mall or to contact them, visit hwww.foxantiquemalls.com or call (262) 560-0890. At Home with Country Life... Inspiring ways to bring country style into your home.

Country Bouquet Bring the allure of a stroll through a morning meadow indoors with this cheerful everlasting floral arrangement created by designer Sue Morgan of Monches Farm. Monches Farm’s designer Sue Morgan has been creating floral art for over 25 years. She would be happy to work with you to create a custom piece for your home using your design colors and reflecting your personal style. Call her at Monches Farm at 262-966-2787 for a consultation. To create this piece Sue used (all floral material is “silk”): Vintage French Metal Milk Pitcher (13" high x 6" wide) Block of dried floral foam Green sheet moss 2 stems white Coneflower 1 bunch small purple daisies, divided and cut into three stems 2 bunches of mini Sunflowers 4 stems Queen Anne’s Lace 4 bunches purple Hydrangea Foliage Elements (2-3 stems of each): n Sensitive Fern n Maidenhair Fern n Lady Fern n Silver Artemisia n Leafy Branches n Budded Branches n Meadow Grass n Ivy

Cut foam to fit container. Secure foam in container with glue. Line inner edge of container with sheet moss. Add the everlasting floral & foliage elements in the following order: n Start with budded branches in center to anchor arrangement. n Add remaining foliage elements, bending to suggest movement and replicate the effect of an informal flower bouquet. n Add floral elements, distributed evenly. n Material added in the bottom third of the arrangement should be glued in at a slight downward angle so as to suggest natural trailing effect over the edge of container and material in top third of arrangement should be bent upward. Enjoy your creation! n

the house changed hands, practicality was more important than entertainment. The majority of the changes in the interior included adding walls to accommodate rental units. The grand staircase was removed and boarded up, light fixtures removed or replaced and hallways and doors were added so that each section of the house could be rented out. “The biggest thing for me through this whole restoration was putting in the grand staircase,” Pam said. “It was the finishing jewel that was needed. We wanted to create something that looked like it had

Pam explained that the Westphals had designed the home for socializing. Once

been in the mansion the whole time. One of the carpenters came back with a post that looks exactly like the original wood pillars that we have in the house. From this they created the staircase in exactly the same spot and the same width, where the staircase had been.” Having been built in 1913, much of the original work in the house had been done by hand. The Terpstras found that the contractors and craftsman they hired were up to the challenge to be part of the historic restoration. “I was the general of this project,” Garret said. “But we gave them the responsibility and the authority to use their best judgment. We gave them the poetic license to be creative, still knowing that we wanted to stay in period. Almost everyone that was here bought into the idea–bring back an icon, the jewel of the city.” Pam added, “They all had to be excellent craftsmen to be able to replicate what we had here before. Our guys took ownership and pride in what they did.” The fountain was installed in 1917 by the Westphals. By the time the Terpstra purchased the home, it was filled with dirt and garbage. It needed quite a bit of restoration, but it is now operational and runs in the warmer months. Pam explained that because this is a Bed and Breakfast business they have tried to incorporate both modern and vintage amenities in each space. They added central air conditioning to the house, each of the eight suites has a small refrigerator, wireless internet is available, all suites have their own private baths and a four-course breakfast including dessert is served daily. Our homemade four-course breakfasts are prepared with Farm to Table fresh picked produce from Eva’s Gardens, LLC Neosho, Wisconsin and finished with a decadent dessert. We also make specialty breakfasts by request for guests with dietary restrictions. It’s a perfect location, perfect setting for a Bed & Breakfast,” Pam said. “The history of the home and its process just keeps going on and on with every guest we have through. Our job is to make sure that each person has a wonderful experience here.” Pam and Garret’s passion to preserve the original character, architecture and rich history can be felt throughout the mansion. An old world ambiance and grandeur were preserved as well. Special attention to detail, comfort and luxurious amenities are what their guests can experience while staying at the inn. “A Bed and Breakfast is not just for romance and a weekend getaway,” Pam said. “It’s a second home for travelers and business people, a unique experience to relax and be pampered as well. We have a massage therapist who comes on site. We’ve had couples coming for Babymoons, that last getaway before the baby comes. We’ve had an increase in golfers, they are looking for that pampered lodging not too far away from several courses in the area.” The Westphal Mansion is registered as a historical landmark in Washington County. Pam and Garret enjoyed learning the history and many different stories connected to this building as they researched the records and traced the paperwork through the many different generations. During the process of sifting through the historical records, Pam and Garret connected with family members of the original owners. They received wedding photos of the Westphals and a special chins serving dish that belonged to Mary Westphal. The Terpstras hard work has truly been a labor of love. The Westphal Mansion is a historical landmark that the Hartford community can once again be proud to have. In September 2011, Pamela’s Corner Boutique was opened to the Inn’s guests and the public. It is located on site, in the restored original 2-car garage. Customers are always amazed with the variety of antiques, artist originals, Century Farmhouse Soaps, decadent Indulgence Chocolates, victorian jewelry, ladies, infant and childrens boutique accessories, unique handmade chenille jackets, wool mittens, bedspring Christmas trees and country keepsakes that can be found in this gift shop.
