Pilgrim

Antique Mall

Owner Charlie Solomon talks about her business.

How long have you been in business? Pilgrim Antique Mall opened its door in September 1993. How did you get started? It actually started as a fluke. We owned an empty building. My husband Tom and our good friend Ken Roskopf decided it would make a great antique mall and off they went transforming it into what it is today. What changes have you seen over the years open? Change in product. Antique furniture sold like crazy in the 90s and more collectibles sell now. What do you most love about your industry? The love of the hunt especially finding an item that turns out to be extremely valuable. What are some of the common myths you come across in your business? There are a lot of reproductions out there and it confuses people. Everything with age is not antique.

Something for everyone, even the GUYS!

What message would you most like to share with people? To this day we still get a fair amount of customers that have never been in the shop. When they do come in they cannot believe what they see and what we have to offer. Rarely does any customer leave empty handed. What would you like people to know about your business? You can’t believe it till you see it. Our shop is amazing. We have very knowledgeable dealers who are always willing to help and share information. There are always new items to find and great prices. What is the biggest compliment customers give you? Customers always remark they are amazed at what we have to offer. Also how clean and well displayed and how friendly the dealers are. What are you most proud of? I am extremely proud of all the dealers WISCONSIN COUNTRY LIFE

in the shop. Some of them have been with us since we opened in ’93. They are all willing to help with any and all of the special events we have. They work hard to offer the customer a great shopping experience. How many employees/family work with you? We have a solid team of dealers who are always willing to step up to do whatever is needed. I have a manager, Karen Hartay, who is worth “gold” to me. There are 5 desk workers and all dealers help on weekends. Last, but not least, my husband Tom, who gets all the “man” jobs. What are you most grateful for? I am grateful for all the wonderful dealers I have had through this journey, and for all their hard work and friendship. Who/what can you credit your success? Success is achieved through a lot of hard work and the team you surround yourself with, especially Tom who has had my back from day one. n 13

Cherry Pickin’s

Home Furnishing Consignment

Owner Heidi Parlow talks about her business.

How long have you been in business? I have been owner of Cherry Pickin’s for 13 years and 5 years prior to that I was Value Furniture a store with all new furniture. How did you get started? For many years before I started Cherry Pickin’s, I dreamed about opening a Home Furnishings Consignment store. During the times I was running the furniture store I did a lot of research. When the city of West Bend took part of my property to widen Hwy 33, it took away my ability to get semi trucks to the loading dock. So I decided to start Cherry Pickin’s by advertising to my customer base asking for them to consign their furnishings, and began slowly turning the store to mostly consignment. I still do carry a line of upholstery made in Wisconsin that I can get in my store via a trailer load in the doors used to enter my store.

What changes have you seen over the years open? I have noticed through the years my items being consigned are better quality and higher end than when I started. What do you most love about your industry? I absolutely love my customers. I also like that you never know what’s is going to come in next, It’s fun to see all the different styles and items that are brought in. What message would you most like to share with people? You can create a great home by mixing the old with the new. And achieve a unique style of your very own. What would you like people to know about your business? Cherry Pickin’s offers consigners 60% of retail price. You can purchase new quality WISCONSIN COUNTRY LIFE

furniture made in Wisconsin, in stock or order your choice of fabric and style. What is the biggest compliment customers give you? They always compliment us on how everything is displayed and not messy. Some people don’t even realize right away that most of the items are pre-owned. What are you most proud of? I was told by many people that I would have a hard time making a living by selling used items. I am proud of my shops success. How many employees/family work with you? I am so grateful for my family and employees that help so much.. What are you most grateful for? Who/what can you credit your success? I love people and always strive to do what ever it takes to make them happy. n 21

Antiques Creating modern country style with antiques and flea market finds. This vaseline glass castor set is from the Victorian Era. It represents the unique, high quality pieces available to see, and purchase at The Pilgrim Antique Mall, located in Germantown, WI. Shown is a Retro example of Symmography, otherwise known as String Art. This piece is estimated to be from the late 60s to early 70s when this art form originated. It is usually made with an arrangement of colored thread, string, wool, wire or yarn between hammered nail points to form abstract geometric patterns. This framed owl shown is located in a booth at Antiques on Pierce in the Walkers Point area of Milwaukee, WI. This is a particularly high quality piece of Symmography, created on black leather, with what looks to be brass nails, and varying colors of wire to create this wise old owl image! Antiques on Pierce has over 50.000-sq.-ft. of antiques on 3 floors, with over 100 dealers offerings to choose from! All this is located at 1512 West Pierce, Miwaukee, WI, only one block North of National Avenue. Call 414-645-9640 or follow them on Facebook for more information. Open Daily, 10am-5pm.

Shown is only a couple pieces of the massive collection of 1940s and 50s Art Deco barware and other pieces that just arrived! These, and the whole collection can be viewed at Riverview Antiques, 2045 West St. Paul Ave. in the Historic Menomonee River Valley in Milwaukee. We Love

Antiques Creating modern country style with antiques and flea market finds. This Garden Bug pull toy was found at Fox Lake Country Antiques in Oconomowoc, WI. It is such a unique toy, never have seen before in our travels! It is in great working condition, estimated to be from the 1960s. All Springs are in tact and in great shape except one, making for a hilarious almost animated display when this toy is pulled by its attached cord. Some paint chipping exists, only characteristic to it’s age and use. This is a great representation of the rare finds you can expect to find at Fox Lake Country Antiques. Open 7 days a week from 10am-5pm. Find over 100 dealers, in 22,000-sq.-ft., all located at 201 North Fowler Street, in Oconomowoc, WI. Call 262-560-0890, check www.foxantiquemalls.com or follow on Facebook, for more information.

You love the Mid-Century modern look, you have the furniture, but now need to complete your room with accent pieces! One of the categories that the Mid Century Modern shop R Vintage and More excels at is the incredible, awesome lamp selection you will find! They carry pairs of lamps, individual lamps, hanging lamps, most with their original shades, many rewired if needed, but all in impeccable condition, like this one shown. This is one of a pair that is priced as and is available only as a pair of matching all original lamps. This lamp set is from the early 70s, and made of thick Glazed Ceramic with walnut finger bases and with the original shades. R Vintage N More is located at 2653 South Kinnickinnic Avenue in Milwaukee, WI. To learn more, call 414-243-1838 and follow them on Facebook for hours and more. Children’s Sprinkling Cans like the one shown are getting harder and harder to find in as good of condition as this one is. Because they were made of metal, and often left in sandboxes, at beaches (by saltwater in oceans),outside by gardens or in yards, being kids toys, most were ruined, or very rusted. Metal shovels, and pails suffered the same demise. This fun one with a cute scene was found at Antiques and Uniques in Downtown Waukesha. It is in original condition, still with the Woolworths price tag on the bottom! Antiques and Uniques is the home of over 75 quality dealer booths and 2 levels to explore! There is ample free parking by either of their 2 entrances, On Main Street, or the Riverfront. Call 262-844-1819 or check Facebook for more information. Open 7 days a week! WISCONSIN COUNTRY LIFE
