What’s Happening @ Dunkirk

Dear Residents,

The end of the year always seems to be upon us before we are ready, but we have definitely made the most of this year, with some big projects and improvements to the Estate facilities completed.

turned out beautifully! With so much more utilisable space and sitting areas, a lovely flat section for play, some new play elements like the balancing beams, crawl pipe and bending poles, and plenty of room to grow. It’s a space we can truly be proud of.

While it took longer than expected, due to a few unforeseen snags and setbacks during the project, (I guess that’s building for you!), the Playground rebuild has

Following the bathroom revamp at the main clubhouse, the lounge area has also had some attention, with a new

couch, cushions, planters, and a bookcase. After many requests for it, we now have a “Take-a-book, Leave-a-book” lending library, so stop by and take a quiet moment to peruse, enjoy, and then take something home with you.

As we come to my favourite time of the year, and everything starts to get busy with family and the rush of the festive season, I hope you can take some time to reflect and look back over the past year, the highs, the lows, and the lessons.

With the long overdue gym upgrade also complete, the stylish new entrance and bar at Ray’s Kitchen and the Main Clubhouse will be at their best for the festive season. The new walkway on Sameja Drive has significantly improved pedestrian safety, benefiting both residents and staff.

May you have a wonderful festive season, however you may celebrate, adding special memories to the ones you already have. If you are travelling, we wish you a wonderful trip and a safe journey. “Blessed be your holidays, Cosy be your hearth, Merry be your family, Peaceful be your hearts.” – Irish Blessing

As a reminder, the Estate will be closed to contractors and builders (emergencies excepted) from Friday, 13 December 2024 until Monday, 6 January 2025, to ensure a peaceful holiday break for all.

Lithium battery fires

a reality check

South Africa is progressing toward greener energy solutions with a notable increase in off-the-grid power system installations.

Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in various renewable energy storage systems like solar batteries, electronic devices, electric vehicles, inverter backup batteries, golf carts, e-bikes, and more.

Overheating lithium-ion batteries while in use or charging (often overcharging or due to corrosion) can propagate a devastating fire.

Self-oxidising lithium salts in these batteries means that the risk posed due to thermal runaway is being widely discussed and documented to mitigate these fires.

A lithium battery fire is particularly aggressive and unpredictable, burning at extreme temperatures, exploding, and even reigniting long after the fire is thought to have been suppressed. It is vital to note that not just any fire extinguisher will effectively address a lithium battery fire.

Stakeholders, including certain insurance providers and fire departments, are taking proactive

measures to address the rising risks of lithium fires. More knowledge is being shared while standards and safety protocols are being placed. When discussing this hot topic, it is a relief to note that the gel extinguisher can combat, suppress, and prevent the reignition of lithium battery fires. Hazpak Fire Services offers a specialised gel fire extinguisher made in Europe with certification. The green gel smothers the fire by coating the battery cells, interrupting the chemical process, and rapidly cooling the fire down. We’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have and help you select a suitable fire extinguisher to safeguard your home.

Opening of Green Malkoha Playground

The residents eagerly anticipated the opening of the playground and the day finally arrived on October 4. It was a beautiful afternoon, with a DJ playing enjoyable music, delicious food courtesy of Ray’s Kitchen, and there was an abundance of wine and bubbles from Foothills Vineyard. To add to the festive atmosphere, an open bar was provided, and residents were also welcome to bring their own cooler boxes filled with their favourite drinks while the kids played and had fun!

TRIFLE

A delicious traditional treat!

Words by: Fatima Sydow

Ingredients

• 2 packets (80 g each) greengage jelly

• 2 packets (80 g each) strawberry jelly

• 1 vanilla sponge cake or Swiss roll

• 1 large tin (825 g) fruit cocktail

• 1 litre (4 cups) prepared custard

For decoration

• 250 ml (1 cup) whipped cream

• grated chocolate

• berries

• walnuts

Method

1. Prepare both jellies separately as per the packet instructions.

2. When the jellies have set, place all your ingredients neatly next to each other in smaller bowls, because trifle is an assembly of ingredients – no cooking or baking required.

3. Use a very deep bowl for a two-layer trifle or a large shallow bowl for a one-layer trifle. You can also use individual glasses.

4. Cut the sponge cake or Swiss roll into slices, then place half at the bottom of the bowl. Scatter half the fruit cocktail over the sponge layer, then drizzle with half of the syrup. Now dollop half of the green and red jelly over the canned fruit, evenly. Pour and spread half of the custard over the jelly.

5. Repeat all steps until all the ingredients have been used. Pipe some cream over the top and decorate with berries, grated chocolate, and walnuts. Place in the fridge overnight, covered, ready for the festive feast the next day.

Tips/Substitutions

• Use lemon and poppy seed loaf cake or sliced muffins instead of vanilla sponge cake or Swiss roll.

• You can use any flavoured jelly of you choice. I prefer the berry flavours, such as blackcurrant

• For a chocolate trifle, use a chocolate sponge cake, chocolate mousse, and decorate

• with grated dark chocolate.
