Burlap

&Lace MARKETPLACE

Waukesha’s Burlap & Lace owners, Tami Evanoff and Gina Templeton talk about their business. How long have you been in business? Burlap and Lace Marketplace has been in business in Downtown Waukesha for 8 years. We have been under new ownership for 1 year now, located on W. Main St. in beautiful downtown Waukesha. We are still offering the same amazing selection of local artisans. How did you get started? When Burlap and Lace was started, the goal was to create a space where local artisans could come together under one roof to create a marketplace where customers can find unique, repurposed, upcycled, handcrafted, vintage finds. We also have a trendy clothing boutique as well. What changes have you seen over the years open? Over the past years we have seen a growth in the artisan community. Confidence is growing and artists are looking for a space to show off their craft. Customers want to support the local community and the small businesses in our area. What do you most Love about your Industry? We really enjoy being a part of the Downtown Waukesha area and having the ability to participate in the many events that are offered. We also love getting to know the vendors and the stories that are behind their small business venture. We love seeing the returning customers and getting to know them as well. It creates a small town, family atmosphere. What are some of the common myths you come across in your business? The most common myth that we come across in our line of business is that “home-made” should be cheaper. The reality is that home-made takes a lot of

time and expertise to create. Many vendors will spend hours perfecting their craft so that they can offer the best product to our customers. What message would you most like to share with people? Our biggest joy is our appreciation for each and every customer that comes through our doors to support our local artisans. We would encourage anyone who has not visited our store to explore the many unique hand-crafted items that we have to offer. Customers are always surprised at how large our store is. What would you like people to know about your business? Burlap and Lace is much larger than it looks like from the outside. We offer a beautiful front porch like setting to welcome you in. Then you are greeted with a large table and chandelier where there is a display that constantly changes to accent the season or holiday. Looking around the table you will see many wonderful items and beyond the front area, we offer 7,000-square-feet of wonder where vendors can set up their own displays to accent their hand-crafted items. So, plan on spending a bit of time looking around! What is the biggest compliment customers give you? One of the most heard compliments we hear is how unique our store is. We offer such a large variety of items. Customers come from many of the surrounding towns to visit our store and often they bring visiting family members with them. What are you most proud of? One of the things that we are most proud of is our customers that return faithfully to support the vendors in our store. How many employees/Family work with you? We have over 100 vendors that all work together to make the store a success. When we are open for a local event, you will find many vendors all coming together in the store to help with customers and serve the local community. It is a great time to meet vendors and learn more about their stories and their craft. What are you most grateful for? We are very grateful for a growing community that wants to make our downtown Waukesha area a place that visitors want to come to. Every season there are events to draw our community together making the atmosphere very family friendly. We are also grateful for each other as partners as we continue to work to make our store a place that people want to come to. Who/what can you credit your success? We credit our success to the local community and the variety of artisans that all come together to make our store the kind of place that you’ll want to visit. ~ Burlap & Lace Marketplace ~ 272 W. Main St., Waukesha, WI

The Great American Main Street Ripon‘s downtown is a three-time semifinalist of the Great American Mainstreet Award. Tremendous improvements accomplished over time enhance the Ripon downtown–helping make it an historically revitalized city that serves as the community’s central area of business, gatherings and entertainment. Dozens of businesses have established themselves in Ripon–a place that’s easy to be a business owner. No wonder Ripon’s downtown vacancy rate is only 7 percent. Through the years, many redevelopment

projects have boosted assessed property values from $7.3 million in 1998 to more than 18.7 million in 2012, amounting to more than $14 million in public and private investment. Ripon Main Street has lent a helping hand to projects including the Watson Streetscape renovation; implemented an aggressive business recruitment and retention campaign; and created innovative promotions such as the Ripon Summer Concert Series, Dickens of a Christmas, Septemberfest, and Watson Street Farmer’s Market.

What do you most Love about your Industry? Meeting new people and being able to share knowledge back and forth. It’s also a constant learning experience from researching many different items. What are some of the common myths you come across in your business? Many people think we get our merchandise for free. We buy most of the items we sell and if anything is donated, the proceeds go to the Hunger Task Force. Also, specialty and designer items will be sold at thrift store prices. What message would you most like to share with people? You’ll always find much higher quality than ”new“ merchandise, and if you’re looking for something in particular, .always ask if you don’t see it. We may have it off site, or be able to help you find it. How long have you been in business? Ten years independently in Bay View, many more in antique mall spaces.

The Elegant Farmer’s award-winning Apple Pie Baked in a Paper Bag features mounds and mounds of perfectly steamed, incredibly juicy Ida Red apples make our sugar-cookie like top crust positively bulge. Baked in a paper bag makes the top crust uniquely crunchy while keeping the traditional bottom crust amazingly light and flakey, a hallmark of the best old-fashioned pies. The delicate, sugar cookie-like top crust and hearty sweet-tart apples combine to make for simply the best pie ever according to three generations of fans who acclaim the Elegant Farmer’s Apple Pie Baked in a Paper Bag as the “best apple pie in America.” Available at The Elegant Farmer’s Farm Kitchen Bakery, Deli and Market, 1545 Main Street, Mukwonago, WI or online at www.elegantfarmer.com.

Fruity Flavors Fresh fruit is finally in season. When the sun is out and kids are hitting the pool, it’s also time to indulge in some sweet fruit flavors. Watermelon, berries, bananas and more can all be found near perfect ripeness at grocery stores or farmer’s markets during the warm summer months. On a hot day, there is almost nothing better than trying something new that sounds delicious. Throw your apron on, prepare your kitchen and get baking. If you’re craving something sweet with no ideas where to start, try this sweet Lemon Cheesecake with Fresh Fruit. It’s tangy and rich, and allows you to escape to the summer oasis of your dreams, at least for a few minutes. It has the smooth, creamy texture of cheesecake mixed with a hint of tart lemon juice. Topped with raspberries, mint and oranges, the burst of fresh fruit enhances the cheesecake flavor. It’s the perfect sweet treat for summer for people of all ages with its bright colors and varying flavors. In a bowl, mix graham cracker crumbs, sugar and melted butter then press into a springform pan.

WE LOVE ANTIQUES Creating modern country style with antiques and flea market finds.

Country Lion Antiques is where we found this beautiful chalk ware fish bowl holder. Most likely this was a prize won at a fair or festival. It dates back to the 1930s and is in excellent condition, considering it’s age! Behind the fish bowl, is the original electric cord, which lights up the light bulb, illuminating the fish bowl. The Fishing boy chalkware figurine is accompanied by his dog, ducks that he hunted, along with a rabbit by his feet. Country Lion Antiques is located at 4330 South Hoewll Ave., Milwaukee. 414-316-9985. Open Mon.-Fri., 10-6; Sat., 10-4 & Sun., 10-3.

Here are two beautiful primitive ship Items for your consideration. One is a wonderful oil painting from the early to mid 19th century. As you can see it has had a rough life but the painting itself is extremely well done. The other is a 20th century carved mahogany tall ship with wonderful detail in the carving. These two are just waiting to find the right cottage by the lake. Both can be viewed at Riverview Antiques, 2045 West St. Paul Ave. in the Historic Menomonee River Valley in Milwaukee. Call 414-278-9999 or check www.RiverViewAntiqueMarket.com for more information.

This Slot Machine is from a Wisconsin Casino, and dates back to the mid 1980s-early ’90s. It accepts quarters, and is in great working condition. Formerly, gaming machines were mainly operational by pulling the handle down to activate a play, now most slot machines are “button pushing” electronic operation. Most of this type of machine play is being eliminated, and create the availability of relics like this one to become available for “man caves”, rec rooms, and collectors.
