11th regional Session of EYP Latvia
#2
Editorial A beautiful sunset brings the last day of the session and the last issue of the paper. The session was a challenge for every participant and now, that it comes to an end, we all start to feel nostalgic, for no reason apparently. It is the so-called Post EYP Depression. But don’t worry, there is a cure for it: another EYP Session. All the great experience is already waiting for you to come back. Yours, Andreia&Filips
P.S.: If you miss the session and the people after you get home just scan the barcodes with your phone. They will take you straight to the session’s Twitter account or Video Blog. You can download the application from: http://qrcode.kaywa.com. Until then, Enjoy the paper!

A busy day of
Commitee Work The whole day was pretty much filled with intensive discussion along with some games, points, post-its, ideas, stories and the inevitable 5-yearold act-outs. CULT I started with an Abigail story and kept on going by mostly Defining, Phrasing, R e - G roupi n g and Debating. MeanwhileECON and AFET took some time redecorating each
other’s rooms and then carried on with pretty much brainstorming, talking and phrasing. The chairs from CULT II, on the other hand, stated that their committee is almost chairing itself and their work is becoming really easy since they only have to make sure that they delegates stick to the topic. AFCO was very active on
discussing the pro’s and con’s of lowering the voting age to 16 years, also the chair of ECON Fabian Sommer took his time to talk about voting age and the debate that goes on this topic in his homeland, Austria. CULT I and LIBE were a bit behind schedule and needed some interference but all in all had productive committee work. DROI,

also known as the femalecommittee, was getting along well and stayed on schedule. As always there were delegates with high, medium and low p ar t icip at ion during in committee work but at the end of the day everyone had a say in putting together the resolution and it turned out to be a productive day full of solutions.
“Aaah, my eyes!” This was the sound that Kaarle and Edgars heard as they were wandering trough the empty corridors. For obvious reasons Edgars and Kaarle didn’t enter the room where the screaming was coming from and moved on hastily. Soon they met a bunch of harmless looking delegates, who had decided to enjoy a bit of wilderness by sleeping in the corridor. Even the video editor Guntars had found a place beside them while
they were playing the game “maffia”. In spite of the late hour and the amount of work that had been done during the day, some anonymous people found energy in themselves to engage in scientific discussions with the use of the chalkboard. As the reporters advanced through the schoolhouse, they found themselves in front of a whiteboard filled with magnificent urban art. The later the hour, the more bizarre scenes were happening. For example, the
reporters spotted a delegate who had collected 5 mobile phones and an iPod by her bed. Suspicion was caused when a whole committee room was discovered to be empty. What’s not common for the EYP spirit is that the dance floor had such a lack of people as the lack of humour in the late night jokes of the press team. All in all, the night was rather quiet, thus giving the opportunity for a crazy night in the near future.

Yesterday a streetball championship took place in Cēsu 2. Pamatskola, it was a part of the LatgaleVidzeme Regional session. The competition was high, games were extremely passionate. Fans cheered for their teams, and the atmosphere was intense. The fans had the chance to see the world through the eyes of wild

In teams as well as amongst fans there were many people who had travelled great distances, in order to join this magical event live. We managed to have an conversation with the team that proved wor-
The lack of creativity or bravery is definitely not a characteristic of this session. Euroconcert which took place in the school hall is brilliant evidence of that. Even couple of dancing, extremely gifted and sparkling African elephants could not be more exciting, funny and surprising! Each committee had prepared unique performances which consisted of singing, dancing, joking and basically showing their endless imagination and talents. Despite the fact that delegates had to spend a lot of time doing teambuilding which means they had almoust no preparation to establish their per-
thy of being called the champions of the LVRS 2012 streetball cup. Their names are Andris, Santa and Rihards. When asked what was their secret, they answered the emotional boost received from Santa was essential to their success. In their acceptance speech they emphasised that without the organisers they would have never
formances, they managed to deal with this issue very well. This is a nice example of real EYP spirit. The officials gave a lot of joy to the audience with their very musical performances. The absolute highlights of the evening were in advance prepared individual performances shown by some gifted EYPers. There was a matchless opportunity to enjoy numbers of delegates, chairs, journalists and orgas. It would be a crime not to mention the hosts of the evening, lovely and charming Sabīne and the incredibly amazing Estonian with a strong voice Kaarle. The sound of his catchy phrases
achieved such glory. They celebrated their victory by writing speeches, and ascending academically. With tears in their eyes they say that they feel truly blessed and that their only aspiration is that people would believe in themselves and pursue their dreams.
EYPers perform in Cesis was simply unforgettable. Euroconcert is one more very important part of any EYP session. This particular one was a celebration of fun, friendship and talent. In short, you should have been there!

Embracing European cinema
enormous budgets allow professionals, A-list stars and grand visual effects blow audiences mind. However simplistic the scenearios might be, Hollywood blockbusters are entertaining and that is a fact you can´t overlook when buying films for cinemas. Whereas most Hollywood films attract a wide audience, European author cinema is more of a film-makers own selfexpression, which like any other kind of art often doesn´t reach masses. Art-house cinemas that specialise in offering local and european films usually have to face the fact that a lot of screenings
will be shown to empty or half-empty halls and ticket-sales can´t pay the rent, so they often need private funding of some kind. Another outlet for European cinema includes the festivals, most famous taking place in Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Karlovy Vary etc. As a volunteer at a film festival for the past couple of years, I have seen that a lot of people actually enjoy author and independent cinema when they have some guidance. They don´t buy the ticket because they are scared that they might be dissapointed if the film is too abstract or disturbing in some way. At festivals, special programmes and
staff make it easier for festival-goers to find suitable films. Also, it is easier for talented newcomers to make themselves shown at festivals. I am happy to see that every year there are more people willing to experience the more sophisticated films. Just to give you a proof of the quality of European film industry this year two wonderful european films „The Artist“ , a beautifully made black-and-white silent masterpiece and „Iron lady“ with the amazingly talented Meryl Streep received 7 Oscars altogether.
Does a hinduism follower in a prison in Latvia has the right to receive food accordingly to his religious beliefs? Inhabitant of the prison in Jelgava, Sergey Ososkov, says yes. He has already won the first trial, however more trials are about to follow. The prisoner, Sergey Ososkov, is sentenced for seven years. The crime he is sentenced for is drug dealing. His name has also been used when referring to a murder in
2001. When you first hear it, the situation can be quite comic, considering the fact that a possible murderer wants to have a proper vegetarian meal. From the human rights perspective it is totally correct, that prisoners have their rights. However, they have committed a crime of a serious nature and making them feel in prison like in a vacation might not be the right de-
cision. The prisoners are fed three times a day and the food is more than eatable. Plus, they can earn money and visit a prison store. Moreover, if things go too far and it is not clear where to set the limit between what rights should and should not the prisoners have, the situation may lead to an ironic result. Righteous Latvian citizens might want to commit a crime just to get into prison, where food, beds and work are provided by the country and you have to do a lot less to survive. All in all, the
prison situation in Latvia is theoretically correct, but practically you never know when it might create problems in the future.
It is weird how you can forget about your presence, both in space and time. As if your soul was slowly slipping away into the abyss of inexist-
ence. The worst part is the drifts, as I like to call them. Time periods of incomprehensible duration, when your body is physically there but everything else is gone. There are no perceptions. As if your mind had teleported into a different Universe and left the body and the consciousness behind. It is almost like sleeping but not nearly as effective. The mind timelessly flies around like a limp ethereal body in space, in the absence of gravity. And then suddenly your focus is back from an ocean of dead thoughts. How
long will this moment of clarity last? Forever? Nope, gone again. It briefly resurfaces, only to go on a longer journey this time. What is the destination? No idea. Where am I? Where is my mind? I have not actually told you the worst part yet. There is no medicine. You can consume all the caffeine in the world but this will only postpone the cruel reality. If you do not want to experience this anguish, you must have enough sleep. You should not miss out on the fun, but to be able to tell the line between fun and hysterical sleep-deprivation is the key.

Mind-reading During a session, most of the participants do not really pay attention to where they are staying at, what they eat or how they get from one place to another. Still, in order for the session to actually happen there have to be a couple of people making sure that these things exist. In our case these people are Daniels and Reinis. Daniels Griņevics is 18 years old and originates from Riga, Latvia. He is a senior student at Riga Centre Language School and plans on studying law at Riga Graduate School of Law. He has a sister and he enjoys spending his free time doing sports with a slight preference in basketball. Reinis Tutāns is also 18 years old and from Riga, Latvia. He is also a

senior student at Riga Centre Language School and he is planning on studying marketing at Stockholm School of Economics. He has a brother and he also enjoys sports with cycling being his favorite one. Well, you may have noticed that the previous two paragraphs are pretty similar. That, is because Reinis and Daniels are really good friends, up to such a point that the title of the article actually applies to the bond that they have developed. They have known each other since they were six years old and they have reached a place where the one just knows what the other one is thinking about just from a glance. They also happened to be in the same committee during their first EYP session. Their committee was
not doing very well and after a certain point it was clear that they had to assume the leading roles. Their contribution to the resolution was, in fact, quite more impressive than that of any other delegate and at the end of the day they were, basically, writing the clauses just by completing each other’s thoughts. Their actual quote for the moment was: “That was the moment we fell in love with EYP!”. To most of you they are probably just busy people running around. But they are actually the reason this session is happening. A friendly smile or a pad on the shoulder will definitely help them through the storm.

INTERVIEW
In 1951 an organisation called CISV (Children International Summer Villages) was created. The main goal was and still is to involve people of all ages into programmes, help them make projects and to inspire action for a more fair and peaceful world. It is based on voluntary work and one of the volunteers is our very own 17 year old Lūcija Bergere from LIBE. As we
were sitting in the hallway and talking about CISV we both realised it is quite similar to EYP, since both are bringing different cultures together. There are over 60 countries involved in it and all projects have topics significant to the society. Lūcija tells me about her own experience and history in the organisation and it is very inspiring to listen to her speak about it so pas-
sionately. Her first experience with a CISV programme was 6 years ago when she was 11 years old. Since then she has been one of the active members and today she is in the board, responsible for juniors (11-25 year olds). „I feel like it brings out the best of me and I always find interesting people to connect with,“ says Lūcija when I asked her why she enjoys it, „the organisation stands for what I believe in. I’ve learned how to plan, organise projects, while I developed my personality”. Lūcija reminded me how much I love EYP and how far I want to go with it. Keep up the good work, Lūcija!

They came from a land called AFETopia and a task was burdened upon them by the mighty rulers of the land, Fillipa and Kristaps. The tasks were simple: find the holy 1000 year old Wim and assume its habits to eventually find eternity. The first thing they had to do was collect 20 rainbow socks, 10 rectangular objects and present them to the ever-mumbling receptionist who would give them directions to Wim’s cave. Upon arrival, they encountered a mighty, magical microphone that kindly asked them to sing Twinkle, Twinkle little star in Greek, if they wished to advance. The second level of security was a dial pad, in which they had to dial the shoe sizes of all the organisers in order to enter the cave. Carrying on, they en-

countered a monster blocking their way, but courageously they were able to defeat it by using their bodies to form a fearsome creature with 7 legs, 6 arms, 4 heads, 2 horns and a tail. As soon as they found him, the one and only thing Wim demanded was entertainment. But still, even after performing the mindblowing Clothes Swap and Shout, he was not happy. Our mighty travelers had only one choice. They introduced Wim to Heidy, the lovely Skype squirrel, and surprisingly he was pleased and revealed his secret concerning eternity. No matter how hard I tried I could not find out the secret as I was one sock short. So, if you see an AFETopian, all you can do is ask and there is an actual chance you will live STORIES forever!

Fellow delegates Santa Kizikova, the Vice-President and Beāte Grīviņa, the head of the Committee on Culture shared with us in an interview their experience. Even though EYP never seemed like something they might like, since it sounded serious and had the potential to be boring, they decided to give it a chance. ”Look where I am now,” Santa exclaims. Being in RSP has made both of the girls more outgoing as they claim they were extremely silent before they joined, but now they have obviously changed. Also, time management has improved extremely so both of them agree that RSP has changed their lives significantly and they cannot wait to see what impact EYP will have on their lives.
EYP
The beggining
Everything has its beginning. That beautiful starting point where standing still turns into movement. Once it has begun it will never stop. And even when life and obstacles will change that something will keep on being in your life. Maybe it will not be the action itself but through the all gained experience, met people and inspiring memories it will forever stay in your life. The starting point is the most important one because without it there will no chance for all the following events to happen. Fascinated by the idea of the magical moment of beginning I asked some people how they got involved in EYP. Juris Gogulis: „Someone told me.” I must say it is incredible luck to have so well informed people around you. This system could even be improved by providing these extremely knowledgable people with access to all kind of information sources. Who knows what other fantastic information they will find out about? And do not hesitate to become one of them and share your knowledge with others. That is certainly regarded as good behaviour. You might even receive some extra help from higher power in your life as a reward. Evija Taurene: „I was very active and somehow just ran across information about EYP.” And again luck proves to play a vital role. Everything is connected in life. Effort is awarded by life itself. When a person knows what he or she wants and does a lot to satisfy ambitions, good things just tend to appear in life. In other words, the right things find right people. But it is necessery to realise that it is up to everyone individually to use the Ieva Pastare and Kaarle Varkki: „We just wanted to get some free food!” In general food is wonderful and free food is always a pleasure. But if it is the one and the only reason for participating in something better do something else. But in this particular situation no doubt that there was an enormous amount of other reasons. STORIES
The History of Hemp
Until the 19th century, 80% of all paper in the world was produced from hemp fiber. Hemp paper was used to print bibles, newspapers and even money. The most distinguishable hemp paper “achievement” is definitely the American declaration of independence, which was written on hemp paper. First car ever built by Henry Ford ran on hemp gasoline but unfortunately it could not be produced more widely due to the alcohol prohibition, since the US government considered bio-fuel as alcohol and taxed it accordingly. 1 Ha of hemp can produce 4.1 times more cellulose (basic ingredient of paper) than 1 Ha of trees. It also processes 3 times more CO2 than trees in equal conditions. And while it takes years to grow a forest, industrial hemp matures in 12–14 weeks. The beginning of illegalisation lies in the USA which was the first country to forbid the use of hemp. One of the biggest supporters of this policy was William Randolph Hearst. He owned a newspaper industry through which he started to diminish the “satanic marijuana”, and soon enough the population of the US started to believe that marijuana is the cause of all their problems. Of course, in the propaganda the name marijuana was used only to hide the fact that it is actually hemp. Now that you know all of this, I hope that the next time someone says hemp you do not automatically think of weed, stoners and hippies, but also of the vast potential of industrial hemp. Even so, industrial hemp has very low in THC (the narcotic chemical) levels and there is no way of creating drugs from it.

Jokes
You’ve probably heard about the so called “your mama” jokes. The maternal insult has become a quite common thing.Whether you like is or not you must admit that it is a part of our society. Hell, even Shakespear has used a maternal insult! Did you know that historically the origins of “your mama” jokes were found in Africa? Later on These games gained popularity in African-American cultures as well. The game which originated was called the dozens. The Dozens is a “pattern of interactive insult” existing in low, middle, and upper class African Americans, among males and females, children and adults. Frequently used topics among players who “play the Dozens” are one’s opponent’s lack of intelligence, ugliness, alleged homosexuality, cowardice, poor hygiene, exaggerations of physical defects, such as crossed eyes and of course, the opponents mother. It is a contest of personal power: wit, self-control, verbal ability, and toughness Nowadays “Your mama” jokes have become famous thanks to MTV and other social media, thus making them popular in the entire world. This results in people adapting and creating new types of jokes. These jokes might not even start with the phrase “your mama”. They can be mixed up with other types of jokes like “that’s what she said”, “if you know what I mean” and others. This way the jokes become more dynamic and add more diversity in the “Yo mama” niche. Now that you have the knowledge base of “your mom” here are some valuable tips. • Have an original joke (don’t do the nuttella blood group joke again!) • Know which person can accept the joke (It probably isn’t a good idea to tell Your mama joke to your mom) • Excessive use of these jokes may result in nosebleeds and having no friends! • Be tactical (don’t use these jokes on your friend’s mother’s funeral. Even these kind of jokes have their etiquette) • Innovate (what style can you choose? Singing a song, drawing a picture, or taking a video? The possibilities are endless) All jokes aside, I wish you to always love your mothers. They are great women who have raised you with love and care, so when coming back from the session, don’t forget to give them a big hug!
DO YOU KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOURS?
There are all sorts of different people around Europe. Different cultures, habits and beliefs. People that can make you laugh, cry or even piss you off to your limits. But how well do you think know them all?
• Germans: They are actually the first ones presented, since they are so punctual they arrive everywhere first. • The Dutch: always happy and cheerful! Is it just their personalities or is there something more to it? • Estonians: If you say a joke and hear a person laugh to it 5 minutes later, he probably lives a bit to the north of Latvia. • Latvians: Which country sells the most extra toes on e-Bay? The one looking like a horse head! • Austrians: You meet a normal person, but then you look downwards and: Oh, the ugliness!! Flip flops with socks! • Turks: Put on you turban and get your bargain face! We’re going to Istanbul for carpets and kebabs! • Finnish: Polar bears for pets, vodka all over the place and depressing heavy metal music. Feels like Finland, all over again! • Swedish: Tall, blond, naked, blue-eyed girls riding polar bears and eating meatballs. • Cypriots: Apparently they live in a country, somewhere over the rainbow, floating in the Mediterranean. • Polish: In their country you can trade your mother for a bottle of vodka. Plus, they have more apples than Steve Jobs. • Greeks: The last place is honorably theirs since, they are almost always late and don’t even care. They once could afford a golden statue of Zeus. Very odd choices for a lovely person like you. Either you are a monster on the outside or simply in denial. If you actually DO think you look like a monster, go ask a random official or fellow delegate „How do I look today?“. If they say OK they are probably lying and you might have a problem but if they say things like ’pretty’, ’cute’, ’smashing’, ’hot’, the classical ’beautiful’ or anything above ’OK’ then honey.. you have nothing to worry about.
