How long have you been in business?  We’ve been in the floral industry for over 40 years.

How did you get started in this line of business?

First of all, Liz and I are really twins. We were very active in high school clubs/ organizations. The owner at Seasons 4 in New Berlin offered us a job. She knew of us for coming in the shop for different occasions. She was a twin and had hired a driver who was a twin. It was just easier to train two people at once.

What changes have you seen over the years open?

Trends have changed in design, color palette, etc and then they come back full circle. Who would have though cascade bridal bouquets would be back? They are!

How many locations have you worked at?

Seasons 4 in New Berlin, Monet in LaCrosse, Guenther in Onalaska and Twins Flowers currently.

What do you most Love about your Industry?

Every day is different. Working with beautiful flowers is a joy. We both love the seasons changing and setting up new displays.  We get to see a change in

seasons sooner. We bring in new giftware for each season. The coolers have seasonal and all occasion fresh arrangements. We keep our coolers full of a variety.

We love our great customers. New people drive past maybe for years, and we greet them saying, “ We have been waiting for you.” It’s a perk of the business for us, getting to know our customers.

What are some of the common myths you come across in your business?

Working in a flowershop is not just putting flowers in a vase. It’s more than that! Washing buckets, cleaning flowers, watering plants,

answering phones, greeting customers and helping them with their floral and gift needs, arrange flowers, have order ready so our driver can deliver on time, take garbage out. We all wear many hats!!

What message would you most like to share with people?

Believe in yourself and you can do it. Always look forward. We did not have a formal education or college degree in floral design, yet we run this wonderful business. We took a leap and haven’t looked back.

What would you like people to know about your business?

We look small on the outside, but we are big on the inside. We are a full-service flower shop. We are well stocked with a variety of giftware

and home decor. Candles, books, jewelry, linens, wall art, seasonal decorations, yard art, even some foodies. We have a “She Shed” in the back yard and our Merry Cottage holds treasures that are available at reduced prices.

What is the biggest compliment customers give you?

Our customers keep coming back and refer their friends and family. We are not big on tooting on our own horn, so our customers really help us grow our business.

What are you most proud of?

We are proud to give back to the community and organizations we grew up with and love.

Participating in State Fair, the Christmas Fantasy House, raising money and awareness for ovarian cancer and supporting the New Berlin food pantry.

How many employees/Family work with you?

We have 10 part-time employees, 3 drivers and we add more at peak times. We are fortunate to have friends, family, past employees and even customers that have pitched in when needed. Liz and I work full-time and our husbands pitch in with lawn care, maintenance, technical service and even floor washing.

What are you most grateful for?

Our awesome team, our loyal customers and being able to do work we love.

Who/what can you credit your success?

Our grandparents and parents who taught us the value of hard works. Also, our customers who believe in us and trust us with their floral needs.

What are some of the upcoming events you will be holding?

Fall Artisan/Craft Fair October 14th , 9am to 3pm. Incredible Fall selection indoors along with Local artisans fill our yard with talent.

Our Christmas Open House November 17th,  9am to 5:3pm November 18 9am to 4pm.

What is your favorite time of the year?

Fall is our favorite season. Then, after Christmas is put away, We like when all the spring colors come out in January. Our bulb gardens come from a local greenhouse at that time.

As business partners, how do you divide up the many responsibilities?

Liz works in the back room doing flowers and organizes the drivers. Theresa takes care of the giftware, the She Shed, Merry Cottage and yard design. It is good having two of us as there is always much to do. ~

WE LOVE Antiques

Check out this fabulous barbers pole! This  “as found” trade sign came from Harrisburg, PA. It was still on the wall when they closed this old barber shops doors. Dates back to the 1800s. Original paint and square nails… and yes, they did have hair back in those days. They’re just lucky I wasn’t cutting hair at the time, or things may have been different.

How long have you been in business?

As a hobby 1950 to 1993 and as an incorporated business 1993 to present.

When and how did you get started?

The farm was purchased as a weekend getaway by Irving and Ethel Puntenney in 1950. There were a few apple trees in the yard and Irv with his daughters started planting an additional 200 trees (most of which were heirloom varieties) in an adjacent field. Apples were sold in bushels off of a farm wagon. Bill Stone (son-in-law.) decided to retire early and expanded the business in 1983. A sales area was added, and then refrigeration and apple cider followed. Aeppeltreow Winery joined us in 2001 and Glas All Naturals cheese joined us in 2015, both located on site and run as separate entities.

What changes have you seen over the years open?

In the past, our customers were mainly local farmers and neighbors, who bought in bulk, and all transactions were made in cash. Now our customers are mainly small town and city dwellers looking for farm entertainment on fall weekends. About 60% of our present sales are now done on credit cards.

How many varieties of apples do you harvest every year?

We harvest over 150 apple varieties, about 10 pear varieties, and Russian quince.

What other products do you sell?

In addition to Apples?

We sell fall add-on products, such as squash, pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, and other favorites, such as apple cider, apple cider donuts, honey, jellies and jams, baking mixes, cheese, and popcorn.

How many other locations do you sell your apples presently?

The Orchard sales area is open mid-August to Thanksgiving, Tuesdays through Sundays 9 AM to 5 PM and we are closed on Mondays. We attend six off farm markets on weekends.

What do you love most about your industry? We love sharing our beautiful rural western Kenosha County setting with customers and providing them with a relaxing buying experience plus a chance to learn a little bit or lots about the history and growing of apples if they are so inclined.

What are some of the common myths you come across in your business?

The public in general does not understand that essentially all fruits not just apples, are propagated by grafting, since their seeds will not bear true. And oh yes, apples must be refrigerated to maximize their quality and store-ability.

What message would you most like to share with people?

Fruit is not only good for you, but can be grown locally in a sustainable fashion.

What would you like people to know about your business?

People tend to romanticize the agricultural industry and frequently fail to understand the complexity and labor-intensive nature of growing and selling produce. Today about 2% of Americans are farmers and just a little over 100 years ago 90% were farmers. Scientific progress has dramatically changed agriculture from fewer smaller family farms, to much larger, corporate operations. This is largely because of the efficiencies of size, competition and government regulations.

What is the biggest compliment customers give you?

We hear frequently how customers appreciate us remaining in business. We are now selling to third generation buyers. Our treehouse is a favorite with kids, and everyone loves our fresh apple cider donuts and ultraviolet treated apple cider.

What are you most proud of?

We are grateful for our beautiful rural setting and are proud to operate an orchard business that provides a memorable positive experience to our ever-expanding customer base.

How many employees and/or family work with you?

We have five family members, an orchard manager, a Business Manager and about 15 other seasonal employees.

Who or what can you credit your success?

Our loyal customers, and employees and the beautiful fruit that we raise each season, all should get a standing ovation.

Who is now mainly in charge of orchard operations?

Bill and Judith Stone, Paula Puntenney (the three owners), Jimmy Thelen (orchard manager), Melissa Brand (Business Manager), plus daughter Sarah Stone Waters (graphics) and son-in-law, Josh, who help on busy fall weekends. ~

Historic Downtown Ripon is proud to introduce our newest event, the Rhythm & Brews Craft Beer Celebration which is sponsored by Knuth Brewing Company. Rhythm & Brews is a craft brew sampling event which will take place from 5:30 to 8:30pm at participating businesses. Attendees will have the opportunity to sample up to 14 specialty seasonal craft brews at participating businesses. Limited tickets, which are $30 in advance, are required for this event and available only through Eventbrite. Attendees must be 21 years of age or older to participate. All participants must wear a wristband during the event.The Craft Beer Celebration is a rain or shine event, and all ticket sales are final. This oil on canvas, Portrait de femme, 1902 was created by French artist, Jacques Louis Barcat (1877-1955). He was a painter of portraits, landscapes, and architectural views. In 1911 Barcat received an honorable mention by the prestigious Salon des Artistes Français (Society of French Artists) in Paris. He studied under world-renowned French artist, Gérôme*, who was considered one of the most important painters from the academic period. By the late 1800s, Gérôme was of the most famous living artists. This painting is available for sale at Amy Renee’s Kreative Touch, located in Downtown West Allis, WI.

What is a Pop-up Shop Event? A Pop-up Shop Event is where a variety of vendors “pop-up” for a day to sell everything from quality handmade arts, crafts, antiques to

helpful services. Pop-up Shops are scheduled monthly at Coffeeville Company in Jackson, WI. These are indoor events. Shop Local! Stop by and enjoy a cup of coffee, delicious homemade bakery, hoagies and soups while shopping these exciting vendors. Typically offered two Sundays a month.
