Here’s a wonderful older woven splint fishing creel. It is in excellent condition and retains the original leather shoulder strap. More than likely from the late 1800s early 1900s. The unique wood lid has a 9''ruler attached to the top. This measures 9"" long by 4 1/'' at the base. It is about 6 1/2'' tall at the back. Fine condition with excellent color. Hard to find them this old and nice! Available at Pardeeville Antique Mall, located at 103 Industrial Drive, Pardeeville, WI. They are open 7 days a week, 10am-4:30pm. Eclectic
Avenue
Port Washington’s Eclectic Avenue’s owner, Charlene Riedel talks about her business. How long have you been in business? I opened my brick and mortar store here in Downtown Port Washington mid-August 2017 How did you get started? What inspired you to open your business? When a storefront would go up for rent, I would think “someday” with a list of reasons why not now. After changes in my career left me feeling unfulfilled, I thought there was never a better time to follow my dream of owning my own shop. Coming from a career of helping others, I knew that was at the heart of what my business would be centered around. I wanted to help people be well, have natural alternatives to conventional therapies, such as the use of essential oils, natural bath and body and provide things that could be of help spiritually-healing crystals, oracle cards, books and items for sacred rituals-sage, herbs, oil blends. Additionally I have always had a passion for collecting antiques, decorating and creating things. I would be outside decorating the house for Christmas and people would come up to me and ask if I had my own shop or did storefront displays for a living, the same when guests enter my home. With so many things I wanted to offer, it just made sense to call the shop Eclectic Avenue- you never know what you will find when you visit!
WISCONSIN COUNTRY LIFE Summer 2022
13
Eclectic Avenue What changes have you seen over the years open? An increase in exploring spirituality, natural alternative therapies and prioritizing self care along with upcycling, purchasing vintage and supporting small business. What do you most Love about your Industry? I love helping others and being able to offer so many options for people’s individual paths of healing, self discovery and unlimited potential. The relationships that have been formed in doing so have been rewarding in knowing that I helped to make a difference in someone’s life whether it’s something spiritual or something nostalgic that brings back happy memories. What are some of the common myths you come across in your business? It looks easy-I could do that! Unless you have owned your own brick and mortar business, nobody truly has an idea of just how much time, effort and hard work goes into creating the beautiful shop they see. What message would you most like to share with people? I love what I do and put my heart into everything! I am very grateful for all the relationships and friends I have made along the way with my loyal customers and community. When visiting my shop, I want your experience to be unique, happy and know that I appreciate you all so much. What is something you “Specialize in?”
14
The shop specializes in local artists, spiritual and metaphysical items along with crystals, fair trade, upcycled items, vintage and so much more. We are truly “Eclectic”! With our additional space that opened in Late 2021, we are planning to provide classes and a place to connect with others. We even do some paranormal “hunts” from time to time!
What would you like people to know about your business? We have so many unique items! From rocks to vintage and everything in between. Something for almost everyone and everyone’s budget. If you are looking for the unusual, hard to find or nostalgic we’ve got you covered! We have the most amazing, talented artisans that bring such a special touch to the shop. What is the biggest compliment customers give you? “This is my favorite place!” when walking through the door and the excitement of showing their friends and family around who are here for the first time. Customers who say “thank you for choosing our community to have your
WISCONSIN COUNTRY LIFE Summer 2022
shop in” The visitors from out of town tell me how happy they are that I am still here with all the economic turmoil that’s going on and make sure they stop every time they are in town. The feeling of being calm and relaxed when they walk in. The shop gives them good vibes and feels peaceful. I have an immense amount of gratitude and am very humbled by it all. What are you most proud of? The dedication I have to provide an exceptional customer experience and the hard work I’ve done and will continue to do to always improve on that. I am proud to be a part of the Port Washington community. I am very grateful and blessed to be a part of it all. How many employees/Family work with you? It’s mainly myself running the shop. My husband, mom and sister and 2 sons and friends help a lot behind the scenes. What are you most grateful for? I am grateful for this opportunity to serve others and all of the support from everyone. Who/what can you credit your success? I could not do this without the support of family, friends, and my customers. Life’s experiences have also allowed for the knowledge to always move forward, not be afraid to leap into the unknown and the skills to do so. ~

BACK PORCH
gatherings Ripon’s Back Porch Gatherings owner, Tammy Gutierrez talks about her business.
How long have you been in business? I have been in business, continually, since 1987. I started out buying and selling at flea markets, learning as I went. I eventually started renting spaces at antique malls, building up a customer base. Then, in 1998, opened my first brick and mortar. How did you get started? I actually started loving old things as a child. My mother and grandmother would clean out closets and drawers, and try to get rid of things they didn’t want. Well, I wanted anything old! Thats what started this whole thing! I had collections of sea shells my grandfathers collected while they were in the war. I looked at them everyday. I loved natural things for their beauty. I loved old items for the history I saw in them. New things didn’t appeal to me. What changes have you seen over the years open? In this business, there is constant change. Trends in home decor change so often. The one thing that remains constant, to me, is that people love well made things. You get that from antiques and vintage items. Ironstone dishes that last 200 years. Furniture with dovetails so drawers don’t fall apart with use. Quality never goes out of style. I love that. What do you most Love about your Industry? I love making people happy with their found treasures! In our store. We rarely have two of anything! We have unique, one of a kind or antique pieces that no one else has. When someone loves their purchases, it makes my day. What are some of the common myths you come across in your business? One common myth I hear from new customers is that they thought antiques couldn’t be cool. After coming through our shop, we hear “cool shop” over and over. We make old new again. Every home can use a great piece of well made furniture with the perfect patina. It will ground your room and make it alive!

Back Porch Gatherings What message would you most like to share with people? I would love for people to know that our shop is different every time they visit. We add new old merchandise daily and we are always striving to make your visit an experience. What would you like people to know about your business? I would love for people to know that we are a family run business and strive for an excellent customer experience. What is the biggest compliment customers give you? The biggest compliment I have heard from customers is that they are surprised we are in a small town. We have heard we would do so well in Chicago or Nashville. We are proud to be a part of a charming, peaceful small town. What are you most proud of? Our team consists of myself and my oldest son, Dan, full time. My daughter, Alexis, and my youngest son, Ernie Jr. (Cowboy) for winewalks, events and deliveries. My husband, Ernie, is our Scrooge for Dickens of a Christmas in December. My two cousins work various days and my adorable mom is a picker! Definitely a family run business. What are you most grateful for? I am most grateful for my customers. Many have become friends now. Some have been with me since the 90’s. They supported our us during covid and I cannot say enough about the relationships we have with them. You’ll hear laughter, very often, in our shop! Who/what can you credit your success? Honestly, I credit my supportive family for my success. You know, we all have a dream. Mine was to have a home décor store. but they supported me. My father built my checkout counter and a work bench for me to do dried flower arrangements and wreaths. My mom painted furniture and was first in line at every estate sale. My son Dan told me we could go big, opening a 2,800-square-foot store, when I was unsure. Without the support of my family, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I am so grateful to them all. ~ Back Porch Gatherings 217 Watson Street, Ripon WI, 54971 backporchgatherings@yahoo.com 920-707-7026

AEppelTreow is an artisan cidery and distillary using local crops to make draft hard ciders, orchard table wines, sparkling, aperitif and unique Wisconsin spirits. This is a family run winery that uses regionally grown fruit. They produce elegant fruit wines using a hand intensive philosophy. Their specialty is a sparkling apple wine, traditionally made from a blend of apples our ancestors knew-Russets and Pippens, Codlins and Crabs.
