ARCHITECTURE

Giorgio Grassi.

EXTRA

One of my passion is Photography: it freeze moments and emotions. When possible I go out with my Reflex Camera and tripod finding the place and the moment for a specific photographic idea. I love also stars and astro photography especially in summer, that is the perfect moment to see the milky way. As sports I do running and functional training three times a week, but in summer I like swim and run every day to keep me healthy. SELECTED PROJECTS

London Library: Mobius Tech-A

The city of London is one of the most intense and heterogeneous capitals of the world: A place where everything fits. From the dark industrial revolution to modern architecture, the city has managed to absorb the different times by accumulation and juxtaposition. Life in London has been narrated through time by a lot of English authors that, such as Dickens, described the tangible and intangible even more eloquently than a map of the city from that period. The Project start from the Archmedium students Competition, proposing the creation of a new public library for the city of London. Located in the financial district and near the Thames River, we suggest the creation of a place where culture, history and technology interlace to generate activity in the

London of the 21st century. In the financial district, on the banks of the Thames River, the new library is established as an entity of public and collective use, in a way that reflects the values of today´s society. The architectural exercise has the purpose to work both at an global and territorial scale, defining a system able to connect and characterize the waterfront of Southwark in London, both at the architectural scale, with a public library which finds its reasons in the context, critically interpreting the surroundings and together being part of the system at the larger scale. The reading and description of the city and on the historical traces was conditioned by the suggestion of a broadening of the Thames River and of the subsequent definition of a

system that occupies extensively all residual open spaces of the waterfront. The system is made up of a longitudinal linking element, some transverse structural elements and some anchorage on the river, responding to the different spatial condition of the waterfront. The architectural elements fits in this system becoming itself a structural linking device, starting from the regulative form of the bridge and the spiral. The library components are a technological wall, containing and generating knowledge, and an open cube with a descendant spiral, linked to rooms and facilities, sustained by a set of giant order pillars. Divine Comedy Ex Tempore

This work develops the idea to create a special place that represent the Divine Comedy into a 9 meters cube. Starting from the Fibonacci’s sequence and the Golden Ratio, and also studing the project “Danteum” of Giuseppe Terragni, this mystical space is composed by three layer: Inferno - Purgatorio - Paradiso. Inferno is a dark labyrinth of walls were people lose themselves; the passage to Purgatorio is marked by a small door and stairs represents the ascension to Paradise. This is a paradigmatic square space, with reflective floor, suspended and hanged by 33 lines: here the light comes out from the ceiling.

Osmotic Memory

This project works into the abandoned area of “Macello di Milano”, the biggest 1900s butchery in Milan. The goal is give back to the city a new cultural and agricultural research center. In the first studying phase the memory of places was considered a crucial element, then identifying the stable contextual elements and defining an orthogonal matrix in order to generate alignments and connections towards the city inside a strongly introverted area. At the beginning the closing wall is an insurmountable element: in the project it should become thicker and able to change and reflect the different condition of the city. It should be able to connect the inside with the outside though a dynamic - osmotic - balance between residential and industrial

fabric, between the new agricultural space and the city, between memory and new perspectives. The former train path was identified as a variation component and used as new linking passage along the area. Along the borders, different buildings regulate the relationship with the outside. Inside the area, some “rooms” were defined, separated through physical limits (new buildings, new ecoforest), and connected through metabolic paths at different levels. The former slaughter building, in the South part of the area, is the core of the project. It becomes part of the osmotic border as an exhibition hall, working together with a new building, the market, and with the great square, which opens up the area to the people and to the city.

Utopia for Ala

The industrial cluster area of Ala (TN), located bewteen mountains, the Adige river, City and agricultural areas, will be progressively replaced by a new cultural and research center in order to give back to the city an immense area. In the complex and conflicting setting of an industrial and logistics cluster on demise, closely linked with an “urbanized countryside” and the strong sign of the river infrastructure, the design exercise has the aim to define a new identity and a new meaning for the area at a territorial and architectural scale. The description of places and of the urban textures and the subsequent comprehension and identification of the main elements of the built space, open space and relational space were the starting point for the design phase.

At the territorial and urban scale, there is a new configuration of the complex open space system, defining a technological and cultural path able to connect the city from the mountain to the river, identifying two architectural elements as polar cores. At the architectural scale, the definition of a passing-through system at different heights levels, inside an existing backyard, in which secret gardens, exhibition spaces and study and research areas come one after the other. The design idea was the developed through the continuous relationship with the stable elements of the context. Internal spaces quality and connections were then studies, also dealing with technological elements such as concrete pillars and walls. The final configuration is displaying

as a complex form closely related with existing volumes, in order to connect two polarities through a system of multifunctional spaces oriented by nature, art and culture. The existing industries will be converted and their spaces reinvented, working with voids and layers, adding a new big structure that is “floating” on the roof, defining a new Landmark. Porta Romana Social Housing

The design process started with a phase of “descriptive decoding of the urban space in which the project should have fit: the transformation of the abandoned railway scale of Porta Romana in Milan. Built spaces, open spaces, relational and linking spaces were considered as the first material for architecture and a morphological analysis gave the chance to highlight the crucial elements of the area. The concept starts from a 50 meters square grid, the instrument to re-link the area with the city; the great central void of the green linear space become a relational space, define borders, public spaces and residential areas. Starting from the residential typology of the closed city block were defined residential clusters

composed of Energy Zero social houses. The design process required lots of formal variations and internal configurations in order to optimize energy balance. Using simulation softwares as design instruments of architectural spaces and technological wall composition, the final result is excelent. The amount of energy for each residential cluster is very low (approximately 1 kWh/m2y) with solar panels power contribution.

House for Artist _ Borneo Sporenburg

This project at architectural scale is located in Borneo Sporenburg (Amsterdam) and specifically encloses a small house for an artist with laboratory and atelier. In the processs, each party was to profit as much as possible on the one hand from the south-facing view of the water, and on the other from the north-facing view of the quarter. The concrete core constitutes the “skeletonâ€? of the wooden structure, the organic softness of which heightens the rawness of the concrete. The ceilings and the walls are made of prefabricated, isolated wood elements. The characteristic of the façade is the differentiation: galvanised sheet-metal on the north and white plaster in south side. With: Laura Aquari, Giorgia Tavecchio

Visualize
