Wiki Woolz & WARES

Wiki Woolz & Ware’s owner, Lori Domzil talks about her business. How long have you been in business? Wiki Woolz started in business in 2005 with my Sister in law Christine Nierzwicki! How did you get started? Wiki Woolz came to life when we started making wickedly warm mittens as we spent weekends in ice cold hockey rinks watching my niece and nephew play hockey! So much has changed since 2005, four of our six grandchildren play hockey! We are still making mittens and spending available weekends in hockey rinks! Five years ago we were encouraged by a customer to expand our business to be not so seasonal and offer custom T-shirts and apparel! It was that moment that Wiki Woolz & Wares began its newest adventure and we haven’t looked back since that day! What changes have you seen over the years? We started our business as more of a side hustle and over the years it has grown to my full-time retirement dream job! What do you love most about your industry? Since my business encompasses a full circle of fun, from the treasure hunt of finding wool sweaters, product manufacturing and selling, I have to say that I truly enjoy the selling and meeting and talking with people at

art/craft shows the most! I get to do a little bit of everything with this business, and every day is spent planning and creating, and having the opportunity to sell my items at local fairs, shows and shops is truly a blessing. What message would you like to share with people? Believe in yourself, make goals every day, even small ones, crush them, admit your mistakes, and have a dream! Never give up! The beginning of a business is like sowing a seed you just have to keep working on it, it’s a commitment that you have to be willing to work on and work at hard every day! What would you like people to know about your business? “Wiki Woolz” makes fun wickedly warm wool mittens, hats and flower pins from vintage recycled wool sweaters! The “Wares” part, our custom shirts, hoodies and coozies are made to give the wearer/user a smile! When customers are shopping our coozies and I hear them laughing I always say it’s just like reading a card rack, you always know someone who each one reminds them of! Many of our designs are family inspired! I always tell people that I am living my dream running my business. We thank each customer for their purchase and remind them that their purchase allows me to continue to live my dream. What is the biggest compliment customers give you? The biggest compliment I receive is having customers who are so happy with their purchase that they continue buy more for friends and family. I don’t think there’s a bigger complement a business can get than to have customers continue to support you for years to come. We often have people stop in our booth at a show and say I love everything you sell, you make such fun things, that makes it all worth it! We love seeing customers wearing our apparel, it makes my heart happy!! So many of our customers have become friends and often just stop by a show or a fair to say hello, It’s not always about the sales it’s about the relationship that is formed between a customer and a small business owner. What are you most proud of? I am so proud of being able to share my entrepreneurial spirit with my grandchildren and seeing how much they enjoy spending time with me and working hard with me to continue making a Wiki Woolz & Wares a success! How many employees/family work with you? My entire family helps behind the scenes of Wiki Woolz &Wares! My husband, sons and daughter-in-law‘s, help when they can taking a shift at a show, loading and unloading, coming up with new ideas, and moral support!! We are blessed with six grandchildren and they all help. Often times you will see them working with me at a show, they love the production part of this business but they also love the selling side! They all get involved being models for our products and web presence! They all know our tagline, “Thank you for shopping Continued on page 18

local and thank you for helping my Mimi live her dream!” I’m blessed to have my friend Diane, who I’ve known for 48 years help me behind the scenes doing odd jobs from running errands, picking up supplies, stitching buttons, quality control, even bringing me a chai tea at a show, her moral support and love for my business is some thing I can’t even find words to thank her for. What are you most grateful for? I’m grateful for my family that supports me unconditionally and always has my back. I’m also very thankful for my customers who give me the opportunity to keep living my dream. Who can you credit your success? There are so many people that I need to give credit for my success. It goes right back to the very beginning roots of the Wiki Woolz, it’s been family! Family and friends have been and always will be the biggest component of the success of my business and I am forever grateful for their love and support. From my youngest grandson Lucas who tells me he can work the booth because he can read and do math, to the older grands Abby, Braeden, Molly, Nicholas and Sammie who help create and work the shows, my brother Paul who is my go to resource for any biz questions that come up, my brother John who texts me ideas for shirts and coozies, Christine and Diane who remind me its business not personal when hard decisions must be made, my husband

Jerry and sons Matt, Mark and daughter in laws Kimmie and Jenn who are always their to support me in anyway, to my 95 year old mom Oma, who stays involved offering shirt saying suggestions and everyone in between we are one blessed family business! Where are the places a customer can find the line you have created and sell. Do you sell wholesale? You can find Wiki Woolz & Wares online at getwikiwoolz.com. We ship or can do a porch pick up in Franklin. You can shop for Wiki Woolz at Pop’s Marketplace in Muskego, Serendipity Boutique Marketplace in Greendale, The Vintage Glass Garden in Milwaukee, and Over Easy Flipping in Plymouth. We do custom orders and have no minimums. Yes! We sell wholesale! We will be at the following shows for the remainder of 2021, Old World Christmas Market at the Osthoff in Elkhart Lake December 3-12, Noel Festival Milwaukee at the Expo Center/WI State Fair November 27, 2021 to January 2, 2022. What are some of the common myths you come across in your business? No one buys Wiki Woolz Mittenz in the summer! Actually they do, after all we live in Wisconsin, stick around the weather might change twice in one day! Wool is itchy! It is, however we line our mittenz and hats with fleece linings so the wool isn’t sitting directly on your skin! ~ Wiki Woolz www.getwikiwoolz.com 414-801-3950 or sales@loridomzil.com

Conversation Piece West Bend’s A Conversation Piece owners, Alicia Dineen and Mary Windall talk about Their business. How long have you been in business? We are excited to celebrate our 10 year anniversary on November 18th! How did you get started? The support from the businesses and community of West Bend combined with our individual passions is really what started it all! Alicia graduated with her degree in Interior Design in 2008 and Mary has had a lifelong passion for décor. We both love to take both trendy and unique pieces to make each of our houses a home and had a strong desire to take our interests and schooling to bring a home décor shop to downtown West Bend. The building where the shop is located came onto the market and we decided it was the perfect space to convert from residential to commercial. The location was fantastic and other strong, local businesses surrounded the building. We took the plunge in 2010 and spent the next year renovating the building to open just in time for the Christmas season in November 2011. What changes have you seen over the years open? The design trends have changed every year! Each season brings new styles, vendors and demand. We have seen everything from antique furniture to painted furniture, over the top “farmhouse” to minimalist décor, colorful decor to neutral décor and anything in between! Right now, the biggest trends are in mid-century modern design with light wood tones, florals and neutral rooms. We are always doing our research on what is trending in the design world Continued on page 30

and what our customers are asking for, including colors of the year, furniture styles and gift and décor items. What do you most Love about your Industry? We absolutely love the ever-changing décor and each year, start out with a new fresh look. The basis of our business is helping our customers to love the spaces they spend their time in. We love being able to help them design and create a space that they love, whether it be through Alicia’s on-site interior design services or through photos of problem spaces that a customer brings into the shop. What are some of the common myths you come across in your business? The biggest myth is that this is an easy career to have. We are fortunate to have our own business and doing what we love, but that also comes with always having the business on our minds. The time when our doors are open and we are helping our customers is only a small portion of what we do. There’s a lot of time spent when our “Open” sign isn’t on that we are making sure orders are placed, new products are priced and displayed, paperwork is organized and filed, and social media is up to date. Although it may not be easy, it’s truly a passion for us and we wouldn’t change a thing! What message would you most like to share with people? Since we first started our mother-daughter business endeavor, we’ve had different tastes in décor. We’ve always said that any two people should be able to walk through A Conversation Piece’s doors and find something that fits in their home. Over the last 10 years, we’ve found that we do like a lot of the same items but display them differently in our homes. What would you like people to know about your business? We work very hard to have unique products that you won’t find in a big box or chain store and strongly feel that small businesses like us are what will set your home apart from another home. Many of our customers have become great friends and we strive to get to know all of our customers, new or repeat, on a more personal level. What is the biggest compliment customers give you? It is music to our ears when someone walks through the door and “Ooooos” and “Ahhhhs” at all the items! This is especially true when we reset the shop for Christmas and the smells and look of the holidays take over every inch of the store. We start planning and ordering for Christmas in January, so it is on our minds all year long. When we finally get to reveal the store in full Christmas form, we love to hear our customers’ responses as they first walk through the door and take everything in! What are you most proud of? We feel very proud to be celebrating our 10-year anniversary. Retail is an ever-changing business to be in and we are proud that we have grown/ changed with the trends and demand. We have Continued on page 40

sweet P’ s PANTRY

Oconomowoc’s Sweet P’s Pantry’s owner, Sharon Pavich talks about her business. How long have you been in business? 10 years. How did you get started? By trial and error, I wanted to make the best toffee I could. I started with a recipe I developed, and decided to go into business with it. I rented a kitchen and sold my toffee at the Oconomowoc Winter Farmers Market. From there we accumulated enough business to open our own kitchen. What changes have you seen over the years open? People are more open to novel flavors. What do you most love about your Industry? The creativity with different ingredients and presentation and the little interactions with people and their stories about candy and childhood. As well as where they keep their secret stash! What are some of the common myths you come across in your business? That all candy and chocolate is the same. We use only natural ingredients and premium chocolate so,you get true and real flavors. What message would you most like to share with people? Persistence pays off! What would you like people to know about your business? That we love what we do, we love working with premium ingredients to produce the best possible products for your sweet tooth! found our niche in West Bend! How many employees/Family work with you? Mary and Alicia (mother and daughter) and one employee, Cathy. We also have family and friends who have helped in many ways throughout the years-from working the register to making apple cinnamon ornaments to hang on our Christmas bags. We couldn’t do it without each and every one of them! What are you most grateful for? We are most grateful for all the support through the pandemic. Having to close our doors was a very scary reality for us. Learning a new way of marketing and selling and the response from our loyal customers was extremely humbling. Who/what can you credit your success? We owe our success to our outstanding customers that return each season (sometimes many times) to decorate their homes, purchase gifts, or purchase paint for their furniture. We would not be here without them. We also thank our families who have been supportive and by our side since the beginning along with Cathy, our one and only employee, who has been our saving grace! This year, you can add to the fun with a new annual activity by creating a delightful dessert with the help of little ones and adults alike. With an easy recipe like Peanut Butter Saltine Candy that calls for just a handful of ingredients, you can get the whole family involved in the kitchen. Ask your little helpers to measure out ingredients while a grownup prepares the pan and uses the stove. Once the base is finished baking, call the kids back to sprinkle chocolate chips and peanut butter chips over the top. After your candy creation is cooled, just break it into pieces meant to be shared with the entire family. An added benefit: all can enjoy the nutrient-rich flavor of peanuts, which rise to superfood status by delivering 19 vitamins and minerals and 7 grams of protein per serving.

Peanut Butter Saltine Candy ~ Yield: 45 pieces Nonstick cooking spray (butter flavor) 1 sleeve (4 ounces) regular saltine crackers 1/2 cup butter 3/4 cup creamy peanut butter 1 cup granulated sugar 2 cups milk chocolate chips 1/2 cup peanut butter chips 1/2 cup rough chopped, dry roasted peanuts Preheat oven to 400 F. Line 10-by-15-by-1-inch pan with aluminum foil. Spray foil with nonstick cooking spray then lay saltines flat in single layer on prepared pan. Set aside. In heavy duty, 1-quart saucepan over medium heat, combine butter, peanut butter and sugar.

Stir constantly until butter and sugar are melted, bringing mixture to boil. Boil 3 minutes, stirring frequently. Pour cooked mixture over saltines and bake 5 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips over saltines. Let cool 3 minutes then spread melted chocolate completely over saltines. Sprinkle peanut butter chips evenly over chocolate. Return pan to oven 1 minute to soften chips. Pull pointed tines of fork through softened peanut butter chips to partially cover chocolate. Sprinkle chopped peanuts on top, gently pressing into candy. Let cool on rack about 15 minutes then place in freezer 3 minutes. Remove from freezer and break into pieces. Store in airtight container. ~
