August is women's month and also the last month of our "winter", before spring shows us her beauty again. It is probably my favourite time of the year in KZn (even though I am very much a SUMMER girl) the cooler weather is a nice reprieve! In this edition, we unpack quite a bit, we get some insight into Counter Coffee - situated in Ballito Church, right here in Seaward Estates! We chat to co-owners Luke and Amy who have created a work-friendly coffee shop with Wi-Fi. They also have a kitchen under construction and will be serving up delicious meals soon.
Our cool Seaward Community got together and collected a few goodies for the SPCA who received a generous amount of support on Mandela Day. We meet the lovely Victor family, who recently moved from Pietermaritzburg to Ballito with their daughters and two fur babies. They give us some insight into their lives and the new local business they opened. We have also included a PART 1 (feature) about crowned eagles, this is pertinent and informative as there are currently crowned eagles within the Seaward/Zimbali estates. So without any panic about your pets - information is key! From the KZn Midlands, Granny Mouse Country House and Spa shares with us a spicy squash soup with carrottop pesto to keep warm and healthy this winter.
While every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the contents FABMAGS cannot be held responsible for any omission or errors, or for any misfortune, injury or damages that may arise there from. FabMags is a privately owned and funded company and is not subsidized by Seaward Estate or the SEMHOA.
And obviously, closing the month out we had to do a feature on three remarkable local women in business who are in the health and food industry. Any business owner doing well needs to be shared and celebrated! It's inspiring for sure! Also, the new estate manager, Rieva McMurtrie, will introduce herself to us in the next edition! Exciting times! In the meantime, we are excited to have her on board.

Below are the pictures of a successful drop-off at the SPCA for Mandela Day. We held the donations for two days, the 18th and 19th July 2024, and received outstanding support from our residents.
Meet Clyde and Des-Marie, and their kids (both human and furry) they share why they chose a coastal retreat at Seaward Estates.
We are the Victor family. We moved from Pietermaritzburg to Seaward Estates in Ballito at the beginning of June 2024,
leaving the city life behind for a coastal retreat.
Our family consists of dad, Clyde; mom, Des-Marie; daughters, Lacey and Amber; as well as our two dogs,
Sable and Snoopy. Clyde is a very serious and hard working guy, and having had a panel beating business in Pietermaritzburg for over 20 years, means he knows everything about fixing cars.
I, Des-Marie, am a bit hyperactive and a bit quirky, always seeing the lighter side of life. I had left my job as a sales manager at Suzuki Pietermaritzburg, to assist Clyde in opening up a new panel beating business here in Ballito, named "My Paneel Klopper".
Both of us have a bit of OCD, so everything always has to be done right and be clean and neat. We both love renovating as well, be it our home or cars. Our hobby is off-road rallying and we absolutely love racing through the farmlands on race days.
21-years-old, lives her own life in Westville, making Lacey the only one living at home in Seaward Estates. Amber loves anything wildlife and nature related, while also being creative and artsy. Lacey has settled into life here nicely and she attends Curro Salt Rock. She is extremely competitive and excels both in academics and in sports.
Amber is the oldest of our daughters and being
Sable is almost nine-yearsold, and is a very loving and playful old lady. Snoopy is a four-year-old boy and lives up to the Chihuahua name, being extremely protective of me, his mom.
We chose Seaward Estates for its beautiful views, safety, and location. Being so close to everything one needs is fantastic. Coming from Pietermaritzburg, Ballito seems like another world in comparison.
We hope to become part of the Ballito community and enjoy many happy years here.
An En-Counter with Coffee
Did you know there’s a coffee shop right here in Seaward?
We visited Counter Coffee and got to experience the wonderful atmosphere and delicious coffee!
Situated in Ballito City Church, on Sarah Road, is Counter Coffee. Open most days, with Wi-Fi and a cosy atmosphere, you can spend your days working from there when you need some time out of the office or house.
Behind the counter is Luke, who recently took over the cafe. He has loved working with coffee from his childhood when he used to brew drinks under the guidance of his grandfather. Even now, he thinks of making coffee as a way of keeping that bond they had alive. When you take the first sip of a good cappuccino (even the decaf version) you can sense the love and care put into every pour and stir.
The name was inspired by the church’s previous name and the little counter they have where you can place your orders. They have a great drinks menu, all made fresh by co-owners Luke and Amy. You can choose from coffees, teas, and lattes. Right now, they have a range of snacks to accompany your drink. Cookies made locally by All Around Creations, milk or white chocolate chips, are available and other snacks like packets of chips and little chocolates.
However, they are planning to expand their offering to include meals very
soon. Currently under construction, is a kitchen where they will be able to make meals to go with your delicious drinks. The cafe is open most days during the week, and Luke strives to create an environment where everyone feels welcome and comes to enjoy the space they have created. They are also open on Friday nights and during events held at the church.
Pop in and check it out for yourself! They also have discounts on all their drinks on Sundays, if you need another reason to have coffee.

Crowned Eagles
F REEME W ILDLIFE R EHABILITATIO n
‘Working together to enrich lives’
Part 1
VISION
To be a world-class, selfsustaining rehabilitation facility for indigenous wildlife in Southern Africa, using the “One Health” approach, whilst maintaining the highest ethical standards and furthering conservation by playing a role in engaging with wildlife professionals, volunteers, learners, and members of the public.
PET ATTACKS
While pet and livestock attacks from Crowned Eagles do occur, they are few and far between. When taken into context of the population density of the eagles, and the number of prey they need to hunt each year, pet and livestock predations make up an incredibly small percentage of their diet.
Winter is a difficult time for these young birds to survive, especially since
inexperienced juveniles are dispersing from their natal territories during the winter and early spring while parent birds prepare for the new breeding season. Small dogs and cats are the pets most commonly killed, as by size and colour they resemble natural prey, and it is not surprising that the young, inexperienced birds classify them in the same food category as monkeys, hyrax, and small duiker.
While it can be emotionally devastating for a pet owner to lose a beloved pet to
Crowned Eagle predation, it is important to remember that there is no malicious intent behind the eagle’s actions, and that hunting for food is simply a matter of survival for these young predators.
PROTECTION OF PETS
The health and safety of a pet is the sole responsibility of a pet owner. Many pet owners are fully aware of this, and when their pet is killed in the safety of their own yard by a wild predator, they don’t only feel anger
and grief, but a sense of guilt and helplessness at their inability to protect their pet. Prevention is better than cure, and making provision for the protection of a pet before a possible predation attempt is far more sensible than wanting the perpetrator dead after the incident has happened.
AwARENESS
Knowing beforehand if the area you live in is home to a pair of Crowned Eagles is key to weighing up the risks of owning small pets in the area. Breeding sites for Crowned Eagles are closely associated with natural forests, particularly near streams or rivers.
While attacks by dispersing juvenile and subadult birds may be difficult to predict, adult pairs of Crowned Eagles are territorial and will remain within their home range.
Although it is often requested by bereaved pet owners that the eagles be caught and moved, this is simply not a viable option. The eagles are extremely difficult to catch, and even if moved, they'll fly hundreds of kilometres back
to their territory as proved by previous attempts in the past. While cutting a nest tree down before a new breeding season is underway is another suggestion made (and sometimes implemented), the surrounding area will continue to remain the resident pair’s territory, and although the removal of the nest tree may temporarily force them out of the immediate vicinity, they are likely to simply select a new nest site to rebuild and continue to remain active in the same area.
Since the removal of Crowned Eagles is not an easy or permanent solution and may give small pet owners a false sense of security, looking at preventative measures is a far more logical option.
PROVIDING PROTECTION
Small pets in high risk areas should never be left outside alone and unattended. While most pet owners delight in walking around their yards with their beloved pets in tow, it is understandable that they cannot watch or monitor their pets all the time.
It is highly advisable that an outdoor enclosure be
It is important to remember that there is no malicious intent behind the eagle’s actions, and that hunting for food is simply a matter of survival for these young predators
built to safely house small pets when owners are away from home.
Verandas and courtyards can be enclosed without too much difficulty and expense and will provide adequate protection from opportunistic attack. Catios and kennels attached to the house that will allow for movement into and out of the house
by means of a window (cats) or door flap (dogs) are a more expensive option, but will provide the pet with freedom of movement in and out of the house into a safe enclosed outdoor area.
Eagle vests are another option for protecting small to medium dogs. These spiked vests are available from multiple suppliers online.
LARGER COMPANIONS
Dogs in the 10 kg + category make for protective companions to smaller dogs and their size will serve to reduce opportunistic attacks as the eagles are less likely to attempt an attack where their own lives are at risk.
