Welcome to 2025.

NOTE EDITOR'S

There’s something special about a new year. It’s not about resolutions or big promises—it’s simply the chance to pause, take a breath, and appreciate where we are, who we share life with, and what opportunities lie ahead. For me, that’s what this issue of The Midlands is all about: celebrating love, memories, moments, and opportunities.

For most of us, whether we grew up here or simply visited, the Midlands has always been a place where memories are made, where the countryside has a way of sticking with you. But if there’s one thing the Midlands does better than most, it’s embracing love. With its stunning venues, rolling hills, and peaceful charm, it has become the place for weddings.

Last year (wow, that feels strange to say), that magic became personal for me. Our daughter, Roxy, got married at Haycroft, and while I’ve always believed the Midlands was something special, that day took it to a whole new level. A wedding in the forest, walking her down the aisle, stunning Midlands sunsets, and a night to remember with friends and family—words don’t do it justice. It wasn’t just a wedding; it was a day filled with moments we’ll talk about for years to come. Those moments, those memories, are all planted right here in

the Midlands, and that’s just part of what makes this place so magical.

In this issue, we try to share a little bit of that magic. From stunning countryside weddings to love stories and inspiration for anyone planning their special day, we hope these pages remind you just how incredible the Midlands really is. For those of you who said your “I Do’s” many years ago, I hope this edition inspires you to reflect on your own special day—especially the people, the place, and the stories. Whether you’re a bride-to-be, someone looking for a quiet weekend escape, or simply someone who loves the Midlands as much as we do, there’s something in this “love” edition just for you.

To all our readers and the wonderful Midlands community, we wish you a happy, healthy, and memorable 2025. Thank you for being part of this journey with us. May this year bring you plenty of love, laughter, and moments you’ll never forget—plus loads of happiness reading The Midlands Magazine!

Till our next edition, God bless

Fixing Society’s Empathy Crisis

Have you ever looked around and thought, “Wow, we’re really lacking empathy these days”? You’re not alone. People seem more selfcentered and impatient than ever and the main culprit? Stress.

When we’re stressed, our brains switch to survival mode and everything becomes all about “me-me-me”, because that’s our bodies’ natural instinct to stay alive. Living on the proverbial hamster wheel doesn’t leave much room to pause and consider others compassionately. Getting frustrated becomes far easier than taking a breath and showing empathy.

But here’s the thing: we desperately need empathy. Empathy connects and makes us feel understood—this is crucial for optimal mental health. Also, there are some great perks too: better relationships, improved quality of life (even better sleep!), stronger leadership skills, higher self-esteem, increased productivity, and—drumroll, please—greater overall happiness. Who wouldn’t want that?

So, what exactly is empathy? Empathy is stepping out of our world and into someone else’s and understanding their thoughts and feelings even when their story doesn’t particularly match ours. Empathy is essential for our species’ survival, but how do we cultivate it in ourselves and our kids? Here’s the clincher: empathy can’t be taught, but it can be caught. The best way to create a more empathetic (and kinder) world is to practise it ourselves, but if

we’re honest—when we’re frustrated with others, this can be a tough task.

The best trick I’ve found to help turn frustration into empathy is when someone does something you just can’t understand, just say to yourself, “I wonder why.” These words are magical in shifting annoyance to compassion. Then follow it up with the “three reasons game”. Come up with any three reasons (wild and weird are welcome) why someone might be behaving a certain way. This helps our brain switch to a more empathetic response instead of fantasising about grabbing them by the throat.

Remember, no behaviour is ever a personal attack even though it almost always feels like it. We’re all just responding from our own emotional spaces. Want a kinder world? Practise empathy. I promise you’ll be happier, and those around you will thank you for it. They might even become more empathetic themselves.

So the next time you’re ready to lose it, just think: “I wonder why.” Change your lens, reframe and you’ll be amazed at how different things look. In the words of Henry David Thoreau: “Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other’s eyes for just an instant?”

The best way to create a more empathetic (and kinder) world is to practise it ourselves

FACE FIRST MEDIA

WORDS ALICIA DU PLESSIS

Precision Marketing

Founded by Stevan Wilken, Face First Media is a company specialising in large-format billboard advertising that creates bold, impactful visuals that grab attention and leave a lasting impression. Fascinated by the creative and technical sides of advertising, Stevan was always excited to turn concepts into massive, larger-thanlife billboards, “It’s about capturing someone’s attention in just a few seconds as they pass by, which is powerful,” he shares.

His goal was to build a company that could provide and equally deliver on that scale of impact for his clients. With his business now based in Hilton, he is happy to report how much it has grown since its humble beginnings in Greytown, KZN, “I’ve always believed in the power of great design and storytelling, and Face First Media lets me channel that passion into helping businesses stand out. Of course, none of this would be possible without my incredible team—their hard work and dedication are the backbone of

everything we do,” says Stevan. While running his business, Stevan is also a single dad of two amazing children, a son and a daughter.

Maintaining that work-life balance is important, and while it’s admittedly challenging to raise his children while running a business, it’s also an enriching experience. His children are his greatest motivation, and he always strives to lead by example and teach them the value of perseverance and hard work. One of the ways Stevan balances work and personal life is to stay active outside of work.

His hobbies have been part of key life lessons in focus and discipline. Among these include his Black Belt in Karate, he raced rally cars nationally, and competed in the Dakar Rally on a motorbike in 2023, an experience he described as “unforgettable”. Apart from the undoubted enjoyment Stevan has derived from these experiences, they have also reminded him that life is about pushing boundaries, both personally and professionally.

While motorsports are one of Stevan’s passions alongside running Face First Media, Wilken Motorsport, he explained, is more of a hobby and his way of staying connected to motorsports.

The future for Face First Media looks bright and Stevan plans on expanding its reach and working with bigger brands, which is part of what he loves about this business, “Working with brands that have big visions—helping them bring their messages to life in a bold way is what drives me,” he explains.

He is focused on continuing to push the boundaries of billboard advertising. “I want to keep creating bold campaigns that truly resonate with audiences. At the same time, I’m committed to staying humble and grounded. For me, success isn’t just about the business—it’s about being the best version of yourself in every area of life,” says Stevan.

Real Brides

Country Weddings

We shine the spotlight on three beautiful brides and their countryside weddings. Read more about their venues, décor, dresses, favourite moments, and more. If you’re a bride-to-be, we hope this inspires you as you plan your special day.

POOJA SINGH AND AMEEL BOBAT | PHOTOS ESTILO PHOTOGRAPHY

Pooja Singh & Ameel Bobat

Which venue did you choose and why?

Brahman Hills was our top choice from the start! After visiting, we explored a few other options, but our hearts remained set on Brahman Hills. Its flexibility accommodated our unique two-day celebration, featuring an intimate traditional ceremony and a larger civil ceremony and reception. Once we confirmed our dates, we quickly finalised our booking at Brahman Hills.

Tell us a bit about your décor Brahman Hills perfectly accommodated our multicultural wedding vision. We chose suppliers who shared our goal, including Weddings by Jackie for décor. As nature lovers, we wanted décor that complemented Brahman Hills’ natural beauty. We opted for simple yet elegant arrangements to enhance the venue’s charm.

Tell us a bit about the flowers/ floral arrangements

We chose soft pink, orange, ivory, and green hues for our traditional ceremony. For the civil ceremony and reception,

we added warmth with burgundy and rust tones. Jackie and Alexis beautifully executed our vision, creating lush arrangements. My bouquet, designed by Cinnamon and Lace, featured warm colours and pearl accents, perfectly complementing our overall aesthetic.

Who was part of your wedding party?

Our wedding party was our nearest and dearest family—our parents and siblings.

Tell us a bit about your fabulous dress

Although traditional Hindu brides wear red, I opted for ivory. I found a stunning lehenga in India, complete with a threemetre-long veil. For dinner, I changed into a lighter Payal Singhal design featuring mirror-work. My reception dress, by Seema Gujral, was a dream come true—fully adorned with pearls.

What was one challenge you faced?

It’s funny to think of one challenge when I am sure there were many, but none seem that important now!

What is your advice for future brides based on your experience?

Being the pedantic planners that we are, we were told to enjoy our wedding—and we truly did! It’s a culmination of hard work, bringing loved ones together, and celebrating your union. Our advice? Be present, cherish the small details, make the most of the celebration, and make time for photos!

Why did you choose the Midlands to get married?

The Midlands holds a special place in our hearts. Having spent many dates there, it felt familiar and comforting, especially since I’m from Pietermaritzburg. Its proximity to “home” made it an ideal destination for a weekend getaway that our guests could treasure.

What was your favourite moment?

We loved all of it! The warmth and love from all our guests were overwhelming. It was just so special seeing it all come together and for our families and friends to enjoy the personal touches.

Tracy & Richard Widdows

Which venue did you choose and why?

We wanted a lively wedding with our loved ones, so a micro wedding was never an option. We searched for venues with accommodation for our guests and a safe, private outdoor space for kids to enjoy. Having previously attended a wedding at Bellwood Cottages & Wedding Venue, I knew it suited our needs. After Richard viewed the venue, we knew it was the perfect choice!

Tell us a bit about your décor

Our wedding aesthetic was more about a vibe than a specific colour scheme— clean, yet colourful. We drew inspiration from the lilac-breasted roller, a bird associated with marriage in African cultures. This allowed us to incorporate a range of colours, including royal blues, navy, cream, purple, pink, and turquoise. We incorporated a lot of glass elements, such as unique shaped vases to let the colours pop, and glass underplates, which Mandy from Hello Bride thought to tuck flowers under!

Tell us a bit about the flowers/ floral arrangements

We chose a vibrant floral colour palette inspired by the lilac-breasted roller, with no restrictions on colours or textures. To tie everything together, we dyed the greenery navy blue, which

complemented our wedding party’s outfits perfectly. My bouquet was a lastminute addition, created by Flourish Flowers from a picture I found online. I wanted it to look like a freshly picked bunch of wildflowers.

Who was part of your wedding party?

Richard’s brother Craig served as both best man and officiant, accompanied by groomsmen Mackie and Calvin. My childhood best friend Leonie was my maid of honour, joined by bridesmaids Ann and Nicole.

Tell us about your fabulous dress

I found my dream dress at a boutique in Durban North. It was second-hand, but it fitted perfectly. The owner pulled it out for me to try on, and I was amazed by how it complemented my body shape. I felt wonderful, and I didn’t want to take it off! After trying on several other dresses, I knew this one was the one. We made a few alterations, including cutting off the train, and I’ve never regretted it.

What was one challenge you faced?

Choosing bridesmaid dresses was the most stressful part of wedding planning. With endless options, I wanted to ensure the ladies looked and felt amazing. I

joked, “They can’t upstage me, I’m the bride!” In the end, we opted for simple, scaled-back outfits that complemented each person’s style and body shape, paired with stunning hair and make-up by: Kimberly Kate Artistry (including Bride HMU) Rachel Sarah Artistry By Bianca Furnarello

What is your advice for future brides based on your experience?

Do exactly what you and your partner want. Don’t want a bouquet? Don’t get one. Want your husband’s brother to do your ceremony? Find a legal officiant who will go along with it. Want to get married on a Friday and ask people to take the day off work? Do it! Just do exactly what you want, you’ll have fun and the people who love you two will see that and also have fun.

Why did you choose the Midlands to get married?

This beautiful escape feels worlds away from the city’s hustle and bustle, yet it’s just a short and easy drive.

What was your favourite moment?

Seeing my husband-to-be at the end of the aisle, knowing this is our special moment and everyone we love is here right now watching us do this!

TRACY & RICHARD WIDDOWS
ROXANN AND WARREN GREEN | PHOTOS SKYE KYRA PHOTOGRAPHY

Roxann & Warren Green

They say your wedding day is one of the best days in your life and while I never truly believed how one day in a white dress could be all that but I must admit, our wedding day will forever be one of my favourite days ever.

How did you meet: I am sure you’ve heard married couples tell you throughout your life when you ask them the secret recipe to finding the one, “when you know, you know” and as I always thought, LOL. Like what on earth does that mean? What will I know? I have way too many questions to live my life simply waiting to meet my husband on a feeling of ominous “knowing”. And then one day, you match with a man on a bumble (online dating for those born before online anything), he takes you on a date and all of a sudden it clicks and “you know.”

I believe this “when you know feeling” is more about knowing that you have found someone you are willing to choose every single day, willing to compromise for and willing to fight like hell for because life without them isn’t really an option, they are your person, your forever.

And that is how we came to this day on 22 June 2024 - the day that I married my best friend. Maybe I am the minority to say I didn’t grow up dreaming of my wedding day, I wasn’t the girl with the Pinterest boards and the list of what the day needed to look like. As long as Warren was the guy

at the end of the aisle, that’s all I truly cared about.

The challenge

I will be the first to admit, getting engaged and then moving overseas together and trying to plan our wedding from a different country is not up there on the “greatest ideas ever” list and probably caused us a bit more stress than the average person. But to me, this wedding was never about what it looked like, it wasn’t about the venue, décor colour or TikToks, it was about the people, the moments, the memories - that was my dream.

Why did I love that we chose Haycroft as our venue so much? Because we found a place that could accommodate most of our wedding guests so we could make a weekend out of it and spend time with the people we miss so dearly while living in Amsterdam. Also, it had a very pretty FOREST CHAPEL, which was a wish list item from Warren so, win.

Why will I forever cherish this said pretty forest chapel? Because I had the honour of having my Dad walk me down the aisle and then Gordon, my now fatherin-law, marry me to his son.

Why did I love my dress? Because I decided to try on a few dresses while visiting my parents in Texas to get an idea of what I liked and ended up having the best day with my mom trying on what felt

like 100 dresses, having wingstop lunch in between with my Mom and Dad, so I didn’t get hangry and then after going to one more shop and finding my “dream dress”. Putting it on and knowing that I could not leave without it, calling my Dad in to see it and seeing his face. Also, it was very pretty and the absolute perfect dress for me, so again, win.

Why did I love our first dance so much? Because Warren and I were sitting on the couch in Amsterdam listening to country music when we decided that “Tennessee Whiskey” would be our wedding song, because we both loved it so much and no other song would even come close to being as perfect.

Why did I love the décor, flowers and colours for the wedding? When we were in Texas, Mom and I sat on the couch for hours going through Pinterest, talking, laughing, and finding everything we loved from colours and runners to baby’sbreath flowers.

The Moment: It goes without saying that there are so many moments, some we simply wish to keep as our own, others that simply wouldn’t do the moment justice typing it out and so to pick one moment that was my favourite is quite literally impossible - it was every moment leading up to this day and on the day that all made it the best day ever, that I will cherish forever.

OPENING PHOTO JESSE GADEMAN PHOTOGRAPHY

While there are a lot of hats to wear as a wedding planner, what is your biggest focus that brings it all together?

My main focus is making sure the couple can relax and enjoy themselves, and to soak in every moment without worrying about the details! When I see them during their first dance, I know I’ve done my job well—it’s the best feeling!

How do you handle all the moving parts to ensure the couple has a perfect day?

I’ve learned to break the day into bite-sized chunks and make sure everyone—vendors, staff, family—knows exactly what needs to happen and when. It’s all about being organised behind the scenes.

What is the funniest/weirdest thing you have had to manage at a wedding?

Oh, definitely the time the groom forgot his vow book at home (three and a half hours from home!) and had to ask his darling landlord to send photos of the vows, so we could print it at the venue, all whilst sewing our sweet bride into her dress after she had a malfunction moments before the ceremony—all in a day’s work!

How do you best handle the expected and unexpected at a wedding?

I always go in with a Plan A, B, and sometimes even C! I make sure there are backups for everything and that I have thought through each aspect of the couple’s day.

How do you keep calm under wedding pressure knowing everyone is relying on you?

Being prepared is key! I spend weeks planning everything so that by the time the wedding comes around, I can rely on the system I’ve put in place. Staying calm helps everyone else stay calm too, and when little things go wrong, I handle them quietly and quickly, so no one even notices.

What are your BIG wedding do’s and don’ts?

Do: Trust your wedding coordinator or planner! We’ve done this many times, and we’re here to make sure things go smoothly. Don’t: Worry about the little things. I truly mean it, your guests are there to celebrate with you—they won’t notice if one thing doesn’t go as planned. Focus on enjoying your day. Do: Hire reputable vendors and then trust them! The most incredible weddings have been those where the couple have trusted their team and allowed them to suggest, create and capture. Don’t: Overdo the DIY’s, we’ve seen it over and over again, no matter how organised you are! Pick some small key aspects that you would like to do and then hire a trusted vendor for the bulk of the tasks.

What are some of the lessons you’ve learned as a wedding planner? Always over-communicate. I’ve learned that assuming people know something can lead to miscommunication. And when things don’t go as expected, it’s important to stay flexible and manage accordingly. With a smile always!

What do you love about weddings in the Midlands?

The scenery is breathtaking—those rolling hills and open skies create the most beautiful backdrop. Plus, there’s something so peaceful about the area that helps everyone relax and enjoy the day more fully.

What do you love most about your job?

Seeing the couple’s visions come together. But what I love even more is seeing the couple’s faces light up when they realise they’re actually married and their day has been everything they imagined. It’s the ultimate reward for me; it’s a great day at the “office”!

Can you share one of your favourite/ special moments you love at weddings?

When I get to fluff my bride’s dress as I send her on towards her forever! Pure magic! Goosebumps every time even after all these years!

Is there anything else you would like to add or share?

Weddings are all about creating memories that last a lifetime. Every couple is different, and I love tailoring each wedding to fit their personalities. My goal is to make sure they can be fully present, relaxed, and focused on their love, their people and happiness. Enjoy your wedding planning journey and don’t get so bogged down by small things that you miss the magic!

LOCAL CUTIES Love

We caught up with a few of our countryside residents, but not the human ones. Meet a few of our hoofed, feathered, and furry friends who make our Midlands even more magical!

WORDS ALICIA DU PLESSIS

The Midlands' idyllic mountain vistas and countryside are home to a cast of lovable characters – from roaming cows and grazing horses to cuddly dogs. These local cuties, wild and tame, make this area the charming destination it is. We'd like to introduce you to a few of these furry friends, and hopefully, inspire your next Midlands getaway.

GET YOUR ALPACA FIX

Endeavour Alpacas is an Alpaca sanctuary in Curry’s Post. Harry and Prince were the first to arrive on the farm 16 years ago from Duck ’n Deck in Hillcrest. The owner, Terrence Watkins, always enjoys sharing his joke that they never “laid any eggs for a few years” until he learned they were both boys all along! Their latest rescue is Lucy, who apparently, has the most

beautiful eyelashes. Other animals you will most likely spot during your visit are their adorable cats, dogs, and a parrot named Mango. If you would like to immerse yourself in more wildlife, their hiking trails will lead you through protected grassland where you may be able to see either duiker or reedbuck.

DID SOMEONE SAY GOATS?

Swissland Cheese in Balgowan began as a small artisanal cheesery and agriculture tourism venue in 1992. Over the years, it wasn’t just the milk and cheese that drew visitors, but also the goats. Generations of goats have made Swissland what it is today, and each one has a name. For example, Viola, who has since passed, was one of the most photographed. She had three generations of offspring: Elsie, Rosie, and Pip. The Nigerian Dwarf goat Spotty,

joined the Swissland family a few years ago and became the mascot. The baby goats are some of the most playful and fun animals, and visitors can engage with them by feeding them. Organised walks with the goats can also be arranged on request. If you want to enjoy even more goats, witness them giving birth during the winter months or you can spot the newborns, or “little bouncies”, hop around on the rocks. The entry fee is R50 and you can spend a day playing and enjoying time with the goats. While the Swissland cheese shop is no longer open, you are advised to bring your packed picnic basket and relax and enjoy the beautiful views and tree swings with family or friends.

ANYONE FOR A HORSEY HOLIDAY?

While Stormy Hill Horse Trails in Boston, is a horse ranch, of which there are nine horses, they are also a haven for spotted pigs, cats, dogs, ducks, and chickens. Most of the horses have been born and bred at Stormy Hill and range from ponies to “gentle giants”, as they are called. They have friendly personalities and love interactions with visitors, especially taking them out on the trail rides—all experience levels are welcomed. You can also join the owner, Caroline, and the dogs on a walk to herd the horses down the hill for their feeding time. If you’ve always wanted to learn more about horses, you can do a “horsey holiday” as Caroline describes it. This includes a bit of everything, from grooming, groundwork, and riding on the horse trails with Caroline and the dogs. You will learn how to bond with your horse through the groundwork training and the “Thinking Horse” programme. This is the best place to get started—no pressure, just fun!

forget the humans). All keep the farm running successfully and smoothly, but it’s not always all work and no play, there are equal moments of laughter and love shared. So, without further ado, let’s meet the team, shall we? A few gorgeous goats are part of Bramleigh Farm’s milking team: Shirley, Freya, Speckles, Misty, and Perdy. Pineapple is on maternity leave raising her endearingly called “tropical trio” babies: Coconut, Mango, and Orange. The goats joined the farm in 2020 and have

helped as browsers with the ability to access hard-to-reach areas, notably invasive plant species like bugweed and brambles. They also offer the most delicious fresh and frothy warm milk, a real treat every morning. Rex, the Anatolian Shepherd dog, loves to keep a watchful eye on the goats. Next up are Freida and Muddy Pig, who are part of the bramble-bashing crew. They soften the soil and trample in seeds as they keep moving around, which keeps the soil healthy and flourishing.

FARM FRESH FRIENDS

Bramleigh Farm in Nottingham Road boasts a family of animals (and let’s not

Then there’s Tigger the rooster and his ladies, they provide the most nutritious golden yolked eggs. There are also cattle on the farm, but they are always busy at work and way too busy for cuddles. If you’re wondering how to get in on the action, a cottage is available on the farm for guests to stay in and enjoy a weekend with the whole team. You can join the morning rounds, watch the milking and sample fresh milk, collect eggs, and feed the chickens and pigs. Farm tours for the kiddies are also available during school holidays.

HORNS AND HORIZONS

Netherwood Farm is nestled in Nottingham Road and overlooks the Drakensberg mountains. You’re bound to bump into a few cuties at the farm, like Jasmin, the resident cat, who is endearingly referred to as the “sgabengu” of Blueberry Café. She is a rescue cat and has made it her home for eight years. She loves cuddles, so

ensure you are ready for some when you see her! There are also runner ducks. They love to wander the gardens, sunbathe on a warm day, and swim in the mini ponds. The chickens love their spacious coups and are always fun for the children visiting.

You will also encounter a few larger cuties: a herd of long-horn Ankole or Nguni, the champion Angus studs, and Alpacas, which roam around the restaurants. You might catch a glimpse of one of the Ngunis from the famous bathroom windows, but don’t worry, no one can see inside!

WHO DOESN’T LOVE DONKEYS?

Yellowwood Café in Howick has been in business for 22 years and have had many animals since then. Currently, they have three donkeys, namely Ozzy, Onushka, and Otto, and one miniature pony, Blondie, but you will have a ball of a time when you visit them. While you can only give them cuddles through the fence, you can also feed them carrots— they will love that! You can bring carrots when you visit or purchase a few on the premises. There is also outdoor seating available so you can spend as much time with these cuties as you want.

A HAPPY HOME

Horse Shoe Bend on Curry’s Post Road opened in September 2024 and offers a countryside lifestyle centre. With

this, they have a few of their family members who keep the premises filled with laughter and fun. Meet Gracie and Jack, their two fluffy rabbits, definitely worth a cuddle! Their 10 ducks, or as they are endearingly called “happy white waddlers”, whom you will be able to spot in their pond.

Faith is their pony and can carry up to 80 kg. She is known for her gentle nature. There are four miniature horses:

Snowy, who is their white mare; Ily, who is also a mare and mother to Momo, who is their baby “with a fro”; and lastly, Ozzy, their gelding, who can carry up to 45 kg. They also have a peacock and peahen. Guests are allowed to feed the ducks, pet the rabbits, and ride the miniature horses and pony, except for Momo who is still a baby.

A New Era

OF INTEGRATED LIVING IN HILTON

Sean Moffatt, Co-Principal of Seeff Midlands and Seeff Pietermaritzburg tells us more about this family-focused lifestyle precinct that captures the essence of Hilton.

The Avenues Hilton is a project driven by family-owned JT Ross Property Group who have just celebrated an impressive 122 years in operation. JT Ross is a long-standing supporter of Hilton and the Hilton College community.

The Avenues, a family-focused lifestyle precinct captures the essence of Hilton. It offers a convenient outdoor shopping centre, the boutique Avenues Estate, and an upcoming office park which will likely

begin development this year (2025). The idea of the precinct is to create a fresh new space for the growing Hilton community. The Avenues Estate welcomes a diverse range of residents; from families and young couples to retirees; all are able to benefit from the harmonious blend of a picturesque farmland environment and modern conveniences.

Once completed, the Estate will have around 120 homes in total. Some stunning

homes have already been completed and are available for viewing by appointment with Seeff Midlands. Investors have the option to purchase pre-built homes, or acquire freehold land to build a home tailored to their needs and preferences.

This boutique estate holds a special place in my heart. I was among the first to purchase a site here, along with several of my friends. The setting and views are simply superb, the land boasts stunning views of the Karkloof, nearby Mondi

forests, and lush green pastures. It’s an incredibly relaxing and tranquil setting. The proximity to some of the country’s finest schools makes it especially appealing for families. The Avenue Estate’s location is unbeatable with easy access to The Avenues Shopping Centre, restaurants, coffee shops, and the Hilton Life Hospital.

The Avenue Estate also has world-class security—24hr guards, controlled access, and electric fencing. Hilton is a growth node, and The Avenues Estate, with its shared boundaries with Wedgewood and Garlington, offers the perfect blend of living, working, and socialising in one area. Once completed, the landscaping will be magnificent, complemented by a community centre, walking paths, and views for sundowners. The Mondi forest is also accessible for walking and cycling, adding to a home owner’s appeal.

The up-market estate will appeal to doctors working at the nearby Life hospital, parents with children attending schools in Hilton, Howick, and Pietermaritzburg, and existing residents of the wider Midlands and Pietermaritzburg area who might be seeking greater security, a stronger sense of community, and the convenience of nearby shops and other facilities. The Avenues Estate offers freestanding

homes and freehold land designed within an architectural code that is fairly non-restrictive, and allows for personal customisation. The developer’s Orchard homes exhibit contemporary designs with geometric lines and flat roofs, while upcoming pitched roof homes offer a slightly different aesthetic—yet complement each other well. This variety ensures there’s something to suit everyone’s preference.

What must also be noted is that the estate is pet friendly, and the community

centre will allow entertainment for families all year round—whilst not having the hassle of maintaining your own pool.

Most sites are already levelled and fully serviced. Those who invest early can anticipate capital growth as the development progresses and Hilton continues to bloom.

There are a couple of items that can go a long way like their handcrafted Nguni hide leather wallet. It’s perfect for the man in your life, to add that extra stylised touch. But if you want to spoil your special person, why not opt for something cosier like their sheepskin slippers or a plush sheepskin to drape over a couch or place at the bedside? These are always a winner and perfect prep for the oncoming cold season. Other goodies are their chic leather backpacks and handbags, which can function for work or leisure, and they will last you a lifetime! Men, this is one for the woman in your life.

For both the adventure and peace seekers, if your idea of a Valentine’s gift looks more like an activity, we have you covered! The Karkloof Canopy Tour zipline takes you through the Karkloof Mistbelt Forest and will be a fun challenge for all participants, and couples can get to know each other on a new level, quite literally! But there’s no pressure, this occasion is all about fun and the surrounding forest offers the best walks, especially if you would like to keep to the ground, along the stream that goes up to a nearby waterfall. You can have a picnic and soak up the fresh air. Couples have also chosen Karkloof Canopy Tour to pop the question (wink wink).

This getaway replenishes your mind, body, and soul with boutique accommodation, a threecourse dinner at the acclaimed Skye Bistro restaurant, and luxurious pampering. Honeymoon Adventures

We checked in with three newlyweds and how they decided to spend their honeymoons, and if you are planning yours, we hope this can offer some more inspiration and ideas.

Danielle & Liam Lötter

When and where did you get married?

Liam and I are from Kamberg, and we got married on August 10, 2024, at the gorgeous Rosemary Hill in Pretoria. Our wedding day passed in what felt like an instant, yet it was absolutely perfect—a true celebration of love, joy, and togetherness.

Tell us more about why you chose this specific honeymoon destination

Liam and I were torn between a trip to Ireland or an African road trip for our honeymoon. In the end, we chose what felt most like us—a road trip. To make it extra special, we decided to buy Liam’s dream car, a Suzuki Jimny, for the journey. And instead of traditional wedding gifts, we asked our guests to contribute camping gear and funds for essentials like petrol and food for our adventure. We planned to start from our wedding venue, Rosemary Hill, with our first stop at Skukuza Camp

in the Kruger National Park for two days. From there, we would head off on a beach holiday, making multiple stops along Mozambique’s coastline. It was a trip designed to be unforgettable.

Tell us about some of your adventures

Our time in Kruger National Park was the perfect balance of adventure and tranquillity. Being together in such a vast, serene space felt incredibly special—a time we will always cherish. We spent our days exploring the park, enjoying quiet moments with the animals and quality time with each other. Sadly, we were involved in a head-on collision, and two

locals stopped to help us and towed the Jimny to a safe location for the evening. The next day, Coen and Alta, who became our guardian angels, took us to our Jimny, and helped us recover before sending us home in their car. Despite the terrifying accident, we’re grateful to be alive and are now planning Honeymoon 2.0 for 2025.

TRAVEL TIPS

• My best advice is to get travel insurance. We had to cancel accommodation and deal with broken items from the crash, but we were able to recover some of the costs because of our travel insurance. It made a stressful situation much more manageable.

Tersia & Scott McNair

When and where did you get married?

Our dream was always to have a unique wedding venue with a garden party aesthetic and Fable Café and Eatery was just that for us.

Tell us more about why you chose this specific honeymoon destination

We love travelling overseas but agreed that after the stress of a wedding, layovers, boarding gates and long-haul flights were not on the cards for us so we focussed our attention locally. We chose a safari at Nambiti Plains Lodge, which was the perfect option for us!

What were some of the highlights?

Waking up in the middle of the night to lion calls! Even though they were probably far away, the calls were so loud it sounded like they were right outside our suite’s patio.

TRAVEL TIPS

• A special gesture on a honeymoon like a candlelight dinner, or a bottle of bubbles delivered to the room goes a long way! Remember to schedule in some lazy time even on an adventurous honeymoon!

My husband’s highlight was having a gin while surrounded by five young giraffes (his favourite animal), followed by a dip in the pool, and watching the buffalo drink from the watering hole in front of the lodge.

Tell us about some of your adventures

During a game drive, we got stuck in some muddy tracks and not one, but two recovery vehicles followed suit, requiring a third vehicle to rescue us. I needed multiple reassurances that the risk of us becoming lion food was minimal.

Did you find the duration sufficient for what you wanted to do?

Due to work commitments we only had a week, but I would recommend 10-14 days. The “wind down” and decompression you need after a wedding should not be squeezed into such a short space, but I could not think of a better place to do that than in the bush!

How long after the wedding was your honeymoon?

We started our honeymoon immediately by booking into Fordoun Spa on the Sunday after our wedding. I would highly recommend something similar to every couple exploring honeymoon options, starting the honeymoon with a few relaxing massages really puts you into holiday mode.

Is there any advice you can share for couples who are still planning “The Honeymoon”?

Take your time to discuss what both your expectations are, how much time you are willing to set aside for travel, and be willing to compromise!

Discuss the pros and cons of a local and destination trip. Remember to look at options like full board and/or selfcatering.

Zulieka & Jameel

Ahmed Vorajee

When and where did you get married?

We had a traditional nikah (Muslim marriage) on 13 May 2022 at the Westville Jaame’ Musjid Mosque in Westville, Durban. Our reception was held on the 15 of May 2022 at the Reservoir Hills Islamic Centre which was a special venue as my family and I lived in that area.

Tell us more about why you chose this specific honeymoon destination

My husband suggested some options for our honeymoon, and we discussed them a lot before finally deciding on Phuket, Thailand. We chose the destination mostly because of the amazing scenery and activities, and we stayed at the Gracelands Resort on Patong Beach.

What were some of the highlights?

This was our first trip together, internationally, so it was quite exciting. The highlights of the trip were our guided tour in Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay, we got to see beautiful scenery, went snorkelling, and ate authentic Thai cuisine. We did another day trip to the Big Buddha and Phuket Old Town, a lovely place to do some shopping and indulge in great restaurants and cafés.

Tell us about some of your adventures

We explored Bangla Walking Road, a market with restaurants and coffee shops where you can experience Thai cuisine. We enjoyed a spa day at the resort and booked a private tour of Coral Island. We kayaked and snorkelled, and even tried parasailing for the first time! We also

experienced the local nightlife with walks and a thrilling Tuk Tuk ride which was an experience in itself as they had loud music and were decorated with funky neon lights.

Did you find the duration sufficient for what you wanted to do?

It was 10 days long. I think two weeks would have been perfect, but I really enjoyed the time we spent there.

TRAVEL TIPS

• Don’t schedule a job interview for the day after your reception!

• Try out different travel agents and tour groups and get a few quotes before you decide which one you are going to go with.

• Find a resort or hotel that you are happy with and see if you can do the booking by yourself.

• Plan to do any vaccinations in advance if necessary.

• Double-check Visa requirements for the destination.

• Choose a location near amenities and within walking distance to any attractions you would like to visit if possible, to save on travelling costs.

How long after the wedding was your honeymoon?

Two days after our reception, I moved to Pietermaritzburg permanently, so I really needed some time to settle in before the trip.

Ironically, I also had a job interview the day after the reception which amused my husband to no end. He drove me there as I had no idea where the venue was located.

Things to Say

From a timeless tradition...

Hi, future brides! As you’re ticking off the last few items on your wedding checklist, we’ve got some sentimental ideas to make your big day even more special. Let’s talk about the tradition of “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”—and how to give it a modern twist!

Does your Mom or Gran still have her wedding dress? If you’re not planning to wear it, why not repurpose it into a stunning bridal robe for your getting-ready photos? It’s a heartfelt way to honour their love story while creating a keepsake of your own. (Bonus: it checks off

“something old” and “something new”!) Need “something old”? A dainty charm featuring your maiden initials attached to your bouquet is a sweet nod to your past as you embrace your future.

For “something new,” consider a meaningful piece of jewellery gifted by your husband-tobe or a pair of bespoke wedding shoes from Kaeco, handcrafted, customisable designs, made locally. You’ll walk confidently down the aisle and dance the night away in shoes that are stunning.

Need “something borrowed”? Wear a piece of jewelry, or hair pieces are easy items

to include from one of your closest family members or friends.

Now for “something blue”! A TikTokinspired idea we love: have your mom wear a beautiful blue outfit to symbolise your “something blue”. Want to take it a step further? Include your mother-in-law in this tradition—if your colour scheme does not allow for this, a garter with blue on/in it, is also an easy fix …

The tradition: “The objects are tokens of good luck and traditionally are given to the bride at the eleventh hour by their mother, sister, other relatives or wedding party attendants.”

A Journey Through the KwaZulu-Natal Countryside

As a person with a penchant for adventure, I was initially sceptical about the Corolla Cross. Sure, it looked sleek and modern, but could it really handle the winding roads and diverse terrain of the Howick to Underberg route? I decided to find out.

The Toyota Corolla Cross XS Hybrid effortlessly bridges the gap between urban practicality and rural adventure, making it a strong contender for drivers exploring South Africa’s scenic routes. I recently took this model on a solo journey from Howick to the Underberg, the Corolla Cross proved to be an ideal companion. The quiet roads and picturesque views provided the perfect setting to appreciate the vehicle fully.

As I ascended the winding roads towards the Underberg, the hybrid system proved its efficiency. During deceleration, the regenerative braking system captured

energy in the battery to power the electric motor, resulting in an impressive fuel economy. The hybrid powertrain blends electric and petrol power, providing a sleek driving experience. The engine intervenes seamlessly when needed, ensuring a tranquil journey. Meanwhile, the electric motor delivers instant torque, enabling effortless acceleration, whether merging onto the highway or overtaking slower traffic.

The Corolla Cross’s suspension strikes a balance between comfort and control. It absorbs road imperfections with ease, allowing a smooth ride even on less-thanperfect countryside roads. The steering offers sufficient feedback, making the vehicle feel nimble and responsive. The interior of the Corolla Cross XS Hybrid is a pleasant place to be; the seats are comfortable and supportive, making a long journey less strenuous, however, the rear seats could be a bit cramped for

taller passengers on longer journeys. The infotainment system is user-friendly, with a clear display and responsive touchscreen, putting on the perfect road trip playlist is done with ease! While the Corolla Cross is not a dedicated off-roader, its raised ground clearance and all-wheel-drive system make it capable of handling light off-road excursions. The vehicle’s compact size and excellent visibility make it easy to manoeuvre in tight spaces, such as narrow country lanes.

In conclusion, the Toyota Corolla Cross XS Hybrid is an excellent choice for those seeking a comfortable, efficient, and versatile vehicle for long and short-distance driving. Its quiet cabin, smooth ride, and impressive fuel economy make it a pleasure to drive, whether on the open road or exploring the scenic byways of KwaZulu-Natal.

Take healing into your own hands

Did you know that you can take healing into your own hands? You don’t need any qualifications or experience. Within one month of working on yourself, you will notice remarkable improvements. By continuing to put in the effort, you can eventually repair your gut and “rewire” your brain, upgrading the quality of your life. Adverse symptoms and diagnoses can begin to change and may even fall away over time. Energy levels improve, brain fog lifts, and you may lose weight if carrying excess.

For some, this may seem unattainable or too good to be true, but I speak from experience after overcoming significant health challenges. I achieved this not through medication or surgical procedures but by working on myself. To cut a long story short, after extensive medical investigation, I faced a diagnosis of lupus (an autoimmune disorder) and then stage four endometriosis, where my endometrial tissue had attached to my bowels and my cancer blood markers were high. I refused all the recommended treatments and embarked on a journey of healing, learning, shedding, growing, upgrading, and now sharing this with others.

The gut-brain connection is crucial for good health, influencing physical and emotional well-being. Our diet and emotional stability are intertwined; negative emotions affect our bodies! The vagus nerve links the gut and brain, and a disrupted connection can lead to imbalances and illness.

So, how can we start repairing the vagus nerve?

• Splash your face with cold water upon waking.

• Apply daily cold compresses to the side and the back of your neck.

• Make time for self-reflection, journaling, and walking in nature.

• Learn how to control and slow your breathing (Pranayama/ Breath control).

• Compliment others: this will elevate your oxytocin levels and help others.

• Gut health plays a significant role in immune response and serotonin production. Ultimately, unaddressed emotional burdens can manifest as physical health issues.

All of the above helps reduce cortisol (stress hormone) levels and nourishes the vagus nerve. In conjunction with the above tips, here are a few extra tips that you can start with now:

• Eat a whole-food diet (avoid processed foods like TBHQ, Aspartame, and other nasties (research ingredients to educate yourself).

• Investigate intermittent fasting (a nutritionist can help you).

• Cut out sugar, dairy, and wheat.

• Reduce caffeine intake and get off soda drinks!

• Turn to meditation to tame the wild horses of your mind.

• Practise mindfulness and daily gratitude. When a negative thought arises, think of a positive one and practise gratefulness, this instantly enhances serotonin and dopamine (neurotransmitters responsible for happiness).

The good news is that we can heal ourselves, so if we start with these changes, our lives will change instantly!

Finding Community in The Kamberg

For many people, the first time they heard of the Kamberg was when news broke of Tom Cruise’s three-month stay at the beautiful and secluded Qambathi Mountain Lodge while filming Mission: Impossible—Final Reckoning in 2022. This was no doubt a boost to the area’s broader tourism appeal but it was by no means something new to the numerous families who have called the area home or who have been visiting for decades.

The Kamberg is truly one of the most beautiful destinations in South Africa, accented by majestic mountains, flowing grasslands, sparkling dams and rivers, and fertile farmlands. There’s a good reason why locals describe The Kamberg Valley as the place that God created when he’d practised on the rest of the world. Culturally, it has an incredibly diverse heritage. The San, Khoi, and Bantu people have all called the area home, followed by newer residents including some of the early Voortrekkers and later numerous British settlers.

The broader Kamberg Nature Reserve forms part of the Maloti-Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site and is situated centrally in the foothills of the mountains. The reserve was proclaimed in 1951 and is 6300ha in extent. The park offers sightings of baboons, reedbuck, oribi, duiker and large herds of the impressive eland as well as abundant birdlife. In particular, the area is renowned for its impressive collection of San rock paintings created over a period of at least 4000 years. The rock paintings are outstanding in quality and diversity representing the spiritual life of the San people who no longer live in the region. The Kamberg San Rock Art Trail coupled with the Interpretive Centre will help visitors understand and interpret the more than 40 000 San Bushman images found in the UkhahlambaDrakensberg Park. One of our favourite destinations to enjoy the area is

Glengarry Holiday Farm. Family-owned for over 40 years, the self-catering or camping options are perfect as a base to explore everything the Kamberg has to offer. Incidentally, they are even more famous for their fresh bread rolls, which are a must-have if you’re ever in the neighbourhood.

Whilst the natural beauty, history, agricultural and hospitality enterprises are what the area is best known for, there is something far more important that makes this place so special, and that is the sense of community. Admittedly, as a non-resident, I’m not the most qualified person to write about the community, but I have been fortunate to have been hosted by friends on a number of occasions and witnessed first-hand how the people of the Kamberg work together and celebrate their close-knit relationship. At the heart of this is The Kamberg Valley Association which has been actively looking out for the interests of residents in the area since 1919. The home of the KVA is the Kamberg Club, a community-run central meeting point for monthly get-togethers, special occasions, clay pigeon shooting and other events such as the iconic Kamberg Outdoor Challenge, best described as a weekend of fishing, shooting and games. The Club is also one of the few places where generally there are more people behind the bar than in front of it, but that’s because volunteer barmen are supposedly allowed to drink for free. Whatever the truth, the club is well-worth a visit and an awesome reminder of what a real community looks like.

So if you want to find out what Tom was waxing lyrical about after his stay, a trip to this part of the world will certainly not disappoint.

There’s a good reason why locals describe The Kamberg Valley as the place that God created when he’d practised on the rest of the world
