At Home–Pretty in Pink

From Easter to Passover to the Kentucky Derby and beyond, there is a lamb dish for nearly every spring occasion. Today’s home cooks are forgoing the jar of mint jelly and using fresh mint in pesto and salsas, while serving their lamb medium-rare to preserve its tender juiciness.

The lush abundance of the flower garden is captured in this cheerful arrangement composed of everlasting florals, created by Monches Farm’s designer Sue Morgan.

Thrill of the

Hunt

in hartford Hen Picked Antiques & Stain Glass. Owners Debbie and Bob Wilhelm.

It all began in 1993 when we purchased an old farmstead and began restoration on the ca. 1906 farm house. Antiques were nothing more than old junk to us. That all changed with a simple invitation to go to a flea market with some friends. Not knowing what to expect, we tagged along. Much to our surprise, we purchased our very first antique, an old Eastlake pump organ which had been turned into a desk. That was it. That’s when antiques got into our blood. Before we knew it, we were getting up at the crack of dawn to go to sales, flea markets and auctions. The thrill of the hunt: It’s an addiction of sorts, though we prefer to call it a passion. We started selling a few pieces at an outdoor flea market. After spending one too many weekends under a tarp, trying to protect our wares from the rain, we decided to move the sale to our farmstead. In 2002, we started the restoration of our barn and began having barn sales. Each year we did a little more work on the barn, turning it into a antique shop. We hoped to have barn sales outside of the summer season. Then some buildings in Hartford became available for sale. We looked at a few of the properties, when both of us immediately fell in love with the Congressional Church of Hartford Our offer was accepted! On Easter Sunday 2016, we were honored to be guests at the very last of 163 years of church services held in our soon to be, new building. There are now two church pews in the front entryway that we made from the pew we sat in when we attended that last church service. We closed on the church purchase on March 31, 2016. Restoration work began almost immediately. ADA Code requirements created many challenges ahead. A new wheel chair ramp, gutting

and re-do of the bathroom, and a deluge of updating electrical work had to be done. Plaster walls were repaired and flooring was replaced. We also added tin ceiling tiles and antique 1920s ceiling fixtures to complete the restoration. We discovered that the windows in the tower were completely rotted through. They had to be completely restored. Each piece of glass was painstakingly removed, labeled and set aside until the frames were repaired and rebuilt. The main difference in the church inside is that instead of pews, there are antiques…and a fresh coat of paint. On the exterior, we added up lighting to the front of the church and relit the tower, WISCONSIN COUNTRY LIFE

which had been dark for 20 years. At night, you can see the tower from all over town. Between Bob being extremely handy, many friends in needed trades, and as helpers, we have been very blessed and are grateful for the huge amount of moral support throughout our remodeling journey. Hen Picked Antiques and Stained Glass is located at 108 Branch Street in Hartford. We offer an eclectic mix of antiques, collectibles, gift ware and gently used décor for your home and garden. We also provide stained glass repair as well as stained glass supplies and classes. For hours and information about classes go to www.henpickedantiques.com or 262-709-6198. Pretty in Pink The lush abundance of the flower garden is captured in this cheerful arrangement composed of everlasting florals. Monches Farm’s designer Sue Morgan has been creating floral art for over 25 years. She would be happy to work with you to create a custom piece for your home using your design colors and reflecting your personal style. Call her at Monches Farm at 262-966-2787 for a consultation.
