Silhouettes An American Tradition at Metropolitan Antiques & Gifts
Silhouette (profile) portraiture was a popular way for oneself or others to obtain an image or representation of a loved one without more expensive and sometimes unavailable portrait artists works prior to the invention and common use of photography. Professional and amateur artists would cut out or paint profiles as long as ago as 1500 thru 1860. Profiles can be painted on glass, plaster, or paper, or cut out of paper or even cloth– they truly are a microcosm of the society in which they reside, showing society’s views on social status and economics, commerce, travel habits, family values and inheritance, fashion (or utilitarianism), and other factors which wove the details of everyday life in every decade. Silhouettes were originally known as “profile”, “shade”, “shadow portrait” or “likeness”, the familiar word “silhouette” is taken from the French finance minister Etienne de Silhouette in the mid 1700s, who was rumored to cut profiles in his spare time. Silhouettes became very popular in America during the early 19th century. Painting or cutting profiles by hand may have been a skill, but when “machines” for tracing a clients face were developed, this ‘technology’ became the rage for inexpensive profile artists: they could impress their clients with the latest device. Whether the machine cast a client’s shadow on the wall, or traced the face’s shape, the late 1700s and early 1800s were filled with artists looking to gain clientele – and remove clientele from their artist rivals. With the heavy competition for portraits, even the name of the portraiture began to change – from its origins of “shadow portraits”, the common name, to the newly exotic name of profile portraits, “silhouettes”. Itinerant silhouette cutters traveled up and down the eastern seaboard advertising
in American newspapers and making likenesses of a wide variety of citizens in every walk of life. During the Victorian Era, it was a way for common people to inexpensively preserve an image of their loved ones. With the invention and more common use of photography came the demise of silhouette art. It remained useful in the rural areas, fairs and amusement venues until a resurgence came in the 1920s possibly as a renewed interest in the Arts and Crafts movement. Silhouettes are displayed in a variety of ways for example, framed under glass using dried flowers, colored backgrounds and a variety of decorative materials. Metropolitan Antiques & Gifts, owner Jody Schunke is the independent owner located at 259 West Main Street WISCONSIN COUNTRY LIFE

This solid bronze, 57 inches tall sculpture was created by Fredrick Remington, titled “Mountain Man.” When found it was in terrible condition, covered with tarnish, and soot. The owner of Country Lion Antiques, Bruce Gniot tediously restored this piece with a toothbrush and cleaner for over 6 hours to reveal this treasured beauty and Patina. It is available at Country Lion Antique Mall, located at 4330 South Howell Avenue, in Milwaukee, WI. Call 414-316-9985 for more information.
This large Children on Roller Coaster ride Sculpture is one of the last ones available, and is no longer made. Summer Punched Up
Side Ideas
for Backyard Entertaining
Backyard barbecues and family picnics are plentiful during the summer months, so chances are good you’ll host (or attend) at least one event this season. While you’ll likely feast on a bevy of hamburgers, hot dogs and summer salads, a menu filled with fresh, delicious sides makes for a meal worth celebrating. There’s certainly more than one way to create a menu for a casual backyard picnic, so it’s easy to plan dishes that everyone can enjoy. When organizing your menu, be sure to consider your guests and prepare a selection of side dishes that are both age-appropriate and satisfy a wide range of cravings. Here are some creative ways to put a twist on classic side dishes to make your meal memorable: Pasta medley. When you’re serving a group with kids, a simple pasta salad is a must-have side that even picky eaters will enjoy. Simply prepare your favorite noodles (fun shapes like spirals or bowties if you’re thinking kid-friendly) then add an array of ingredients like cubed cheese, olives, cherry tomatoes and broccoli florets with some extra-virgin olive oil. For a more grown-up flavor, combine feta cheese and bits of fresh basil with a drizzle of Bolthouse Farms Classic Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing for an extra kick of flavor. Naturally sweet treats. Many traditional sweet dishes are simply impractical for a hot summer day. As an alternative, something lighter can help satisfy a sweet tooth without the bulk of a heavy cake or pie. Try a mixed berry bowl with all your favorite seasonal fruits like fresh strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. It’s a cheerful presentation and an option all ages can enjoy. Add a few sprigs of mint for garnish for a little festive fun.
Crisp coleslaw salad. A refreshing salad is almost always a crowd-pleaser. Instead of a traditional tossed garden salad, try adding some crunch with a zesty coleslaw salad. This recipe uses all chopped vegetables, allowing you to help reduce food waste by choosing veggies that are not the most beautiful on the shelf, but still taste delicious. Try using an option like Bolthouse Farms Coleslaw dressing to make these veggies and coleslaw even more delicious by giving you the classic, tangy, creamy and sweet coleslaw taste you love with less fat and fewer calories than other refrigerated brands. Just pour, mix in with cabbage and enjoy. Another tip: balance your crunchy veggies with some sweetness, like bits of apple, pear, persimmon or nectarine, for a truly flavorful salad.
