ebruary is often seen as the month of love, but at The Umhlanga Magazine, we believe that love should be celebrated every day—in all its beautiful forms. Whether it's the joy of planning a wedding, the warmth of family and friends, or the deep affection we have for the place we call home, love is genuinely at the heart of everything we do.

This edition is packed with stories of romance, love, and lifestyle inspiration. Our cover feature takes you inside the wonderful world of weddings, showcasing stunning venues and the real-life love stories of local couples who share their journey— from the first meeting to the venue, the planning, their favourite moment, and the anticipation of their big day. As always, it’s an insightful and heartwarming piece. We’ve also put together 10 Things We Love About Umhlanga, a look at love from the viewpoint of our little ones, and a feature on some of the schools we admire—because love isn’t just about grand gestures, right? It’s found in the small moments, the everyday indulgences, and the way we embrace the world around us.

Speaking of the world around us, there’s another love that deserves to be nurtured— the love for Umhlanga. This town is more than just a coastal escape; it’s a premium place to live, work, and play. From worldclass hotels and restaurants to thriving business hubs and vibrant community spaces, Umhlanga offers everything a modern, sophisticated lifestyle demands.

Whether you're an entrepreneur looking for a thriving base, a family seeking the perfect balance between city convenience and coastal serenity, or a traveller discovering the magic of our shores—this is where it all comes together.

More than ever, we should be proud ambassadors of Umhlanga, sharing its beauty, energy, and opportunity with the world. As locals, we have the privilege of living in a destination that others dream of visiting. So let’s tell that story—through the way we support local businesses, engage with our community, and welcome newcomers with warmth and enthusiasm. We’re not hiding from the challenges; we’re leaning into the highlights and opportunities.

Let’s express appreciation for where we live, who we share it with, and how we make it even better—shaping a narrative that invites others to see its true value. When we embrace the best of what’s around us, we create a mindset of opportunity, positivity, and growth—one that draws people in, inspires connection, and strengthens our community.

Happy reading, and here’s to loving life in Umhlanga!

Experiential Learning & High School Education

High schools in South Africa are under pressure to evolve with the times. In most schools, students focus on excelling in traditional subjects like mathematics, science, and languages, with the goal of pursuing conventional careers like law, medicine or engineering. However, this approach is becoming outdated. While students may excel in these subjects, few are exposed to new and emerging fields like Artificial Intelligence, entrepreneurship, coding, robotics, and environmental sustainability fields with surging global demand. The current education system emphasises knowledge acquisition over practical application. For example, students may master algebra but have no exposure to financial literacy or entrepreneurship. Even with a government mandate to introduce entrepreneurship into the curriculum, few schools have implemented experiential learning programmes on the subject. This approach leaves students unprepared for a world where adaptability and cross-disciplinary thinking are paramount.

To meet the demands of a rapidly changing world, parents and students need to start shifting their thinking. Parents should move beyond traditional career aspirations for their children and recognise the value of new and emerging fields. Furthermore, encouraging students to explore their interests and strengths, rather than following conventional pathways, can open doors to careers that didn't exist a decade ago. Parents play a key role in supporting experiential learning, promoting curiosity, and fostering adaptability.

Here are five recommendations parents can work with in the immediate term:

1. Encourage students to identify what they’re interested in and passionate about as early on as possible. This self-discovery process helps them make more informed subject and tertiary choices.

2. Support students in building critical skills like adaptability, problem-solving, and teamwork, skills that are valuable in any future career.

3. Discuss emerging industries like Artificial Intelligence, entrepreneurship, coding, robotics, and environmental sustainability to inspire curiosity and future-focused decision-making.

4. Encourage students to participate in internships, volunteer work, or school-based projects to build confidence, develop new skills, and strengthen their personal portfolios.

5. Ensure students are proficient in digital tools and platforms shaping the future of work. Exposure to and experience in using AI-driven learning platforms can significantly enhance employability.

Early career planning, including selecting Grade 10 subjects with purpose and exploring personal interests, provides a foundation for long-term employability. Self-awareness is no longer a "nice-to-have" but a vital determinant of career success. Leadership skills, experiential learning, and introspection significantly enhance a child’s self-awareness and confidence. Students must cultivate self-awareness, develop critical skills, and make intentional educational choices to prepare for an uncertain but opportunity-filled future. Early intervention and strategic preparation enable students to navigate an evolving labour market, transforming challenges into gateways for growth and advancement.

Encouraging students to explore their interests and strengths, rather than following conventional pathways, can open doors to careers that didn't exist a decade ago

Down The Aisle

Veils and vows, we get insight into the big day of some couples who got married at local hotels!

PHOTOS CONWAY

Garth & Melissa Napier

The Meeting

Our love story began at a CSI corporate event in Cape Town in 2019, while we were both working in different cities—Garth in Johannesburg and I in Durban. Meeting in Cape Town felt like fate. I was competing in a CSI competition which Garth had attended. After my team won an award, Garth reached out the next day with some photos. From that moment on, we couldn’t stop chatting!

The Venue

The Oyster Box was our special place. It’s where we had our very first date and consequentially the place we had our first kiss. When Garth and I first started dating we were in a long distance relationship so we always remembered the lighthouse as a way of guiding us back to each other ... cliché but it worked.

The Planning

Planning a wedding can be overwhelming, especially with all the little details and the potential for things to go wrong. You want to create a unique experience while still making it personal and fitting your vision for the day—and, of course, staying within your budget. Balancing these aspects can be challenging, but it’s all part of crafting a celebration that truly reflects you and your partner!

The Favourite Moment

The most memorable part was marrying my best friend and celebrating with our loved ones. Our first dance together was truly special and something I’ll always cherish.

The Anticipation

It’s a day that happens only once, something you may have been dreaming about since you were a little girl. Allow yourself to embrace all the emotions throughout the process and on the day itself. It’s your day, so focus on what makes you happy. Remember, it doesn’t have to fit someone else’s vision of perfection—create what is perfect for you.

The First Dance

We mixed four songs for our first dance: Spend My Life with You by Eric Benét, which perfectly captures the day; Lost Without You by Robin Thicke, the first song we ever danced to; Obsessed by Dan + Shay, one of our favorite artists; and A Good Night by John Legend, which was played after our first date. Each song holds a special meaning for us!

Ruwayne & Rianca Dukwah

The Meeting

My husband and I met on campus at UKZN Pietermaritzburg nearly a decade ago. It all started when he messaged me on Facebook with a joke about Thailand, as we had both recently visited the country. I replied, and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Venue

We selected the Radisson Blu as our wedding venue after my parents toured numerous options in the Midlands and Durban. It perfectly matched the elegant aesthetic I envisioned for our big day, with its stunning design and breathtaking views making it the ideal choice.

The Planning

Planning our wedding was no ordinary task. After getting engaged in December 2022 at Tintswalo Atlantic in Cape Town, we relocated to Melbourne, Australia, just a month later. Organising a wedding from across the globe came with its challenges. Thankfully, my amazing mom stepped in, managing much of the planning back in South Africa. Despite the hurdles, I found the experience unforgettable and rewarding. Working with some of the best service providers in the industry made the process smooth.

The Favourite Moment

Bride: For me, the most memorable part of the day was walking into the ceremony and seeing my soonto-be husband waiting for me. The look on his face is something I’ll treasure for the rest of my life—it was the perfect culmination of our journey.

Groom: Exchanging our vows. It was such a profound and emotional experience, as it marked the moment our union became official. Standing there, promising to love, cherish, and support my wife for the rest of my life, filled me with joy and a deep sense of commitment.

The Anticipation

One piece of advice I wish I had received was to accept that not everything will go as planned. Something will inevitably go wrong, but in hindsight, no one else will even notice—except for you! Embracing that mindset makes the day so much more enjoyable.

The First Dance

Our first dance was to I Don’t Love You Like I Used To by John Legend. From the moment we first heard it, we knew it would be our song. That dance was everything we hoped it would be—a beautiful reflection of our love and journey together.

Niko & Verushka Konstantopoulos

The Meeting

We met a few years ago while working on the same team at Absa. We spent a bit of time together collaborating on a cool data initiative and we got to know each other really well.

The Venue

We chose The North Star Micro Hotel as our venue because its intimate setting felt just right for the kind of celebration we wanted. Being right on the beach, the ocean made for the most beautiful backdrop for our ceremony and we wanted a relaxed and intimate celebration with just our closest friends and family.

The Planning

We started planning with a super-detailed spreadsheet to keep track of everything and, of course, I had a Pinterest board for all the inspiration. The first thing we did was create a list of noncompromises that mattered most to us, which really helped when it came to adjusting the budget and making decisions along the way. It was a mix of staying organised and keeping it fun!

The Favourite Moment

My favourite moment was the traditional Hindu ceremony. It had such a calm and relaxed atmosphere, and the priest took the time to explain the significance of each ritual. That made the experience so much more meaningful, not just for us but for our guests as well. It felt like everyone was truly connected to the traditions and the emotions of the day.

The Anticipation

I wish I knew how little perfection really matters on the big day. All the small details I stressed over didn’t even cross my mind once the day arrived. What truly stood out were the moments, the emotions, and the people—it’s those memories that stay with you.

The Music

We didn’t have a traditional reception. Instead, we had an evening of dining and conversation under the stars with a playlist of timeless classics from artists like Etta James, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra. An atmosphere that was elegant, soulful, and filled with nostalgia—just perfect for our relaxed dinner.

FUN FACT: We did a Greek Orthodox Wedding Ceremony as well, because we wanted to honour both our traditions. The ceremony included a reception where we had our first dance to Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley. That song has been special to us ever since we first heard it together early in our relationship—it has always felt like our song.

We understand how important it is for your big day to be perfect in every way, and we’re here to help you create the wedding you’ve always dreamed of. Choose from two stunning wedding venues and rely on our team of professional wedding coordinators to ensure your day is stress-free.

Your dream wedding is limited only by your imagination. At Brahman Hills, the possibilities are truly endless!

It’s a Beautiful Wedding at Baron Beach House

What

makes your venue unique?

Baron Beach House becomes “yours” for the wedding weekend. Everyone can relax and catch their breath before the big day especially since we do not have staff under foot or owners residing on the premises. The garden gate leads directly onto the beach and our stretch of beach is ideal for beach weddings with the ocean as your backdrop without strangers gawking at the proceedings or fishermen in the background.

The overall vibe and atmosphere of the venue

Our inspiration for Baron Beach House was Island Style Living by India Hicks. La Lucia is sub-tropical with luscious vegetation and our vibe is boho beach chic. We are relaxed without being rustic, we are upmarket without being pretentious. We marry “ballgowns and flip flops” and want the bridal couple and their entourage to have the best wedding experience of their lives.

How many guests can your venue accommodate?

For micro weddings up to 60 guests, the couple has the option to have their wedding ceremony under the frangipani tree in the front courtyard or in the event of rain, we host ceremonies next door at The Baron Hacienda, under the covered verandah, for up to 100 guests seated. The lawn at Baron Beach House can host an informal setting of up to 170 guests in a cocktail-style vibe with seat pods dotted on the grass. For our formal seatings, we host up to 120 guests in the traditional U-shape with a chequered dance floor in the middle. We own a 15m clear marquee that we keep on standby in the event of an unexpected cold front with rain forecast.

Ultimately, we love using festoon lights crisscrossing the lawn or putting up our 15m wooden wedding pergola that we decorate with fresh foliage and fairy lights.

Current trends that you love

We do a lot of Bohemian Beach Chic décor with Pampas grasses and dried blooms since we are on the beach and can recreate a scene from Greece in a heartbeat. But every wedding is unique and every bride has a blank canvas to tailor-make her wedding exactly as she has always envisioned her princess moment.

The best time to get married at Baron Beach House

We are blessed with wedding weather all year round. The fact that we own a clear marquee gives us the leverage to have a Plan B on standby for unpredictable weather. Ultimately, we love the night sky just at the golden hour when the fairy lights start to shine.

We strive to be a ‘one-stop destination’ for all our events and some wedding couples working overseas or from elsewhere only need to organise their wedding garments.

We have two beachfront properties next to each other and currently, we accommodate 24 guests sharing between Baron Beach House (16 adults) and Baron Hacienda (six guests). There are plans to extend at Baron Hacienda and convert the space into accommodation for wedding guests. We are passionate about our in-house décor service that we conceptualise with each bridal couple. Our properties are fully selfcatering, but guests are welcome to bring in their caterer, alternatively, we have trusted vendors for all catering. Our catering options range from floating canapés, to harvest tables, buffets, and plated dishes and an all-time favourite is a lamb on the spit with a great selection of side dishes to go with it. We also offer professional wedding photography, drone footage, videography, bar setup, card bar or corkage, in-house wedding floristry, wedding confectionary, professional hair and makeup, waitrons, barmen, DJ, lights and sound.

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION

Celebrating hard work, outstanding results & commitment to education.

St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls

From humble beginnings, founded in 1906 by the Nuns of the Order of St John’s the Divine, St Mary’s has grown into a leading educational institution today. With a commitment to excellence and distinction, the school inspires girls to become remarkable women. Being a Christian girl’s school and guided by the motto "Service Before Self and God Before All," St Mary’s provides a holistic education underpinned by faith, with consistently outstanding matric results.

This year, we are thrilled about so many exciting developments. Construction of the state-of-the-art “Sinenjabulo Zungu Sports Hub” is underway, set to replace the current sports office. Other upgrades include installing floodlights around the Astroturf, revamping the Indoor Sports Hall, and importing a new springboard for diving from the Netherlands.

In the Primary School, we embrace innovation with an integrated curriculum using Robotic Kits, Laser Cutting Technologies, 3D Printers, and AI to prepare students for a technology-driven world. Teachers continue to explore AI’s positive role in education as part of their professional development. Additionally, we are introducing the cultural intelligence programme, Thrive Together.

For Grade 8, we are launching a ProjectBased Learning programme to develop critical thinking, teamwork, and investigative skills. The Thrilling Thursday programme offers diverse modules such as coding, robotics, dance, and wellness, fostering curiosity and problem-solving. Grade 9 students benefit from iWoza Wednesday, an entrepreneurship programme featuring guest speakers who share real-world business insights. We’ve also introduced Engineering, Graphics, and Design as a subject, eagerly anticipated by students entering Grade 10. Our community partnership programmes

allow students to engage in service activities aligned with our core values and motto.

We are incredibly proud of our Matric Class of 2024, who achieved remarkable results. They earned 100% Bachelor’s Degree qualifications and 314 distinctions, averaging 3.45 distinctions per student. The class achieved a 77.2% overall average, with 49% of results being distinctions. Subject averages exceeded national averages by 9.4%, and 76.6% of all subjects scored above 70%. Additionally, 20 subject results ranked in the top 1% nationally.

Special congratulations to Georgina Thornhill, Elizabeth Anderson, and Emma Stewart for ranking in the top 5% in six subjects and achieving top 1% placements in several subjects. Amy D’Eramo excelled in Geography, placing in the top 1%, while Georgina and Elizabeth earned seven distinctions each, plus two additional distinctions in Mathematics Further Studies. Our sports programme also produces outstanding

sportswomen. Last year, we celebrated 85 KZN representatives, 12 National Representatives, and a hockey team ranked fourth nationally.

St Mary’s remains dedicated to nurturing girls into confident, capable women, empowering them to excel in academics, sports, culture and service.

FIVE BENEFITS OF METICULOUSLY PLANNED IMPLANT DENTISTRY

WITH ARCH DENTISTRY

Experience the future of dental care on the North Coast, where Arch Dentistry has emerged as a beacon of innovation and personalised care. At the heart of this revolution is the Implant and Rehabilitation Clinic, a state-of-the-art facility exclusively focused on advanced dental implant planning, placement, and restoration.

1. Restores Natural Appearance and Confidence

Dental implants are designed to look, feel, and function like natural teeth. With precise planning and execution, the placement is seamless, resulting in a smile that not only feels natural but also looks beautiful. Whether it’s a single tooth or a full arch, you can speak, smile, and laugh with confidence.

2. Improved Comfort and Functionality

Unlike traditional dentures or bridges, implants are securely anchored to the jawbone. This eliminates movement or discomfort and restores full chewing power. Proper planning ensures optimal placement, so you can enjoy your favourite foods without worry and speak clearly without hesitation.

3. Long-Term Durability and Reliability

When implants are carefully planned and executed, they are incredibly durable and can last a lifetime with proper

care. The use of advanced 3D imaging and guided surgery enhances precision, reducing the risk of complications and ensuring long-term success. This makes implants a lasting investment in your oral health.

4. Preservation of Aesthetic Proportions

Tooth loss, whether it’s a single tooth or several, often leads to a loss of tissue volume and noticeable changes in facial symmetry as adjacent teeth shift or the bite collapses. One of the most significant benefits of implant dentistry, beyond restoring a functional smile, is its ability to preserve and rebuild bone structure and soft tissue volume. Through meticulous planning, implants are placed not only to integrate seamlessly with the bone but also to provide vital support to the surrounding structures, ensuring a natural and harmonious appearance.

5. Enhanced Overall Quality of Life

Implants eliminate the inconveniences of traditional solutions like removable dentures, giving you a solid foundation for a beautiful, functional smile. By addressing gaps in your smile with precision and expertise, properly planned and placed implants help you regain selfassurance, improve oral health, and enjoy daily life with confidence.

UNPARALLELED UNPARALLELED

Thonga Beach

One word: SPECTACULAR! This unique destination is more than worth the drive to get there. The journey to Thonga isn’t easy as the last 1.5 hours drive is on a sandy, bumpy road at a slow speed. The hotel is the only lodging for miles and miles in a protected area. The location is truly unique, with only 12 thatched rooms for guests, so the privacy is unparalleled. (At arrival, we changed our booking from a two night to a three night stay).

The rooms are gorgeous with modern, lovely bathrooms, and housekeeping is done twice daily. There are two medium-sized pools with loungers and chairs, and a wooden sun deck just above the beach, which has wonderful views. You cannot view the sea from the dining areas or the pools, but we could glimpse it from our room. This is because the forest isn’t cut back and you can hardly see any of the lodge from the beach. It’s a remarkable place.

The food is simply superb, so fresh, tasty, a fabulous variety of options and is included in the cost. The beach, which runs all the way to Mozambique, is stunning. We loved walking along the seemingly endless

beach each day and rarely bumped into another guest. There are daily activities offered, like snorkelling and SCUBA diving, turtle tracking, kayaking, birding, whale watching, dolphins, forest walks, swimming, and watching iconic sunsets with a sundowner. They even have a beach centre with all kinds of beach stuff you can borrow during your stay.

Unfortunately, we were on a tight schedule of relaxation during our stay, so we didn’t have a lot of time to enjoy all of these activities. We booked the ‘turtle experience’ and were lucky enough to sit with three Loggerhead turtles while they lay eggs, saw one coming out of the water and another going in, so all in all a “busy” night.

This experience again is a profound one, seeing a water animal drag its now heavy body through sand and then dig a deep hole for about 30 minutes before laying 80-100 eggs, pure exhaustion and then drag itself back into the water, ABSOLUTELY worth the money and getting back after 11p.m. ... sadly, we did not get a glimpse of the huge and wondrous Leatherback turtle! (Maybe next time).

FUN BIT:

In ancient Hawaiian mythology, turtles were venerated as a powerful symbol of strength, fertility, longevity, and wisdom.

Finally, the very best part of the lodge is the extremely professional, helpful, knowledgeable, and delightful staff, most of which come from the local community, they bend over backwards to accommodate requests and make each experience the best it can be. The staff arranged a candle-lit dinner on the deck for us one evening, it was incredible.

There is no evening entertainment, no TV, and limited connection, creating the perfect escape. Oh, I forgot the spa! One of the best massages I’ve had in years, and they offer a variety of services, with no reservations necessary in advance of your stay.

Finally, the conservation and community work done by this lodge and its associated Isibindi Foundation is impressive and is making a profound impact on the local community and the broader ecosystem. We loved our stay here and hope to visit again someday.

A Self-Love

Checklist

In the month of love, it’s time to turn that affection inward!

1. Be Kind to Yourself

Speak to the qualities you like about yourself. You can even write a “love letter” where you commend yourself for your achievements and forgive for the failures and mistakes you may have made. It’s about being positive and liking who you are.

2. Digital Detox

It’s so easy to grab our phones and just doomscroll through the various social media platforms. Taking a break from them not only gives our eyes a break, but also facilitates a digital detox (which helps lower stress levels) and creates more time for new experiences!

3. Relax & Rejuvanate

A good soak in a bath tub or an “everything

shower” can leave us feeling like a new person. Whether you’re doing a homemade face mask or taking a much-needed nap, that’s showing your body love. Take that extra time to use that new toner or brush your hair another 100 times, you will thank yourself for it later.

4. Declutter

A fresh space fuels inspiration. Decluttering and reorganising can be therapeutic as you refresh your surroundings, get rid of anything that no longer fits into your space or life. You’re showing yourself love by creating a place where you can thrive, be at peace, and enjoy living.

5. Hobbies

When was the last time you did something

that you love? Hobbies can bring us so much joy, but we hardly let ourselves indulge in them. Grab a book, an instrument, a game controller, a yoga mat, trainers, a camera, paint brush or pencil, or a whisk. Buy that music festival or plane ticket, don’t keep waiting for the “right time”, allow yourself to do what you love.

6. Watching Movies

Now, when it comes to movies (or series), you can snuggle up at home and have a marathon or make it an outing and visit your nearby cinema. Whether it’s a movie you’ve had on your watchlist for a while and never got around to watching or a new release you’ve been excited about, it’s about putting aside those few hours and allowing yourself to indulge in the “suspension of disbelief”. You can even

write a short review afterwards to lock in your feelings about what you’ve just watched, maybe there’s a new hobby for you in this! Invite a friend with you so you can share the experience, too.

7. Get Outside

Sunshine is known to lift spirits, so spending a few hours outdoors and soaking up that Vitamin D which boosts your vitality is definitely giving yourself some love. If you’re thinking of lying in the sun for a while to get that summer tan, remember to lather on the SPF as well! Taking a walk, or hike, on the nearby promenade or forest trails and getting some fresh air is also a great way to relax and get those steps in!

8. Spoil Yourself

Speaking of doing things to make you feel great—getting your hair and nails done, or a massage is often a well-earned treat or a much-needed change. Choose a style or colour you’ve always wanted to try—feel that refreshed feeling with a transformed look. Love yourself by letting your appearance match the image you have for who you want to be.

9. Grab Good Grub

Great food can instantly change the way you feel, about yourself or your current situation in general. Every once in a while, indulging in your favourite food and not shaming yourself for it, for enjoying something can express love. Whether you make it yourself or visit the restaurant which makes it best, allow yourself to savour something that means a lot to you.

Retail Therapy

Are those pairs of shoes you’ve been keeping tabs on finally on sale? Or that book that’s been on your list for a while? Retail therapy, within reason, can be an act of selflove when done mindfully, giving yourself permission to indulge in things that bring you joy and reflect your worth.

The Right People

Surrounding yourself with people who love and encourage you, is also loving yourself. Choosing who you spend your time with gives you agency as you don’t allow just anyone within your safe space. It honours your well-being and happiness.

Get Creative

Give something new a try! DIY projects provide a rewarding sense of accomplishment, proving that you have the skills to create while sparking your creativity and fostering growth. By dedicating time to yourself and embracing new challenges, you’re affirming that your passions, interests, and personal development are truly valuable.

While you’re embarking on these new adventures and accomplishments, remember to document everything to look back on them one day. Photos capture the most precious memories for keeping and to share the things which make you happy and feel loved. Most importantly, don’t forget that these aren’t an exhaustive or isolated list of things you can do for yourself. Every day, week or month is a chance for you to do something for yourself!

MY STORY

Jonathan Liebmann shares some insight into his background, his relationship with Umhlanga, and the inspiration behind BlackBrick Umhlanga.

I’ve always been passionate about creating solutions that work seamlessly for people.

Give us a brief introduction. Who is Jonathan Liebmann?

I’m one of the co-founders of BlackBrick, a pioneering aparthotel brand that redefines urban living by offering flexibility for our members and attractive returns for investors. I grew up in Durban, and my connection to Umhlanga runs deep—my mom had her Fashion Design Studio for seven years in the very building we’re developing. I spent many afternoons there after school, so bringing BlackBrick to this location is both nostalgic and meaningful to me.

In a little more detail, tell us about how you ended up in development. My background is rooted as a developer and entrepreneur, which gave me a solid foundation for navigating complex projects and anticipating challenges. I’ve always been passionate about creating solutions that work seamlessly for people. Development became a natural progression because it combines innovation, operational excellence, and community impact—values of which I’m all deeply committed to.

Tell us more about what BlackBrick is.

BlackBrick started with a clear aim: to offer a new way of urban living that’s flexible, ecological, and tailored to the evolving needs of modern members. The aparthotel concept blends residential comfort with hotel-grade service and amenities, offering a turnkey, hands-free solution for investors and a connected, adaptable experience for members.

We currently have a growing network in major cities like Johannesburg, Cape

Town, and now Durban, with plans to expand further. BlackBrick is built around the ethos of versatility, community, and sustainability, ensuring every development adds value to both its members and the local environment.

Tell us about bringing the BlackBrick brand to Umhlanga

Bringing BlackBrick to Umhlanga feels particularly special because of my personal ties to the area. Beyond the nostalgia, Umhlanga is a vibrant, tropical environment that has shaped the design of this project. We’ve embraced the location’s lush, natural beauty by incorporating greenery into the building’s façade to create a bush lodge, jungle-inspired feel. It’s been an exciting

opportunity to contribute to an area that already has so much energy, culture, and potential.

What’s special about the location chosen to build BlackBrick Umhlanga?

This location holds a special place in my heart because of its history—it’s where I spent so much of my childhood visiting my mom’s studio.

BlackBrick Umhlanga is also unique compared to our other developments because it’s the first site where we haven’t repurposed the existing building and are demolishing it to build this aparthotel from scratch. The vision for this project is to create something truly special

for the area—an aparthotel that meets the needs of modern living while staying connected to Umhlanga’s natural charm.

Are there any other projects you are working on or are excited about?

Our latest BlackBrick Aparthotel in Cape Town that is situated in Roodehek Street, Gardens is almost complete and we are so excited about what that has to offer locals and tourists alike being in such a central and magnificent setting. We’re always looking ahead to expand the BlackBrick network and continue innovating the aparthotel experience.

I’m particularly passionate about how we can use this model to connect cities and offer people the freedom to stay and work across multiple locations. For example, our future offerings will include packages that allow members to split their time between cities like Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, giving them the best of all worlds and the ability to work and play between cities.

LUPA OSTERIA

An immersive dining experience in Umhlanga Village WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDER

Located on the ever-popular and festive Chartwell Drive, the restaurant’s warm atmosphere provides the perfect setting for an intimate family evening or a fun lunch with friends. Named after Lupa, the wolf who suckled the mythological founders of Rome, this restaurant serves freshly made and authentic Italian food.

As we took our seats, the pleasant Phiwo greeted us and introduced us to their speciality gin cart while we snacked on complimentary breadsticks. Featuring a variety of brands and flavours of gin, mixers and garnishes, Phiwo explained and suggested the mixology we could try. The Inverroche Amber Gin was a favourite, mixed with lemonade or sugar free tonic water and topped off with slices of fresh grapefruit. From their mocktail selection, the Italian Sunset and Rainfall stood out for us. These vibrant and refreshing drinks were mixes of zesty and citrus flavours complementing the starters. Feeling adventurous, we opted for the Italian nachos and oven-baked snails. The snails, a new experience, were baked in a wood-fire oven in a creamy white wine and Gorgonzola sauce and served with toasted

ciabatta. The bold flavours of the snails were balanced with the mild notes from the ciabatta. Crispy, three-cheese ravioli were the Italian nachos, paired with a chilli-infused arrabbiata sauce, a nice addition to the cheesy bites.

On to the main dishes, honouring the Italian influence, we ordered a pizza and a pasta, accompanied by two of their grilled dishes. The Amy, a meat-free pizza, was a favourite around the table. Topped with roasted butternut, feta, caramelised pumpkin seeds and onions, and rocket leaves. The crumbled feta’s saltiness balanced out the sweet influences from the caramelised components. The Napoli sauce, infused with white wine, chilli, garlic, and cream, beautifully complements the chorizo and prawns, served served with light, chewy gnocchi. For a truly special experience, you can opt for their Lupa Signature Pasta, where they complete and serve the dish directly at your table from a flaming parmesan wheel! Moving away from Italian dishes, the wood-roasted chicken, with a lemon and herb basting, was tender and flavourful. Served with roasted vegetables, it completes the selection, so you can have a choice to satisfy any kind of cuisine you’re in the mood for. Made with quality ingredients, and at a reasonable price, LUPA Osteria provides a

welcoming dining experience that feels like home.

No dining experience is complete without dessert. It was quite a challenge choosing from the impressive selection, but we finally settled on Nutella stuffed crêpes, Tiramisu, and baked cheesecake. Admittedly biased, the Tiramisu was amazing, the layers of ladyfinger biscuits and mascarpone mousse were infused with espresso, balancing the sweetness with a hint of bitterness. The baked cheesecake complemented by creamy vanilla gelato was smooth and practically melted in your mouth.

We left stuffed, happy with a new appreciation for Italian cuisine. Thank you for the amazing experience!

Yoga: Mental Clarity & Physical Balance

In a world that refuses to slow down, stress, fatigue, and distraction are constant challenges. Yoga, an ancient practise rooted in timeless wisdom, offers a profound antidote. It restores calm, builds strength, and realigns the mind and body. Backed by science and tradition, yoga nurtures every part of you to thrive in harmony.

Calm the Mind, Transform Your Health

True health begins in the mind. Stress inflames the body, drains energy, and weakens immunity. Yoga offers a proven solution: through mindful breathing, movement, and meditation, it clears mental fog, improves sleep, and lowers stress. Beyond that, it trains you to meet life’s challenges with resilience and clarity.

I’ve experienced firsthand how yoga silences mental noise—the Yogis call this Yoga Citta Vritti Nirodha. This quieting reveals the natural peace, beauty, and power within. When the mind is calm, a vibrant, balanced body emerges, allowing us to live with energy and joy.

Strength and Freedom in Harmony

Physically, yoga strengthens and restores. It complements any lifestyle—whether you’re running, weightlifting,

golfing, or navigating daily life—by unlocking tight areas, enhancing flexibility, and reducing inflammation. Yet yoga is far more than physical. It stretches the mind as much as the body. Strength and flexibility meet calm and focus, creating freedom both in our body as well as in our mind space.

Having taught countless classes, hosted events, and worked with corporate teams in the Netherlands and my hometown, Durban, I’ve seen how yoga transforms lives from the inside out, benefitting people of all ages and backgrounds. It’s not about perfect poses or placing your leg behind your head—it’s about progress, presence, and self-awareness. Stress dissolves into serenity, vitality takes root, and students discover their innate strength and balance. Yoga’s continued popularity across centuries

reflects its unmatched power to renew and empower.

Wellness Retreats and Events in 2025

Looking ahead, 2025 marks an exciting chapter. I’m planning wellness and yoga retreats in serene settings, offering participants a chance to reconnect with themselves. These events will blend movement, breathwork, meditation, and community, creating space for deep personal transformation.

Whether you’re new to yoga or seeking to deepen your practise, these retreats are for anyone ready to embrace a healthier, more vibrant life. Yoga isn’t just exercise; it’s a sacred tradition that has transformed my life and countless others. It’s a gateway to living more fully, vibrantly, and present. Step onto your mat and discover the peace and power already within you.
