A PART OF YOUR DAY

You can include your four-legged best friend in your wedding at Haycroft Farm, a venue where timeless romance meets the rustic beauty of the Midlands.

Set in the picturesque Midlands, Haycroft Farm offers a serene escape, thoughtfully designed for a worry-free celebration. With inclusive venue hire, neutral décor, and every detail carefully considered, it’s the perfect setting for your special day.

Is your venue dogfriendly? If so, what specific accommodations do you offer for them?

Our venue is indeed dogfriendly, and we welcome pets to join the festivities.

The Bridle Barn is entirely fenced, ensuring the safety of pets throughout the wedding weekend. We also offer a pet sitting service

post-photoshoot, providing a comfortable resting place for your pets, as well as a stress-free evening for you, knowing that your fur baby is safe and sound asleep.

What are some of the ways couples have incorporated their dogs into their ceremony?

We recently witnessed

a family training their gorgeous Great Dane, Vincent, to deliver the rings down the aisle.

Do you have designated areas for pets?

Pets are generally permitted in most areas on our farm, however, not all accommodation suites are pet-friendly.

Should couples be aware of any restrictions or rules when bringing their pets to the venue?

Pets are not allowed to remain at the reception when the music becomes excessively loud.

What tips do you have for couples who want their pets to play a role, such as being a ring bearer or part of a photoshoot?

Pets must be wellsocialised and comfortable with receiving attention.

Given the farm setting and wedding attire, it is advisable to avoid including a dog prone to jumping up. Acquaint the pet with the venue through frequent visits before the wedding day. If special accessories are to be worn by the pet, ensure they are accustomed to these items beforehand.

Have you hosted any dog-friendly weddings recently? If so, could you

share an example of how it worked and how the day unfolded?

Yes, we have hosted several events where pets played significant roles in both the ceremony and photoshoots. From the early preparations, these beloved animals were photographed alongside their owners. Some rested on their moms' veils during the ceremony, while others fell asleep on their dads' shoes. All were included in the creative photoshoot, together with the rest of the bridal party.

Following the canapés, as guests moved to the reception, pets were taken to the accommodation suites and settled for the night.

Can you accommodate overnight guests?

We can accommodate up to 72 guests. Our facilities include a fully equipped Clubhouse suitable for weekend events, ranging from pre-wedding gatherings with friends and family, morning coffee on the patio, to post-wedding brunches for farewells.

When is the best time to get married at Haycroft Farm?

We are an all-seasons wedding venue:

• Warmer Months: The summer rains transform the scenic views. Our forest chapel provides ample shade for afternoon ceremonies, while canapés by the dam are perfect for warmer afternoons. The entire front of the venue opens onto a terrace, cooling down the evenings beautifully.

• Cooler Months: Winter adds a cosy element to your wedding day. While days remain pleasantly warm, we provide blankets for guests who may feel chilly during the ceremony. Our outdoor fire pit, popular for sipping sherry, enhances the ambience. Additionally, the venue's fireplace is lit and welcoming as guests enter the reception, ensuring their comfort despite the outside temperature’s cooling down.

From meeting their soulmates to finding the perfect venues, these brides open up about their romantic beginnings, dream weddings, and cherished moments.

How did you and your Husband meet?

We met at university while studying law. It was one of those classic "we were meant to be" moments, and the rest, as they say, is history!

wHicH venue did you cHoose and wHy?

We chose The Grand Exotic in Ballito. My best friend of 35 years recommended the venue, and after visiting, we fell in love with its authentic charm and stunning beauty. It felt like the perfect place to celebrate our love.

How did you go about planning your wedding?

We started by getting a wedding guide from a close friend and then enlisted the help of Penny from "For The Table", a brilliant wedding décor specialist. She truly brought our vision to life with her incredible taste and attention to detail.

wHat was your favourite moment?

My favourite moment was seeing my husband, Mark, at the end of the aisle, especially after we had to postpone our wedding twice due to COVID-19. It was a moment we had waited so long for, and it felt absolutely magical.

is tHere sometHing you wisH you knew before tHe big day?

I wish I had known that, despite all the planning and preparation, the day would unfold exactly as it was meant to. No matter how much you try to control, you just have to embrace the moment and let everything flow.

"They say your wedding day is one of the best days in your life and while I never truly believed how one day in a white dress could be all that, but I must admit, our wedding day will forever be one of my favourite days!"

At Innovision Optometry, Daina is dedicated to helping patients achieve and maintain optimal vision.

A unique honeymoon through

Meet Sharné and Matthew McFarlane who decided to backpack through Africa to see gorillas and The Great Migration instead of a traditional honeymoon. Adventure and a once in a lifetime type experience is what they were after!

How did you decide where you wanted to go on your honeymoon?

We are a very adventurous couple and always find ourselves with unique goals and ambitions. We have travelled quite a lot internationally, separately, and together. After Matthew proposed on the Zambezi River while visiting Victoria Falls, we completely fell in love with Africa and what it has to offer. On the flight home, we decided we wanted to go backpacking in Africa. Obviously, I had no idea which country we would go to or what the activities would be but Matthew knew that it was on my bucket list to see the silverback gorillas.

Any "issues" along the way when booking

We encounted a few challenges along the way, but nothing we South Africans can’t handle, if you know how to watch your back and talk yourself out of situations

you’ll be fine. It was a challenging task to ensure smooth sailing on an African trip but the biggest challenge was booking the trip. It was difficult to trust the tour guides as everything had to be paid upfront and all communications were done over WhatsApp. We had booked through Adventure in the Wild Safaris after connecting with their guide, Robert, and we felt secure with him. A few days before leaving SA, they realised they had overbooked, but Robert quickly and swiftly rebooked for us to go to Buwindi, Mountain Ruhija, in Uganda and he sorted out a three-day tour on the mountain in Uganda which included travel, trekking, gorillas, monkeys, and volcanoes!

Tell us about the trip

We flew to Rwanda and then drove to Uganda during the night, a little scary but being young you tend to take more risks in life. We arrived in a small village called

Ruhijia where we gorilla-, monkey-, and volcano-tracked. We stayed with the local forest people which was such a humbling experience, this little village has near to no water and no electricity but there lived some of the most incredible people we have ever met. After three days, we ventured back to Rwanda where we had to say goodbye to our tour guide Robert. To this day, we call him often and can say we have made a lifelong friend. We stayed in Rwanda for two days then we took a flight to Kenya, Nairobi where we found someone to drive us to the Masai Mara National Reserve, we managed to hustle some accommodation outside the reserve in a tent (they called it glamping) but this was just a tent in an overgrown area which had no electricity and only cold water; we knew what we were in for touring Africa so we were happy with anything. We stumbled across a 20-year-old local named Mowgli and asked him to show us around as we

“If you’re up for adventures, we encourage people to ask around and you will find your best holiday will be the word-ofmouth one. ”

were advised not to walk through this village without befriending a local first. Some of our best nights were spent at the local bars, and for our last day, we spontaneously took a hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti National Park followed by a 5-star lunch in the Masai Mara. This was a beautiful end to our unique honeymoon in Africa.

Your best moment Matthew’s best moment was the tranquillity of the gorillas and the sunrise hot air balloon ride. My best moment: our game drive through the Masai Mara National Reserve, guided

by two locals. When we arrived at the reserve, we were informed that the migration had been slightly delayed this year due to rain. I was upset but we knew nature would throw us off slightly at some point. After three hours of the game drive, we saw National Geographic vehicles racing towards the river and then the big chase began as the migration had started going over the river. Our little Cruiser flew past these fancy vehicles and the two locals gave us front-row seats as we watched over 1000 wildebeest and zebras cross a croc-infested river. An experience you simply cannot explain in words.

For Him, From You

Thoughtful gestures that say "just because"

This one is for the girls … have you ever received a “just because” bouquet or your favourite chocolate without even hinting at it? It’s a heartwarming gesture that makes you feel appreciated and loved. But how do we show our guys that same spontaneous appreciation? I turned to the men on social media to get the inside scoop, and here’s what they had to say:

An Item Related to Their Hobbies or Sports

Whether he’s an avid golfer, a die-hard gamer or a music enthusiast, something small related to his passion can make his day. A set of golf tees, a new guitar pick or a collectible from his favourite sports team could be the perfect reminder that you know what he loves.

A Cold One –Pack of Beers

After a long day, what could be better than reaching for an icecold beer? Showing up with a six-pack of his go-to craft beer or that new brew he’s been curious about is a gesture that says, “I appreciate you.”

Nifty Braai Tools or Must-Haves

For the man who takes pride in his braai skills, there’s nothing better than receiving a shiny new gadget or an essential braai accessory. From stainless steel tongs with heat-resistant grips to a unique spice blend, these small items can make a big impact.

Biltong

It’s the classic snack that never fails. Whether it’s a long road trip or just a game day at home, surprising him with his favourite type of biltong will undoubtedly make him smile. Think of it as their savoury version of a box of chocolates.

Their Favourite Supplements

If your man is into fitness or keeping healthy, surprising him with his preferred protein powder, pre-workout or any supplement he’s running low on can be a thoughtful and practical gift.

So next time you want to return the “just because” gesture, keep these ideas in mind. A little thoughtfulness can go a long way, and it’s a great way to show him he’s cherished - just like he does for you.

A SLICE OF SWISS

WHERE THERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Switzerland is the ideal destination for an authentic European winter holiday, with snow-capped mountains, Christmas markets and traditional ski resorts galore. However, if you’re heading north during the warmer months, this postcard-perfect country should definitely be on your must-visit list.

Last August, I travelled to Lugano, Switzerland, to

spend a week of summer bliss with my family. This is my formal application for you to add this unique locale to your travel bucket list!

Visas and Travel Tips

Let’s start with the nitty gritty, shall we? South Africans need a Schengen Visa to enter Switzerland, which you must apply for through VFS Global. It took about a month to get my visa from my appointment date, so make sure you apply as early as

possible. I suggest selecting a multiple-entry visa. With Switzerland’s small size, it is the ideal place from which to explore the surrounding countries.

If you want to visit the Italian side of Switzerland, it is best to fly into Milan, which is only a one-hour drive away from the city of Lugano. As this was my second time visiting Switzerland, we decided to fly into Zurich and catch a train to Lugano. This was

an amazing experience as it runs straight through Switzerland, so there are plenty of opportunities to see the picturesque lakes, mountains and towns across the country. However, this option was quite a bit pricier than we anticipated!

Speaking of which, Swiss Francs are not kind to the South African wallet. With a currency stronger than the Euro and a generally high price point, budgeting is key.

The Jewellery Box of Europe When I told my fiancé's grandmother that I was visiting Switzerland last summer, she was absolutely thrilled, describing this unique country as a ‘jewellery box’. It is truly gorgeous, with some of the best landscapes I’ve ever seen, boasting magnificent green mountains framing blue lakes and green hills at every corner.

What also makes this fairytale land special is its variety. Switzerland is bordered by France, Germany and Italy, each of which divides this country in terms of language, architecture and culture. While on the train, we could clearly see how traditional Swiss German ski chalet homes slowly turned into Tuscanstyle residences as we travelled south. A beautiful jewellery box would not be complete without great weather. As a Durbanite, I do not fear humid, warm summer days, but Lugano gave me a run for my money! The days were sunny with temperatures that reached the mid30s, so I suggest packing light (and comfortable shoes for walking).

If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind European summer destination that isn’t filled with tourists and features incredible scenery, charming towns and lake activities, there is simply no better option

From Lugano to Caslano Lugano features Tuscan architecture, iconic Italian cuisine, and beautiful catholic churches with rich history. The city is set right on Lake Lugano, which is best admired from the various restaurants along the lake, during a stroll through the park (complete with a scoop of the creamiest gelato), or by renting a paddleboat to fully explore the blue waters.

Of course, the city has great shopping options, from local boutique shops and the Manor department store to high-fashion brands such as Gucci and Hermès. It’s easy to spend hours just wandering through the cobblestone roads.

Although I loved Lugano, the smaller town of Caslano has a special place in my heart. Roughly 30 minutes from the

city by train, Caslano is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen, the key drawcard being a lake that separates Switzerland and Italy, surrounded by mountains.

Our family lives in this town, making it an obvious choice for our accommodation. We stayed in a self-catering apartment at Residenza Parcolago, which I recommend as it gives you access to a private section of the lake. There is also a restaurant downstairs, convenient for ordering a takeaway pizza to enjoy at the water’s edge (remember to ask them to precut the pizza for you!).

Although small, there is a lot to do in Caslano. There are walking trails up

the mountain to fully appreciate the scenery, which brings you just metres away from the Italian border. Osteria Battello is an idyllic restaurant right on the lake, perfect for a dinner with a breathtaking view. A Coop grocery store and the train station are within walking distance, allowing us to easily explore the area.

When in Switzerland, chocolate is a must! Caslano is home to the Alprose chocolate factory. You can take a tour to learn more about how they create their chocolate, ending off with their factory shop to buy some goodies to bring back home.

Summer in Caslano revolves around the lake, and I would be lying if I said

I didn’t spend most of my time lying by the water with a good book or swimming in the cool water. The lake is clean, refreshing and needed in the summer heat! It’s also great for stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing. Above all, I could’ve spent hours just admiring the view – it almost doesn’t look real.

Just a Stone’s Throw From Italy

Whether by canoe, train or simply a short walk, Italy is just around the corner from Caslano, and I suggest making the trip if you have the time. You can take the train directly into Milan to visit the Piazza del Duomo, marvel at the iconic Milan cathedral, wander the streets or indulge in Italian cuisine.

Heavily influenced by Italian culture with a Swiss twist, Lugano is a priceless piece in the jewellery box that is Switzerland, and I would go back in a heartbeat! If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind European summer destination that isn’t filled with tourists and features incredible scenery, charming towns and lake activities, there is simply no better option.

FOOD FOR THE AT Dumpling Bar

Hello to the new Dumpling Bar at Belvista Centre!

Tucked in a cosy corner with a subtle beach view, you are gently eased into relaxation mode. At the entrance, you will see two traditional female statues - the perfect props for a playful photo op that will get your visit off to a memorable start!

As we stepped through the doors, we were enveloped in a warm and inviting atmosphere, courtesy of the gracious waitresses who greeted us with bright smiles. The décor seamlessly whisked us away to ancient China; every intricate detail, from the murals on the walls to the flowers hung from the ceiling, set the tone for a truly authentic dining experience. The lively outdoor seating area got us mingling over drinks while we browsed through their

menu. We began with their delightful starters, the Single Sushi Platter, which is a beautiful combination of California rolls, rainbow rolls, and salmon sushi, accompanied with a Dim Sum Box which includes crispy chicken bao buns, juicy chicken dumplings, prawn and chicken suimai and an extra platter of dumplings because there's no such thing as too much dumplings!

With so many delicious options on the menu, it had taken us some time to decide what to have for main and this is what we ended up devouring: The Korean Sticky Chicken, which is fried chicken balls tossed in Korean gochujang sauce, a perfect balance of sweet and spicy. The Kung Pao Prawn, wok fried prawns with dry red chilli, mixed vegetables, garlic chilli sauce, and topped with roasted peanuts, boasting a ton of flavour

and textures. The Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs with pineapple, onion, and bell peppers will have you licking your fingers! All these dishes have options to have them served with veggies, egg fried rice, or noodles. And lastly (our favourite) the ultimate comforting Soup Noodle with Beef Brisket, holy cow (pun fully intended). Slowly braised beef served over egg noodles in a hot, rich beef bone broth, d-i-v-i-n-e!

In the end, we were chilling with ice cream, it looked so good and tasted so sweet - perfect for a sunny day in Ballito. We indulged in a Deep Fried Ice Cream and the Cake of the Day which was a chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla layered ice cream cake topped with red and green glace cherries, nuts, and chocolate sauce ... Need I say more?

Tài xièxie le, Cindy and the Dumpling Bar Team for a beautiful lunch and wonderful service. We cannot wait to come back!

February is the month of love – what better way to celebrate than with the perfect kiss? The lips should be a key facial feature: an alluring, attractive and shapely addition to your facial aesthetic. Whether you’re looking to volumise, define or rejuvenate, modern medicine is here to help.

The Modern Approach – The Medical Renaissance

Plastic surgeons are lending the skills long appreciated by artists when defining the lips. Areas of fullness, convexity and concavity, shadows and highlights along with the overall balance of the face must be carefully assessed. It’s no longer acceptable to have blown-up chipolatas for lips or big misshapen duck lips. Please ladies, choose your doctor carefully and keep it natural!

The Power of Lip Enhancement

A 2019 study in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology found that patients who received facial aesthetic procedures, like lip enhancements, experienced improved self-perception, social interactions, and happiness. When your lips reflect the way you feel, it can positively impact relationships, career, and overall confidence.

In Full Control: What are the options?

There are various non-surgical and surgical methods to create “kissable lips”. Here’s a quick look at each:

Non-Surgical:

Lip Flip

Botox relaxes the upper lip muscles to give a “pouty look”

• Pros: Minimally invasive, no incisions, fast results.

• Cons: Temporary, doesn’t add actual volume, requires maintenance, can affect lip movement.

Dermal Fillers

Hyaluronic acid fillers add volume and hydrate lips.

• Pros: Quick, adjustable, lasts 6-12 months, reversible.

• Cons: Temporary, risk of lumps or asymmetry, can be overdone, filler can migrate.

Surgical: Fat Grafting

Fat from your body adds natural, lasting volume.

• Pros: Long-lasting, natural feel, minimal maintenance.

• Cons: Surgical, longer recovery, volume can reduce over time.

Lip Lift

A surgical procedure that lifts the upper lip for a more youthful, fuller look, with scars hidden in the natural creases of the nose.

• Pros: Permanent enhancement, fuller appearance without added volume giving a natural appearance

• Cons: Surgery with longer downtime (often done with simple local anaesthetic as an in-rooms procedure)

the property market has started with a bang this year and has estate agents running like crazy, servicing a flood of enquiries and concluding transactions. Given the relatively poor trading conditions experienced in 2023 and the marginal recovery that 2024 brought, this is a welcome scenario. Interestingly, Seeff, as a leading South African real estate brand, experienced its best trading year in its 60th anniversary year in 2024. The current indicators show that 2025 is expected to be even better.

For those of us at the sharp end of the industry, engaging with buyers and sellers daily, we tend to “feel” the change in a property market cycle before the trading stats reveal this.

The current snapshot of our key economic data reveals CPI inflation at 3%. Producer price inflation is at an unbelievable negative -0.1% and coming off -0.7% in the prior month. This is the lowest producer price inflation we have seen in a very long time. As far as we have data, I can only pick up May 2020 at PPI growth of 0.3%, during our COVID lockdown time, as the next lowest. This all means that inflation is well under control at the moment and will hopefully encourage the SA Reserve Bank Monetary Committee to reduce interest rates at a faster rate.

It has been years since we have experienced the level of property sales along the North Coast we are currently seeing. For those properties that have remained unsold for extended periods, we are seeing one after the next trade. It is like the market is clearing out all the old stock and making way for the new. Those smart buyers who have already

committed to a property transaction over the past six months, could not have timed their purchase better, and the next few years are expected to yield good returns.

With the market about to shift from a buyer’s market to a seller’s market, where are the best buys currently to be found? From what we are seeing it appears to be those second homes that have become a cash drain to the existing owners over the past few years, who have not been able to keep up with general maintenance and now find themselves in arrears with their municipal rates and body corporate and HOA levies. This provides a level of financial distress to the seller and as long as the property offers good space and an excellent location, these represent the low-hanging fruit for savvy investors to negotiate favourable pricing, lock in the equity and then add value to the property by upgrading the fixtures and finishes. An R100m invested in these opportunities currently available in high-demand and growth suburbs in South Africa can be expected to outperform most other asset classes over the next three to five years.

If you have been considering joining the real estate industry, this would be the perfect time. As the general property market cycle gains speed and moves into its upward trajectory, it creates an excellent time to conclude transactions and be part of a booming market.
