s the year winds down and the festive season wraps around us all, I can’t help but reflect on what this time of year truly means to me. Christmas has always been a celebration of hope, love, and renewal. But above all, it’s a moment for me to realign with what matters most: seeking the kingdom of God. I always feel like it’s a time to anchor our lives in faith, purpose, and the values that carry us through life’s highs and lows.
Looking back on the past year, I’m filled with pride at how much we’ve once again produced and worked on. The stories we’ve shared, the people we’ve connected with, and the lives we’ve hopefully touched – are very special. This year, I asked the team to adopt the motto “Live the Brand, Love the Brand”, and I’m thrilled to say they have embraced it wholeheartedly in everything they’ve done.
As I turn my thoughts to 2025, I feel a sense of excitement and determination. I hope to foster a spirit of unwavering belief that the people and businesses of the East Coast, and all of KZN, are on the brink of something extraordinary. There is a tangible shift happening, an energy that speaks to a future filled with bold optimism and shared success. After years of challenges, it’s time to reclaim our position as a key economic hub, a top tourist destination, and one of the most remarkable places to live and work in South Africa.

Take Charge of the Year Ahead

Have you found yourself looking back on the year wondering, “Where did all the time go?” Does it feel like another year has slipped by without you achieving the things you had hoped for? If so, you are not alone. Time seems to move faster than ever, and in the whirlwind of daily life, we often lose sight of our personal goals.
At the start of any year, we’re naturally inclined to reflect. We look back at the past 12 months, take stock, and think about how things could have been different. Perhaps this is your sign to do just that. Make time for yourself—maybe take yourself out on a solo coffee or tea date—and really reflect on the year gone by. Ask yourself, “What could I have done differently?” and “How will I be more intentional with the year ahead?”
But remember, there’s no need to wait for the perfect timing to start anew. You don’t have to wait for a new year, a new month or even a new week. Any moment can be the starting point for change. Maybe this past year was challenging, and you didn’t accomplish as much as you’d hoped. Rather than sitting in frustration or disappointment, ask yourself, “What can I do differently next year?” Shift your mindset toward action and progress.
Setting goals is not limited to the professional realm. Personal goals are just as crucial. I like to think of it as a road trip. Growing up in Johannesburg, we would often drive to Durban. We always knew the journey’s starting point—home in Midrand—and our destination, the beach in Durban. Along the way, there were familiar pit stops, detours, and signs that kept us on track. My father used to promise that whoever
spotted the sea first would win an ice-cream—a fun reward after a long journey.
Goal setting works in much the same way. You need to know where you are, where you want to go, and what steps will help get you there. Be prepared for the occasional detour or pit stop. Life’s journey is rarely straightforward, but the important thing is to keep moving toward your goals. And when you finally reach your destination, don’t forget to celebrate! After all, who doesn’t enjoy a reward after working hard?
So, as you reflect on this past year, ask yourself: What are three things you want to achieve next year? Take a moment to assess where you are right now in relation to those goals. Where do you want to be? And what actionable steps will you need to take to get there?
This is your chance to take charge of your life, to get intentional, and to take meaningful action. Time may fly, but with purpose and direction, you’ll find yourself soaring too.

Our country is rife with talent in every sector of the arts and dance is no exception, with world champions residing right here in Durban North/Umhlanga! Been dancing since age: 3
What did it mean to you to compete overseas?
Representing South Africa was both an honour and a privilege. This incredible experience has helped me grow as a dancer and as a person.
And then winning and leaving as WORLD CHAMPIONS—tell us how that felt?
Knowing we competed and came out on top against the best of the best in the world was one of the best feelings and my proudest moment.
How has becoming world champions changed your thoughts about dancing in the future?
It was a reminder that I’ve done my best but can always push more and become an even better dancer. Being a world champion has further motivated me to work towards my future goal of becoming a professional dancer internationally.
What was your favourite memory of the trip?
I loved exploring the city with my teacher and all my friends. The memories we made there are unforgettable and our friendships grew so much closer.
Your best/favourite achievement to date.
Becoming a world champion in Croatia, 2023 and in Prague, 2024 has definitely been my best achievements so far.

We were so overwhelmed with the generosity from friends and family who partnered with me and helped me achieve my goal of going to Prague. We were so humbled and are forever grateful. All this would not have been possible without my passionate, hard working and inspirational teacher, Taryn Smit, and Break-Thru Dance Academy. Thank you for inspiring and believing in me.

Been dancing since age: 14
What did it mean to you to compete overseas?
The opportunity to dance and compete against top international dancers in Prague with my team mates was such an amazing experience.
And then winning and leaving as WORLD CHAMPIONS—tell us how that felt?
Winning a gold medal, coming first in the world amidst amazing talent was spectacular, and quite unbelievable at the time. I loved representing South Africa, especially coming from Durban— we showed the world that we have incredible coaches, training, and talent in our country.
How has becoming world champions changed your thoughts about dancing in the future?
This experience has given all of us great confidence for our future in dance, but humbled us at the idea that we can also hold our own on the international stage.
What was your favourite memory of the trip?
Exploring Prague was so exciting and one of my most favourite memories. I can’t wait to do it again!

I would like to thank each and every person that sponsored me to enable me to compete in the Dance World Cup 2024. Their generosity has enabled me to perform internationally and opened up so many opportunities for my future. I am grateful to each and everyone.
The Dance World Cup, one of the most prestigious competitions you can compete in, was held in the Czech Republic this year. It was the biggest event they have had since starting in 2015, with an impressive 9500 dancers participating from all over the world. The competition, made up of several categories based on age and dance styles, allows dancers of all skill levels to participate. Representing South Africa were some incredible dancers from Break-Thru Dance Academy!
With competitions at this level, hours of thorough preparation goes into getting ready to compete and perform, “I won’t give away all our secrets on how we prepare for competitions, but our success came from maintaining a consistent weekly programme that balanced ballet, contemporary, stretching, and strengthening exercises,” Taryn adds. “I always research the competition and their level beforehand, then design a programme that meets or exceeds those standards.” Both teachers and students dedicate themselves to practise and perfect every move and step.
It’s such an honour to have dancers from our city compete and win at this prestigious event! The ballet group named Ithemba meaning “Hope” in isiZulu became world champions, with a routine choreographed by Taryn. “This piece holds a special place in my heart. I am deeply passionate about South African culture, and I wanted to create something that showed the world the fire of passion and rhythm that burns

Returning as world champions, the experience has humbled them. “They saw first-hand how much effort every top
competitor puts in, how hard work pays off, and that while we may not always win, giving our best is what counts,” Taryn recalls. “What struck us the most was how warmly our high-quality work was received— not with jealousy, but with support and encouragement. No one felt threatened, and every competitor uplifted each other."
The support and acknowledgement from other dancers felt genuine, reflecting their respect for each other. With one competition out of the way, they have exciting things ahead for 2025.

Indulge in a traditional holiday spread with mouth-watering recipes from Bluff Meat Supply! These dishes are to be enjoyed with roast veg or your favourite summer salads.
Pineapple Gammon
INGREDIENTS:
• 1/2 cup brown sugar
• 1/3 cup maple syrup
• 1 tsp Chinese five spice
• 5 x 440g cans pineapple slices in juice, drained, juice reserved
• 7-8kg whole leg gammon, on the bone
• 150g glacé cherries
• 500ml / 2 cups water
METHOD:
1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Place an oven shelf in the lowest position of the oven and remove the other shelves. Line a large roasting pan with baking paper.
2. Place the brown sugar, maple syrup, Chinese five spice, and 125ml (1/2 cup) of reserved pineapple juice from cans in a small saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring, for 2-3 minutes until sugar dissolves. Bring to a gentle simmer. Simmer for five minutes until reduced slightly.
3. Use a small sharp knife to cut

around the shank of gammon in a zig-zag pattern, about 10cm from end. Carefully run the knife under rind around the edge of the gammon. Gently lift off the rind in one piece by running your fingers between the rind and the fat.
4. Place a pineapple ring on the gammon and secure a cherry with a toothpick in the middle of the ring. Continue to place pineapple rings and cherries over the gammon, slightly overlapping to cover all areas. You may need to secure some of the rings on the sides with toothpicks.
5. Pour water into prepared pan. Place the gammon on a wire rack in the pan. Wrap exposed shank in foil. Brush a third of the glaze over pineapple. Bake for 40 minutes. Pour over half of the remaining glaze. Bake for 40 minutes until golden. Brush with remaining glaze. Set aside for 15 minutes to rest. Remove toothpicks before carving.
INGREDIENTS:
• 3 tbsp olive oil
• 1 brinjal, cut into chunks
• 2 mixed coloured peppers, such as orange and red, cut into chunks
• 1 red onion, cut into wedges
• 2 baby marrows, cut into chunks
• 4 garlic cloves
• 3 sprigs of thyme
• 200g cherry tomatoes
• handful of basil leaves
• zest of 1 lemon
• 50g feta, crumbled
METHOD:
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/220°C. Toss the brinjal, peppers, red onion, baby marrow, garlic, and thyme together in a bowl with sea salt, black pepper, and oil. Tip into a large roasting pan then roast for 30 minutes. Add the tomatoes to the pan and return to the oven for 10 minutes.
2. Squeeze the garlic from their skins, remove the thyme then scatter over the basil, lemon zest, and crumbled feta.
Roast Leg of Lamb
INGREDIENTS:
• 2 to 3 kgs trimmed bone-in leg of lamb
• 4 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary
• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme leaves
• 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
• 1 tablespoon kosher salt
• 2 teaspoons ground black pepper
METHOD:
1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Line a roasting pan with aluminium foil.
2. Using paper towels, pat the lamb dry.
Using a sharp knife, score the top side of the lamb by making shallow cuts all over.
3. In a small bowl, combine garlic, olive oil, rosemary, thyme, Dijon, salt and pepper.
4. Place lamb, fat side up, on a rack in the prepared roasting pan. Spread garlic mixture evenly over the lamb, rubbing in thoroughly into the scored cuts.
5. Place into oven and roast for about 1 & 1/2 hours or until desired doneness. Leave to rest for 15 minutes before slicing.
6. Serve immediately with mini roast potatoes and roasted veg of your choice.
Cranberry Chicken
INGREDIENTS:
• 2 cloves garlic
• 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
• 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 tablespoon soy sauce
• 1 cup cranberries, divided
• 8 pieces chicken (thighs, drumsticks or a mixture)
• non-stick spray, as needed
• Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme, plus extra sprigs for finishing
• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary, plus extra sprigs for finishing
METHOD:
1. In the bowl of a food processor or blender, process the garlic, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, soy sauce, and cup of the cranberries until smooth.
2. Place the chicken pieces in a large zip-lock
the marinade. Place the chicken pieces in the skillet or dish, skin side down, and season with salt, pepper, thyme and rosemary. Sprinkle the remaining one cup cranberries around the pan.

• 1.5kg salt beef, unrolled
• 2 onions, roughly chopped
• 2 carrots, roughly chopped

• 2 sprigs thyme
• a few sage leaves
• 2 bay leaves
CURING MIXTURE:
• 1 clove garlic, peeled
• 2 cloves
• 1 star anise
• 2 juniper berries
• 1 tsp black peppercorns
• 1 bay leaf
• 2 sprigs thyme, leaves picked
• 20g soft light brown sugar
• 45g salt beef curing salt
METHOD:
1. Put the salt beef in a large, shallow dish. To make the curing mixture, use a pestle and mortar to crush the garlic, cloves, star anise, juniper berries, peppercorns, bay and thyme leaves until roughly ground. Stir through the sugar, followed by the cure mix, ensuring it has been accurately measured in proportion to the weight of the meat—follow pack instructions for guidance. Coat the salt beef with the brining mixture, thoroughly rubbing it into the meat and any surrounding fat.
2. Put the salt beef and any left-over brining mixture into a large freezer bag, zip it closed (squeezing out as much air as possible), then put into an airtight container and find a spot in the fridge. Leave to brine for one week, turning the salt beef daily to allow the meat to cure evenly. You should notice some liquid in the bag after a day or two—this is a sign that the brining process is working.
3. The night before serving, remove the salt beef from the freezer bag, wipe off any brine mixture and put it in a large pan. Fill the pan with cold water, put on a lid and leave the salt beef to soak overnight.
4. The next day, drain the water from the pot and refill with enough fresh water to cover the salt beef by about 5cm. Throw in the chopped onions, carrots and celery, as well as the garlic, thyme, sage and bay leaves. Bring to the boil, then turn down the heat and gently simmer the brisket for 2 to 2 & 1/2 hours (depending on the thickness). Cook for another hour if you prefer the salt beef to be almost falling apart when you bite into it.
5. Take the pan off the heat and nestle a sheet of baking paper on top of the
water to keep the salt beef submerged and stop it drying out. Leave the salt beef to cool for 30 minutes, then lift out onto a chopping board (use the left-over broth as the base for a soup, if you like). Cut the salt beef into thin slices and load straight onto bagels while still warm, along with as much mustard and as many dill pickles as you can handle. Any left-over salt beef will keep for a week in the fridge—wrap in foil and reheat in the oven at 180°C for 15 minutes or until piping hot.

Gateway Theatre of Shopping, the ultimate shopping, leisure and entertainment haven in KwaZulu-Natal, is pleased to confirm that its extensive multimillion-rand revamp is making headway. After months of construction work at the largest retail destination in the province, significant progress is evident, and the results are poised to elevate the shopping experience in the over 177,000m² centre to a new level. Phase one of the renovation, that started two years ago, included introducing exquisite triple-volume faceted glass façades around the main lifts, an eyecatching new geometric tiling design, and curved organic ceiling bulkheads. It also included a luxurious transformation of the Great Hall around Gateway’s entrance axis. Earlier this year, the centre's north wing underwent a rejuvenating transformation, further enhancing the aesthetics.
A Glimpse into the Vision for the Upgraded Centre
The focus with the current phase of the renovations is largely aesthetic, aimed at enhancing the overall ambience and visual appeal while creating a more modern and inviting atmosphere for visitors. Upon completion, shoppers will be greeted by a sophisticated setting featuring clean lines, luxurious finishes, and a predominantly white palette that maximises natural light and visibility throughout the mall. Visitors will appreciate the simplified, neutral setting that emphasises store shopfronts while prioritising an ambience of openness.
“Our goal is to elevate every aspect of the visitors’ shopping experience,” shares Feysel Potgieter, General Manager of Gateway. “From better flow through the mall to more communal spaces and improved accessibility, the refurbishment will make Gateway a place where people
continue to want to shop, dine, relax, and spend time with friends and family.” The remodelling of the north wing and Entrance 7 node will continue into 2025, including an overhaul of the restrooms near the SPCC store. During this period, staff and shoppers are advised to use alternative ablution facilities within the mall, with directional signage prominently displayed to guide visitors to these facilities.
Furthermore, the beloved water fountain in the atrium is getting an exciting technologybased upgrade. Being able to combine different modes of gaming and interests under one roof took a significant amount of time to plan and work through, working with TMD Studios, owner Zane Ramnundlall didn’t back down from the challenge, “It was important to create a space that wasn't just a store but a community hub where people felt safe and encouraged to enjoy their interests,” he explains. What resulted from his vision was a cohesive and inclusive environment where you can be immersed in the experience comfortably, and a photo-ready set-up so you can also capture your visit—try taking a picture underneath the light arch!

Now that we’re basking in the peak heat of summer and the holiday season has finally started, it’s time to get out there and celebrate as the year comes to an end. Having the confidence to go out and enjoy yourself makes all the difference. Amy and I were excited to experience a treatment programme with their experienced team. The Umhlanga
branch of Skin Renewal is welcoming and bright; we were both greeted by pleasant smiles and guided to one of the therapy rooms where we spoke with one of their concierges who noted our skin concerns.All patients are required to see a doctor for a consult to discuss their skin concerns. For me, my concerns were my acne and the resulting scarring, which the therapist informed me was PIH (Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation) and was treatable. Amy’s skin concerns were fine lines around the eye area, dark circles under her eyes, and a bit of congestion under the skin. Our skin was prepped, using a gel cleanser to remove
any build-up or make-up, then we got one of the best neck and shoulder massages we have ever experienced, and lastly, she took close-up images of our skin from multiple angles. The consult session ended with a detailed breakdown from the doctor of what our treatment plan was going to consist of. They prescribed five treatments each for Amy and me to undergo with them, and home care to do while we were doing the treatments. We both received the Skin Renewal Azelaic 10% Cream to use daily two weeks before our first treatments and throughout the journey. Personally, I was given the Heliocare SPF 50 Gel sunscreen, and

supplements to balance out internal factors contributing to my acne. I was to take the Skin Renewal Acne Aid 2-in-1, Omega 3, and Probiotic (Ultra Pro 20) supplements.
Our first treatments were both a PDT (Photo Dynamic Therapy) facial. This treatment uses specific wavelengths of light to rejuvenate skin, heal wounds, and treat various skin conditions. Using blue, red, and yellow light, PDT stimulates the body's natural healing processes, leading to softer, smoother, and more vibrant skin. This versatile and non-invasive therapy can be tailored to address a wide range of concerns, especially acne and ageing.
Next, I had an Azelaic peel with Couperosis Cream and the PDT added on. This treatment is a low-pH combination peel, targeting all the main signs and symptoms of acne, like oiliness, congestion, breakouts, PIH, and inflammation. I could already see the inflammation in my skin subside. My next few treatments focused on reducing inflammation in my skin and promoting cell turnover to lighten the dark marks. The SAMA peel, something new for me, consisted of a self-neutralising peel. Once applied, it tingled on the skin for a
while before settling down. The therapist was helpful in fanning my face to calm the tingling sensation. The unique peel combination is excellent for acne, PIH, pigmentation, sun damage, inflammation, fine lines and wrinkles as well as antiageing. I was advised that some peeling will occur after this session and to replace the Azelaic cream with a more moisturising cream, and to stay out of the sun. After every session, the therapist messaged to check how we were doing. My next session included Laser Genesis™ Rejuvenation, it felt like little drops of water on my skin as she moved over my face. It helped relieve my acne scars and gave me a refreshed appearance without the need for invasive procedures. My last treatment, the Radiance Peel with a retinol overlay, exfoliated my skin to give me healthier-looking skin and allow better peeling to remove the skin with the PIH.
Amy’s series of treatments focused on tightening and reducing the congestion she was concerned about. The peel, with Carboxy Therapy (two injections on either side of the forehead, one under each eye and one just below each eyebrow) felt like a brain freeze and lasted for about a minute. The Endymed 3DEEP RF (Radio Frequency) machine created heat through a roller as she rolled it around her eyes to get the skin up to 40/41˚C to reduce facial wrinkles, lift and tighten the eye area. Her fourth treatment, a combination of the
Onyx, Azelaic peel, Laser 10k, Couperosis Cream and RF, all worked together to promote skin tightening, brightness, and reducing inflammation. Being hydrated was imperative for the RF treatment as the local heating causes an immediate contraction of the collagen fibres and at the same time increases the metabolism of the fibroblasts.
The last treatment consisted of a Hydratouch 3 phase, Carboxy Therapy, and Dysport 40 unit (botox). This session served to treat congestion and pigmentation with the Hydratouch, another round of Carboxy Therapy, and then the Hydratouch machine again to revitalise the skin. They then added a session of PDT to target sensitivity and congestion. Once done, Amy was fetched by the doctor for the Dysport, which was not painful at all, as she described— despite being terrified of needles and not using numbing cream!
After weeks of treatments, our skin showed remarkable improvements— reduced concerns and a fresh, glowing look that only got better over time. Our journey with Skin Renewal was as educational as it was transformative, giving us the confidence to embrace summer with glowing skin and renewed self-assurance!

WILDTRUST is a South African NonProfit, Non-Government and Public Welfare Organisation, established in 2004 through the merger of two regional trusts. It pursues the realisation of its vision of "A Thriving and Resilient World" through two core programmes: WILDLANDS and WILDOCEANS. WILDLANDS focuses on protecting and restoring terrestrial biodiversity and wildlife, empowering and uplifting communities.
WILDOCEANS protects and restores marine and coastal biodiversity while building resilience for coastal communities. Both programmes aim to enhance sustainability and impact through future leader development, science and knowledge generation, support to decision-makers and management authorities, community development and livelihoods support, awareness and communication, and advocacy and campaigning.
What role do marine protected areas play in conservation?
Like Game Reserves on land, Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) help safeguard ocean life and habitats. South Africa has 41 MPAs, covering 5.4% of our ocean space and safeguarding threatened species like sharks, rays, penguins, and
some turtle species. MPAs boost fish populations that spill over into other areas, support ocean health by producing oxygen and absorbing carbon, and ensure food security and livelihoods for billions of people.
How is Umhlanga Beach affected by plastic pollution and climate change?
Healthy coastal ecosystems act as climate change superheroes! They soak up carbon, help combat global warming and mitigate the negative impacts of climate change. Protecting and restoring coastal vegetation like mangroves, seagrass, and salt marshes can also bring economic benefits to coastal communities through eco-tourism and job creation.
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) safeguard these key habitats, including coral reefs, providing a shield against climate change and mitigating the impact of natural disasters.
Plastic Pollution: The Blue Port Project, of the WILDOCEANS programme of the WILDTRUST is a game-changing initiative to tackle plastic pollution in Durban's port. Since March 2019, our awesome team (mostly rockstar women) have removed 181,912 kg of waste from the port and surrounding areas, and installed waste-trapping interventions to stop plastic from entering the ocean, focusing on key rivers and

canals to prevent pollution. We are hopeful to restore Durban's port to its former glory—a BLUE port, free from plastic waste!
How can we, the community, contribute to ocean conservation?

• Download the WWF SASSI APP to make sure the seafood you consume is sustainably sourced.
• Invest in a reusable coffee cup, straw, and water bottle—most takeaway containers are SINGLEUSE PLASTIC and not recyclable. Do your bit and try to keep as much plastic out of our oceans as possible. So much more ends up in the ocean than we realise—out of sight, out of mind.
• Re-use, Recycle, and Upcycle! Use “waste” to create cool things—like Christmas decorations!

Breaking through the Holiday blues
How can we make most of the downtime we have in a healthy and sustainable way? In search of some advice, we spoke to Bianca Barnard and Nqobile Maphumulo, mental health professionals for their take on how to keep sane this festive season.
Bianca is a clinical psychologist currently completing her community service in the Ilembe district. She works with a wide array of patients and her areas of interest include assessment and intervention for neuro developmental disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder and psychotherapy for complex trauma, personality pathology, and mood disorders.

For many, winding down from a fastpaced year of chasing productivity can be a challenge. Here are some tips that may help with the adjustment: Forget FOMO. Ease yourself into this period. It’s been a busy year and rest and recuperation are vital. Rather than overextending yourself by committing to multiple plans, balance socialising and activities with time off.
Remember to maintain and assert your boundaries. Yes, this is a time for reconnection with others, but be mindful to know your limits and your triggers. Spending time with family when it is expected can be difficult, especially if you have a history of conflict or troubling relationship dynamics. For those who have lost loved ones, the festive season may be a reminder of this, and you may find yourself feeling low. It’s important that you validate and sit with these feelings rather than mask or numb them with the extra glass—or three—of wine. Part of validating your feelings is also recognising how they are impacted by your thoughts and behaviours.

If you’re feeling rotten, rotting in bed while stuck in a doom scroll of social media is only going to worsen how you think and feel about yourself. Rather, use this time off to immerse yourself in hobbies you enjoy and spend time outdoors. While throwing caution to the wind and tossing out the yearly planner as soon as you go on leave may seem cathartic, it’s important to try maintaining a routine. The occasional day spent on the couch, staying up late, and indulgent meals aren’t going to hurt, but if you completely disregard your sleep, eating and exercise schedule, your body and mind are going to bear the brunt when you need to engage them again.
On the note of healthy eating and exercise—how are those 2024 New Year’s resolutions going? The festive season is often a time when you reflect and look back on the year. However, it’s important that you reflect holistically and avoid “all-or-nothing” thinking, that may result in feeling guilty or despondent about goals you did not meet. Consider the small wins, the growth, and areas you can work on developing next year. Remember, you

“The best way to be a step ahead of this season is to prepare, prepare, prepare.” The holiday season can affect various areas of our functioning such as our social life, personal life and finances. These few tips can help: If you can just take a moment to yourself before the hustle and bustle of everything, and fully assess your habits, your expectations and set realistic goals, you will be able to prepare for what you already know is coming.
Confront your habits that allow certain boundaries to be crossed by the people who end up causing you more harm than good. As much as the festive season is known to be family time, there is no shame in balancing family time with personal times. Challenge yourself to communicate your boundaries clearly and boldly, people cannot respect boundaries they are not aware of. Remind yourself that holidays are for you too. It’s also about you getting a break, taking care of yourself, and filling your cup first.
Plan a set of things you can do and places you can visit that will bring about feelings of joy, relief, fun moments, and a sense of fulfilment. Plan realistic activities which align with your budget and preferences. Plan a walk, a day at the park or attempt a new hobby that you’re most likely going to enjoy and perhaps extend the invite to people who will help you feel at peace. Often, you may view the slowed work pace as something challenging or untimely. Instead, you can look at it as an opportunity to take a moment to breathe. Embrace the time cuts and plan in advance on how you are going to fill those gaps with things that are of service to you.
The concept of mindfulness is one that is highly necessary in helping you make the most of each moment. Don’t get so caught up that you miss out on creating meaningful, mindful experiences for yourself. Be intentional and present to your unique needs. Listen to your body and let it guide you into telling you exactly what it needs more of. Incorporate moments of quietness, stillness and intentionality, and enjoy your holidays!

Malibu Blue Hawaiian
INGREDIENTS
• 50ml Malibu
• 50ml blue curaçao
• 100ml pineapple juice
• 50ml cream of coconut
• 1 cup ice
Blend all ingredients until smooth and pour into a glass.
Brown Derby
INGREDIENTS
• 45ml Buffalo Trace bourbon
• 30ml fresh grapefruit juice
• 7.5ml honey
• dash of lemon juice
Shake all the ingredients with ice. Strain into a coupe glass.
Bourbon Mojito
INGREDIENTS
• 50ml Buffalo Trace bourbon
• 5ml lime juice
• 1 tsp sugar
• 60ml soda water
• fresh mint leaves
Muddle together the fresh mint, sugar, and lime in a tall glass. Load with ice. Add the bourbon and top up with soda water.

Chef Daniel Payne's love for food began at an early age, cooking with his Mom and Gran. Born and raised in a family that celebrated food, his early memories are filled with the aroma of fresh, hearty, and delicious home-cooked meals and the sounds of lively family gatherings. One of his first creations, at age seven, was a chocolate fondant—which his family thought was raw because it was soggy in the middle!
After training, he worked at some of Johannesburg's top hotels as a trainee chef, gaining as much experience as possible. During this period, Chef Daniel became a member of the Junior Culinary Team of South Africa under Klaus
Beckmann, the former executive chef of the old Westcliff Hotel. Over four years, he competed in local and international competitions, including the International Young Chefs Challenge in Korea and The African Culinary Cup.
Chef Daniel’s first job was part of the opening team of The Four Seasons Hotel—The Westcliff, as Chef de Partie at Flames Restaurant, where he began working his way up the ‘Four Seasons ladder’. He was part of a task force to Four Seasons Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, in France, working in the Michelin-starred Le Cap Restaurant, and another task force team to Four Seasons Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, where he oversaw nine
Signature Restaurants on the property and gained invaluable experience in both the all-day dining and signature environments. These experiences prepared Chef Daniel for his next role in the group as Executive Chef at The Four Seasons Hotel—The Westcliff in Johannesburg.
Thinking that he’d be at The Four Seasons ‘forever’, the chance to follow another path was surprising, even to him. After nine years with the Four Seasons Group, he joined The Oyster Box in December of 2023, and he said it felt like home from the moment he walked in. Chef Daniel’s menus at The Oyster Box reflect his love for fresh and local
ingredients. He believes the best dishes start with high-quality produce and sustainably sourced seafood and meat. Now that the occasional chilly days in November have passed, it’s time to get out and feel that warm December sunshine. All over the East Coast, there are some great attractions, from Umdloti to Durban North, you can always find something to do and see.
The Umhlanga Rocks promenade, Whalebone Pier, and the Lighthouse are always popular attractions, and for good reasons. With the Lighthouse standing there for 70 years, it’s not only an important guide for ships at sea but also an iconic landmark for locals and visitors alike. Everyone loves grabbing a photo of the Lighthouse with the ocean behind it.
There’s fun for the whole family! From 14 to 24 December, you will be able to find all sorts of events taking place along the promenade
and on Umhlanga Main Beach from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with games and prizes to be won.
Just down the road from the promenade is the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve. With the bridge being newly refurbished, you can take a calming walk through the coastal forest with the ocean as your reward at the end!
Heading a bit inland, the Japanese Gardens in Durban North means a fun time out for the whole family or a group of friends. Open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., it’s great for walks, birthday parties or enjoying the fresh air. The trees provide abundant shade and a cool breeze blows through the park, offering reprieve from the summer heat. You’ll find Japan-inspired waterfalls, structures like bridges, and even bamboo

From Coast to Countryside
Travelling from the coast, you can taste the fresh mountain air and, as we travelled through the nearby small village, the transition from the tar to the gravel road makes you feel like you have left the chaos of the city life and have entered the calm side of the country and mountains.
Warm Introductions
As we arrived, we were greeted by big smiles from the staff and duty manager, Melanie, who whisked us off for a short introductory tour of the lodge while our luggage was taken to our room. After giving us fresh towels to clean our hands and deliciously fresh brewed ice tea, she then showed us around the lodge, and guided us down to our suite which had a stunning view of the farm as well as the Spioenkop Nature Reserve. From there, we were led to the sundowner viewpoint while dinner was being prepared. There is something special about sitting in a wide-open field overlooking the Spioenkop dam glistening with the Drakensberg Mountain range as a backdrop and the setting sun creating the most splendid silhouette. We sat with two international couples who travelled from London to see the beauty our country offers.
Dining & History
Before dinner was served, we headed down to Simon Blackburn’s, the owner, wine cellar which was located under the stunning history-filled library that was dedicated to the memory of his mom, Molly Blackburn (South African anti-apartheid activist and civil rights campaigner) where we got to learn a lot about her. The library holds more than 3000 books and the underground wine cellar can be booked for wine tasting and dining, for a bespoke experience. We chose which wine we’d like to pair with our dinner from their wide array of carefully selected South African wines. The lounge and dining area was reminiscent of a homely old farm-style inn with a choice to dine inside or on the patio. The entire room is decorated with genuine war artefacts, maps, posters, and old handwritten letters, creating a sort of time warp as you read the cursive script intimately describing the events and the escarpment. Before dinner, you are given a breakfast option list to choose what you would like to eat the next morning and the time you’d like to have it.
We were served a delicious potato and leek soup topped with bacon bits for starters, followed by an amazing crispy crusted chicken parcel, served with creamed sweet potato mash, and salted green beans. Then, to end dinner off, we had crème brûlée served with a berry coulis and toasted coconut shavings. You are offered the option of either dining at your own small table or joining the other guests at a farm-style combined table, we all chose to sit together to continue our chats and learn more about each
other and the travel plans they had. With a full tummy, we headed back down to our suite to chill for the remainder of the night, taking in the beauty of the stars shining over us.
Room with A View
Our room was nestled in-between the trees offering privacy and, on entering, you are greeted by a spacious area with a king-sized bed. The bedroom has windows and a stable door that opens out onto the patio, over the edge of the farm into the neighbouring nature reserve, allowing you to view the game from your bed. The bathroom inside the unit has full-sized glass panels with windows allowing you to look out into the valley as you bathe, and a shower so large that I am sure the giraffes in the valley would gladly join you on a hot summer's day. There are also family-friendly units and for South African travellers, a secret to get the best price is to check on their website for the direct booking two weeks prior to your weekend getaway. You could secure a weekend for almost (if not more) 50% off the rate per person.
Adventure & Exploration
On Saturday morning, we woke up early to get the day started and got to see the sun rising over the hills while sipping on our cups of coffee. Breakfast was fresh seasonal fruit, followed by bacon, eggs, mushrooms, and toasted homemade bread.
Following breakfast, we were handed our picnic bag with a blanket, cold water, juice box and a delicious light lunch to take on our adventure to the Royal Natal Reserve (which was just over an hour's drive away from the lodge). We chose to do the short Cascades hike up to the waterfalls. The walk up was magical with the Drakensberg mountains towering over us, and by the time we got to the top it was midday so we boldly decided to take a jump into the beautiful natural pools before having lunch under a tree while looking out at the waterfall. The lodge has activities like horseback riding, cycling, hiking on the farm trails or guided game hikes into the adjoining nature reserve, and a hike out to the Spioenkop Battlefield.
Sunday morning greeted us with beautiful sun rays shining over the hills. The amazing co-owner, Cheryl Blackburn, escorted us on our game walk in the neighbouring Spioenkop Game Farm, which included a delightful chat with tea and coffee. After a short walk from the Lodge, we entered into the Game Reserve. We were briefed by Cheryl, as she was loading her rifle, that there were rhinos, and should we come across them, we
are to remain still, in single file and not to run or make sudden movements. Although we were nervous at the thought of encountering a rhino by foot, we were so excited to see or spot one. Unfortunately, we did not get to see them, however, we got to see zebras, elands, water bucks, many stunning birds, and giraffes. We sat down under a shaded tree to catch our breath and watched the giraffes while they kept a protective eye on their young ones. We even got to see the one young come up to their mother and started suckling on her! Our hearts were full, and we decided to start making our way back to the lodge, where we were greeted by the amazing staff for breakfast, followed by a shower, and started packing our bags and getting ready to leave for home.
Farewell
What an amazing weekend! We loved every minute of it—the food, staff, rooms, views, experiences, history, the library, wine cellar, and everything else in-between. Thank you, Three Tree Hill Lodge, for a memorable weekend!
